"Hey." Sara leans against the doorframe of Grissom's office and smiles at him when he looks up.
"Hello." He goes back to watching Stevie crawl over his hand. "How was your scene?"
"Turns out our vic wanted to go stargazing and thought he'd enhance the experience with some mushrooms. Picked himself obviously." She shakes her head.
"Let me guess." Grissom looks up "Picked the wrong ones?"
"Amanita phalloides" She walks in and puts the report on his desk.
"Death Caps." Grissom just shakes his head and looks past Sara to make sure nobody else is about to walk in "Are you coming over today?"
"Of course, although I promised Greg and Sofia I'd go to breakfast with them. Will you join us?"
Grissom stands and scoops the tarantula back into the terrarium "No. Thank you." He slides the lid back onto the cage and again checks to makes sure they're alone. "I thought we might take Hank for a walk later"
"Sounds like a date, I'll be over as soon as we're done." She smirks at him as she leaves and as he lifts Stevie back on to the shelf he can't help but feel like he wants to stop making dates to see his wife.
… … … … … …
Sofia excuses herself not too long after finishing breakfast leaving Sara and Greg to finish some more coffee before leaving. "So…" Greg looks at Sara and she looks over the rim of her cup at him, she's been expecting this conversation for a few days and was surprised that Greg had managed to hold off for so long. "You and Grissom…"
"Grissom and I what?" Sara smirks, she's messing with him and they both know it.
"You're together, like together together." He's nervous asking her about her relationship.
"You could call it that." She shakes her head.
Greg picks up the fork and pokes at his empty plate "Were you joking the other day about being married?"
Sara's first thought is to lie. Admitting the truth would lead to more questions but it's also Greg, they share a special bond. Of course, she's aware of Greg's crush but she also knows that they both know it's not going to happen. "No."
Greg doesn't know what to say and they sit in an uncomfortable silence for a few minutes before he finally looks at her and see's that she's as nervous as he is confused. "I get the impression you don't really want to talk about it."
"I don't want anyone to treat me differently because of who I married." She keeps a tight grip on her cup to avoid fidgeting too much. It's not a lie but it's not entirely the truth either "Grissom and I, it's…"
Greg realises he understands. "It's private I get it. It's just weird to me that's all. Imaging you and Grissom married, all 'I Love Lucy' you get me?"
Sara laughs "We're not quite there yet."
"You've got the dog. You just need the 2.4 kids and the picket fence. Then boom. Perfect American family" Greg shrugs and Sara laughs. "Can I ask a question though?" Greg looks just as nervous as Sara feels at that point and she just nods. "Are you happy?"
She thinks for a moment and smiles. "Yeah. Yeah, I'm happy."
"I suppose I can't be mad at you for that." Greg smiles at her and she just laughs. "I'm beat and you've got a super-secret husband to get home to." Sara shakes her head and laughs again.
… … … … … …
She slides the key in the lock and opens the front door. It still feels a little bizarre to be letting herself into Grissom's house but she'd tried to give him the spare key back and he'd just waved her off. As she pushes the door open she calls out a greeting and suddenly 70lbs of dog comes flying round the corner and nearly knocks her off her feet.
"Hi" Grissom stands in the hallway book in hand and glasses slipped to the end of his nose. "How was breakfast?"
"It was nice, you should have come. Greg had questions. He was sensible enough not to ask them in front of Sofia." She then takes him in, he's wearing sweats and a t-shirt. Clearly ready for bed but insisting on waiting up for her. "You didn't have to wait up."
"I wanted to." He stands to the side so that she could pass him in the hallway. "Do you want a cup of coffee?"
She purses her lips and looks at him again, feeling special that she's one of the few people that he trusts to let in his space and see him relaxed. She remembers a conversation with Warrick during her first year in Vegas and he asked if she knew what he drinks when he goes out at night and she answered no but now she knows. He'll drink scotch or beer because that's what's expected, there's a decent bottle in his liquor cabinet but it only comes out for Jim, he has vodka for Catherine but really he prefers a nice glass of red wine. "Sara?" His voice breaks her out of her thoughts.
"Yeah?" She looks at him and he's looking at her confused.
"I asked if you wanted a coffee. What were you thinking about?" He just keeps looking at her.
"Sorry." She doesn't expand on what she was thinking. "Have you had breakfast?" She holds up the bag of muffins she'd brought back from the diner.
