Paige awoke, a beam of light shining through an opening in the curtains. She was in her room back at the Prince Mansion. She didn't dare to move, her body was aching all over. She felt the stinging of tears in her eyes. Trying to stay calm but the burning feeling of pain in her chest got worse. After her mother had taken Paige, they had locked her up in the house, cursing her; doing spells on her. Her mother had said that she was never leaving this house again.
She was surprised that she hadn't gone insane yet, counting how heavily she had been under the cruciatus curse. They were also messing with her mind.. Going into her memories, trying to weaken the connection she had with Harry.
Placing her hand on her heart, she felt how weak the connection had truly become. She sometimes dreamed about Harry, but he was always so far away, yelling something to her but she was too far away to hear him.
A knock emerged from her door. Paige didn't answer, she closed her eyes again. Her head felt like it was splitting in two.
The door slowly opened. 'Paige?' A soft voice said, the man closed the door behind him and walked towards Paige. 'Honey?' It was her father, Bill.
He kneeled next to her bed. She still had her eyes shut. 'Honey, how are you feeling?' He asked, stroking her hair softly.
'Like you care.' Paige mumbled wanting to turn away but her body didn't let her.
'Paige… I wanted to give you something.'
Paige opened her eyes, seeing a badge. With a lot of effort she sat up. Taking the badge out of her father's hand. 'You are having a hard summer, so.. I thought maybe this would cheer you up!'' Bill said.
'Yeah, just this summer is hard..' Paige said sarcastically, as she looked at the badge.. 'Gryffindor Quidditch Captain.' She read, looking amazed. 'You were Captain of the Gryffindor quidditch team?' Paige looked at her father. He nodded.
'You were in Gryffindor?' Paige asked, still looking at her Father. He nodded again looking slightly proud of himself.
Paige let out a laugh but stopped when a terrible pain ran through her stomach. 'You?' She managed to say. 'You don't belong in Gryffindor. It's the house of bravery. You are not brave, not even close.'
Her father's proud face disappeared in seconds, he opened his mouth to speak but nothing came out. If Paige wasn't mistaken she saw tears swelling up in his eyes. He looked ashamed of himself, avoiding his daughter's gaze.
'I… know.' He then mumbled. 'I know now that's not where I belonged. If I did, I wouldn't have let Ashley hurt you like that.'
Paige felt angry yet sad, looking at her father she now saw how old he looked. His hair was getting gray, he had bags under his eyes. He looked so tired, she never noticed it before.
'Paige, I'm so sorry.' He mumbled standing up. Paige wanted to give the badge back but he didn't take it. 'Keep it, to remind you that you have Gryffindor's blood in you.' He said, making his way to her door. 'Rest, honey. You are going to need it.' He closed the door behind him, leaving her alone in her room with the badge in her hand.
She laid back in her bed. Looking at the badge, another knock on the door. This time Paige looked up and said. 'Come in.'
A blond boy walked in with a food tray, Paige raised an eyebrow. 'Draco?'
'Yes?' Draco said, placing her breakfast on the bed. 'You need to eat something…' He looked at her puzzling face. 'What? Would you rather have your mother give it to you?'
Paige didn't say anything. She took a sip from the pumpkin juice. She glanced at Draco, who looked a bit ill.
'You okay?' Paige muttered in her glass.
Draco looked at her in some kind of amazement. 'Like you care-'
Paige caught him off. 'Shut up, of course I care, I always care!' She said louder, putting her glass down. 'You're my best friend.' She mumbled the last part. Paige grabbed some toast, took a small bite but felt too nauseous to eat more.
Draco looked embarrassed. 'I'm fine.' He whispered but it felt like he was trying to convince himself more than telling Paige. He looked at Paige, his eyes going up and down. 'You?'
'Never better.' Paige said, trying to sit up more but instead let out a painful moan. Draco couldn't help but chuckle.
'You never looked better.' He said mockingly.
'Ouch Draco, that hurts me deeply.' Paige said and it almost felt like nothing changed. Like her friendship with Draco was the same, even though she knew it wasn't.
