Jed paused a moment at the door to his apartment. Considering that the woman with him already knew where he lived, it didn't make sense to not let her in. When he opened the door, he had a momentary feeling of embarrassment at the state of disarray that he'd left his apartment in. He had three-day old takeout sitting out on the counter and he hadn't taken the garbage out in a week. He knew he had more of his clothes strewn about the floor and on the furniture than he had in his closet. In fact, as he walked by the couch, he discreetly kicked a pair of underwear under it to get them out of sight.
Hatsu took a glance around the room briefly before walking over to the small dining table that looked as if the only purpose it had ever been used for was as a catch all for anything that didn't make it onto the floor of the apartment.
"It's not the palace but its home," Jed said as he felt that he needed to say something in defense of his home.
"Cozy," Hatsu replied before she cleared the table before waving her hands to conjure up the plants that she'd swiped from the arboretum for her potion along with the other ingredients she had acquired in the last year. She pulled some leaves from one plant and put them in the mortar along with a root from another as well as various powders that Jed didn't know what they were and then began to grind them up with a pestle. He then watched as she picked various vials of liquid up from the table and added some of the contents to the paste that was in the mortar.
"I'm not going to be expected to drink that, am I?"
"No, the potion will have to be applied directly into the bloodstream."
Jed's head jerked up at that. "What? How?"
It was then that he noticed what looked like a ceremonial knife on the table along with the other magical elements.
"I'll have to carve the symbol of the royal crest into your hand then will apply the potion onto it. Once it mixes with your blood, it will then be activated." Hatsu finished grinding the mixture up and reached for four empty vials to put what she wouldn't need for Jadeite into them to save the remainder for the other generals as well as the prince. She then turned back to her companion to find his face had gone pale and he was staring at the dagger on the table. Seeing his apprehension, Hatsu did her best to calm his anxiety. "The pain will only last for a moment. Afterwards, you should have all of your former memories from our kingdom."
"I'm not sure about this. I mean, it was one thing to drink some vile tasting concoction but now you want to cut into me-"
"If there was another way to do this, Jadeite, I would."
Jed gave Hatsu a dirty look for calling him the name but decided to let it pass just this once. "Alright, but make it quick."
Hatsu nodded as she reached for her dagger and Jadeite's hand. She saw him grimace as her blade dug into his flesh but to his credit, he didn't vocalize his discomfort until she poured the liquid onto his hand. He then let loose a few curses that Hatsu didn't really know since profanity hadn't been among any of the lessons that he'd given her of the modern language. Still, it hadn't taken much imagination to figure out the general meaning. She held his hand tightly to allow the potion to fully mingle in with the blood that slowly seeped from the carving that she'd made.
Jadeite's hand began to glow red as he stared at the potion and his blood as they began to spill over onto the laminate floor. He furled his brows as the room around him seemed to fade into the background and was replaced by stone walls. Around him, he saw four other men whom he knew on sight as his prince as well as his friends and fellow generals. He swore he could have reached out and touched them. The room then returned to his grungy apartment, and he no longer saw his friends from another lifetime.
Suddenly, he knew that everything that Hatsu had told him was true. Hatsu: the palace oracle who had always seemed so mysterious to him. Ironically, she had seemed more normal to him in the last year when he thought that she was a crazy woman on the street than she ever had back in the palace. Jed felt a smile creep across his face at the thought.
"Well?" Hatsu asked as she saw Jadeite smile.
"I remember everything." Jed's smile then turned to a frown. "Everything. Including Beryl's attack. I have to know, did the prince survive the attack?"
"I'm afraid not. He died on the moon protecting the princess."
Jed gave a curt nod. Somehow learning of the prince's fate didn't surprise him. He had been so focused on the princess and her safety; he didn't really expect anything less.
"Alright, so what do we do now?"
"Well, we'll need to try to find the other generals in this time as well as the prince."
"And before the Benu find him," Jed added. He then thought over everything that he had heard from the oracle in the last several months before asking, "So, the other general, which one is he?"
"Nephrite. In this time, he goes by Maxfield Stanton. He's been out of the country for six years."
"Maxfield Stanton? The millionaire?"
"He does appear to have some financial influence in this time period."
"And it likely won't be all that easy to get to talk to him, either."
"We'll figure that out once he gets back to the country." Hatsu hoped that Nephrite would return to Japan soon but, in the meantime, she knew that there was no time to waste in finding the others. "First, we should be certain that the potion returned more than just your memories. Can you work any magic?"
Jed grinned at the thought of having his magic back and concentrated on his most useful, at least in his opinion, ability for everyday life. He waved his hand much in the same way Hatsu did every time he'd seen her do magic in the modern-day time and chuckled when his room instantly became neat and tidy. "Does that answer your question?"
"No wonder your place was a mess when we came in. You never even realized that you were used to cleaning up with the use of magic." Hatsu shook her head as she walked over to the newly cleaned couch and sat on it. "Hopefully, your fighting abilities have been restored as well."
"We could test them out if you're up for a bit of sparring."
"That wouldn't be a true test, Jadeite. I only learned how to use magic, not how to fight. That is why it was so important for me to find you along with the other generals. I can't protect the prince on my own."
"And if we don't find the others?" Jed asked as he joined his companion on the couch. "I won't be able to fight against the Benu alone, either. I think it would only be wise if you knew how to handle yourself in case you end up in a fight."
Hatsu glared at the younger man. How had she gone from being the mentor to the student?
