Kira wasn't sure how long they were running for, desperately trying to stay one step ahead of the guards who were on their heels. They would have found their dead colleague's by now and be out for blood. There was no sneaking back into the QZ, not that night anyway. They managed to evade attention by sneaking through the sewers that led toward the city, which were thankfully free of the infected. Though, Kira doubted it would be long until they were fighting for their lives again. Once they made it through the sewers and to the outskirts of the city, Tess was turning her attention to Ellie.
"Look, what was the plan? Let's say that we deliver you to the Fireflies, what then?" Tess inquired, as the rain continued drenching them, covering their tracks.
"Marlene...she said that they have their own little quarantine zone. With doctors there, still trying to find a cure" Ellie admitted, kneeling down on the ground to catch her breath.
"Yeah, we've heard that before, huh, Tess?" Joel scoffed.
"And that...whatever happened to me is the key—" Ellie started, but Joel cut her off quickly.
"To finding a vaccine. That's what this is? It never works. Ever" Joel insisted, as Kira raised an eyebrow.
"You ever seen someone not turn from a bite before?" Kira exclaimed, as Joel shook his head.
"Even if this kid is immune, it doesn't mean shit. A miracle cure doesn't exist" Joel complained.
"Hey, fuck you, man. I didn't ask for this" Ellie complained, pushing herself to her feet.
"Me neither. Tess, what the hell are we doing here?" Joel muttered, turning to his friend.
"What if it's true? You've seen the bite, maybe this is what we've been waiting all these years for" Tess suggested, as Joel gave her a look of disbelief.
"I can't believe this...why are you talking like this kid even has a tomorrow?" Joel exclaimed, as Kira's expression darkened.
"...Tess, can you take Ellie to scout out our next move?" Kira announced, her eyes still solely on Joel.
The older woman looked to Joel for a moment, who gave a subtle nod, before she grabbed Ellie's arm and had to all but haul her away from the scene. Kira was pissed. More pissed than her sister had seen her look in a long while. Joel was a little taken aback as Kira stormed over to him, stopping just inches from his face, appearing surprisingly intimidating.
"I get it. Ellie's just cargo to you. Just another job. Another dead kid. But she is my sister. She's the only damn person I give a shit about in this world, so if I ever hear you talking about her life like it's nothing again, I swear to God, I'll stab you in the face" Kira hissed.
It took a few moments for Joel to respond, his eyes softening somewhat at hearing the protective tone in her voice. That was something he used to understand far too well.
"We're not far from the wall. We can sneak you both back in—" Joel began, but Kira was quick to cut him off.
"And then what? How long until they scan Ellie? Find out she's infected? They'll shoot her on the spot and you know it" Kira pointed out.
"At least it'll be a quick death. Quicker than what'll get her out here" Joel insisted, as Kira's jaw clenched.
"Fine. You want to go back to the QZ? Be my guest. But I'm taking my sister to the State House" Kira muttered, before turning on her heel, hearing Joel let out a long sigh.
"You won't make it" He told her, as she continued walking.
"You're probably right. Doesn't mean I'm not gonna' try" Kira called back, spotting Tess talking to Ellie in the distance.
She might have only known Tess for a few hours, but it was clear that where Joel went, she went. Maybe she would at least give Kira some bullets, a few supplies. She doubted it would help much but—
"If we cut through downtown, we can hit the State House by sunrise. This way" Joel announced, appearing by Kira's side, who frowned at him.
"We're doing this then?" Tess asked, as Joel gave a curt nod.
Kira couldn't help but wonder what had made Joel suddenly change his mind.
Kira made sure to keep Ellie close to her side as they made their way downtown, with the rain still pelting down upon them. She kept her hand close to the gun hidden in the waistband of her jeans, knowing how defenceless they were out in the open. There was no telling how many infected were watching them from the derelict buildings in the city.
"Holy moley. I guess this is what these buildings look like up close...they're so damn tall. So, what happened here?" Ellie gaped, as they neared two skyscrapers that were tilting over.
"They bombed the hell out of the surrounding areas to the quarantine zones, hoping to kill as much of the infected as possible" Tess explained.
"It worked here better than most places" Kira added, as Ellie's brow furrowed.
"Weren't you downtown with mom when everything happened?" Ellie remembered as Joel's eyes flickered to Kira's, surprised by this information.
