The next day when Trudy came home from volunteering Adrian could tell something was bothering her. She was quiet all through dinner.
"Are you okay," Adrian asked her gently.
"It was a really rough day today," she said, "One of the kids died in my arms. They couldn't revive her."
Adrian hugged her.
"Oh sweetheart," he said, "I can't imagine how that must be."
She felt tears prick at her eyes.
"It was awful," she admitted.
He wiped away her tears with his thumb.
"It's alright," he told her gently, "The baby is in heaven now. How old was she?"
"Ten days old," Trudy sniffled.
"She's in a better place," he told her kissing her forehead.
"I feel so bad for her mom," Trudy said, "She was a single mother, with no other kids. The poor lady is all alone."
Adrian nodded. He'd never lost a child. When he'd lost Trudy… So to speak, he knew what it was like to be all alone however.
"It wouldn't have mattered if she was all alone or had a houseful of children," Marsha said after Trudy told her about the baby, "Losing a child is the most painful thing anyone could ever go through. I knew that pain for 10 years until your dad and I found out you were alive. That was the best day of my life."
"Mom, that was three months ago," Trudy pointed out, "How long is that going to be a big deal for?"
"Forever," Dwight and Marsha said in unison.
"Forever is a long time," Trudy laughed.
"I know," Marsha replied, "But this is a huge deal. You'll understand when you're a mom."
Trudy's phone rang. She picked it up.
She walked into the other room. A few minutes later she came back out.
"Adrian," she said; her eyes lighting up, "That was the orphanage. Hope's mom gave birth 2 months early."
"You two are parents?" Dwight exclaimed excitedly.
"We've got to get to SFGH," Trudy exclaimed
"Come on," Marsha said, "I'll drive you."
"Siana James' room," Trudy asked the receptionist.
"M– 134," the receptionist replied.
Adrian, Trudy, Dwight and Marsha took the elevator to maternity and went to room M– 134. Siana was lying on the bed holding Hope in her arms. Her eyes lit up when she saw Trudy and Adrian come in.
"Siana," Trudy smiled, "You did a great job. She's so beautiful."
"She really is," Siana said, smiling.
"I want to hold her," Marsha said.
Trudy laughed.
"Siana," she said, "You remember my mother, don't you?"
"Of course," Siana smiled, "Martha, right?"
"Close," Marsha said, "It's Marsha."
"Sorry," Siana said blushing.
She handed the baby to Marsha. Hope looked up at her with wide eyes.
"What are you calling her," Siana asked.
"Hope Julia Monk," Trudy said smiling.
"I love that name," Siana said.
Marsha handed Hope to Trudy. She looked up at her curiously. She wrapped her hand around Trudy's finger. At that moment she had her wrapped around her heart… as well as Adrian, Dwight and Marsha.
