Chapter 13: The Watchtower
Danny followed after the Justice League, pretending not to noticing the still-distrusting looks the older superheroes sent him.
He sighed, realizing that they still don't seem to trust him.
"Figures, even in another world, adults don't trust Danny Phantom. Whatever, I just hope this Watchtower place, wherever it is, is gonna send me home..."He thought as he walked along side Kara, who was still friendlier company.
Once they stopped, he had to ask the following question.
"So, how are we getting to this Watchtower place?..."Danny asked.
"Batman is bringing our ride..."Kara said.
Danny raised a brow, wondering what she means by a ride.
He soon got his answer when a high tech spaceship landed in front of them, with the Dark Knight in the pilot seat.
Danny was amazed and Supergirl smiled.
"I'd like to introduce you to the Javelin..."She said.
"Wow..."He said.
Sure, his parents have built their own jet, among other things, but this one looks WAY more high tech, and doesn't have his dad's face plaster over it.
Plus, he knew that if Tucker was here right now, he'd be geeking out over the high tech plane. Heck, part of Danny was geeking out too.
Soon, the door opened and it was time to go in.
"Come on..."Kara said.
Danny snapped out of his thoughts before he followed her inside. As he got in, he also had to ask another following question.
"Uh...tell me again, where is this Watchtower thing located?..."The ghost boy asked, noticing the smirk on the alien girl's face.
But why?
Later
Danny was in a mixture of awe and ecstasy in his new location.
And for a good reason too.
"I'm in space!..." He said before laughing like a happy child, practically jumping in his chair.
He still couldn't believe that this group had a space ship thing and that their Watchtower thing was up in space...which is where they are heading.
"This is so cool..."He said, still excited.
His voice echoed, getting the attention of the others as they shared expressions of either amusement or annoyance, depending on who is who.
Danny was still amazed.
He is still excited as he looked towards the window, seeing the Earth from up here and he was totally geeking out over can't help himself, the NASA fanboy and the "I-wanna-be-an-astronaut" side of him was loving this, and it didn't go unnoticed by the other heroes.
"Looks like we have a Space Fanatic among us..."The Flash chuckled to his team mates.
"No kidding..." John Stewart said with amusement.
Supergirl shook her head at this, not bothered in the slightest by his actions. She was more amused than anything.
"So, I take it that you have never been in a space ship before..."Supergirl said.
"Am I that obvious..." Danny said, still marveling.
"Not that hard to notice..."She said in a quippy tone..
Danny sent a sheepish look.
"Sorry..."He said.
Supergirl giggled.
"Don't be, it's fine..."She said... "And I guess this is your first time in space too?..."She asked.
The ghost boy shook his head.
"Well, once but I had to stop some blabbermouth from taking control of a satellite..."Danny said. "Standard tech villain who wants world domination..." He muttered.
"I see. We have a few of those here too..."Supergirl said.
"Gets boring after a while, doesn't it? Bad guy who wants world domination?..." Danny asked.
"Definitely..." Supergirl said with an eye roll and a smile.
All the while, Danny still looked excited to be here.
Sure, he knows that he might be stranded in another world, but he considered this a silver lining.
"I gotta admit, this is pretty cool..."He thought, still reveling in his surroundings. His eyes then turned to Kara, who smiled at him. "Plus..."He quickly fascinated about her in his mind as he smiled back.
Superman gave one last once over of the ghost boy. He made note of Danny's budding friendship with his cousin and that's what worried him.
"I know that Kara is a smart girl and has a good head on her shoulders. Still, we can't trust him yet. I better keep an eye on him..."He thought
Kara is a young girl and he trusts her but he did not know anything about this new guy who came from another dimension. Yes, he would give him the benefit of the doubt but that didn't mean he would be careless.
He had to keep an eye on this newcomer.
Good will or not, the man of steel still had to make sure nothing bad would come of this. Luckily, he has the league to back him up, just in case.
Though right now, it was time to calm down a bit. no need for over-excitement, unlike the ghost boy, who marveled at the sight of space.