The laughter died and it became quiet again.
'It's way too dark in here.' Draco suddenly said and walked towards the curtains. He opened them with quite some force.
Paige closed her eyes as the light felt too bright for her eyes to handle, 'Please close it a bit, will you?' She asked.
Draco apologized and closed again, leaving a ray of light.
'Thanks.'
'I should go…' Draco said and walked to the door. Before he closed the door he said, 'Eat, you'll need it.' And he closed the door leaving Paige all alone again.
'Why do they keep saying that?' Paige looked at her food but wasn't hungry. She laid back down, put her blanket over her head and fell back asleep.
Paige was standing in a hallway; she could see Harry on the other side. He smiled at her, stretched out his arm, like he was trying to reach for her.
Paige took a step towards Harry and another step and another; but noticed that she wasn't getting any closer. It felt like he was getting further away. Suddenly she felt a presence behind her. She turned around looking Lord Voldemort right in the eyes. He smirked and pointed his wand at her and walked closer.
Paige walked back but stumbled over her own feet and fell down. She still tried to move away from him.
His cold voice echoed through her head. 'Imperious.'
Paige felt her body move without doing anything. She stood up and turned back to Harry who now stood inches from her. She suddenly had her wand in her hand, she pointed it at Harry.
Harry mouthed 'I love you.' But she didn't hear him.
In her mind she just heard.
Do it,
Say the words.
'avada kedavra!' Paige could hear herself say.
'NO!' Paige awoke, her body was sweating. Her heart was pounding hard in her chest. Her breathing was fast and uneven. She placed her hand on her chest again, trying to get calm. The connection… it has never been this weak..
With much effort she sat at the edge of her bed. Head down she could feel sweat dripping down her face on her pajama shorts.
She carefully got up her feet and opened one of her windows. She stuck her head out, feeling a soft wind blowing over her. She could hear children play outside, enjoying their summer vacation. They had no worries, just fun.
Paige sighed heavily. Closing her eyes, trying to clear her mind.
That dream was horrible, she killed-
She didn't dare think about it, she just felt hopeless.
Her door opened again, Paige rolled her eyes, looking to see who it was.
It was her father again and he definitely didn't look happy.
'Your mother wishes to speak with you.' He said opening the door wide with a gesture that she had to go down stairs.
Paige left her window and walked through the door and down the stairs. When she came into the diner room her mother was sitting at the table with none other than Lord Voldemort. Panic fell over her, frozen in place, she didn't dare to move. His presence made the whole room cold as ice, she was in great danger.
'Sit down, sweetheart.' Her mother Ashley said, pointing at the chair opposite of her and Voldemort.
With a lot of willpower Paige got her legs to move, without a word she sat down not daring to look at either of the two. Her heart pounding, her head racing.. What was he going to do to her, why was he here?
'Lord Voldemort, is going to give you one last chance, child.' Her mother said, smiling almost kindly.
She looked excited at Voldemort before continuing. 'He has a special assignment for you, for when you get back to Hogwarts.'
'I'm going back to Hogwarts?!' Paige asked looking up, then quickly looked back down not wanting to meet Voldemort's eyes.
'Yes of course, my child.' The cold voice of Voldemort spoke. 'We can make good use of you.' Paige heard him standing up from his chair. Walking slowly towards her, placing himself behind her.
'You see, last year at the ministry we didn't get what I wanted.. Needed..' He lowered himself to Paige her level. It was impossible to avoid his eyes. She could feel herself shaking, trying not to show it. Their eyes locked… Red eyes.. empty eyes were staring at her. She was holding her breath. 'I needed the prophecy, child.' He continued not breaking eye contact. 'And it is very important that I get my hand on it. I need to know what it said… Now we all know the prophecy itself is broken and can not be read. But Harry knows what the prophecy has said.. now this is the part where you will come in handy.' He stood up again, giving Paige room the breath again.. Her heart still pounding. 'And you are almost ready to do so, you see we have been busy, trying to weaken your connection with Harry. We don't want him to find out our plan with you because he can.. feel you.' Voldemort went on sounding disgusted with the last part.
