Sara walks into the briefing room and smiles. Sat around the table is Catherine, Nick and Warrick "Hey Sar'" Nick greets her warmly.
"Hey girl!" Warrick grins and pulls out the chair in between him and Greg for her to slide in. Catherine doesn't say anything, she looks at Sara curiously and quickly glances at her ringless left hand. She doesn't say anything though and nobody but Sara notices her strange behaviour.
"Hey Grissom check it out!" Greg says as their supervisor walks into the room still reading their assignment slips.
"Hmmm?" Grissom glances up at Greg.
"The band's back together!"
"For now." Grissom says as he pulls the first slip off the stack and hands it to Warrick. "Rick, Sara 406 at the retro arcade on Flamingo." He hands the next slip to Catherine, "Greg and Catherine you have a Prowler out in Summerlin, multiple calls. Seems to have pressed up against the windows." Then the final slip he keeps "Nicky you and I have a 414 at the Rampart."
Warrick and Sara are the first to leave as she walks past Grissom she offers him a small smile which he returns and their hands brush as they pass each other. The gesture is missed except by Catherine who is looking for it. Greg catches Catherine's stare. Nick and Grissom leave the room and Catherine follows Grissom with her eyes as he leaves.
"Oh my god!" Greg says and looks at her open mouthed. "You know."
"I know what?" She replies carefully.
"I think you know what I know." Greg looks and Catherine just looks at him eyebrows raised. "Do they know you know?"
"I do know what you know." She tries. "And they know that I know. They know that I know you know."
"How?" Greg grins
"Busted them at dinner together."
"The other night?" Catherine nods at his question "I bet you're the reason I didn't get a doggy bag. I knew Grissom was in a weird mood. Weird even for him."
They don't talk about it again until they're safely in the Denali on the way to their scene. "I knew there had to be some reason Grissom was letting you stay in his spare room. He never lets anyone stay over but I bet Sara had something to do with it. I got spare room privileges once for one night, when Eddie and I had a huge blow up when I was pregnant with Lindsey."
"Probably." Greg laughs, he knows as well as Catherine does that he'd still be in a crappy motel if it wasn't for Sara.
"How did you find out."
"I asked." Greg shrugs. "I just came right out and asked Sara." There's more to the story but he's not about to admit that Curtis is the one that figured it out.
"Figures." Catherine shakes her head. "I told him that I thought Sara was seeing someone you know what his response was?" Greg shakes his head "That if Sara was seeing someone then it's her business."
"Sounds like Grissom."
"What I don't get is why they're keeping it quiet. They're married, I'm assuming Ecklie knows and it's not like there's rules against it." Catherine glances over at Greg
"Sara has her reasons, I think she's worried people won't respect her."
"Well that's nonsense, she's more than proved herself since she's been here." Catherine sounds exasperated although, she thinks she gets it. Law Enforcement, even the science side is a male dominated environment and sleeping with the boss, even if you are married to him can only lead to unnecessary rumours. However, there's a part of her that's mad, Grissom and Sara know the team better than that. She and Greg work their scene and as they're printing windows she looks at Greg and realises that he's probably the best bet to get answers out of.
"Hey Greg?" She asks as they're loading their kits back into the Denali a couple of hours later.
"Yo"
"You hungry?"
"Yeah."
"I have a real craving for a burger. They're on me." Greg just smiles and jumps in the car. Catherine shakes her head, easier than expected, now it was time for part two of her plan. Get Greg fed and happy and hit him up for information. She leads Greg into a corner booth and hands him a menu.
"So?" Greg looks up over his menu and looks right at Catherine.
"So what?" She's confused
"What are you going to ask me?" He puts the menu down and raises his eyebrow in a move clearly learned from Grissom and with a smirk he must of picked up from Sara.
Catherine wonders when Greg got so astute before answering cautiously "Ask you what?"
"You want to know what I know and what they're like at home." He leans back in his seat and crosses his arms with a smug look on his face. "I'm not dumb and I definitely don't have any desire to be back in a motel, which is where Grissom will send me if he finds out I blabbed."
"How long have you known?" Catherine looks him straight in the eye "Surely I can ask that?"
"A few months." Then anticipating her next question "Their dog was sick and my roommate is a vet, Grissom's vet as it turns out. I passed him a message and Sara knew far too much about the dog and so I just asked and she admitted it." He couldn't help himself then "Brass knows as well. Again, that was Sara's fault. Apparently he was at Grissom's place and she just walked in, didn't see him and kissed him right on the mouth." Catherine laughed at that.
"Is it weird? Seeing them together as a couple?"
"At first yeah, like Sara and I we hang out and it's not really an issue, it's there in the background but sometimes I'd get reminded and it's a shock. Then, I moved in and honestly being in Grissom's house is kind of strange. I don't know." He offers a half shrug "I have a hard time picturing him outside the lab and suddenly he's there on the couch in jeans, I didn't even know he owned jeans and a sweat shirt with a beer watching baseball or some documentary. Sara's sat on the other side of the couch and they're not speaking but it's comfortable you know?" Catherine nods she knows what he means. "Doesn't mean it's not super weird." He grins and Catherine smiles back, ever since the lab explosion they had a special relationship. It wasn't like it was with Gil or Sara and Greg, they weren't the best of friends but every now and again they found time for a coffee.
… … … … … …
Catherine sauntered into Grissom's office and sits in the chair in front of his desk. Grissom just continues to do his paperwork and doesn't even look up before he says "Catherine"
"Gil." She says patiently. They've played this game before when Grissom doesn't want to have a particular conversation. She knows she can wait him out.
And wait him out she does it takes a full five minutes before he finally caves and says "How can I help you?"
"Congratulations." She tells him with an incredulous shake of her head.
"Thank you." He refuses to acknowledge her point.
"When?"
"A few months."
Catherine just rolls her eyes at his answer "Gil you know that's not what I'm asking."
Grissom finally puts his pen down and looks at her over his glasses "Just what are you asking Catherine?"
"It's just a little surprising that's all, you and Sara married, neither of you have said anything."
"We didn't want people to know."
"We didn't or you didn't?"
"We didn't. We have our reasons, now Cath if you don't mind I have a lot of paperwork to catch up on." Grissom nods towards the door and Catherine whilst recognising the dismissal gave him a look that made it clear that this was a conversation that they would be following up on.
… … … … … …
Grissom comes home and finds Sara sat on the bed reading a book. "Hey" She doesn't look up as she greets him but Hank does and Grissom rewards him with a scratch behind the ears. "I saw you were in your office with Catherine. How did that go?"
"She had some questions." Grissom shrugged and frowned as he watched Sara work her jaw.
"Greg said, I don't think he revealed too much" She works her jaw again.
"Are you ok honey?"
"Just a tooth ache. I'm sure it'll pass."
