"I need Jay's help."

"Okay sweetie, can you tell me your name?"

"Avery, please, I need Jay's help."

"Who's Jay sweetie?"

"He's a policeman. He said he would help if mommy needed help."

"Do you know his last name?"

"No, I only know his star number."

"Do you mean his badge?"

"Yes. Please you need to call him."

"Okay, what is the numbers on his star?"

"51163, please hurry up, he's trying to come into our house." Avery waited but the fear was getting stronger in her little chest.

"Who's trying to get in the house? Do you know who it is?"

"Daddy, he's going to hurt her." The operator quickly used her years of service to make the call to the Detective.

"Okay, he's on his way but I will stay with you on the phone until he gets there okay honey?"

"Okay."

It was getting late, the case wasn't done and they were still out in the streets when Jay's two way lit up.

"Dispatch to 5021 George."

"Go for 5021 George." He exchanged a look of confusion with Antonio.

"I have a young girl that says she's knows you and that she needs your help, that you would help her if she needed help."

"What's her name?"

"She gave me your badge number." Jay's confusion grew, not remembering having mentioned that to anyone in the last forty-eight hours except for when he had called in the accident. "She says her name is Avery?"

"Shit. Tell her I'm on my way, send the address to my phone." An understanding flashed between Jay and his partner as his feet moved of his own accord.

"I'll catch a ride with Erin and Kev, go." Jay was in his Ram in a record time, turning the lights on and speeding towards the address dispatch had sent his way. It was about twenty minutes away from his location but he was hoping like hell that he would make it in time.

"5021 George to dispatch, you still there?" He barely waited a beat before he continued talking. "Tell me what I'm walking into." He listened as the woman relayed what Avery had told her so when he stepped out of his truck as he quickly put it in park, his feet took him up the stairs two at a time, his hand reaching for his gun, ready for anything. The higher he went the louder the voices became.

"I'm not going to let you fill our daughter's head with these lies about me." The voice was male and it was angry. He made it to the door in seconds, raising his gun as the man tried to push his way past Kim but she stood her ground. Their eyes locked and his left hand grabbed the man from behind by his shirt and slammed him into the wall on his right.

"This isn't fifty feet." Jay growled in his ear, his gun in the middle of his back, his other hand twisting his arm to be able to cuff him, pulling him roughly from the wall as he holstered his gun. His eyes found Kim's scared ones for a second as he walked her ex out of the apartment, his backup on patrol showing up just in time. "This is an intelligence case." He handed him over to them.

"Kim, are you okay?" He took a step in her direction but her eyes flashed with fear and her head whipped back towards the bedrooms.

"Avery? Avery, baby, where are you?" Jay watched her go, was mere steps behind her.

"Hey, I got her." His hand was ghosting Kim's lower back "Avery, sweetie, it's Jay." He called out to her. "It's okay to come out." They both noticed movement in the room next to hers, Kim's, his mind went to and he crouched down as she came out from behind the bed, running to Kim's legs, Kim hoisting her in her arms and holding her tight against her chest.

"It's okay baby, it's over now." She whispered, running her fingers through her hair. Jay's eyes stayed on the pair as he rose to his feet. He watched them interact together, Kim whispering comforting words in her daughter's ear and the little girl holding onto her mother like a koala, digging her heels in her thighs, her arms secured around her mother's neck.

Avery finally turned her head from her mother's neck and looked into Jay's eyes. "You came." She whispered.

"I did." He smiled at her softly. "You were really brave calling 911 like that."

"Mommy said that if I was in trouble that I had to call those three numbers."

"Your mom did the right thing." Jay followed them as Kim walked them towards the kitchen table. "And mom says you're a genius too." He exchanged a smile with Kim this time. "You have a very good memory." He held his badge that was around his neck up.

"How did she manage to ask for you?"

"Dispatch said she gave my name and gave my badge number."

"How did you get his badge number baby?"

"I saw it at the hospital." Jay chuckled, remembering that she had played with it when they sat on the bed.

"I'm happy that you did." He placed a hand on her back to be able to reassure himself that she was really doing okay.

"What's going to happen now?" Kim asked as Avery snuggled more into her.

"Patrol took him to the district. We'll ask him some questions." He watched Kim sway in the chair to rock Avery while he spoke. "He'll probably try to alibi himself from being anywhere close to your car."

"And what about the restraining order? He violated it."

"That he won't be able to get out of, he'll at least get a fine."

"Do you need us to come in too?"

"No, I think the two of you have had enough for tonight but we'll likely have to take your statement, tomorrow maybe. Someone from the district will give you a call if we need you to come in."

"Okay, thank you again Detective, for everything." She looked into his eyes and smiled. "Sorry, Jay." She chuckled.

"I need to get going but try to get some sleep; it's been a long day for the two of you." Kim simply nodded.

"At least one of us will be able to sleep tonight." Kim watched Avery's eyes droop closed.

"You did really good tonight." He was now at her level and she smiled.