Luckily, before Kira was forced to relive the events of the day, a horrifying cry in the distance distracted the group. Ellie gulped as Kira reached for her gun, readying herself for an attack.
"Uh, what the hell was that?" Ellie mumbled.
"Sounded pretty far away. We're safe for now" Tess replied, as Kira quirked an eyebrow.
"I think our definition of safe is very different" Kira scoffed, coming to a sudden halt when they found the road in front of them came to an end.
There was a massive crater cutting them off from the State house, and seemingly no way across. Kira's eyes darted to a nearby skyscraper, as Joel's gaze followed hers. They would have to take a detour. A pretty dangerous detour at that.
"Well, shit" Kira sighed.
Things went from bad to worse as they made their way upward in the skyscraper, finding numerous dead bodies. Fresh ones. There were active infected in the building. If that wasn't bad enough, Kira could swear she felt the skyscraper blowing in the wind. The storm outside was still raging, causing the creaking of the building to escalate. Could the whole thing crumble to the ground?
"Totally cool. Everything is totally cool" Ellie muttered to herself.
"Grab anything that might be useful" Tess suggested, picking up some nearby tape and scissors.
"Hey, look! Isn't that a chocolate bar?" Ellie exclaimed, pointing to the chocolate lying on the ground, as Kira crouched down to pick it up.
"Expired in...2004. Huh, this is literally older than you, El" Kira teased, making Ellie roll her eyes.
Her head snapped up as she heard Joel muttering under his breath as he tried and failed to open a nearby door. She had a feeling the older man had a problem with asking for help. Pushing herself to her feet, she watched him struggle for a few more seconds, before placing her hands on the door.
"I've got it" Joel grumbled.
"Oh yeah, I can see that" Kira mocked, as she gave the door a hard shove with her shoulder.
"Be my guest" Joel scoffed, taking a step back, and crossing his arms.
"Watch and learn, Smiley" Kira grinned, before raising her leg up in the air and kicking the wooden door open.
She stumbled forward a few steps, turning to find a filing cabinet had been placed in front of the door. Just as she turned to tease Joel once more, she saw a look of panic etched over his features. Suddenly, she was being thrown to the ground, her attacker screeching above her. Kira let out a scream when she saw it was a clicker, its horrible face only inches from her own. Joel shouted her name, before kicking the creature off her, just as it had been about to bite her neck. Tess jumped into action, pulling her gun out and putting two bullets into the clicker, killing it instantly.
"Holy shit..." Kira trailed off, as Ellie rushed to her sister's side, her eyes wide with panic.
"Are you okay?" Ellie cried, clutching onto her shoulder.
"I think I just had a heart attack, but yeah...I'll live" Kira gulped, pushing herself into a sitting position.
"Don't let your guard down. Ever" Joel warned, as Tess held her hand out for Kira to take.
"Thanks. Seriously, I owe you guys one" Kira exclaimed, gladly taking Tess's hand, who pulled her upright.
"Don't mention it" Joel mumbled.
"Jesus, what's wrong with its face?" Ellie asked, noticing how the creature's face appeared to have split apart.
"That's what years of infection will do to you" Tess stated.
"So, what? Are they blind?" Ellie guessed, as Kira nodded.
"They see using sound. Like bats. If you see one, you have to hide because those fucker's are fast. And strong. And without numerous headshots, almost impossible to kill" Kira explained, as the group began to walk through the corridor.
"So happy I decided to come with you guys through here" Ellie grumbled, making Kira snort.
They continued making their way through the building, but it became harder and harder as they found one side of the skyscraper had fallen apart. They found themselves at multiple dead ends, before arriving at what looked like a waiting room, finding one side of the room had crumbled apart. The rubble would give them enough leverage to reach the next floor with a boost.
"I'll see if there's a way through" Tess suggested, as Joel nodded, holding his hand out to help boost her up to the next floor.
With her strong arms, Tess was able to easily pull herself up, and did a quick scout of the floor, finding no immediate danger. She called Ellie up next, reaching her hand out to help pull her up. Ellie was a few inches shorter than Kira and couldn't reach her by herself. Kira held her hands out for Ellie to use to jump up to reach Tess's hand, who then dragged her up over the edge.
