Wendy pushed open the front doors of Shadyside Middle School and started down the front concrete steps.
She snickered at the thought of Nancy crying out in pain.
"Wendy! Wait up!" a voice shouted after her.
Wendy grumbled and kept walking as she heard pounding footsteps behind her.
Tina Barnes appeared beside Wendy, falling in step with her.
"I've been trying to talk to you all day long! Why are you giving me the silent treatment?" Tina demanded.
"Oh gee. I wonder why. Maybe it's because you LAUGHED at me!" Wendy snapped.
Tina fell silent for awhile.
"Well...why did you threaten Mrs. Anderson? And stomp on Nancy's foot?" Tina asked.
Wendy ignored her.
"Oh...talk to me for Christ's sake. I'm your friend! I'm trying to help you!" Tina said.
Wendy stopped suddenly.
"Are you?" Wendy demanded.
Tina looked at Wendy with worry in her eyes.
"Yes! I'm worried about you! You're never like this!" Tina said.
"I don't have time for this! Some friend!" Wendy said as she took off running down the sidewalk.
Wendy didn't stop running until she got home.
She opened the door and walked in.
"Wendy?" a voice called from the kitchen. "Is that you, dear?"
"Yes Mom!" Wendy called back.
She took off her shoes and set them next to the door.
"How was school? Are you hungry? You left quite early this morning?" her mother called.
"I'm not hungry! Just tired. But could you fix me a sandwich and chips for later?" Wendy asked.
She rushed upstairs, not even bothering to wait for her mother's reply.
After closing her bedroom door, she gazed at her reflection in the mirror.
Wendy took her clothes off and put on her pajamas.
She crawled into bed and pulled the covers up to her chin.
Within minutes, she was fast asleep.