Rei looked around the temple in dismay as she saw the evidence of her grandfather's latest money-making ploy. She saw where banners that advertised that the temple was protected by the Sailor Scouts themselves were hung and even saw where her grandfather had set up a calendar to mark each of the times (that he knew of) that monsters had attacked the temple as well as the Scouts appearances to defend the temple goers.
"Grandpa!"
Rei went in search of her grandfather and found him selling charms that had the ancient symbols of each of the planets on them. She saw that he was wearing one that had the symbol for Mars around his neck on a chain.
"That's right," the pudgy man could be heard telling the eager customers. "I saw the Sailor Scouts fighting a monster just over that hill over there. And that was just one time that they have come to see to it that this temple hasn't been desecrated."
"Grandpa, can I speak with you in private?"
The old man smiled brightly at his granddaughter with pride before answering, "But of course."
Once away from the bustling market area of the temple, Rei turned toward her grandfather and clearly demonstrated just how upset she was with her grandfather's decision to use the Sailor Scouts' connection to the temple to make money.
"Grandpa, you can't sell Sailor Scout charms! You aren't supposed to let on that you know who the Scouts are, at all! Have you lost your mind?"
"I just wanted to show everyone that this temple is special. And the reason it's special is because you are here. I just wish I could do more to show you just how much I'm proud of you."
"Oh, Grandpa," Rei softened a bit as she hugged her grandfather. "But you can't let anyone suspect that you know any of the Scouts. If the wrong person learned who I or the others are, you could be in real danger. I don't know what I'd do without you."
"I don't know what I'd do without you either, Rei." The old priest's shoulder slumped before continuing, "If you want me to end the sale, I will."
"Thank you. Now I have to go straighten up. The others will be coming out this afternoon."
"Don't worry, I'll stop," Grandpa Hino said as he watched his granddaughter return inside. Once she was out of earshot he added, "Just as soon as the ones I have set out, sell."
He then turned back to his customers and quickly sold the remaining charms that he had on display.
Lita sat down at the small, low table and grabbed her teacup before taking a sip of the warm drink. Winter was coming to an end, but it was getting one last snowstorm in for the road. It made her glad that there hadn't been any evil activity since the Shadows were destroyed earlier in the season. Those sailor outfits weren't very warm at all. Once the last of her friends that she expected arrived, Lita asked what the meeting was called for.
"Don't ask me, Darien called it," Rei said with a shrug.
"Darien?" The other three women in the room asked in confusion. Darien was always a loner when it came to fighting the forces of darkness. He came to their aid when they needed it, but he rarely asked for their help in return. For him to call them in for a meeting like this was a first.
"Well, where is he?" Mina asked as she looked down at her watch.
"I'm here," Darien said from the door as he removed his shoes before entering the private room that he had only been to a few times over the course of his time of fighting alongside the girls. Women, he corrected himself. These were no longer the teenaged girls that he had first met years ago.
"So, what's up?" Lita asked as she moved over to make more room around the table.
"I wanted to ask, have any of you had any indications that there is... something... some new enemy out there?"
"A new enemy?" Ami asked in concern. "Why would you think that there's a new enemy?"
Darien took his time to try to find the right words to explain his concern. "I've had a few strange dreams lately."
"Dreams? Of the Scouts?" Rei asked since she hadn't seen anything when she did her usual fire readings.
"No. I don't know who they are. I can't remember seeing them before."
"Can you describe them? Who did you see in your dreams?" Ami asked curiously.
"Well, there is one woman that feels like I should know who she is, but I don't. It looks like I might have known her back during the Silver Millennium."
"A woman? An old girlfriend, maybe?" Mina asked. Why not, right? Especially since they now knew that Serena had someone back on the Moon before she met Darien.
"I don't think so. It doesn't feel like that at all. Then there are the others."
"Others?"
"For one, I remember seeing the generals here in Tokyo. There were these... creatures." Darien looked out of the window as he tried to recall just how the beings had looked. "They resembled giant birds. The generals were fighting them."
"The generals?" Rei furled her brows before referring to the men that she and the others had met from the alternate universe that the Shadow Scouts had come from. "I guess it is possible that the generals from the Light Kingdom return to help us again."
"Maybe." Darien had considered the same possibility at first but to him, the men in his visions had seemed more personable. They felt... They felt as if he'd known them for lifetimes before now. He hadn't felt that same connection with their allies from the other dimension.
Luna twitched her tail as she listened to Darien's concerns. She felt that if he was worried about a new enemy, there very well was likely one in town. That made her worried for a few reasons. One, each new enemy that they've come across always seem to be stronger than the previous one. Two, they no longer had Serena as Sailor Moon to help fight. Three, they no longer had the Silver Crystal to help turn the tide, either. The feline wasn't sure if the Scouts were ready to fight against an enemy without Serena just yet. Nor was she sure that the young woman was ready to watch not only the girls but her husband, Kyle, head off to fight without being able to join them and help.
"Should we call Serena and Kyle then to tell them that we need them to return to Tokyo?" Lita asked, since even though she really wanted to see her newly married friends again, she would rather it not be under such dire circumstances.
"No," Darien shook his head. "We don't know for sure that there really is anything to be worried about. Even if these dreams are warnings of the future, we have no idea just how far out they take place. It could be a year or more before we see those winged things around here."
"Great, more waiting for monsters to attack," Rei groaned. "Well, now that I know what to look for, I'll try to do readings for them, too. That way we'll have some warnings before they strike."
"That's a good idea, Rei," Artemis said from his place beside Luna. "In the meantime, everyone stay alert."