"Alright, Kira. You're up next" Tess exclaimed, reaching out for her hand.
Kira leaned up on her tiptoes, but she still wasn't tall enough to grab the woman's hand. Just as she was about to jump up, she felt hands wrap around her waist, as she was pulled back against a warm chest.
"What are you doing?!" Kira cried, realising it was Joel's arms around her, as she slapped his hands away.
"I was just...I was giving you a boost..." Joel mumbled, looking a little embarrassed as he backed away, finding a blush was creeping up Kira's cheeks.
"Copping a feel more like" Kira retorted, as Joel's jaw dropped open.
"I...I didn't...I was just tryin' to..." Joel stuttered over his words, as a smirk slowly grew on Kira's lips.
"You're so easy" Kira teased, as Joel realised she had been joking around.
"If you two are done, I'd love to get out of here today, thanks" Tess called down to them, as Kira jumped up to grab her hand, the grin still on her face.
Both women then helped to drag Joel up over the edge, as he was far heavier than them both. However, the moment that he reached the next floor up, the group heard a sound that made their blood run cold.
Clicking.
"Hide. Go, go, go" Tess ordered, as they raced into the next room to hide behind a counter.
In the next second, a clicker was entering the room, its disgusting head flicking from side to side, trying to find them in the room. Joel watched as Kira pulled a small circular device out of her pack, hearing Ellie gulp, appearing to know what her sister was planning.
"The hell is that?" Joel inquired.
"A present from the Fireflies" Kira grinned, chucking the device over the counter, toward where they could see a group of clickers.
She then grabbed what appeared to be a remote control from her pocket, pulled the antenna out, and switched it on. Joel frowned as Ellie grabbed a pair of earplugs from her pack, as her sister did the same. What were they doing?
"You're lucky I brought extra" Kira commented, handing earplugs to Tess and Joel.
"What are these for?" Tess inquired.
"To stop you from being deafened" Kira smirked, as the group rushed to put their earplugs in.
"Go time" Kira mumbled, switching the dial up on the remote control.
Even with the earplugs in, Joel couldn't help but cringe as a high-pitched sound echoed through the room, followed by pained cries from the clickers. He gaped as Kira stood up from they had been hiding, pulling a gun out of the waistband of her jeans. He jumped up to pull her back down when he saw the clickers had been sent into a frenzy by the sound. They were already blind, and now they couldn't hear either...
His eyes widened as Kira rained bullets down onto a group of six clickers, managing to get a headshot every time. Her aim was ridiculously good. When she was satisfied all the clickers were dead, she turned the remote control off, and turned to Joel with a smug expression.
"Where'd you learn to do that?" Joel asked, as they all removed their earplugs.
"She finished top of her class in military school" Ellie informed him, jumping over the counter.
"No shit" Joel scoffed.
"Then why aren't you a soldier?" Tess pushed, as Kira gave a shrug.
"I've never been very good at following orders" She stated, quickly following her sister.
"Who would have guessed" Tess teased.
"How does that thing work?" Joel questioned, as Kira went to retrieve the small device the sound had come from.
"Not a clue. All I know is it runs on batteries, so if you find any, let me know" Kira told him, as he nodded.
They soon made it to a stairwell, finding that the lower levels were blocked off by rubble, and they knew they couldn't go back without being attacked by more clickers. It seemed there was only one way to go forward. One that Kira especially hated.
"Oh, you have got to be kidding me" Kira gulped, as she watched Tess ushering to a window cleaner platform outside the stairwell window.
"Just don't look down" Tess advised, as she jumped up onto the platform, which was swaying in the wind.
"So...I think I'm gonna' find another way around..." Kira trailed off, peering out of the window, and down at the five-story drop.
"I'm sure it's not that bad" Ellie mumbled, as she went to join Tess on the platform, causing it to creak.
"What's wrong?" Joel inquired, seeing how all the colour had drained from Kira's face.
"I kind of have this thing...about heights" Kira confessed, looking as if she was about to be sick.
"Seriously?" Joel asked, appearing amused.
"It's not funny, asshole. Look, it's never been a problem before, stuck in the QZ" Kira explained.
"Look, this thing has lasted twenty years and bombings. I'm sure it can handle you" Joel insisted, as Kira sighed.
