The Ghost Boy and The Super Girl
Chapter 23: Danny's First Mission II: Superhero Team Up
Danny and Supergirl were both in the skies, heading to Metro Tower, where the mission would soon take place.
The ghost boy was sweating a bit, though it wasn't because of the heat.
"Make a good impression...you can mke a good impression...right?..."He thought, feeling a little nervous.
Supergirl noticed, and spoke up.
"You okay?..."She asked, and the ghost boy sighed.
"Well, I'm about to go on a mission with real life superheroes. I'm not used to working with other people with powers...well, I have but that was pretty much once in a blue moon back home..."Danny said, recalling Danielle and Wulf before he continued.
"I'm also worried that this might be my last mission, and not just because I might be going home soon..."Danny said, as he scratched the side of his head.
While he had experience in life threatening situations, from lab accidents to near death experiences in battle, he mostly ever handled them on his own as he was the only one with the power to do so.
Sure, Tucker, Sam and Jazz have helped him out and provided as much backup and support that they could provide but at the end of the day...he is the only one with a real chance against all the bad guys they deal with.
"I hope that they are doing okay without me..."He thought, worried.
Kara heard his words, and nodded in understanding.
"I get it. It can be scary. It happens so much, that you'd think most heroes would be concerned about their life insurance at least..."She said.
"Let me know if they ever come up with life insurance for superheroes, I might just move here if I can't ever go back to my dimension..."The ghost boy snarked.
He was joking about moving but not the insurance, looking back to his adventures proved to him that life insurance for superheroes should definitely exist. It was a hassle after all, how he and his friends both protected their home town from troublesome ghosts, while also trying to act like kids their own age.
And the fact that he was talking about it with another was a relief.
Sure, he usually talked about his issues with his friends and sister, but it felt nice talking about this kind of stuff without someone who had powers and was a teen superhero too.
It felt nice talking to someone who was basically going through the same thing that he was.
"This might be the best bit of relief that I've ever felt..."He thought, smiling.
After a few seconds of recollection and a moment to clear his head, he remembers everything about the situation he was in, as well as his first ever Justice League Mission. Yet despite that, he couldn't help but find himself regaining his excitement again, enough to go along with this.
"At least I get to make some friends...and might pick up some pointers for when I get back home..."He thought in amusement, which helped him regain his classic optimism.
Kara stared at the ghost boy with a happy expression on her face as she saw how more relaxed him seemed. However, she also knew that a part of him might still be nervous about the mission, and tried to talk about something more uplifting.
"You'll love this..."She said.
"Will I?..." Danny asked.
"Definitely. You're basically acting as our wildcard, seeing as no one has heard of you until now..."She girl said, not sugarcoating the ghost boy's position in this mission.
"Lucky me..."Danny snarked, but the blonde heroine still saw the advantage it presents.
As much as he would hate that they were taking advantage of his situation, he did recall how he owes them for their helping him get home. He sucked it up, and nodded.
"Well, I've got nothing to complain about any of this. Besides, getting to work with other superheroes makes me feel like I'm playing for a whole new league..."He said.
"Is that so?..."Kara asked, while the extra-dimenstional boy nodded.
"Yeah, not just because they're called the Justice League. I do owe you and your cousin's buddies, just glad it's not over lunch..."Danny said, lighting up the mood.
"So quippy even on your way to a mission to a place you've never been to, you're fitting in more than I thought..."Supergirl said, impressed that the ghost boy can be this savvy in this scenario.
Hearing that made Danny feel flushed as he looked away.
"Just acting how I usually act... Wanna keep my mind off this going wrong, after all..." He said shyly.
Kara shook her head in amusement, trying to steer this conversation into something that not so concerning over his safety.
"Let's just hope that we can still make another happy memory out of a small chance for him..."She thought, hoping with all her heart that the odds against Danny aren't immeasurable.
"I'll admit I'm still slightly nervous, but I'm willing to give it a try..." Danny admitted.
"Well...I'm glad just to see that you've lifted your spirits, cause your gonna need it for this mission..."She said, being frank here.