"Your eyes are green, not blue." She mumbled as her eyes closed and Jay chuckled.

"They are." He chuckled again. "Good night." He stood and ghosted his fingers against her curls. "You're raising a good little girl."

"Thanks." Jay nodded and let himself out, closing the door securely behind him.

The drive to the district had him going over different scenarios. What would have happened if he hadn't gotten to the two of them on time? What would have happened if Avery was hurt? What his heightened emotions would have made him do if Kim hadn't been there or patrol for that matter? He was quick to park in the back lot and he walked up to Platt, who he had called after talking to dispatch.

"What's the word?" He asked more roughly then intended, receiving a glare from the desk Sargent.

"It'll be done before you finish interrogating him." She gave him a knowing look. "You okay chuckles?" He couldn't help the one that escaped his lips.

"Fine, all good." He tapped the counter as she grunted her answer in disapproval. It took him mere seconds to buzz himself up and run up the stairs. "Where is he?" His gun was already out of its holster as he walked to his desk and placed it in his top drawer.

"Interview room, cuffed to the table." Erin walked to him. "Are you okay?" Jay looked down at her and nodded.

"Right as rain." He walked past her and into their side of the glass, Antonio and Voight both waiting for him.

"What happened?" Antonio stood with his arms crossed, wanting to know the turn of events after he had left him on scene.

"The ex was trying to push his way inside the victim's apartment, yelling about her putting lies in their daughter's head." He turned to look at the man sitting on the other room. "I got to him just in time."

"Platt is working on the restraining order violation." Antonio added.

"Yeah, she told me."

"Antonio and I will interrogate him." Jay turned and his jaw ticked.

"I'm good Sarge, Antonio and I got this." Jay left the room, Antonio and Voight sharing a look before Antonio followed behind. Jay decided that he would sit right behind him, close enough to see him sweat it out.

He watched them both walk in, Antonio taking a seat in front of him and Jay exactly where he said he would.

"So, what were you doing at Kim Burgess's house tonight?"

"I went there because she was in a car accident and our daughter was in the car with her." He looked between Antonio and Jay who was now leaning against his knees.

"You do know that you have a restraining order against you yeah?" Antonio leaned his arms against the table, closing the gap, boxing him in with Jay.

"The hell with a restraining order, my family was hurt and I needed to make sure they were okay." He argued, leaning towards Antonio.

"You do know what 50 feet means right?" He looked back at Jay whose leg was bouncing out of irritation.

"Yeah, I'm not dumb." He deadpanned.

"You could've fooled me."

"Why am I in here anyways?"

"Where were you yesterday?" Antonio questioned.

"I was at work all day."

"Anybody can vouch for you?" They were tag teaming each other with the questions.

"We've got security cameras."

"So you wouldn't mind us speaking to your boss then?" Antonio leaned back in his chair but Jay slipped closer to the end of the bench.

"Knock yourself out." He huffed.

"What's your angle? Owen jumped at the sound of Jay's voice. "I mean you lost your rights because you were stupid enough to leave your daughter in the car while you went into a bar but now you're ready to break a restraining order to go make sure that she's okay? I mean that's strange considering the breaks were cut. Kinda thing a mechanic would know how to do no?" Jay was trying to keep a tight leach on his emotions as he watched Owen grit his teeth.

"You care a hell of a lot about my ex and my daughter, what's your angle?" He ignored Jay's accusation.

"I'm just doing my job. A woman and child were involved, it makes my job even more important. Our lives lose meaning without them." He could see his words were cutting into Owen. "The way we treat them shows the kind of men that we are."

"I get it now." Owen smirked. "You just want to play house to my daughter? You wanna be my ex's new daddy? She's kinky like that." On a common surge of anger but a rare loss of control, Jay's hand was wrapped around Owen's neck, slamming his face to the table.

"I don't give a damn how well you covered your tracks, I'll put you behind bars for trying to kill them."

"Jay, let him go." Antonio pulled Jay's body away from Owen's who was coughing for air. It took his whole body weight to push Jay out of the interrogation room and into the one next door. "What the hell was that?" He released him roughly.

"That son of a bitch did it." His breathing was ragged. "It's there in his eyes."

"Check his alibi and kick him if it's good." Voight ordered.

"No. He did it Sarge, I know it."

"Until we have proof, there's nothing we can do about it. You're too hot Halstead, go home."

"I'm not going anywhere."

"It wasn't a request, go home." Voight took a step in Jay's direction, leaving no room for discussion.

"If anything happens to them that'll be on you." Jay was out of there so fast, grabbing his gun on the way and down towards the back lot where his truck was parked. "FUCK." He banged twice against his steering wheel. He tried to regulate his breath but nothing was working. When his phone dinged with two messages that he read in succession before putting his truck in drive, pealing out of there, only one thought in mind. "The hell with that." He took the streets as fast as he could towards his destination, parking as he watched the light turn off on the fourth floor.