'Isn't great, sweetheart?' She heard her mother say. Paige looked up in her eyes. 'You just have to get the information about the prophecy out of him and then tell us.'
'Well, Ashley, she could also keep an eye on whatever they are planning. I know Dumbledore is up to something with him… And Paige you can be our little spy.' Voldemort added, placing himself in his chair again.
Paige sat there still frozen, looking at her mother who was nodding in agreement. 'Well, Paige? Do this and you will be rewarded, you can become part of the death eaters and finally make me proud.'
Paige managed to slowly talk. 'So if I do this, I will be able to go back to Hogwarts, finish the year?' She asked, she had to make sure. If she went back to Hogwarts she would have a chance to get away from here, but she would have to break the connection with Harry. Could they ever get the connection back or would it be lost forever.
'Yes darling, you can then finish the year and even go to your seventh year.' Ashley said, sounding impatient. Paige felt lost, she should do this. Even losing the connection, she would have a chance to get it back at Hogwarts.
'What if I don't?' Paige asked softly.
'Then what is the use for you?' Her mother stated coldly.
Got it, Paige thought. They would kill her.
'How would you know I tell the truth?'
'You will return here on the holidays, we will have something to drink and I think you then won't be able to lie.' Her mother explained.
Right, Paige understood that too. No way out with lying. Then she would have to make Harry not tell her anything.
'Okay, I will do the assignment… and break the connection to Harry.' She finally said. There was no other way. She felt her heart dropping, a feeling of despair. She was going to break the connection that she had with Harry. The warm feeling, the loving feeling, the feeling of knowing.
'Great to hear, honey!' Her mother jumped up and walked to Paige. 'And we can finish up our little break the connection spell.' Ashley grabbed her by her upper arm pulling her up.
'Lets do this.' Her mother said excitedly, Paige hadn't seen so much excitement in her mothers eyes in years. Ashley started to guide her into another room. A few other death eaters when present. They were wearing their masks and cloaks.
When her mother pulled her inside she placed Paige in the middle of the circle that the death eaters had made. Paige looked around the room. It was dark and cold, candles were the only source of light in the room. Ashley took place completing the circle and took out her wand. 'Let's start.' She said and the other death eaters pulled out their wands as well and started to cite their incantation. 'Once we are in your head, we will begin shutting it down' Her mother said, as she pointed her wand at Paige. 'You just have to accept us in your head.'
Paige hesitated for a moment but eventually nodded, feeling like her heart was pounding so fast it would jump out of her chest.
The moment Paige got hit by the charm, she felt herself fall inside of her memories. She saw Harry and herself talk, laugh, kiss. The warmth feeling intensified, Harry was looking directly at her.. They were in the hallway again. The one she dreams about a lot. Harry was smiling at her, reaching towards her. He was closer than he has been in weeks. Paige wanted to walk towards him but got stopped. She saw her mother… She was looking at her daughter. Paige knew what she had to do.. She closed her eyes… Blocking herself off from Harry. When she opened her eyes she still saw him, he looked like he was in pain, still reaching for her. She reached for him but his hand became dust. She placed her hand on her chest, falling to her knees. It was the worst feeling she had ever felt. Light leaving her body.
She was back at the manion, sliding to the ground, sobbing. It was gone, the connection had completely died out. Nothing was left…
'Excellent.' Ashley said, walking towards her devastated daughter. 'Bring her to her room.'
Paige felt soft arms picking her put, it was her father. Paige kept on sobbing as her father took her upstairs to her room. He laid her on her bed, placing himself next to her on the bed. 'I'm so sorry.' He muttered, 'I think you made the right choice.' He stood up and walked out of her room, closing the door behind him. Leaving his daughter laying on her bed, in great sorrow.
How could she have done this, break the connection. What was she thinking? No, she had no other choice.. This was the only way.
On her nightstand she saw the quidditch badge of her father.. She too would not have belonged in Gryffindor. She was still a coward, she was not fighting hard enough..
Had Harry felt the connection die out, what would he have been thinking?
