A few days later, the doctor called back with the test results. Adrian was a match.
"I'm a match," he told Leland, "I can donate my bone marrow to Caroline."
Leland hugged him.
"Thank you Monk," he said, "You're like a brother to me."
"You're the same to me," Adrian said.
Leland and Adrian shared a hug. For some reason it didn't feel awkward.
"Is Trudy okay with you donating your bone marrow to Caroline?" Leland asked.
"I doubt she would have a problem with it," Adrian said, "Trudy's always doing things to help other people."
"Did the doctor tell you anything about donating?"
Adrian nodded.
"He told me it would be painful," he said, "I don't care. Caroline is worth it."
Marsha felt queasy again. She ran to the bathroom and threw up. Today the morning sickness was horrible. She knew it would be worth it in the end. Trudy and Adrian would have little Faith Mollie or Bryan Matthew.
You're doing this for Trudy, she reminded herself as she threw up for the sixth time in a row. Dwight came in and rubbed her back.
"How are you feeling," he asked her.
"Pregnant," she said with a small smile.
"I know," he replied, "I mean-"
"I hate the morning sickness," she interrupted; answering his question, "But I love our grandchild. He or she is Trudy's child… and Adrian's."
"Yes," Dwight replied, "Do you think it's a he or a she?"
"Oh," Marsha said, "It's absolutely a he or a she."
Dwight laughed.
"You said that when you were pregnant with Trudy too," he said, "Before we found out she was a girl."
Marsha paused.
"I think it's a girl," she admitted, "I felt the same way with the cravings when I was pregnant with Trudy and Trudy had a lot of morning sickness when she was pregnant with Molly."
Dwight remembered Trudy's morning sickness.
"I think you're right," he said after a moment, "But I don't care what it is. I already love this baby."
"So do I," Marsha replied.
"I know it's not our baby," Dwight said, "But it is Trudy and Adrian's baby. So in that way it is our baby."
"It's our baby's baby," Marsha said.
"I love you," Dwight told his wife.
Marsha's smile grew wide. She loved her husband too. He was her first love.
"I love you too," she told him.
"You're my first love," Dwight told Marsha, "Though Trudy is my most precious love."
"Mine too," Marsha said, "And Hope and the twins and this baby that's growing inside of me."
"I know what you mean," Dwight said smiling.
"You feel the same," Marsha said.
"I do," Dwight admitted, "But if it weren't for you, we wouldn't have had Trudy."
"And if it weren't for GOD," Marsha said, "We would never have gotten Trudy back."
Dwight's smile lit up his eyes. He knew Marsha was right.
"GOD has been wonderful to our family," Dwight said.
"Yes," Marsha replied, "Though He didn't have to wait ten years to reveal that Trudy was alive."
Dwight put his hand on top of Marsha's. She smiled as he brought her in for a kiss.
"I know," he said kissing her hand.
