"Of course," Dwight said.
"You don't even have to ask," Marsha added, "Our home is your home,"
Leland yawned. It had been a long night. Jennifer had a panic attack that lasted past 3 AM. Caroline had a fever, and she was crying through the night. He was exhausted but so happy. Caroline was perfect.
He groaned when he heard puking. It was Jennifer. He gently knocked on the bathroom door.
"Honey? Are you okay?"
Jennifer opened the door.
"Sorry dad," she said, "I didn't mean to wake you."
"Don't be silly," Leland told her gently.
He studied her for a moment. Her cheeks were flushed bright red. She looked pale and she was shaky.
"You're sick," he said.
Jennifer nodded.
"My stomach hurts," she admitted, "and I feel a little shaky."
"Come on," Leland said, "We need to get you to Doctor Drier."
He gently woke Karen.
"Jennifer is sick," he told her, "I'm taking her to Doctor Drier. Are you okay with Jared, Max and Caroline?"
"What's wrong with Jennifer," Karen asked.
"Her stomach hurts, she was throwing up, she's pale and shaky."
"Call me as soon as you know anything," Karen said sitting up.
She quickly got dressed. She went into Caroline's room. She checked Caroline's temperature. It was 97.2.
"My sweet girl," she said, kissing her forehead, "I love you."
Leland called Doctor Drier on the way to the office.
"Bring her in," he said.
"I'm on the way," Leland replied.
He paused.
"Can I stay in the room with her," he asked.
"Of course," Doctor Drier replied.
Jennifer threw up four more times on the short ride to Doctor Drier's office and once on Leland's shoes.
"I'm so sorry daddy," Jennifer said weakly.
"You didn't do anything wrong," Leland told his daughter, "You're sick… that's all."
It took a few minutes for Jennifer to get in to see Doctor Drier but for Leland it felt like hours. After examining her Doctor Drier frowned.
"She's dehydrated," he explained, "We need to get her to the hospital. She needs IV fluids."
"Is that going to hurt," Jennifer asked weakly.
"No sweetie," Leland promised, "They'll use the PICC Line."
"Exactly," Doctor Drier said, "We just need to fill you up and find out what's wrong. It could be as simple as stress."
On the way to the hospital Leland called Karen and told her what was going on.
"Oh, my poor baby," Karen said shakily.
She got the baby dressed and gathered up the boys.
"Mom, where are we going," Jared asked.
"We have to go to SFGH honey," Karen explained, "Jennifer's sick."
"Is she going to die," Max sobbed.
Jared put an arm around his little brother.
"She'll be okay," he said as Karen put the baby in the car seat and buckled her in.
Once they reached the hospital Max and Jared headed for the playroom. Karen took Caroline into Jennifer's room.
"Mom," Jennifer said, "You're here."
"Of course, I am sweetheart," she said, "How are you feeling?"
"I'm scared," Jennifer admitted, "I don't know what's wrong with me."
"You're going to be just fine," Karen promised.
She rubbed Jennifer's back soothingly.
The doctor came in.
"Okay," she said, "My name is Doctor Simz and I have the results of the test. Jennifer has a bladder infection."
"How bad is it," Karen asked.
"After we hydrate her, we're going to give her some antibiotics directly into the bladder."
Jennifer grimaced. That sounded painful."
"It won't hurt," Doctor Simz reassured her, "We'll give you something to numb it in your PICC line."
"Where are the boys," Leland asked.
"Jared took Max up to the playroom," Karen said.
Before he could respond he got a text from Grace
Where are you?
I'm at the hospital. Jennifer got sick. Karen took the kids to the hospital.
SFGH?
Yes. Where are you?
I took a flight from NY to SF. I wanted to surprise you and to meet my new niece. I got to your house and
nobody was there.
Can you come to SFGH? The boys are up in the playroom and Jennifer, Karen, Caroline and I are in room 103 B
Sure
The first thing that Trudy noticed when she got up was it was a beautiful day. The sun was shining, and she could see birds and squirrels running around the yard.
"Adrian, I have an idea," Trudy said, "Let's go to the zoo."
"I love that idea," Adrian smiled.
On their second date they went to the zoo.
"Should we pack a picnic lunch," he asked her, "Or should we eat at the restaurant across the street from the zoo?"
"Let's eat at the restaurant like we did on our second date."
Adrian's eyes lit up with excitement.
"You remember that" he exclaimed.
"I'm starting to remember more and more," Trudy said smiling.
Adrian felt that sense of euphoria that was becoming more and more familiar to him. Fifteen days ago, he learned that his darling wife was still alive. Trudy couldn't remember much but slowly the pieces were coming together.
Unsurprisingly this was weird for her. She had lived 10 years as Natalie, a person that didn't exist until Trudy "died" in the car bomb.