And worst of all Paige was going to see him at school, talk to him, get the information Voldemort needed. She buried her face in her pillow. Was she going to betray him?
Her body still aching, still hurt from all the torture. She felt like her spirit was broken and falling apart slowly.
Paige turned around and lay on her back looking at the ceiling. She felt tears rolling into her brown hair. Paige tried to sleep but her mind was racing the whole night.
When the morning came she was still thinking..
Their connection... Dumbledore said it last year. Harry and Paige had a connection because something had happened at the exact same time.. What happened?
They knew what happened to Harry, his parents were killed by Voldemort. and he became the boy who lived.
Paige thought hard. What happened on the 31st of October? Did someone die that she loved… someone she didn't remember.
Paige sat up, letting out a muffled groan.
'Maybe Dad knows.' She mumbled getting out of her bed and opening her door.
She looked in the hallway, nobody was there. Paige walked up the hallway and knocked on the third door on the right. No answer.
'Dad?' Paige asked, knocking again. Still no answer. She slowly opened the door and walked in. The room was messy unlike the rest of the house. Parchment everywhere, old posters from quidditch teams and music bands. Books spread over the floor. History of magic, Pureblood family-tree, an old book of D.A.D.A. Paige closed the door behind her and looked around the room better. A high amount of dust was collected throughout the years.
She looked at some pictures that were hanging on the wall. It was the Gryffindor quidditch team. Her father was standing on the right. He smirked widely; the badge was visible on his chest. He looked proud, happy. Paige looked around again and saw an old bookcase.
She moved carefully towards it and looked. Many books were covered in dust except for one.
Paige took it out and looked at the cover.
'Quidditch through the years.' Paige mumbled with a smile. 'You were a big fan weren't you dad.' She said to herself and opened the book. A picture fell out onto the ground.
Paige closed the book and bent over to pick up the photo. Paige saw her father with a woman holding a baby. They were smiling at each other, and looked at the lovely baby.
The woman had raven hair and blue eyes just like the baby did. She was a pretty woman, her long heart shaped face shining with pride. Her father looked happy, something she hadn't seen often.
Paige looked at the baby again; it was a newborn, guessed Paige. The baby yawned, holding in the tiny little hands a finger of her father.
Paige turned the photo, to look at the back.
10th of April 1980. Was written on the back.
7 days after Paige was born. She looked at the woman again, was she the baby? But that wasn't her mother..
She placed the quidditch book back in his place but kept the photo in her hands. Who was that woman? And why was she in this picture with her father?
Paige was shocked when the door opened, she quickly put the picture in her pocket. Her father looked up in surprise that his daughter was standing in his office.
'Paige, what are you doing here?' He asked, closing the door behind him.
Paige stepped over a pile of books towards her father, away from the bookcase.
'I wanted to ask you something.' Paige produced an innocent smile.
'Ask.' He said sitting down in his chair. He smiled, apparently enjoying this time with his daughter.
'Did something happen on 31st of October 1981?' Paige asked, not feeling like beating around the bush.
The smile on her father's face disappeared. He seemed almost lost for words for a moment.
Standing up he walked to his daughter placing his hands on her shoulders. 'Nothing happened.' He said with the saddest smile. She could see tears in his eyes as he let go of her.
Paige didn't say anything. She felt like her father would burst into tears if she kept asking.
She could feel the picture in her pocket. Confronting him with that would destroy him probably, Paige thought. Remembering how happy he looked in the picture.
'Okay dad, I just wanted to make sure.' She said leaving her father alone in his room.
She walked back to her room, she heard a voice from downstairs.
Mrs. Malfoy sounded stressed. 'He is only a boy.'
Paige heard her mother groan. 'He got his task by the lord himself. He should feel honored.'
She wondered what they were talking about, where they talking about Draco? Paige walked to her room again falling onto her bed. Her head still hurting badly.
Paige pulled the picture out of her pocket and stared at it. Staring at the woman, she smiled kindly at her. Paige got a warm feeling looking at her face for a second but it also quickly went away.
Who is that woman? Paige thought, holding the picture to her chest and closing her eyes. Who?
