Chapter 30: In the name of the brother
After what seemed like hours, but was just seconds, all hell broke loose. The siren of the sheriff's car could be heard approaching. Belle and Gold were still looking over Rose who was confused. She went to stand up but used her injured arm and winced. Gold saw it and used his magic to heal the bullet wound. Rose looked from the purple glow to the man with eyes opened wide.
"Amazing. How did you do that?" She whispered and then looked at the two in confusion. "Who are you? Where am I? And why was I shot?"
Belle and Gold could clearly see that Rose didn't remember them or what just happened. Did crossing the town line made all her memories disappear? Then Emma, Mary-Margaret and David arrived. Emma quickly called for an ambulance seeing that one of the injured was Rose. David and Mary-Margaret went to check on her, while Emma went to see Hook.
"Rose, are you okay?" He turned to Belle and Gold. "What happened?"
They told him what happened and David frowned. It seemed that any progress with Rose's memories was now void. They heard Hook yell, and they turned their attention to him.
"His one true love, gone in an instant! Just like Milah, crocodile! When you took her from me"
Gold was furious, and he approached the pirate ready to kill him. He not only had hurt Rose, he made her lose the few new memories they had made. David wanted to intervene, but he had mix feelings about the situation. On one hand, as a good person, he couldn't let Gold kill the man. On the other, that man had hurt his sister and made her lose her memories once again.
"I don't like Hook either. But we can't let him do this." Said Mary-Margaret looking from her husband to her sister.
Rose was looking at the scene with wide eyes. She didn't know what was going on. Belle and Mary-Margaret tried to reassure her that everything would be fine, but between the shot, the loss of memories, seeing magic and that the man that had saved her was trying to kill someone, Rose was starting to go into shock.
David and Emma were trying to stop Gold, but nothing they said seemed to work. He was too far gone. He had seen his true love being shot and lose her memories. He wasn't going to let the pirate get away with that. The ambulance arrived, and it distracted Gold long enough for David to get him off Hook.
Emma directed the paramedics to the car, the driver was still inside. Mary-Margaret left Rose with Belle and approached Emma and David. Once the paramedics came to Rose, Belle turned to Gold.
"You should go with her. I follow in the car."
"No." He said shaking his head. "Her sister will go with her. I need to calm down."
They went to Gold's car and started to drive towards the hospital, not before Belle informed Mary-Margaret about it.
Once at the hospital, Hook and the driver were sent to get checked up and Rose was taken to a room. Emma told one of the nurses to hide Hook. She didn't want Gold to get his hands on him. She had questions.
When Gold and Belle arrived, the man panicked not seeing Rose. Everyone started arguing, until Dr. Whale appeared and reassured Gold that Rose was in good hands. Everyone asked were Rose's room was and one of the nurses told them. Everyone wanted to go, but Dr. Whale said that for the moment very few people would be allowed to see her. Belle and Ruby looked at each other and nodded.
"Go, Rumpel." Said Belle with a soft smile.
Ruby smiled too and held Leroy when he was about to protest. Gold looked from Belle to Mary-Margaret, who nodded in agreement. She wanted to see her sister, but she understood how true love worked.
Gold found Rose in one of the ER's beds and watched her sleep. He had been able to break the sleeping curse with a true love's kiss, maybe he could do the same now. He leaned in and kissed her, but once Rose opened her eyes, he knew that she didn't recognize him. And it was confirmed when her fist hit him in the nose once again.
"What are you doing?" She said with a mix of fear and confusion.
Gold apologized and left, holding a handkerchief to his slightly bleeding nose. In another part of the hospital, Emma was sitting on Hook's bed. Once he woke up, she asked him about Cora. He ignored the question and started to flirt with her.
"You're awfully chipper for a guy who just failed to kill his enemy, then got hit by a car." Said Emma.
Then Hook said that he still did damage to Gold, and Emma frowned. He had hurt her friend. Hook told her how Rose was where Gold kept his heart, and that he knew the feeling of losing the one you love. Emma leaned in and smiled.
"Keep smiling, buddy. You're chained down, he's on his feet, immortal, has magic, and you hurt his girl." She put her hand on his broken ribs and applied pressure, making him groan in pain. "Who happens to be my best friend and apparently aunt. If I were to pick dead guy of the year? I'd pick you."
She left him there and joined the rest in the lobby. They discussed what to do with the driver, Greg Mendell. Emma said that he was probably going to leave the next day, but Dr. Whale entered at that moment and informed them that his injuries were more severe than that. Gold came down the stairs still dabbing at his nose and the doctor asked him to fix Greg, but he refused.
"I owe you nothing, Whale. I owe none of you anything. And some of you, owe me. So, yeah, just, no. Oh, and point of interest. The driver? He saw me throwing some magic. So, instead of trying to get him out of here, you better be hoping he dies. Because if he doesn't, he's going to be driving tour buses up and down main street. So glad I don't give a damn."