The most amazing thing about this was how quickly they fell into being Trudy and Adrian again. Adrian should have known that Natalie was Trudy. She had so much compassion just like Trudy did. She was creative like Trudy was. Even though it was established that Trudy was lost to him, he never lost the feeling of her.
He could remember when the actress hired to portray Trudy was believed to be the real Trudy. Ironically Trudy (not knowing she was Trudy) was the one that told him the news. He could remember talking with his friend and he specifically remembered Trudy (than Natalie) and Leland asking him what his feeling was.
"I can't," Adrian said numbly, "I can't lose her– not again."
"Adrian," Trudy asked, bringing him back into the present, "What's on your mind?"
"I'm just amazed about how easily we fell into being Trudy and Adrian again after ten years. It's indescribable how amazing this is."
Trudy put her hand on his shoulder.
"To me it feels like I'm alive again. It feels like GOD has given me the best gift ever. He gave me, myself back and he gave me back you. I also think it's partly because I knew you for five years before I knew who I was. If it was…"
Her voice trailed off.
"I know what you mean," he said, "I love you."
He rubbed her hand.
"I love you too," she said, "I love you more than you can possibly know."
He hugged her tightly.
Grace came into the hospital room. Jennifer's eyes lit up when she saw her aunt.
"Aunt Grace," she exclaimed.
"Hi baby," Grace gathered Jennifer in her arms, "I hear you're sick?"
"Yes," Grace said, "Doctor Simz said I have a bladder infection and I'm dehydrated. I'll be okay though."
Caroline started crying.
"She's beautiful," Grace told Leland and Karen hugging them both, "Can I hold her?"
"Sure," Leland said, placing Caroline in Grace's arms."
At that moment Max and Jared came in.
"AUNT GRACE!"
"It's so good to see you," Jared said.
Leland got an anonymous text.
You should teach your older son to respect his elders.
Who is this?
Who I am doesn't matter. That kid kicked me
I'm sure he had a reason. Why do you keep bothering my family?
So, you can get a taste of what I suffer every day! You have no idea what it's like to lose someone you love. You have no idea what it's like to have a person you love hurting.
LEAVE MY FAMILY ALONE. I CAN EASILY ARREST YOU FOR HARASSMENT WITH ALL THESE TEXTS
Prove I did it lol. The texts are anonymous.
You admitted to what you did!
No– some anonymous text admitted what I did.
What's your plan? You're not going to hurt my family!
Lol. I already have. You're in my nightmare. In fact, I think it's worse what you're living through. Jennifer will never be at peace. You see, I don't have to hurt you or your family physically. Emotionally will do just fine.
I don't like you!
I don't like you either. In fact, I hate you. You took my son from me.
YOU TOOK MY DAUGHTER FROM ME!
But I returned her. My son is dead.
You do realize you're confessing to what you did?
You do realize you have nothing but an anonymous so-called confession. Even if you do catch me, I have every judge in my pocket.
Then why is your son dead?
F*** you, you son of a b*****
Please stop this. I don't want to talk to you.
Like I said you're not in any physical danger. It wouldn't be as fun for the "cat" to chase a dead "rat".
Leland groaned.
"Honey," Karen asked, "Are you alright?"
Leland smiled.
"I'm fine sweetheart," he said.
"Okay," Karen said, "Because you know if something is amiss you can always talk to me."
"I'll explain later," Leland said.
Leland's phone dinged. He sighed as he looked down.
Is anyone in danger?
I've been getting anonymous text messages from the guy who took Jennifer honey.
WHAT! Is he threatening her? Caroline? Max? Jared? Us?
No. The opposite in fact– he's enjoying the fact that he's too smart to get caught.
Leland saw that Karen was shaking. She only shook like that twice that he had seen. One time when she was furious. The other time she was shaking with trepidation. This time she seemed terrified.
Isn't there any way to stop him? What if you got a new phone?
Leland thought about that, but he had decided against it. If the situation was such that Paul Zackary couldn't get hold of him who knows what might happen.
That night Karen and Leland sat outside on the porch swing. Leland had an arm around Karen.
"Did I ever tell you what Monk told me when you messed up?" Leland asked.
"What," Karen asked curiously.
"He said, "Don't use a broom to mop the floor."
Karen gazed at him for a second then burst out laughing.
"I can see him saying that," she said, "Isn't that obvious though?"
Leland nodded.
"It was an analogy. He was worried that I would get mad at you the same way you got mad at me. I called him Detective Obvious."
Karen laughed again.
"What made him say that," she asked.
"Well after the time you… got mad at me for not bringing the kids back until 4 AM without calling you or you being able to reach me there was a time during the summer…"
Karen nodded. She remembered that and the way Leland treated her with nothing but kindness compassion love respect and understanding even after she had messed up.
Leland's phone beeped. He looked down and sighed in relief to see it was from his sister saying goodnight and not from Paul "anonymous" Zachary.