"I hate this, I hate this, I hate this" Kira muttered, under her breath, reluctantly pulling herself up onto the platform.
"So, you can deal with creatures trying to rip you to shreds, but a little drop and you panic?" Joel mocked, as Kira held up her middle finger, gripping onto the rotting rail.
"C'mon, you two" Tess called back, having already jumped across to a metal walkway leading to the next staircase.
"Oh, this is bad. This is really bad" Kira groaned, having looked down, her heart quickening at the sight.
"Shouldn't you be keeping an eye on your sister?" Joel pushed, trying to take her mind off the possibility of falling to her death.
Kira's eyes instantly darted over to where Ellie was quickly following Tess, disappearing behind the corner of the building. With a groan, Kira crawled up onto the metal walkway, feeling how the wind blew through her hair, and the rain dripped down her cheeks. Just as she neared the next staircase, her foot slipped on the walkway, and she would have gone tumbling to her death if Joel hadn't reached across to grab her waist, pulling her back against the building.
"Second time I've saved your ass today" Joel stated, as Kira let out a shaky breath.
"What, you keeping count now?" Kira murmured, continuing to sidestep to the staircase, before jumping inside the building to safety.
"Well, that was fucking horrible" Kira sighed, scrunching her eyes shut.
"So, where'd you pick up a fear of heights?" Joel couldn't help but inquire.
"I jumped out of a building when I was four" Kira admitted, before walking down the stairs to the floor below, leaving Joel taken aback.
After finally exiting the skyscraper on the ground floor, the group holed up in a hotel for the night, not wanting to push their luck during the night. It was already hard enough to see infected coming in the daylight. It was cold that night, but they didn't risk building a fire. Joel opted to go on watch first, allowing Tess to fall into a restless slumber, leaving him awake with the two siblings.
"You want some?" Ellie exclaimed, holding out the chicken sandwich that Marlene had packed for her.
"I'll pass" Joel scoffed, seeing how she had eaten half of it.
"What, you scared about catching something?" Ellie guessed.
"Or something" Joel muttered, keeping his rifle close to his side.
"Fine. Suit yourself. I'm gonna' get some sleep" Ellie stated, as Kira shrugged off Joel's jacket that she had been wearing.
"Here. Use it as a pillow" Kira suggested, as her sister smiled at her.
"Night" She yawned, wandering over to set up her bed near Tess.
"Night, El" Kira replied, bringing her knees up to her chest, already feeling the cold more.
Silence engulfed the two conscious members of the group, as Kira picked at the bar Marlene had smuggled for her. She wondered how the older woman was doing. Had she found someone to patch her up?
"She'll be fine. Marlene. Her little cult will look after her" Joel muttered, as Kira frowned, wondering how he knew what she was thinking.
"Where are you from?" Kira inquired.
"Texas" Joel admitted, bluntly.
"Ah, so you're like a cowboy, huh? What about Tess?" Kira went on.
"Detroit. It's in Michigan" Joel informed her, as Kira nodded, pursing her lips.
"So, uh, you two like a—" Kira started, but Joel cut her off.
"Pass" Joel retorted.
"Ooo, touchy. More of an un-requited thing then. You or her?" Kira pushed, as Joel's jaw clenched.
"How'd you let your little sister get bit?" Joel asked.
"What?" Kira scowled, not liking his tone.
"You're supposed to protect her, right? But I'm guessing you weren't there when she got bit? Something more important to you than her?" Joel exclaimed, as Kira realised what he was doing.
"Alright, I get it. No more personal questions. You don't have to be a dick about it" Kira muttered, rubbing at her legs.
"...We'll cut through the museum in the morning. That'll get us close to the State house" Joel told her, after a few moments.
"And then you can get us out of your hair?" Kira suggested, earning a curt nod from Joel.
"Exactly" He murmured.
"Can't wait" Kira grumbled, turning away from him and lying down on the cold ground, willing herself to fall asleep.
She was annoyed at herself when she realised, she would actually miss Joel and Tess. Since when did she get attached to people so quickly?
Going through the museum the next morning turned out to be a terrible idea. It was filled with cordyceps fungus, and bodies that had been decaying over the years. The group successfully made it to the top floor before they became separated when the doorframe they entered through crumbled. Tess and Ellie were on one side, with Joel and Kira on the other, the latter hearing Tess's cry for Ellie to run, and clicking sounds following them.
