"Ok, we're going to be short for a week or so." Grissom said as he looked at Greg and Sara in the breakroom. "Until Catherine and the others re-join us." Sofia had left the shift the week before to become a detective out in Boulder City and Grissom was just waiting for the swing shift vacancies to be filled before Catherine, Warrick and Nick (when he was able to) came back to the team.
"Ecklie actually agreed to it?" Greg looks at Grissom in shock and Grissom just shrugs.
Instead of replying to Greg he just hands him an assignment slip "You and Sara have a DB on the strip."
"What about you?" Sara asks
"I have a date with some insects from a day shift case." He walks out of the room with his coffee and leaves Sara and Greg in the breakroom.
"So…" Greg looks at Sara
"So what Greg?"
"Are you going to tell me?" He asks
"Tell you what?" She knows exactly what he's asking about.
"You guys made up right?"
"Yes Greg." She gives nothing away.
"Damn. There goes my chance." He grins at her "To think I was going to try and lure you over for another breakfast date."
Sara laughed "I'll never say no to chocolate banana pancakes shaped like dollar store mickey mouse. We've got a scene to get to."
… … … … … …
"So did that…?" Greg looks at Sara as they had back to the lab following the bizzsrest case either of them had ever worked (and that says a lot considering it's Vegas)
"Yeah" Sara just looks ahead at the road, their light goes green and she pulls out into the junction.
"I will never underestimate the stupidity of the human race." They both laugh and then suddenly there's a loud crash and everything goes dark.
Sara wakes again and finds a beat cop crouched next to her window. "Miss Sidle are you alright?" The cop asks.
"I'm all good." She looked around "Is Greg ok?"
"He's fine, he's looking out for Doctor Grissom, we called him to let him know what happened." The cop looks over his shoulder. "The fire department are going to pop the door off and get you out."
10 minutes later and the door is off and Sara is being taken out of the car "Sara?"
Of course it would be him, out of everyone he would be the person who showed up. "Hank."
"I'll um, get someone else." Hank goes and talks to a colleague who comes over and convinces Sara to get on the back of the ambulance. Greg agrees to stay and make sure the evidence gets back to the lab ok.
"Sara!" Grissom's voice comes over the phone as she dials him from the back of the ambulance.
"I'm fine, they just want to check I'm ok. I'm on my way to…" she looks over at the paramedic in the back of the ambulance who mouths the name of the hospital at her "…Desert Palm as a precaution."
… … … … … …
Grissom finds Sara napping in the ER when he arrives a little later, he goes into the cubicle and gently caresses her head noting the addition of a few stitches below her hairline. "Hi." She tells him softly and he looks over at her face and notices she's smiling at him. "I'm ok."
"I was worried." He says softly.
"Just some cuts and bruises." She tells him, choosing to omit the part of the story where she was out cold.
"Miss Sidle?" The doctor walks in the room and looks over at Grissom with a question etched on his face.
"My boss." Sara tells him and sits up.
Grissom quirks an eyebrow at her before looking at the doctor "Gil Grissom, Sara's husband."
The doctor nods "How are you feeling?"
"A little sore." She admits. "My head hurts."
"We're going to keep you for a few hours just for observation. I'm told you were unconscious for a short while." Grissom looks over at her sharply, she'd failed to mention that, as had Greg when he'd arrived at the scene. "Then your husband here can take you home, I'm much happier now that I know you're not going home alone."
"I could leave now." Sara looks hopefully at the doctor.
"No." Both Grissom and the doctor say but the latter sounds much more apologetic. Sara grumbles and eventually the doctor leaves the room. "I know what you're about to say" Grissom tells her and she just raises an eyebrow "I'm perfectly capable of looking after myself Gil." He puts on a high pitch voice. "I know you are but I'm still going to insist on doing it honey." He leans down and kisses her.
She crosses her arms, it's sweet she knows. "I don't sound like that." She mumbles instead and Grissom just laughs.
"I'm going to go ask the doctor how long he wants to keep you here." Grissom stands and pulls back the curtain and walks out into the ER when he almost walks straight into a paramedic. "Sorry."
"That's OK. Is Sara awake?" The man asks and Grissom gives him a once over, he's young and attractive. "I was at the accident earlier and wanted to check she was ok." It was then Grissom sees his name tag 'Pettigrew'
"I don't think Sara wants to see you." Grissom tells Hank.
"Isn't that Sara's choice?" Hank vaguely recognises the man, he thinks he's Sara's boss Gibson or something like that.
"Just like seeing two women was your choice." Grissom tells him calmly although inside the dumb jealous man part of him wants to punch Hank in the face.
"She told you about that?" Hank sounds unsure, he doesn't remember Sara and her boss being close, if anything he remembers her complaining about him a lot.
"My wife and I don't keep secrets from each other." Grissom tells him.
"Who are you talking to?" Sara asked as she pulled back the curtain. "Oh."
"I just wanted to check you were ok." Hank holds his hands up "Which I can see you are. Congratulations by the way." He turns and walks away.
"We're changing the dogs name" Grissom tells her. "You should be back in bed."
… … … … … …
Despite her insistence that she was fine the doctor insists that she stay for observation for a number of hours. Grissom, at Sara's insistence goes to help Greg and picks her up when he's done with work and by the time they make it home the pain medication that they'd given her is starting to wear off and Grissom can't tell if she's grumpy because she's tired, in pain or because he won and she had to stay in the hospital.