After his angry speech, he exited the hospital. Emma looked after him, knowing that his bleeding nose was Rose's doing. Dr. Whale turned to the rest and told them that he just could do nothing and let Greg die. They decided to discuss it somewhere private. After some arguing, they decided to save the driver. Dr. Whale went to prepare for the surgery.
"Anyone else notice he's drunk off his ass?" Said Mary-Margaret with a frown.
"Yes." Said Ruby. "I could smell the alcohol from a 100 miles away. I'm just glad that Rose doesn't need surgery."
Everyone else nodded.
At the pawn shop, Gold was in the back room looking at the firebird figurine, with a hand to his still throbbing nose. He could easily take care of it with magic, but he had never healed any injuries that Rose had given him. He had always got them for a reason, and them healing on their own was a way to remember the reason and try not to repeat his mistakes.
He heard a noise coming from the front of the store and when he came out, he saw a box on the counter. He approached it and a voice came from behind him.
"Hello, Rumpel." Greeted Cora.
Cora said that what was inside the box was a peace offering. Something that would help him find the only person that could still love him. He scoffed and asked her if she had something to bring memories back. Cora chuckled and shook her head.
"I see that our dear Rose still has a violent streak." She said approaching him and touching his nose slightly.
Gold took a step back, trying to get some distance between him and Cora. She brought down her hand and told him that she didn't know how to bring her memories back. She told him that her gift could help him find his son. He opened the box and saw a white globe. He knew exactly what it was. The deal was that Gold got the globe and Cora would have free-range to find Regina.
After thinking about it for a moment, Gold decided to accept. He knew that this would turn on him somehow, but at the moment, with Rose lost to him, he was desperate. He put his hand out to seal the deal, but Cora chuckled and shook her head.
"Let's seal it like we used to." She said kissing him.
Gold looked at her with blank eyes. Internally, he was furious, but he knew that doing anything now would be too dangerous. He didn't know Cora's plans, and he couldn't risk her going after Rose. He knew she would take any excuse to finish her off.
Back at the hospital, Gold was next to Rose's bed again. This time he had brought the figurine, to see if Rose could remember anything by it.
"I know you don't remember, but just indulge me. Please. Be careful with it."
Rose grabbed it and inspected it. She had to admit it was a beautifully made glass figurine of a bird on fire.
"It's beautiful, but I don't' think I remember it." She said handing it back.
Gold shook his head and asked her to concentrate on it. HE tried to bring the memories back.
"You bought it for me. You gave it to me in my castle. You said that it was so I could always remember you. My little firebird."
Rose noticed the feelings in his words and wanted to remember, but the only thing she accomplished was getting a headache. She shook her head and tried to give it back.
"I'm sorry. I don't remember anything."
He told her that he had charmed it and that she just needed to look at it, let the magic do its work. Rose just shook her head again and forced him to take the figurine.
"I'm really sorry, but I can't remember anything and right now my head is killing me."Gold looked at the figurine in his hand and frowned. "I need to rest and fully recover. Sorry."
Mr. Gold nodded and left her alone. He didn't want to push her too much. He knew from experience that if she ran out of patience she would lash out. For the day, this was enough. He would try again later. He would never give up on getting his firebird back.
The next morning, Henry got down for breakfast, and all the adults looked at him with a frown and sad faces.
"You were out all night. Where were you? Granny wouldn't tell me anything. What happened?" HE asked seeing their faces.
They explained what had happened the previous night, but they left out that Rose was one of the affected. Henry got his book and told them that Dr. Frankenstein wasn't on it. Emma stopped his speech and decided to tell him about Rose.
"Okay, Henry. I need you to listen." She said turning to him. "Last night one of the people that got hurt was Rose. Before you freak out, she is okay. No major injuries. The only thing is that she crossed the town line."
"But that's not a problem, right? She can come and go like you and me." Said Henry with a frown.
"No, kid." Said David shaking his head. "It turns out that she was more affected by the curse than we knew. She didn't lose all her memories, but she doesn't remember anything from her time here in Storybrooke."
"So, she doesn't remember me?" He said with a frown, his voice breaking a little.
Before they could answer, there was a knock on the door. Emma got up to answer it, but Gold opened the door and said he wanted to cash in the favor she owed him. He told them that she was going to help him find his son. She tried to tell him that it was a bad moment, but Gold was having none of it.
"It has to be today, because every minute I'm here, is a minute closer to me killing Hook. So it's really best for all concerned if I leave, and you're going to come with me." He went to leave, but turned to look at the family. "Oh, and, um, we have a long history, and I know that you protect each other. But know this, and know it to be true. If any harm comes to Rose while I'm gone, I'm killing all of you. I'll see you at noon."
Mr. Gold left and Emma turned to the others.
"I think it's best if I go with him. He will kill Hook if he stays here." David and Mary-Margaret nodded. "Take care of Rose. Want to help me pack, kid?"
Henry nodded with a frown. That was a lot of information to process so early in the morning. He was worried about what other characters may be in Storybrooke. He was worried about his aunt, who now didn't even remember him, and he was worried about his mom. She was going on a trip with Gold, and he still didn't fully trust him. How could have everything changed so much in such little time.