"Fuck. We need to get to them. Ellie! El!" Kira cried out, when Joel shushed her.
"We will, alright? But you need to say quiet. Can you do that?" Joel insisted, as Kira reluctantly nodded.
"C'mon, maybe if we go down a floor, we might be able to find another way up" Kira exclaimed, as they rushed off in the other direction.
"Stay close to me" Joel told her, as they both heard clicking coming from the staircase, their guns raised.
Kira groaned as she saw five clickers wandering up the staircase they had just ascended, realising they were cornered. Joel raised his gun to the nearest clicker, ready to fire when Kira held up her hand to stop him. Instead, she ushered to the ceiling where a chandelier was rocking back and forth. Before he could stop her, she had sent two bullets to the metal chain that had been holding the chandelier up and watched as it plummeted down all the way to the ground floor. It sent the clickers into a frenzy, as they all rushed down the stairs, allowing the pair to make their way down. They soon came across a staircase on the other side of the building and could hear Tess shouting from nearby. They found her wrestling a runner, managing to throw him away from her, and using a nearby piece of wood to shatter his skull.
"Shit, are you okay?" Kira cried, watching as Tess pulled up her shirt.
"I'm fine" Tess muttered, as they heard a scream from the other room.
"Guys, get in here!" Ellie shouted, as Kira was instantly racing out of the room.
She was trying to push a runner away from her, but the creature was far stronger. Kira gasped as she watched it bite Ellie's arm, but it didn't get any further than that. Kira had sent her pocket knife flying across the room, hitting the runner in the face, as it dropped to the floor, dead.
"Shit, there's more coming" Ellie panicked, as she rushed over to her sister.
"Stay behind us, El" Kira insisted, as Joel and Tess came to join her.
Over half a dozen runners were upon them in a matter of seconds, many getting past the bullets the group fired at them. Joel managed to fight off any that got too close, having pulled a hammer out of his pack, and pummelled the infected with it. Once all the runners were dealt with, Kira allowed herself to let out a sigh of relief. That had been way too close.
"C'mon, there's a window that we can use to get to the roof" Tess advised, rushing to the other side of the room, with Ellie quick on her heel.
"You good?" Joel asked, seeing that Kira appeared winded.
"Yeah, just—watch out!" She cried, seeing a clicker had snuck up on him, just inches away from his back.
Without thinking, she lunged at the creature that had been just about to bite Joel, sending it flying onto it's back. However, the clicker was far stronger than her, and almost instantly got the upper hand. It clawed at her violently, it's horrible teeth snapping at her. It hit her in the face, before shoving her onto her side, and crawling on top of her. Kira's hand reached out to grab its neck as it wailed above her, about to bite. A loud gunshot rang out in the museum, as Kira felt blood splatter across her cheeks, finding Joel had shot the clicker just in time. She pushed the creature away from her, still panting as Joel crouched beside her, a panicked expression on his face.
"Shit, did it get you?" Joel questioned, seeing there was blood pooling underneath her.
Kira grimaced as she pushed herself upright, feeling against her back to find something protruding from her skin. Looking down she found some broken glass had become embedded in her back. Luckily, it didn't appear too deep and was better than the alternative.
"I think this makes us even for earlier" Kira groaned, as Joel grabbed her shoulder and helped to haul her upright.
"C'mon, let's get out of this shithole" Joel insisted.
Once they made it to the roof, Kira was quick to check on Ellie's new bite, praying silently that it wouldn't take just like the last time. She was immune. No matter how many times she got infected, right? Kira became distracted as a wave of pain and nausea hit her, feeling how the glass in her back shifted. She needed to sort that out. Soon.
"Here. For your arm" Joel exclaimed, holding a rag up to Ellie.
"Thanks" Ellie nodded.
"You need me to...?" Kira trailed off, seeing how Ellie had already begun to bandage the wound.
"Don't worry. You taught me well" Ellie grinned, making Kira roll her eyes.
"We going over there?" Ellie guessed, seeing a plank of wood connecting them to the next building.
"Yeah, I know it looks scary but—" Joel started, but was cut off by Ellie's scoff.
"Psh. That was scary, this is wood" Ellie replied, quickly walking over the plank to the other side.