"I sure do, thanks..."He said, while the Argonian heroine nodded.
"Yeah, just make sure not to let your guard down, newbie. You're used to playing alone, now you get to play by League terms..."She said, being playful.
"I don't plan to be a member for long, so I don't mind if I get fired..."Danny said, making her laugh a bit.
"Yeah, but still...if you somehow mess that up, it'll be up to the rest of us to make up for you choking..."She teased.
Danny rolled his eyes.
"Hardy har har. Good to know sarcasm is a constant in the multiverse..."He snarked.
Kara smirked at that.
"Well, be happy that it's something you clearly seem to be familiar with..."She said, keeping the smirk.
Danny smiled slightly at that.
"I guess being called the "Girl of Steel" means she has the nerves to go along with that...if she can be so cool headed like this. It's kinda admirable..."He thought.
Mentally, Danny was still nervous about the scenario. Thankfully, the ghost boy wasn't going to let anything, even whatever villain he encounters, get him down.
Especially around the alien girl, whose company he enjoys.
"I so wish I can cross the barriers of time and space to make her my prom date, but life's never that easy for me..."He thought, sighing.
Kara noticed that and hoped that he was feeling okay.
"With luck, he'll head back with fond memories...with ALL body parts intact..."She thought, as the flight continued.
A little later
They soon arrived to Metro Tower, where they will be meeting up with the founders of the Justice League. They saw Superman waiting for them, hovering off the ground.
"You're here. Batman, Wonder Woman and and the others already waiting for us inside. Come..."Superman said as he motioned them to join.
The teens soon landed on the ground, following him.
The Earthbound headquarters of the Justice League that is viewed by the public. Said to be one of the few buildings on Earth that has direct contact with the Watchtower. While not native to this universe, Danny still did his best to show respect and follow the rules.
"Wow! Tucker would love to visit a place like this too..."Danny thought, as he looked around.
Once there, they saw that Green Arrow, S.T.R.I.P.E and their younger counterparts were there with them and the other league members.
"Hi guys, sorry that we're late..."Supergirl said, grinning as she waved to them.
"Supergirl..." Superman went in a scolding tone.
"Sorry..."His protoge said, not-so apologetically as she floated to where the other young heroes were.
"It's okay, we weren't waiting that long..."Speedy said nonchalantly, while his mentor spoke to the league founding members.
Danny soon stood next to her, clearly wanting to be next to the one he has the closest relationship too...both out of a sense of familiarity...and attraction.
Stargirl made a face at him, clearly not happy to see him here.
"What's he doing here? I thought this was suppose to be a LEAGUE mission!..."The star-spangled theme hero complained.
"Courtney, enough! Act like a professional!..."S.T.R.I.P.E said as his stepdaughter huffed and crossed her arms.
Danny frowned, annoyed by her attitude.
"I see that she's still as "charming" as ever..."He thought sarcastically.
Kara frowned at her attitude as she came to Danny's defense.
"If you must know, Danny was asked to join us on our mission. He'll be assisting us as backup and recon..."Supergirl said.
"For real?!..."Stargirl said in disbelief.
"Yeah, they said I'm like a wild card or something..."Danny said, in a somewhat smug way.
"A trump card, but close enough..."Supergirl said, while Star girl looked ticked.
The blonde maskless heroine and the blonde masked heroine both frowned at each other. Stargirl turned away, feeling petty as she felt her frustrations rise.
"I can't believe it! I had to ask Roy for a FAVOR to convince Green Arrow that I could be a great addition to help out here and get S.T.R.I.P.E. to get me on this mission, but this showoff gets INVITED to join the mission by the league's founding members?! Typical!..."She thought, irritated and frustrated with how easily the new guy got into this mission with her.
She also didn't like the fact that she was going to be out staged by not one, but two super-powered show-offs. As she sulked, the ghost boy went to ask the important questions on the mission.
"So, who's the bad guy and what's the M.O?..."Danny asked, wanting to get down to business.