"If the kid's freaking out this much, what will he do when he sees the Watchtower?..."Green Lantern said.
Flash chuckled and grinned in amusement.
Danny, who had still been watching out the window, overheard.
"Is the Watchtower really that amazing?..."He asked.
"Kid, most people would bribe their way in just to see the docking bay..."Flash said, still chuckling.
Before the ghost boy could ask about that, a certain amazon saw something up ahead.
"The Watchtower is coming into view..."Wonder Woman added from her seat.
Within seconds, The Watchtower was in sight. Well, at a distance to be able to see most of the details of the large, space station structure that served as the meeting and gathering place of the Justice League.
Danny was totally astounded right now as he saw the whole thing.
"Wow! This is like a space station..."He said in excitement.
"It pretty much is..."Supergirl chuckled at the ghost boy's excitement.
It was almost kind of cute how excited he was by this.
Supergirl saw this and giggled ad Batman rolled his eyes.
"Kids..." He muttered.
Kara heard that and chose to ignore him and kept talking to Danny as they soon arrived to their destination:
The Watchtower.
Inside The Watchtower
They soon went inside and Danny's eyes widened as he felt like he was dreaming as he saw the inside of the Watchtower.
"Welcome to the Watchtower, base of operations for the Justice League..."Kara announced proudly upon arriving to the ghost boy.
"Awesome..."He said in marvel.
The heroes saw his expression and couldn't help but find it amusing.
So far, the kid didn't SEEM evil or anything. The kind of look on his face was just too pure to be an evil supervillain but they were still unsure about trusting him so soon.
Still...
"If he's faking it, he's doing a convincing job..."Flash whispered.
Wonder Woman chuckled.
"I'm convinced that he's new to space, at least..."She said.
Superman, despite it all, nodded.
"That, I'll believe..."He said.
Kara heard this and ignored her adoptive cousin. She was more fixated on the young man next to her, smiling at how his reaction.
Just then, Hawkgirl appeared and landed in front of them. Danny saw her wings and said nothing, since it's not THE strangest thing he has seen all day.
"Hey, back so soon..."Hawkgirl said.
"Shayera, good to see you..."Green Lantern said.
"Likewise..." She responded.
Danny noticed the odd tone in their voices but said nothing.
"I take it you didn't need back up?..." The winged lady said hitting her mace softly against her hand.
"Back up came, just not the one we called for..."Batman said in his usual way.
Before the bird-theme hero could ask about that, Supergirl looked around for any sign of a blonde in red white and blue, who she had a bone to pick with.
"Where is Stargirl?..."The blonde heroine asked, still annoyed by their last conversation.
"She and her step dad had to go back home..."Hawkgirl said.
"Wonderful... that's less stress for me..."Kara muttered, still miffed over their last conversation.
"I guess..."Hawkgirl said, amused.
It was no secret among the league that the girl of steel and Star girl weren't on friendly terms with each other.
"Teenagers..."She said before looking to GL who was also exasperated.
"This is why I don't babysit my cousin's kids..."Green Lantern said.
Hawkgirl ignored that and noticed the new comer, sending him a hard, critical look. Danny, feeling awkward and nervous.
"Uh, hi..."He said in an unsure way.
"Who's the kid?..."Hawkgirl said.
Superman sighed.
"That's a long story..."He said.
"Supergirl found him..."Wonder Woman added
"Found him?..."The bird themed hero questioned.
"We'll explain in a bit..."Superman said, before turning to his young cousin and protege.
"Supergirl, keep an eye on your friend..."He ordered.
"Okay..." Kara said as Superman and the others went to go find J'onn and also explain the situation.
Once they left, the two teens looked to each other.
"I hope once Kal-El sees the truth, we can help Danny..."Kara thought.
"I'm getting "off limits" vibes from him whenever I'm around Supergirl. Still, it is cool to be in space..."Danny thought.
With Superman
"Another Earth?..."Hawkgirl demanded.
"Possibly..."Superman said.
He then explained what happened and what Kara told him. Once he was done, Hawkgirl still looks unsure.
