Sara was able to get Vehn out of prison and away from Kadara. Sloan was pissed, but she never pointed fingers at her or Reyes. Ryder wanted to see him again, she'd been in her room most of the day. They were stuck on Kadara all week as Gil and Kallo argued some more about what upgrades the Tempest needed.
As long as it didn't affect their work, she didn't mind them squabbling like kids. She was sitting at her desk when her terminal alerted her to an email. It was from Reyes.
To: Sara Ryder.
From: Reyes Vidal.
Subject: Drinks.
Ryder,
Evfra sent word he's got Vehn. He'll be sent to trial soon.
I have a business venture for you. Come see me at Tartarus when you can. Drinks on me.
I promise.
Reyes.
She read the email a few times over. She didn't know if this business venture was a good idea. She was the Pathfinder and is representing the Initiative. "SAM, have we got any plans today?"
Her AI terminal lit up as the small blue orb of Sam spun freely around it. "No, Pathfinder. Though I have seen reports of multiple murders in Kadara port that might pique your interest."
She narrows her eyes at the terminal "Why? Murders are everyday life in Kadara aren't they?"
"Usually yes, but I sense a pattern. An Angara body has been found outside Kralla's song. I might be able to get more information via your scanner." Ryder grabs her black leather jacket and heads out. Bumping into Vetra as she does.
"Hey, Ryder. Off out?" she asks from her station by the Nomad.
Ryder pulls her long hair back into a high ponytail. "Yeah, got some stuff to look into." She pauses before walking down the ramp. "What do you know about Reyes Vidal?"
Vetra looks up from her omni-tool, she definitely knew that name from how tight her mandibles went. "Many have different opinions about him. I don't care for the man, he's just as likely to kill you as he is to help you."
"Good to know," she hardly replies as she leaves. She didn't expect much from Reyes, but she at least wanted something good to off with him. Sara was the first to admit, she wasn't the nicest of people either. She can be manipulative, sarcastic or plain rude when she wants to be.
She first headed to the sight of the Angaran body. Turns out he was poisoned and was an active Milky Way supporter. The Outcasts didn't care much, turns out the man never paid his protection fees so he was on his own. SAM pointed out Reyes might know more about it.
Kadara was boiling hot like usual, the perk of having SAM, he could keep her body temperature low enough she won't sweat to death. She headed to the lift, Tartarus was down in the area called the slums. Its name gave it away, it was homes stacked on top of each other like slums. The bar was the biggest building of them all there.
"SAM, who owns Tartarus, Reyes?" she asks as the slow lift took her down through the deep bedrock. It was very cool, a nice breeze blew through and up it.
"Kian Dagher. An Irish human owns the bar. Reyes is one of his best-paying customers. It seems most of Mr Vidal's business happens within the private room that is at the top of the stairs as you walk in. Warning, Pathfinder. Many might think you are an evening dancer," he says through her private channel.
Ryder rolls her eyes. "Brilliant," she mumbles. The lift comes to a stop and she walks across the wet rocks and moss to the slums in the far corner. But the low toned voices took her off course, she went down the back alley. Finding a male and female human looting a dead Salarian.
"Hey!" she shouts at them. "The fuck you doing?" The female scoffs at her, turning to push her back a few paces.
"Get lost, we have every right to this body. He's dead anyway," she shouts in her face. Sara pushes her straight back.
"It's sick to know people like you do this. Just fuck off and leave the body be." Ryder was ready to go five rounds with them both. She had her gun on her this time, not caring about the rules shitty Sloan had.
"Pathfinder," SAM says with a stern voice. "These two are not worth our time. We should go find Mr Vidal." Ryder weighed her options, but SAM was right. She backs away, not without flipping them both off as she stalks off.
"Sorry, it just pisses me off," she says to herself. She walks up the stairs to Tartarus. The smell of smoke and alcohol already hitting her.
"I understand, Ryder. But we cannot fix everything on Kadara," SAM replies. Ryder walks in, the lights almost take her completely off guard. She went from the bright outdoors to total darkness with red lights and smoke screens covering the whole upper level. "Mr Vidal's room is right across from where you're standing. I have let him know you are here, you may proceed inside."
"Thanks, buddy," she replies as she slowly walks through the hoards of people. It was packed, there were cages with different species inside freely dancing their hearts away. Others passed out drunk and some were arguing about utter nonsense.
Ryder got to Reye's door. Knocking even though SAM had told her she could walk straight in. The door opens up and Reyes is sitting in the far corner on a long rounded couch, there is a table next to him and a terminal across the small room. "Thanks, Miri, tell Kiran I'll have my usual bottle with two glasses. Put it on my tab."
"Of course, Mr Vidal," the Asari replies as she smiles at Ryder and leaves. Reyes waves her over, putting his datapad down to look at her.
"Well, here I thought you were ghosting me. Looking beautiful as ever." Ryder just rolls her eyes at him, sitting down further from him. "Sitting so far away?" he asks with a pout.
"Cut the crap, Reyes," she warns. "I got your email. Stopped to check this body outside Kralla's song, you heard about it?" He nods. "He was Angaran," she adds.
