In the meantime, Arizona checked her e-mail and saw Mel's résumé and several articles she published during her time in med school and residency at UNAM (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México) and was very impressed by them. Dr. López seemed very dedicated and apparently, she'd accomplished a lot of positive results on her studies and researches.
Arizona decided to give Bailey a call. If there was someone who could help at this transference bureaucracy, it might be Miranda.
"Dr. Robbins. I hope you're calling me to tell you've changed your mind about my proposal" – Bailey said.
"I'm not, Miranda. I'm sorry. I need a favor, though" – Arizona apologized.
"Two things I don't like to hear on the same sentence: "no" and "I need a favor". But, tell me, what can I do for you, Robbins?" – Bailey asked.
"Well, a good resident couldn't apply to a transference at Grey Sloan because she was stuck inside a flight that was delayed. She has a very good curriculum. Could you maybe look at it? Presbyterian and Tufts are fighting for her, but she wanted Grey Sloan from the start" – Arizona explained.
"May I ask why did she leave the application to the last day?" – Bailey asked, suspicious.
"I'm not sure. Something about her visa. She's Mexican" – Arizona said.
"I'm not in charge of residency anymore, Robbins. That's mainly on Catherine's hands. I don't know if I can help you" – Bailey justified.
"Well, can you talk to Catherine? I mean, she respects you" – Arizona asked.
"I can, but I'm not sure if it will change anything. Can you send me her application?" – Bailey asked.
"Yes, I'll send it right now. Thanks, Bailey" – Arizona exclaimed.
"A last thing: may I ask you who that is? A new affair?" – Bailey asked, mischievously.
"Bailey! Of course, not. I met her at the Conference. She is just a really good resident, that's all" – Arizona explained.
They hung up and Arizona headed to her hotel room. She wanted to rest a little bit before Maggie's dinner. Suddenly, a wave of sadness hit her. She thought about Amelia and what would it feel like seeing her tonight. What started so fast, ended up at the same speed and they couldn't blame anyone for. Well, maybe Kai for showing up that night.
Trying to shove her feelings and thoughts for Amelia down in her mind, she then thought about the weird coincidence of López and Boswell knowing each other. Actually, the weird coincidence about they being ex-girlfriends. What were the odds?
López was gorgeous as hell. Her presence could fill an entire room. Her voice was sharp, not loud, but strong. She was quite something. For sure, she was a type Arizona would gladly like to date. Once again, it seemed impossible to do so, since López lived in Oregon and Arizona was on the other side of the country. Besides, Arizona just asked Bailey to give López a spot at the residency program, here in Seattle. Maybe she should've insisted for her to choose NY. Maybe they could've known each other better and start something. Or even become close friends. In the end of the day, Arizona just felt really lonely most of the time, and fantasizing about something new happening in her life was pleasant.
A little bit before 7pm, Mel López was already downstairs waiting for Arizona. She was wearing a long-sleeve turtleneck knit grey dress, high-heel boots and a black winter coat, since the night was freezing in Seattle. Suddenly, she started to fear Arizona forgot about her. Does she really meant the invitation? Arizona was running just a few minutes late, but it was enough to make López feel weird. That feeling disappeared when the elevator's doors opened and Arizona left, looking gorgeous.
"I'm so sorry, I'm late. Took a nap in the afternoon and overslept" – Arizona explained herself.
"That's ok! Thank you again for the invitation. Again, I hope I don't intrude on your dinner" – Mel said.
"Don't be silly. It's gonna be great. Our cab is here" – Arizona started to walk out of the hotel towards the car. She couldn't help but noticing how stunning Mel was.