He opens the door tries to control the dog who is happy to see both of them when they come home from work and steers Sara onto the couch with the promise of breakfast. Although when he comes to bring her some juice and a pain pill he finds her fast asleep on the couch and whilst he's 100% sure she'd be more comfortable in bed he decides to leave her sleeping and goes to bed himself.
Grissom wakes a few hours later to the sound of cursing coming from the lounge and swings himself out of bed "If my mother knew what you were saying, she'd wash your mouth out with soap."
"Your mother is deaf." Sara groans as she gives up on standing and flops back onto the couch and groans again. "This couch isn't comfortable."
"You've never complained before." Grissom goes over and helps pull her to her feet. "And my Mom? She always knows."
"I've never been hit by a drunk idiot in a truck before and then slept on the couch." She gives him a pointed look and feels guilty, perhaps he should have woken her, he helps her to bed and then disappears bringing her a pain pill and some water before slipping into the bed next to her with a newspaper.
"Can I put my boss hat on, instead of my concerned husband hat for a second?" He asks her as he does the crossword.
"I'd prefer you didn't when we're in bed but go on." She has to admit that she's a little curious about what he has to say.
"I've given you a week of medical leave…" He holds a finger up to cut her off. "Get out of bed without help and I'll let you go to work." She huffs and mumbles an expletive at him before agreeing. "Excellent. Now, as your husband I should let you know that I have a three day weekend and I thought we could use it to move your stuff over?"
"Sure." She sounds far away as her pain pill kicks in. "Gil?" He looks over at her. "I don't think I'll be getting up for a few days, do you think you could go get the TV from my apartment and bring it over?"
"Sure."
… … … … … …
After a day or two Sara finally felt well enough to shuffle down to the living room and continued to complain about the couch. After days of moving between the bedroom and living room she's finally had enough "Gil?" He looked over from where he was sat on the end of the couch. "We're getting a new couch."
He thinks for a second before he answers "OK"
"Gil?" She stares at him with pursed lips "You're not changing the dogs name."
"No?" He looks over at her. "I think he looks like a Bruno." She just shakes her head. "You disagree?"
She doesn't feel like his suggestion warrants a response "Are we still going to my apartment later?"
"Yes."
"There's a furniture shop on the way." Her tone implies it is non-negotiable.
"Don't you have a couch?"
"I do, it's old and I've been meaning to replace it." Grissom just shrugs, he guesses they're going furniture shopping.
… … … … … …
"No." She tells him.
"What's wrong with it?" He's lost count of how many couches they've looked at and this is the fourth furniture store they've been to. He waits for the next excuse.
"The back is squishy but the seat cushions are too hard." He shakes his head and walks over to another couch. "No." Grissom turns and looks at her again with a helpless look "The texture of the fabric, we have a dog." She tells him like it should be obvious "Dog hair. It'll be a bitch to clean and his claws might tear the furniture. We need a leather couch."
Grissom had no idea how much thought went into the purchasing a couch just nodded. "Sara it's been hours, can we take a break on the couch shopping? We've still got to pack up your apartment."
"Fine." He places a hand on the small of her back and leads her from the store offering a smile at the sales assistant as they leave.
They finally make it to Sara's apartment and begin packing her knick-knacks away into carton's that Grissom had brought in his car. "Honey?" He looks up from her desk, he'd moved one of her plants and found a picture stuck to the wall behind it. "What's this?"
Sara looks over and laughs "I remember the day we took that." She shuffles over, she's still in a bit of pain that's only been made worse shuffling around and packing the stuff that she hadn't already moved to Grissom's. "I gave you a tour of the city and we posed for this. You told me to keep the photo."
Grissom smiles "I remember." He takes the care to place the photo on top of the box. "I knew I'd met someone special that day." He folds the box "Did you put post-its on everything you want to keep?" The switch back to the task at hand baffles her. "Good. I think that's enough lifting for you today. Did you bring your pain pills?" She shakes her head and he gives her that look, the one usually reserved for Greg when he messes up. "Lets go home Sara."
… … … … … …
Grissom thought she'd forgotten about the couch thing until she wakes up one morning with a fresh cup of coffee, a kiss and a promise that they will be buying a new couch. So as he finds himself in furniture store 437 (he assumes, he lost count after the fifth) and looking at what must be the million and first couch. "Gil?" He looks up and Sara's just looking at him as if she's waiting for his opinion on the couch (he doesn't know why, he knows whatever he says will be the wrong thing).
"Do you like it?" He tries
"I was asking you that." She quirks an eyebrow, a move she's learned from him.
"Do we even need a new couch?" It's clearly the wrong thing to say and the other poor husband whose been dragged shopping just gives him a look and shakes his head. Sara just throws her hand up in the air and walks away from.
"The answer, if you're wondering buddy, is 'I think it's great hon' do you think it'll fit?" The random husband whispers as he passes Grissom and just claps him on the shoulder. Grissom frowns and looks for Sara who he finds sat on a couch at the back of the store.
He sits next to her "Sorry." He tells her and tentatively lifts an arm and puts it on the back of the couch. "If it helps, I really like this couch we're sat on now."
She's quiet for a minute. "Me too."
"I think this is the one." He looks around and quickly gestures to the sales assistant who grabs some paperwork and starts heading over. "Not too squishy, not too firm. Definitely nap and cuddle friendly and…" he picks up the information sheet behind her "…it's pet friendly as well."
"You have been listening." She smiles at him and he just shrugs.