"Oatmeal." He answers still looking at her.
"I'll leave these in the kitchen and then head up to bed." She gives him a kiss which seems to pacify him and he follows her up the stairs to the bedroom.
Later when they both wake up and they're on the way out to Lake Mead he seems pensive like he wants to ask her something. "Are you ok Gil?"
"Yeah I'm fine." He looked at her. "I thought we'd hike the Historic Railroad Trail, should take 4 hours or so."
"Great." She turns and looks at the dog who's sat up in the back of the car of tongue hanging out of his head panting happily as they go for a ride. "I've always wanted to walk that one." Grissom just turns and smiles at her.
They get part of the way around the trail and stop at the view point and as Sara leans against a rock taking in the view of Lake Mead and Grissom hands her a bottle of water. "Did you know that this trail is the only remaining part of the Hoover Dam Railroad system that isn't underwater?" She smiles and shakes her head. "All the tunnels are oversized to fit the equipment and materials being transported to the dam. The railway had nine steam locomotives and four gas powered ones, it took 71 people to operate."
Sara just laughs "Of course you know all this." Grissom just shrugs in response and adjusts his straw hat and Hank starts tugging on his leash to try and get them to keep walking. "Someone is keen to keep walking."
Grissom roles his eyes "Someone is only two and half years old instead of 48"
"So he's what 17 and a half in dog years?" She laughs
"Actually he's more like 26." Grissom tells her in a voice Sara calls his teacher voice and realises that there's a lecture coming "The first year of a dog's life is equal to about 15 human years, 9 for the second year and then after that it's more like 4 or 5 years for every human year." Sara just shakes her head and laughs. Grissom goes quiet for a few minutes and just as she recognises his teacher voice she also recognises the sign that he's about to ask or say something that makes him uncomfortable.
Sara decides to throw him a bone "You know, if you're about to break up with me Gil you probably shouldn't have taken me out to a hiking trail. I know how to make it look like an accident." He turns and looks at her in horror. "I was kidding." She reassures him.
"I'm not breaking up with you." He tells her
"I know." She reaches out and squeezes his hand.
"I was going to ask about you moving in with us." He doesn't look at her, afraid of seeing her answer in her face.
"Us?" She looks at him
"Hank and I" He keeps his voice light and hopes she doesn't hear the hope in his voice.
"Uhh…" Sara's not quite sure what to say, she's over more days than she isn't but if she moved in it would be real.
Grissom quickly interrupts before she can say no "Think about it ok."
"Yeah I'll think about it." She tells him but he can hear the uncertainty in her voice and they don't speak much for the remainder of the walk.
… … … … … …
"Greg." Sara doesn't look up but she can feel his excitable energy behind her.
"I can't stop thinking about you know what. I have so many questions."
"Really?" She turns and looks at him "Like what?"
Greg wasn't expecting her to answer him. "I don't know, I just always assumed he went home in the morning and plugged into charge or that his house looked more like Torech Ungol than somewhere where humans lived." He grins at her so she knows he's joking and that he's accepting the relationship between her and Grissom and maybe if Greg's accepting it then the others will too because if she's being honest with herself the worry about how the others will react is one of her concerns about her marriage (not necessarily her relationship) becoming public knowledge.
"Torech Ungol?"
"The lair of the giant spider Shelob." Greg says cautiously perhaps this is a bit too much nerd even for Sara "From Lord of the Rings."
"It's a house. Perfectly fit for human habitation." She can see he's about to make another joke and decides to cut him off. "Did you get the results back from trace?" She asks bring him back to the case that he's working with her.
"Sure did and Grissom thinks it might be connected to one from the fish board so you should probably go talk to him about that."
She takes his advice and walks to his office where she sees through the window he's talking to Brass and she manages to catch bits of what he's saying. "I don't get it." Grissom rubs his hand on his face "She's there all the time, it's like she doesn't even have her own place." He sounds frustrated Sara thinks and he's talking to Brass about her. It confuses her, the tone makes it sound like he's annoyed that she's always in his house instead of her own but hadn't he just asked her to move in? 'Only after you joked about breaking up with him' the voice in her head tells her and she backs away from his office wondering if she backed him into a corner. They'd discussed their fears about the relationship and Grissom admitted one of his was always that she'd leave him but did he really want her in his space all the time?