The league members went to a nearby supercomputer. Batman typed some things and soon the image of a woman appeared, along with some details and statistics.
"Veronica Sinclair AKA Roulette. Former owner "The House"..."Batman said.
"The house?..."Danny asked, raising a brow at that name.
"It was an underground Casino for super-villains where mentally-controlled superheroes were compelled to fight each other to death..."The Dark Knight explained.
Danny looked stunned, and was immediately disturbed by what he just heard.
"Man, that sounds a pretty awful experience..."He commented, still disturbed.
"It was..."Wonder Woman said, frowning as she recalled the incident.
"What's she up to this time? Another casino?..."Supergirl asked, wondering why she's their mission's target.
"We have a few reliable sources that tell us that Miss Roulette has realigned herself with the Secret Society, or the Legion of Doom as some people are heard naming it..."Green Lantern.
"Not the most creative name for a bad guy group..."The Flash said, but he was ignored as they continued.
"Anyway, the more concerning information that's grabbed our attention are her new collaborators, two in fact..."Superman explained, as more images of who they're after appeared on the screen.
"Who are they?..."Danny asked, as he looked at the faces on the screens.
"Maxwell Lord and Mongul. The first one is more sketchy than dangerous but both Roulette and Mongul are highly dangerous and near the top of the League's most dangerous..."Superman said, with a hint of anger as he mentioned those names.
Danny raised his brow.
"Really? Maxwell Lord? Is that he made up name or something?..."The ghost boy asked.
"No, it's his legal name..."Batman explained.
The ghost boy looked like he was about to laugh upon hearing that.
"Seriously? His last name is "Lord" and his first name is Maxwell...Like Max Lord? Seriously? I'm guessing that his parents must have a sense of humor..."The ghost boy said.
The other heroes didn't laugh, save for one.
"Now that you mention it, that is a hoaky name..."The Flash said, quieting as he noticed the others weren't laughing along.
"Regardless, we need you for this..."Superman said, while his colleagues nodded.
"Also, you call yourself Danny Phantom. Not like you have much of a right to make a crack at his name..." Wonder Woman pointed out.
Danny's eyes darted away, silently admitting her point.
"So, what exactly do we have to do here?..."Danny asked.
"We need both confirmation and evidence of how and why Maxwell Lord has connections to Roulette and Mongul, as well as why Mongul is back on Earth. Anyone with her background being affiliated with the likes of those two can't mean anything good and I'd rather not imagine the worst case scenario..." Batman added.
The ghost boy understood and nodded.
"So, we basically just have to find said evidence of this Roulette lady's new partnership with these guys and see what they are up to, right? That doesn't sound too hard..."Danny said, finding this mission to be a lot less intense as he first thought it was gonna be.
Shayera noticed this and scoffed.
"Don't think that this is gonna be easy, Phantom kid. These three might not be Braniac or Darkseid, but if given the chance, they will kill you without even blinking an eye. Not sure your parents will appreciate us sending you home with a few pieces missing...so, let's avoid that as much as possible..."She explained, knowing how vile they are.
Danny wondered who those people the hawk-based woman mentioned but figured that they must be bad news, given the context. He remained silent as the heroes began to go over the basics of the bad guys.
"Since you're still pretty green about the villains that we fight, here is the basic information that you should know about them..."Superman said as he began.
"Roulette may not be a meta-human, but she is a skilled martial artist and an expert at hand to hand combat..."He began before pointing to her hair pins.
"See these?..."He asked.
"Her...hair pins?..."Danny asked, confused.
"Yeah, best to avoid them. They don't just keep her hair from being loose, she can even stab you with them if given the chance..."He explained.
"Noted..."Danny said before they began talking about Mongul.
"Mongul here is ruler of War World..."Batman said.
"War World?..."Danny asked, raising a brow.
"If it wasn't obvious, he's an alien..."Batman explained, noticing Danny rolling his eyes at the obvious before continuing.
"He used to be the ruler, at least before he lost a fight with me and I left the world under far less dangerous hands. He's a cunning strategist and his super strength and durability is almost on par with mine..."Kal-El explained.
