Tensions have risen within the command center of the Death Star as some Imperial generals and admirals assigned to the battle station were bickering over the situation within the galaxy, with one of the chairs serving as a reminder of the situation by being empty. Another chair was empty as well, but it was solely because the station's commander was not present in this meeting. The first empty chair was supposed to belong to Orson Krennic, the director of the Imperial Military Department of Advanced Weapons Research who overwatched the Death Star's construction, only to allow the chief engineer Galen Erso leak the information of the station to the Rebellion. Now, the Rebels were in the position of the station's plans.
General Tagge was arguing with Admiral Motti about the Death Star vulnerability. Tagge stated that the Imperial Senate would support the Rebellion, only for the station's commander, Grand Moff Tarkin, assure the old veteran that the senate would no longer be a problem as the Emperor has disbanded it. Entering the center along with Darth Vader, Tarkin also stated that the sector governors now had full authority over the sectors and systems they overwatch. The Sith Lord then assured Tagge that the plans would soon be back in Imperial hands.
"Any attack made against this station would be a useless gesture," Motti arrogantly interfered in the conversation. "This station is now the ultimate power in the universe!"
"The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Force." Darth Vader responded, only for the arrogant admiral to sneer.
"Don't try to frighten us, Lord Vader. Your sad devotion to that ancient religion has not helped you conjure up the stolen data tapes, or given you clairvoyance enough to find the rebel's hidden fort…"
What happened next, frightened some of the officers, except for a few such as Moff Tarkin and Colonel Yularen, as Vader raised his fist, Force-choking the young admiral.
"I find your lack of faith disturbing." Darth Vader spoke to Motti as he continued to choke him until Tarkin interfered.
"Enough of this! Vader, release him!" Tarkin demanded.
"As you wish, Governor Tarkin." Vader answered, releasing his grip on Motti's life.
"This bickering is pointless." Tarkin continued. "Lord Vader will provide us with the location of the rebel base by the time this station is operational. We will then crush the rebellion with one swift stroke."
On their journey to Anchorhead, Luke, Obi Wan C3PO and R2-D2 were shocked to see what was in front of them. It was one of the Jawa sandcrawlers in a horrible state, obviously attacked due to the holes from blaster shots. Observing the sight and bypassing the numerous corpses of Jawas, Luke presumed that the Sand People may have attacked.
"Only Imperial stormtroopers are so precise." Ben Kenobi argued. Luke immediately understood what this meant. The Empire was looking for the two Rebel droids and it may seem that they have found the sandcrawler in which they were.
"If they tracked the robots here, they may have learned who they sold them to. And that would lead them…" Luke added, realization hitting him. Ignoring Kenobi's protests, the teenage boy immediately set for his home, only to find it sacked.
"Uncle Owen! Aunt Beru!" Luke called for his family, but there was no answer, but silence. He soon found their bodies. They were savagely killed by the stormtroopers. Filled with grief, pain and anger, the young Luke Skywalker broke down as Kenobi and the droids caught up with him. After a period of grief, Luke stood up, addressing the old Jedi.
"I want to come with you to Alderaan. There's nothing here for me now." Luke told him. "I want to learn the ways of the Force and become a Jedi like my father."
Just as they entered the town of Mos Eisley, Luke's landspeeder was stopped by a company of stormtroopers, patrolling the town. The commander immediately demanded identifications for the two humans and especially the two droids. Suddenly, Obi Wan waved his hand slightly in front of the commander.
"You don't need to see our identifications." Ben told him, and what happened next surprised Luke.
"We don't need to see your identifications," the stormtrooper answered, as if agreeing with the old master.
"These are not the droids you're looking for." Ben then added.
"These are not the droids we're looking for. Move along." The commander answered, allowing the landspeeder to pass. Soon, Ben and Luke left the speeder, with R2 and C3PO following them as they headed towards a cantina, with the music being heard from it.
"I can't understand how we got by those troopers." Luke told Ben as the question was tormenting his mind.
"The Force can have a strong influence on the weak-minded." Ben explained as they approached the doorway.
"Do you really think we're going to find a pilot here?" Luke asked as he doubted the old man's decision to visit the bar.