"Are you sure it was a good idea to bring him here? What if he's an invader or a spy from one of our enemies? What if Cadmus made him like Long Shadow?..."Hawkgirl asked.
"That's why we are here. To see if he is telling the truth or not..."Superman said.
"Why not use Wonder Woman's truth lasso?..."Shayera asked.
They had considered that option but...
"Bad idea..." Batman spoke up.
"What makes it a bad idea?..."She asked.
"For starters, a being from another universe maybe immune to some magic in this universe or other substances..."The Dark Knight said. "Besides, Supergirl explained that he's half-human, we're not sure what the other half is, so it might not work..."He added.
The bird theme heroine saw his point.
There were SOME beings out there immune to the lasso, such as machines, spirits, certain clones or inter-dimensional entities. A certain someone named Bizzaro came to with him, the man couldn't tell the truth from a lie.
So, the lasso was not infallible.
"Alright, so what do we do?..." Shayera asked.
"We need to get J'onn. At least, he can confirm if he's telling the truth or not without potentially hurting the boy or himself..."Superman said.
Hawkgirl saw his point and nodded.
They soon left to go get a certain martian who would be able to tell him what they need to know.
Meanwhile
While the adult heroes were busy talking, Danny was left alone with Supergirl, not that he was complaining.
Still, he knew of his situation and that he had to get home ASAP.
"Trapped in another dimension, no way to know how to get home, but I am also with a hot super heroine in SPACE. It's like one of those glass half full situations..."The ghost boy thought.
Sure, Danny was worried about his friends and family, he couldn't help but be amazed at where he was.
Or who he was with.
"If it weren't for being stuck in another world, this would be really cool..." He finished his thought.
Danny can't help but glance in her direction when she's not looking.
"All things in considered, I guess I should count myself lucky that I ran into someone willing to help me out..."He thought as he looked at her.
The ghost boy couldn't hide the small blush he sported as he looked at her.
"She is beautiful and she's got some moves..."He couldn't help but think.
He realized that he was staring and then pretended to have been looking out the windows but Supergirl was more observant than he thought. She was aware when he wasn't looking and couldn't help but tease him a little.
"Like what you see?..." Supergirl asked with a light tone.
"Yeah..." Danny said in a dreamy tone.
He then realized what he said and snapped out of it, blushing deeply.
"Uh...I mean...uh..."He stammered.
"The view of space..."She said.
"Uh...yeah...that..."He said, looking embarrassed.
"It's beautiful isn't it. Almost can't look away..." She joked, clearly not fooled by how he's acting.
"Uh..." Danny blushed hard.
Kara only chuckled.
Danny tried to save some face by changing the subject.
"So, uh...how long until your cousin and the others will be back and stop thinking that I might be a bad guy?..."Danny asked.
"Soon..."Kara answered, not worried.
She might not know Danny long but she trusted her gut and her gut told her that he was sincere when he spoke to her.
Danny, on the other hand, was used to people not trusting him.
The ghost boy looked over to the blonde heroine and couldn't help but admire her a little.
Okay, a lot.
Supergirl was not like most girls he had met. Granted, most of them did know how to fight and one fought him regularly. No, she was different, and not just with the powers. She had a certain je ne se jour the boy couldn't put his finger on. It drew him in like a black hole at times.
He wanted to get to know her a little better.
Still, he tried to not stare, as he would in the past, and actually tried to be a bit more open and talk to her. Right now he was supposed to be a hero as well, not some nervous teenager who was dealing with an attractive member of the opposite gender.
"So, uh...Supergirl?..."Danny asked.
"Yeah?..."The blonde heroine said.
"Um...so..."He said.
Danny felt tongue tied and he couldn't find the right words.
"Different universe, same weak-kneed reaction..." He thought miserably.
"What is it, Danny?..."She asked.
The ghost boy stuttered as he tried to find the right words. While he had gained confidence since he became a hero, the girl of steel was a real beauty and he felt like he was back at school and everything was normal. Including his not so special social standing.
No one could blame him. Still, he tried to at least say SOMETHING to her.