"So, avoid getting punched out by him. Got it..."Danny said, making a note to stay intangible as much as he could.
"He also has access to advance technology from his planet and he's not afraid to use it, even if it risks blowing up a city..."Kal El added with serious tone.
They then went to the least threatening member of the trio, who also happened to be the apparent leader of their targets.
"Maxwell Lord is human but he's also a conniving mastermind who is willing to do anything to make money. He also used to be the manager for the Ultimen and is connected to Cadmus. After what happened, he snapped and hasn't been seem much by the public until now..."Batman added, frowning as he explained this.
"So, a greedy business who is getting involved with crooks...sounds clichéd..."Danny said, not impressed by what he heard.
"Anyway, our sources tell us that they are by Gotham and are involved in a black market deal involving stolen weaponry..."Green Lantern said, as he used his ring to produce a depiction of the building.
"This beats the constructs I see ghosts do by a long shot..."Danny thought, impressed as they watched the rest of the explanations.
"So, how do you suppose you'll handle it?..."Kara asked.
"Simple, I go ghost, phase in, use invisibility to sneak around unnoticed and if needed, I'll just shoot ice or green energy blasts from my hands, feet and maybe demonstrate powers I haven't even shown you yet..."He said, still having few more tricks up his sleeves.
Danny noticed a small smile on Supergirl's face, which he saw as a surprise. However, Superman cleared his throat.
"Well, something like that. We just need to get inside undetected and then once we gather the information, he'll deal with Mogul, Lord and Roulette as needed..."Superman said, as the others nodded.
"Got it..."Danny said.
All that was pretty standard and understandable to the ghost boy as he tried to get used to his brand new surroundings. Still, he felt like he can actually handle a mission like this, especially with other more experienced superheroes along side him.
"Well, I'm ready when you guys are..."Danny said.
"Then we shall depart soon. Let's hope that Hera sees us through this mission..."Wonder Woman said, as she wished them luck in her own way.
The others nodded before turning to their temporary new member, along Superman's protégé.
"We got this, Kal..." She said.
"Be careful and remember to finish the mission without any casualties. After all, the safety of the citizens should be our first priority..."Superman said.
The others nodded.
"Got it..."Supergirl said, giving a thumb's up.
Danny and the other heroes that his partnered with were all getting ready for the mission ahead of them. The ghost boy took a deep breath as he readied himself.
"Get ready kid, you're about to play in the big leagues..."The Flash said, giving a friendly point of his finger as he zipped by to give the newbie a quick pep talk.
"In that case, I better aim for a home run..."The ghost boy said, earning a big grin from the crimson speedster.
Kara giggled while Stargirl rolled her eyes at that. She was being unbelievably petty.
Danny was ready to begin his first ever superhero mission with actual superheroes that he's teaming up with. Despite his circumstances, he felt himself get giddy.
"Well, at least I'll have a ton of stories to tell Sam and Tucker when I get back home..."Danny thought, finding the silver lining in his current situation.
However, right now, he needed focus his attention back on this new task in front of him. He wanted to make his first mission one to remember.
Later
The group of heroes managed to sneak into one of Gotham's underground abandoned stations, thanks to Danny's invisibility, which helped them remain undetected.
After about 10 minutes of stealth and invisibility, they soon arrived to an underground bunker, where the events will take place.
"We're in..."Batman said, glad that they were inside.
"Way to go, Danny..."Kara said, making the ghost boy blush.
"Oh...it was no big deal. Stuff like escorting people through walls and solid objects like this isn't all that hard for me to do..."He said, rubbing the back of his head.
Stargirl saw this and rolled her eyes.
"So he can make things invisible, big deal. Martian Manhunter can basically do the same thing, only without making a spectacle of himself..."She muttered, pouting at the ghost boy showing his powers off.
The heroes searched around the bunker and soon found what looked to be some kind of blaster.
"Well, this isn't totally suspicious..."Danny thought sarcastically, as he hovered above the Leaguers observing.
