Before they went out to dinner, Leland pulled into an empty parking lot.
"Do you want to drive honey," Leland asked.
"Seriously? I'm only 12," Jennifer pointed out.
"That's true but the parking lot is empty," Leland reminded her, "And there's literally nothing there. It's fine."
"Okay," Jennifer said, "But what if I have a panic attack."
Leland smiled to himself. He knew that Jennifer wouldn't get better until she faced some challenges and saw she could do it.
"You'll be alright," he promised her, "The second you feel uncomfortable I'll take over."
"Okay," Jennifer agreed, "Just don't tell mom. She would freak the freak out."
Leland winced remembering the one-time Karen did freak out on him.
"Your mom did freak out on me once," Leland said, "I can't say I didn't have it coming though."
Jennifer drove around the parking lot twelve times.
"How did I do," she asked Leland.
"You did wonderfully," Leland told her.
"Thanks dad!"
They drove to the cafe. It was a quiet restaurant so they would be able to talk. The waitress came over and took their orders.
"It feels so good to be back," Jennifer said.
"I know," Leland told her, "It feels amazing to have you back. Our life was just grief without you."
"I'm sorry about that," Jennifer said, "I never meant for any of this to happen."
"You did nothing wrong," Leland told her firmly.
"You don't know how much I missed you guys," Jennifer said tears welling up in her eyes.
"I know how much we missed you," Leland told her wiping the tears away with his thumb.
Jennifer finally calmed down.
"You would think I'd be over it," she said, "I mean it's over."
"The hurt doesn't end as quickly as that," Leland replied, "It takes time."
"It's not fair," Jennifer said angrily, "I didn't do anything wrong, and my family suffered."
Leland nodded. He absolutely understood how Jennifer was feeling.
"I love you dad," Jennifer said.
"I love you honey," Leland replied, "I wish that I could have suffered in your place-"
"No, you don't," Jennifer exclaimed, "It was horrible what I went through. I have no idea who took me, but he is evil."
It was my fault that she suffered this, Leland thought to himself.
If he hadn't arrested Payton Zackary, his father wouldn't have had a reason to kidnap Jennifer.
"The person who did it will pay for what he did," Leland told his daughter.
"I don't know who did it," Jennifer pointed out.
Jennifer and her father spent a few hours at the cafe until it closed. When they got back Leland thanked Monk and Trudy for watching the boys.
"It was our pleasure," Trudy smiled.
Adrian drove back to the house he and Trudy resided at. Instead of going inside Adrian and Trudy sat on the front porch swing. The breeze was blowing nicely, and it was one of their favorite things to do when they first got married.
"It's such a beautiful night," Trudy said smiling as Adrian put an arm around her.
"The stars in the sky can't hold a candle to the light in your eyes," he told her.
"Adrian… what a beautiful thing to say," Trudy said blushing.
"I can't believe I have you back," Adrian whispered, "and it makes me so grateful. There are so many people who aren't half as lucky as we are."
"Luck has nothing to do with it," Trudy said, "It was GOD who decided to reunite us."
"After GOD took you from me, I hated Him. He never stopped loving me though."
Trudy nodded.
"GOD loves everyone," she said.
"He loves me more than I thought possible. He gave you back to me. I love God second only to you."
Trudy smiled and blushed.
"Maybe you should love Him more than you love me. After all it was Him that gave me back to you."
"It's impossible to love anyone more than I love you," Adrian said softly.
"Do you remember the time we were in Singapore," Trudy asked him.
"Of course," Adrian said nodding, "Did you remember that?"
"I was arrested for kicking a pebble," Trudy said remembering, "And I was sentenced to 12 strokes of the bamboo cane on the back of my legs, my back and my hindquarters. I tried not to show it, but I was terrified. The judge said it was the lightest sentence available."
"I was terrified as well," Adrian said, "I understood that in that insane country the sentence had to be carried out, but I begged the judge to carry out the sentence on me."
"I remember that" Trudy whispered, "I cried more than you did."
"It hurt," Adrian admitted, "But it was worth it."
"I remember I tried to apologize for what you went through, but you wouldn't let me. You said it wasn't my fault that Singapore had such ridiculous laws."
Trudy paused.
"Adrian?"
"Yes honey?"
"If the pebble had gotten in someone's eye, would you still have protected me?"
"Without hesitation," he said seriously.
"I love you," Trudy whispered.
"Not as much as I love you," Adrian answered.
Trudy kissed him.
"I should have known it was you before," he said, "When I first met 'Natalie'."
"I didn't even know I was me," Trudy pointed out, "I had been "Natalie" for five years… well maybe a little less since I spent so long in a coma. I didn't look anything like I used to. You'd have been horrified if you saw me after the incident."
"How bad could it be," he asked.
She handed him her phone. In her phone there were several photos of herself after the bombing. Her entire face had been burnt off.
"Yeah, that's pretty bad," he agreed.
"They reconstructed my face in ten surgeries," Trudy added, "The surgeon who operated on me was a man named Mitch Decker. He was the one that named me Natalie. In the three years that I was in the hospital we became friends."
"Just friends?"
"Mitch wanted to be more than friends," Natalie said, "But I knew there was someone in my life who loved me and who I loved. I just didn't know who it was."