"Oh... hehe... y'know... umm... thanks. For, y'know, trusting me and standing up for me..."He said, rubbing the back of his head as he did so.
Supergirl smiled at him.
"No problem..."She said, still sending that smile of hers.
Soon, the adult heroes return, with an extra person.
It was J'onn J'onzz A.K.A. the Martian Man Hunter.
At first, Danny thought he was a ghost but when his ghost sense didn't go off, he did guess that this guy must have powers or something. Kara noticed Danny tense up and spoke up.
"Danny Phantom, meet the Martian Manhunter..."Supergirl said.
Danny rubbed his eyes to make sure he wasn't seeing things.
"Uh...before I say something I might regret, is he really a martian or is it just some gimmick?..."Danny asked.
"I am from Planet Mars..."The green man admitted.
The ghost boy blinked before he found himself grinning.
"An alien?! Awesome! I always wanted to meet one!..."Danny exclaimed excitedly.
J'onn would have one eyebrow raised if he had one. Kara and Shayera laughed at that, even Superman had a small smile at hearing that.
"I suppose he's not yet aware..."He thought as the martian spoke next.
"You already have, my young friend..." J'onn said.
"Huh?..."Danny asked
"He means me and my cousin..." Kara said.
Danny looked to her with an incredulous smile.
"Are Caucasians considered aliens or something here?..."He asked.
"They are if they're from Krypton or Argo..." She stated with a shrug.
"You're really an alien?!..."He exclaimed.
"Yep..."She said.
He couldn't believe it, but then again, maybe he shouldn't be so surprised that a girl with super strength and laser vision is an alien.
Still, given the situation, Danny smiled.
"Cool..."Was all he could say.
Kara smiled at that.
Superman, feeling a bit protective, almost took a step forward before Shayera got in his path to stop him.
"Easy, Big guy..."Shayera said.
Danny then remembered this was Kara's cousin and he saw the look he sent him. He felt a weird sense of deja vu. One that reminded him of Paulina's dad when he went to take her to the dance that one time. Only this guy has super strength and can shoot lasers from his eyes.
"Great, I haven't even asked this girl out and yet I am being judged by her family already..."He thought.
"I'm an alien too, just so you know..."Shayera said, wanting to see how'd he'd react.
"You are?..."Danny asked,.
"I am a Thanagarian or did you think these wings were just glued on me?..." She asked.
"Sorry, I thought you were spliced with bird DNA or something..." Danny said with a shrug.
"Of course..." Shayera said.
In the League lifestyle, nothing is too crazy of a theory, even one like that.
"So, I was brought here in order to confirm something..."J'onn said, reminding them of his presence.
Kara blinked before remembering why they brought Danny here.
"Oh, right. Right..."She said before floating next to Danny.
"This is Danny Phantom. He's kinda from another Earth..."Kara explained.
"I see..."The Martian Manhunter said, not looking surprised at all.
Danny raised a brow.
"I guess this isn't that rare a situation for them..."He thought as the adult heroes kept talking.
"We just need you to see if he is telling the truth or not..."Wonder Woman added.
"Very well..."The martian said.
Danny raised a brow.
"So, how is this gonna work? How can he know I'm telling the truth?..."Danny asked. "Are martians living lie detectors?..."He half joked.
He got no laughs.
"In a way, yes. I suppose..."Martian Manhunter said, surprising Danny.
"Really?..."He asked.
The alien nodded.
"Martians possess a number of abilities, one of them being telepathy..."He explained.
Danny got where this was going and why he was brought to this Watchtower in the first place.
"So, you guys brought me here so he could read my mind?..."Danny stated.
"Yeah..."Kara said.
Danny wasn't sure about this. The last time someone tried to get into his mind, he ended up going on a crime spree for Freakshow and nearly killed Sam on a trapeze.
Not his finest hour.
Not to mention, there were some things that he didn't want out in the open, like his secret identity and stuff about his past...or rather...his future. That is one that he definitely doesn't want anyone to know about.
"I'm not sure how to feel about this ..."He thought.