"What's this?..."Kara said as she picked up the handheld device that looked a little too advanced looking for Earth's current state of technology.
"Looks Apokoliptian..."Batman said as he motioned for everyone to part as he fired the beam at a wall.
It created a loud portal before Batman pressed it again, making the portal disappear.
"Definitely wasn't made in Taiwan..." Supergirl said as she rubbed her ears.
Danny got a closer look at the device and noticed how familiar it was.
"This looks like a shorter version of my dad's bazooka, it was a portal gun..."He said.
"You're familiar with this kind of technology?..."Shayera asked, surprised.
"My parents made portals with their tech. I usually don't listen when they blabber about ghosts and their inventions, but you still pick some things up..."Danny said, shrugging in indifference.
"I've been meaning to ask... are your parents Ghostbusters or something?..." Supergirl asked.
"Well... neither of them are Bill Murray, if that's what you're thinking. Kinda surprised you have that here too. Anyway... my parents are kind of kooky, but at least they're smart where it matters... mostly matters..."He said, recalling some of their past blunders.
"Your parents are without a doubt two impressive scientists if they can build machinery like that..."Shayera said, without any hint of sarcasm in her voice.
"Thanks..."Danny said, flattered and still a little embarrassed as he remembered how his parents got into their old shenanigans.
"By any case, we should disassemble these things before those three use it for whatever they have planned..."Superman said.
"Already working on that..."Batman said as he tried open the gun.
"Do you think that you can open that thing?..."Kara asked, using x-ray to see it sealed tight.
Batman, despite his best efforts, made no progress. Since they didn't have a lot of time, he knew that he'd need to request assistance here.
"I may need help..." Batman said.
"Whose?..." Danny asked.
"S.T.R.I.P.E.'s can be useful in both supervision and machinery. I'm sure that he and Mr. Terrific can figure out how to deactivate it and find out where this thing came from..."Green Lantern said, hoping that the two tech savvy and machine experts can do the job.
"I could just phase the shell off, if you'd like..." Danny offered.
"You can do that? Make other things go all through-y?..." Stargirl asked.
"It's called intangible, and yes..." Danny said.
"Too much of a risk. For all we know, there might be a bomb of some kind..." Batman stated, being paranoid.
"Anyone tell you ythat ou're paranoid?..." Danny asked.
"I've lost count..." Batman responded, while both Superman and Supergirl used their X-ray vision to examine the device.
"I don't see anything to imply a bomb or exposure to radiation..." Supergirl said.
"How do you know?..." Danny asked.
"X-Ray vision..." Supergirl said plainly, as she pointed to her eyes.
Before Danny could ask, he decided to try his hand. The dark knight still didn't seem so sure, but also knew that they didn't have a lot of options right now.
"Fine... give it a shot..." Batman said, as he allowed the ghost child to work on the device.
Danny did as he said, making the cover intangible. Soon, the heroes had access to the inside of the machine, which is exactly what they needed.
"There we go..." He said, presenting it to Batman.
"Let's see what this has..." Batman said as he observed the inside.
That's when a beeping came from the gun. That got everyone's attention, and they all put their guard up.
"Uh oh..." Danny said, getting a bad feeling about this.
"Is that a timer?..." Stargirl asked, freaking out.
"No... I think that's... a security alarm!..." Supergirl said.
"Alarm?..." Danny asked.
"You can't hear it, but I can pick up its frequency and it's going off like crazy! We gotta move!..."Supergirl said, and Superman nodded.
"She's right. And I think we've got company..."Superman said, as his advance hearing picked up something.
That's when loud footsteps were heard. A wall was broken down, revealing what was on the other side.
"Robots!..." Danny said, fists glowing.
"Roulette and her accomplices must have sent them..."Green Lanter said, as he used his ring to create a shield to keep them at bay.
"Well, let's send them back to them...one piece at a time..."Shayera said, her weapon ready.
"Sounds good to me..."Danny said, hands and eyes glowing as more robots charged at them.
He tried to charge at it, while the robot tried to tackle him. Danny, however, deflected his attack and continued to brawl with it.