"You alright, Tess?" Kira frowned, seeing how the older woman was grimacing in pain.
"Just twisted my ankle. It's nothing" Tess shrugged, as Kira crouched down beside her, pulling some tape out of her bag.
"I'll decide that" Kira retorted, pulling the older woman's shoe and sock off, and trying to rotate her ankle.
"You a doctor or something?" Tess frowned.
"Medic" Kira confessed.
"That's what you did instead of becoming a soldier?" Joel realised, as Kira started to tape Tess's ankle, trying to keep it supported.
"Figured I'd rather save people than kill them. Thank you, by the way. For looking out for my sister. You're a pretty badass woman, Tess" Kira stated, as she finished of taping Tess's ankle.
"You're not too bad yourself" Tess replied, earning a smile from Kira.
"...You really think they can get a cure from your sister's...condition?" Tess couldn't help but ask.
"Yeah. I do. El's a special kid. She always has been" Kira told her, as Tess nodded.
"I hope so. I really do" Tess mumbled, seeming upset by something.
Before Kira could ask her what was wrong, Tess was putting her shoe back on and hopping over the wooden plank, leaving Kira with her own problem. She grabbed a medical box from her pack, pulled some scissors out and cut the hem of her shirt away so she could take a closer look at the wound.
"Here" Joel exclaimed, handing her a bottle of whiskey.
"What a waste, huh?" Kira exclaimed, pulling the top of the bottle.
"You need a hand?" Joel suggested, as Kira shook her head, grimacing in pain as she poured the alcohol over the wound.
She then pulled her shirt up higher, stopping just beneath her bra, allowing her to get a closer look at the wound. It was very close to the side of her stomach, so it wouldn't have hit any organs. She pulled at the glass lightly, glad when only a little bit of blood run down the glass.
"No arteries hit. My lucky day" Kira grumbled, as she grabbed a bandage and some gauze from her kit.
"You're really gonna' try bandaging yourself up?" Joel questioned.
"Wouldn't be the first time" Kira scoffed, trying to ignore the way her hands were shaking.
She had a good pain tolerance, but her body was starting to go into shock. Her heart was racing, causing more and more blood to spill out from the wound. Even her vision had begun to blur, as she tried to push her panic down. What if she couldn't get the bleeding to stop?
"Not my first time either. Don't be an idiot" Joel insisted, reaching out to still her hands.
"Such a charmer" Kira mumbled, but reluctantly handed him the gauze.
"Remember to pack the wound and keep—" Kira began, but Joel cut her off before she could say anymore.
"Kira. I've got this" Joel told her.
"Alright, on three, yeah?" Joel suggested, as she nodded, bracing herself for the pain.
"One..." Joel started, before suddenly pulling out the glass, causing Kira to let out a cry of pain.
Without realising it, she had reached out for his thigh, clutching onto him as pain coursed through her body. He was quick to press the gauze into the wound, trying to pack it as much as he could, as Kira scrunched her eyes shut. He could feel how her hand tightened on his thigh as he pressed harder against the wound to try to stem the bleeding, finding he didn't want to push her away.
"What happened to three, asshole?" Kira complained, shakily.
"Oh, so you can count, huh?" Joel mocked, making her snort.
"...Why'd you save me back there?" Joel inquired, as he began bandaging the wound, pulling the white cloth all the way around her waist.
"Seemed like the right thing to do" Kira stated, cringing at the pain she felt.
"And...I guess I didn't want you to die" Kira admitted, catching his brown eyes for a moment.
"Don't do it again" Joel told her, making her frown.
"What?" She queried, as he began to tape the bandage down.
"I don't need anyone else's death on my conscience" He informed her, as Kira's eyes softened a little.
"You know, a thank you would have done" Kira teased, as Joel shook his head, but she noticed how his lips twitched into a small smile.
It was then that she realised she was still holding onto his thigh, and not too lightly either. Biting her lip, she was quick to pull her hand away. Soon after, he was finished patching her up and pulled her shirt down, now not looking into her eyes.
"Are you two done flirting over there?" Ellie called over to the pair, not realising her sister had been hurt.
"I'm coming, brat" Kira retorted, with a fond smile, choosing to ignore Ellie's comment.
There was no way she was flirting with Joel. No way...right?