J'onn, sensing his uneasiness, attempted to assure him.
"Rest assured I will not divulge your secrets or personal information. I will only confirm the validity of your story. If you truly are from another world and mean us no harm..."He explained.
Danny heard this and looked to the others in the room then to martian before him, looking him in the eye. He knew that this might be his only way to get these people to believe him.
He sighed.
"Just what you need to know..." Danny said seriously.
He may agree to this but there were some rules he needed to lay down.
The martian nodded.
"Very well..." J'onn said.
Focusing on the young boys mind, the martians eyes were now looking into Danny's and they began to glow.
"Whoa!..."Danny thought as he could even feel a presence in his mind.
It was similar to the time that Freakshow tried to control him but unlike that, it wasn't malicious and he wasn't being controlled or anything like that.
No, J'onn was just looking to confirm some facts.
After a few moments, J'onn's eyes stopped glowing and closed them.
Keeping to his word, he only saw what he needed to see to confirm the validity of Danny's story. He did not probe into the young man's secrets. He had a right to his privacy.
"Well?..."Superman asked, once the martian was done.
"I looked into his memories and I can safely say that this Danny Phantom is not our enemy. He is indeed a young man in need of help to return home..."Martian Manhunter said.
Kara grinned.
"Told ya..."She said smugly to her cousin.
Superman was happy to see that the newcomer isn't a threat, but that means he really IS from another dimension and is out of place in this universe, which makes this much more complicated.
As in, this kid is stranded in another world. And he has no idea how to get home.
"It looks like your story is true, which means that you are, indeed, on the wrong Earth..."The man of steel said.
Danny nodded.
"It's okay. I'm used to people not trusting me..." Danny admitted.
The others would have questioned what he meant by that, but the young ghost boy spoke up again.
"So, how exactly am I on the "wrong" Earth? I've been in alternate timelines before...one I would rather forget... but another Earth?..."Danny questioned.
"This happened to us before..." Green Lantern explained.
"As explained to us before, the universe is ever expanding.. Imagine Infinite universes, each with its own version of Earth. They all vibrate at their own frequency, so they can't see each other..."He said.
"When it happened to us, I was using my speed to deal with a robot about to go nuclear..." Flash explained.
"The energy combined with his speed vibrated us at the frequency of another world..." GL said.
"What?..."Danny said.
"He's the fastest man alive..." Hawkgirl explained
"Oh..."Danny said, before he went back to this situation.
"So, he ran fast enough to stop a nuclear explosion, I am sorry but how did that end up with you guys going to an alternate universe?..."He asked.
"It should be obvious..." Green Lantern said.
The ghost boy just sent him a flat look.
"Yeah... I'm a C student..." Danny said.
"He means that traveling at hyper speed like that and rotating can create a breach in reality..."Kara explained.
Hearing that, Danny pondered.
"Huh... I WAS going faster than usual. Sparing my backstory here, I got supercharged and spun around at like turbo speeds..."Danny brought up.
"That must have been it..." Kara pointed out.
"Did you spin in a circle?..." Green Lantern asked.
"Yes..."Danny said.
"Then that must've done it..." Flash said.
Okay, so now they knew how Danny got here. But the questions remains: How is he gonna get back home?
"So... what do I do now? Stay still until I stop vibrating?..." Danny asked.
"I am afraid it does not work like that. We needed a machine to return us to our right frequency. One that does not exist on this world..."J'onn said.
Danny did not like the sound of this.
"What?!..."He shouted.
"We didn't build the machine, someone else did..." Green Lantern said.
"We could recreate the event but for all we know, you'll end up where dinosaurs never went extinct..." Flash spoke.
"Or somewhere worse, like an Earth where everyone you know is evil or everyone you know was never born..."Kara added, knowingly Danny wondered if that had actually happened.
Danny started panting as it was getting to him.
"SO, I'M STUCK HERE?!..."He yelled.
He was stuck in a world where everyone and almost everything he knew wasn't here and even worse, his home, his family and friends are are going crazy or being attacked by ghosts without him.
This was bad.
This was really bad.