"Most of the best freighter pilots can be found here." Ben explained as he took off his hood. While outside it was sunny and bright, but intensively hot, in the cantina it was dark, but cold and fresh. Various people of different races were present. Alongside humans there were Trandoshans, Dowutin, Twi'leks, Nikto, Nosaurians, etc. While Luke was talking with the bartender, Ben found a Wookie named Chewbacca, who was a member of the crew of a smuggler vessel called the Millennium Falcon. The Wookie led both the boy and Jedi to a table. Two humans sat, one male, one female. Both had brown hair, with the male wearing a black sleeveless jacket on top of his white shirt. The female wore light clothing and had a moderately short brown hair. Both of them seemed to be around in their 30s.
"Han Solo. I'm captain of the Millennium Falcon." The male introduced himself. "These are my crew; Qi'ra and Chewbacca. Chewie here tells me you're for passage to the Alderaan System."
"Yes, indeed. If it's a fast ship." Ben answered. Han Solo immediately seemed to be slightly offended by the look on his face.
"Fast ship? We've outrun Imperial starships!" Qi'ra spoke for the first time. "What's the cargo?"
"Myself, the boy, two droids, and no questions. We'd like to avoid any Imperial entanglements."
"Well, it's gonna cost you something extra. Ten thousand, all in advance." Han told him.
"Ten thousand?" Luke yelled. "We could almost buy our own ship for that!"
"And who's going fly it, kid? You?" Han cheekily asked, smirking. Only for Qi'ra to press her hand against his shoulder.
"You bet I could. I'm not such a bad pilot myself!" Luke proudly declared, only for Obi Wan to interfere.
"We can pay you two thousand now, plus fifteen when we reach Alderaan."
"Seventeen?" Han asked, obviously delighted. "Okay, you guys got yourself a ship. We'll leave as soon as you're ready. Docking bay 94."
Nodding, Ben led Luke out of the cantina in order to sell the speeder. Han looked at both Chewbacca and Qi'ra.
"Seventeen thousand! This could finally save our necks," the smuggler told his partners-in-crime. "Get back to the ship and get her ready."
The two left, leaving Han alone. He was about to leave himself until a Rhodian cornered him, holding the smuggler at gunpoint.
"Koona t'chuta Solo? (Going somewhere Solo)" the Rhodian asked in Huttese.
"Yes, Greedo. As a matter of fact, I was just going to see your boss. Tell Jabba that I've got his money." Han answered as he returned to his seat.
"Soong peetch alay. (It's too late)" Greedo told him. "Ee mara tom tee tok maky cheesa. Jabba won neechee kochba mu shanee wy tonny wya uska. Chosky nowy u chusu." (You should have paid him when you had the chance. Jabba put a price on your head so large, every bounty hunter in the galaxy will be looking for you. I'm lucky I found you first.)
"Hey, I'll make a scheme, and I'll repay my debt." Han told him.
"Sone guru ye buya nyah oo won spasteega koo shu coon bon duwa weeptee. (He has no time for smugglers who drop their shipments at the first sign of an Imperial cruiser)" Greedo told him, still pointing the blaster at Han.
"Come on. Even I get boarded sometimes. Do you think I had a choice?" Han argued.
"Talk Jabba. (Tell that to Jabba)" Greedo told him. "Boompa kom bok nee aht am bompah." (He may only take your ship)
"Over my dead body," the smuggler answered, while silently reaching for his blaster.
"Nuklee numaa" (that's the idea) Greedo sneered. Suddenly, Han quickly drew out his blaster, shouting into the Rhodian's heart straight, killing him instantly. Apologising to the bartender for the mess, Han quickly went straight towards the hangar where his ship was kept.
Grand Moff Tarkin stood as he observed the main control room of the Death Star. It was from here, they fired the new superweapon of the Empire; destroying a holy city on Jedha, and then the Imperial Centre of Military Research on Scarif when the Rebels attacked it. Tarkin growled, cursing the now dead Director Krennic for his foolishness. It was all his fault, he did not maintain control over Galen Erso, despite the chief engineer of the station's construction already having doubts of the righteousness of the Empire's policies. Which obviously led to treason as he leaked the information to the Rebellion. Back then above Jedha, Tarkin warned Krennic that if the knowledge of the station would become public, many systems would flock to the rebellion.
He was right. Tarkin and his men did all what they could to not allow the Imperial Senate discover the true reason of the city's destruction. Still, the Rebels already know about the station's existence, and the Empire still did not know where their base was. Sighing heavily, Tarkin turned towards Vader, who towered above him. The torture of Princess Leia gave no information on the Rebel base.
"Perhaps she would respond to an alternative form of persuasion," the Grand Moff suggested. "I think it is time we demonstrated the full power of this station."
Turning to Tagge, he ordered the general to set course for Leia's home planet of Alderaan.
