Outside the house Trudy laughed.
"Adrian, aren't we dressed a little fancy to be going to my parents," she asked.
Now it was Adrian's turn to laugh.
"I told you, "He said, "We have a surprise for you."
Trudy knocked on the door. Her dad answered it.
"Trudy," Dwight smiled, "You look beautiful."
"You look great too," Trudy said, "Why are you wearing a tuxedo?"
"Come on in," Dwight replied, "You'll see in a moment."
Trudy entered the family room. About fifty people yelled "surprise".
"Oh, my goodness," Trudy exclaimed, "What's going on here?"
"We're having a party for you," Marsha explained, hugging Trudy.
"This is incredible," Trudy said hugging everyone from the party, "Thank you all."
"Let's open the presents first," Dwight suggested.
"You guys got presents for me," Trudy exclaimed.
"Of course we did," Marsha replied, "Come on outside. It's in the backyard."
Trudy followed everyone outside. Adrian was quick to hand her his gift first. It was a beautiful diamond necklace with a matching pin.
"Adrian," Trudy said, "This is so beautiful. I love it!"
"Open my gift next," Beth said.
Trudy grabbed the envelope that was labeled from Beth. She opened it up and her eyes went wide. Beth had gotten her and Adrian a week at the Sheridan Hotel.
"It starts on Saturday and ends the following Sunday," Beth explained.
Trudy hugged her aunt and thanked her about a million times.
Karen and Leland and the children had gotten Trudy a camera.
"I remembered how you liked to take pictures," Karen said, "It was a hobby of yours."
After they opened all the gifts it was time for entertainment.
"We set up karaoke," Marsha said.
"I love karaoke," Trudy exclaimed.
They all rushed inside.
"Trudy," Dwight said, "Why don't you go first?"
"Sure. Adrian, want to do one together?"
"How about Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain," Adrian suggested.
Trudy nodded. It was one of her favorite songs. Marsha put on the music. They waited a few seconds then Adrian began.
In the twilight glow I see her
Blue eyes laughing in the rain
Trudy laughed. Then it was her turn.
When we kissed goodbye and parted
I knew we'd kiss hello again
Trudy and Adrian sang together now.
Love is like a living ember
More than memories remain
Through the ages we'll remember
Blue eyes laughing in the rain.
One day we did meet up yonder
We stroll hand and hand again
With GOD our love knows no parting
Blue eyes laughing in the rain
Everyone cheered.
"Can I go next," Marsha asked.
"Sure," Trudy said, "What song do you want to do?"
"Mother and Child reunion," Marsha said.
"That's perfect," Dwight replied as he put on the music.
No, I would not give you false hope
On this strange and blessed day
But the mother and child reunion
Was only a moment away.
After she was done everyone cheered again.
Dwight decided to sing "GOD BLESS THE BROKEN ROAD". Jared sang a song from Les Miserable. Once everyone got their turn to go Taylor asked if they could go on the trampoline.
"Sure honey," Mitch said.
Of course, the children bounced first. They stayed on the trampoline for ½ an hour. Then it was Trudy and Adrian's turn. Unfortunately, as Trudy was getting on the trampoline she slipped, and her leg went in the wrong direction.
"Oh my GOD," she whispered.
Everyone ran to her. It was obvious her leg was broken.
"I'm sorry," she said.
"Don't be ridiculous," her mother gently reproached, "It's not your fault you fell."
"But I ruined the party," Trudy said, trying unsuccessfully to hold back tears.
"You did no such thing," Marsha replied, "This party was great. We'll simply celebrate again another day when your leg is better."
Adrian tried to help her get up to no avail. He carried her to their car and drove to the hospital. Marsha and Dwight said goodbye to everyone and got in their own car to meet them.
"Honey she'll be fine," Dwight told Marsha, "She survived Leukemia. She survived a car bombing. She can survive a broken leg."
"How is she going to get around," Marsha asked.
"We'll be there for her," Dwight reassured Marsha.
They arrived at SFGH. The doctor was putting Trudy in a wheelchair to take her into x-rays.
"Could you be pregnant," the doctor asked Trudy.
"My reproductive organs have been destroyed," Trudy explained, "I physically can't become pregnant."
The doctor took the x-rays. He looked at the pictures and came out to speak with Adrian, Trudy, Marsha and Dwight.
"It's a pretty bad break," he said, "Thankfully she doesn't require amputation. She'll be in a cast for awhile."
"How long," Trudy asked.
"You'll be in a cast for 12 weeks," the doctor replied, "Do you have anyone who can stay with you while your husband is at work?"
"I can take time off if I need to," Adrian assured them.
"We'll be there too," Dwight and Marsha added in unison.
"Great. I'm going to prescribe her some pain pills. I want her to take one as per needed. She has to take it with food."
"Can she take one now," Marsha asked.
The doctor nodded and went to get the pain pills.
The doctor gave Trudy a bag of pretzels, a cup of water and one pain pill. She took it gratefully. She was released a few hours later. Beth had a limo pick them up at the hospital. Marsha would drive Adrian and Trudy's car and Dwight would drive his and Marsha's.
"Thank you for doing this Aunt Beth," Trudy said.
"It's my pleasure," Beth said, "I'm sorry you broke your leg."
"I don't think I'll ever jump on a trampoline again," Trudy laughed without humor.
"Yes you will," Adrian replied firmly, "We don't live our lives in fear."
"What if I break my leg again," Trudy pointed out.
"You won't," Beth replied as though she was 100% sure of that fact.
"How do you know," Trudy asked.
"You survived a car bombing and Leukemia," Beth replied, "GOD wouldn't let you break your leg twice."
Trudy chuckled and nodded slowly.