Reyes raises a brow at her. "And? Find anything?" She nods, getting the scans up from SAM to send to him. "Poison? A little bit... professional for Kadara standards."
"I think it's the Charlatan," Sara points out. Reyes smirks, shaking his head as he closes his omni-tool.
"The Charlatan isn't this dumb to leave a body in the open. Whoever did this wanted to send a message? I think it's someone who might not like us Milkyway species." Ryder thought about it, it made sense. The victims were either Milkyway residents or the supportive Angara.
"This Angara was actively supporting the Initiative. You're thinking what I'm thinking?" she asks with a smirk. Reyes nods, leaning back in his seat.
"Roekaar," he answers. She nods in agreement. The Roekaar were an Angaran ran gang. The leader Akksul hated aliens with a passion. He only fought the Kett up until the Nexus teams showed up. He came to Kadara straight after Sloan took the port, fighting the Outcast and Collective every day.
"Well, that answers that. Now what?" she asks. The same Asari bartender comes back in. A tray in her hand with a bottle of whiskey and two glasses on it.
"Thanks, Miri," Reyes says as he leans over to open the bottle and fill the glasses. She bows and leaves again. Reyes passes her a glass.
"That's not the same dry shit from Kralla's song is it?" she asks. Reyes puts a hand to his heart.
"Wow, Ryder. You hurt me. No, this is much better," he says, waving the glass in front of her. Ryder takes it, SAM scans it and confirms it's a different one. He assures her it's not the same 'cheap' stuff.
"Thanks, SAM," she mumbles as she takes a sip. It actually was nice. Reyes watches her as she downs the rest. He quickly fills the glass back up.
"Tell me, Ryder. That SAM of yours, what can it exactly do?" Sara stops with the glass to her lips.
"HIm," she firstly corrects before downing the next drink. This was probably the best whiskey she's had since getting to Andromeda. "And he helps with hacking, decryption, language learning and using remnant." Reyes nods along, then raises a brow at her.
"Wow, I could do with one. Make my work easier," he adds. Sara snorted at him.
"SAM is a one of a kind AI. He likes to keep his work within the book, ain't that right, buddy?" Sara's omni-tool lit up so SAM could speak out of it.
"Your assumptions are correct, Pathfinder. But if I must break those rules to protect you, then I shall do so." Ryder smiles at her omni-tool. She sometimes wishes SAM had a body, she'd love to hug him for the amount of time she's saved her and the crew asses.
"Well, glad to see you keep her safe, SAM," Reyes says.
"I appreciate your words, Mr VIdal," SAM says before disappearing to whatever task he usually does when Ryder doesn't need him. He usually works with the crew, goes through junk mail and helps the Nexus scientist when they need it.
"I think he likes you," Ryder says. Reyes had filed her glass her third time, he barely even finished his second. She slowed down at that point, whilst she could handle her drinks well from her biotics. She'd rather not leave tipsy. "So... Mr Vidal. What's your story?" she asks as she crosses her legs on the chair.
"Nothing much to say, Ryder. You might get to know me more with time, I can't give all my secrets away." He winks at her.
She rolls her eyes at him. "Well, what does Shena mean?" Reyes narrows his perfectly trimmed eyebrows at her, gosh he was perfect she thought to herself.
"It's the Angaran word for... mouth," he simply explains. Ryder chuckles at him, downing her drink. "It means I'm good with words," he adds.
"Amongst other things?" she asks with a smirk.
His voice almost turns husky, "never had a complaint," he whispers. Ryder physically shivers at him. This man could shoot her in the damn leg and she'd still want to run back to him.
"I can only assume," she says just as quietly. Reyes almost grunts at her, it seemed he was expecting her to turn him down.
"You're welcome to find out," he says. Ryder drops her cup, now completely stuck for words. Reyes laughs at her, bending down to get her cup and place it on the table. "I've broken the Pathfinder," he laughs.
"Shut it, Vidal," she shouts as her cheeks go warm red. "So, the dead body. What are we doing about it?"
Reyes sits back, seeing the flirting has stopped. "There is a Krogan who lives in the badlands, rumor has it he was murdered by our same murders of the others. I need that fancy AI of yours to go scan the area and find any clues." Ryder almost feels offended.
"For one he has a name and two, you are just using me for SAM?" Reyes shakes his head.
"No, SAM is my main need for this. You, Ryder, are just a plus," he huskily says. Ryder raises her brows but goes to stand up.
"Fine, I'll head out now, will call you when I've found anything," she says as she turns to leave.
"Qué mujer," Reyes whispers as she gets to the door. Ryder did actually speak Spanish and knew exactly what he said. She decided to not let him know just yet that she spoke it and just left. She had a new sense of excitement when with Reyes. Yes, she had a translator that could tell her what Reyes was saying, but she was yet to actually need it. Knowing he spoke Spanish and was Latino, was all she knew about him. She was determined to find out more.
A/N: Qué Mujer means: What a woman in Spanish. Reyes thinks he is so slick!