The other heroes did the same, and a battle ensued as they tried to take down the security robots.
"Take every last one of them. Mogul and his cohorts clearly don't want us to take this, so we have to get it as far away as possible from them!..."Superman said, as he used his super strength to punch out two of them.
"Got it..."Supergirl said, using her laser vision to hit another one.
The battle continued, as the heroes used their abilities to stay in the lead during this battle.
"The device?..."Superman asked Batman, who was throwing several explosive baterangs at some robots.
"I still need to examine it more. So, it be best to do under less chaotic circumstances unless we wanna risk detonating it!..."The dark knight said, as he kicked another robot that charged at hi.
"Understood..."Superman said, as he and Batman continued to take on the small army of robot, along with the other heroes.
Even the younger heroes were taking part of the fight, and holding their own in battle.
Green Arrow and Speedy were both firing at the robots, while S.T.R.I.P.E. was currently brawling another bot, and Stargirl was firing as many as she could with her staff.
"Take this!..."Stargirl yelled, as she hit another one.
"I got another one!..."Speedy said, having taken another bot down.
"Don't celebrate just yet. We've got more heading this way!..."Green Arrow said, as dozens of more robots arrived to the battle field.
"Oh please, two or two hundred...we can take them!..."Supergirl said confidently, as she hit another robot and sent in across the room.
"Less chatting, more hitting!..."Stargirl snapped, as she used her staff to blast another robot.
However, the way that she did it implied that she was just annoyed by her "rival's" confident attitude.
Supergirl rolled her eyes at that.
"She really needs to take a chill pill sometimes. Whatever, I hope that Danny is doing okay..."Supergirl thought, as she continued to pound these robots to the ground.
All the while, the ghost boy continued trying to pull his own weight in this fight.
With Danny
"Take this, tin man!..."He said, as he punched the robot and dented part of it and sent it to the ground.
However, another robot went at him, but Danny used his intangibility and ice powers to freeze it, along with ten more.
He smiled.
"Too easy..."He said in a cocky way, as he punched another one.
However, he got a little too confident and didn't sense another robot behind him that took advantage of this and rammed into him from behind.
"WHOA!..."Danny yelped as he and the robot were sent flying into a nearby wall.
Danny quickly became intangible and avoided crashing into the wall, but they were soon outside.
"Note to self, don't let that happen again..."He muttered, as he pushed the robot off of him and glared at it.
Soon, they were out on the streets and the ghost boy kept trying to overpower it. The ghost by was getting irritated as more robots appeared as soon as he destroyed it.
"I don't have time for another robot fight! I get enough of that from Technus as it is!..."Danny said, as he used his ice powers to freeze the biggest robot's body, trapping it in place.
The machine's circuit systems were frozen solid and was starting to get cut off from its power supply, making them physically immobilized. Danny took advantage of this and punches a robot's head off.
"At least with these guys I don't have to hold back..." He said to himself with a smile.
He then proceeded to freeze the other robots in place, trapping them. He smirked.
"I guess I'm just too COOL for you guys to handle..."He quipped.
However, the danger wasn't over yet it seems.
The robot head hits the ground, where a car swerves out of the way. The car, however, flies off the road and swerves towards a girl and her father.
"Daddy!..." She said, pointing at it innocently.
"Rebecca!..." He shouted.
"Oh no!..."Danny gasped upon seeing it.
He tried to go to them, to help them before the car could hit them. But, before he could assist, someone flew in and picked the two up to avoid the car.
It was Stargirl, who was sent by Superman to help protect the citizens after he had seen more robots heading outside.
She did as she was told, and had seen the car. She moved as fast as she could and used her staff to help save them.
"Gotcha!..." She said as she let them down once the car hit the side. "Oh man! Hang on!..." She said, as she used her staff to pull the door open and pull the driver out.
While the driver was still alive, he was injured and she got worried.
"Someone call an ambulance!..." She shouted, and a nearby citizen did so.
Danny saw this and was relieved to see that nobody was killed.
"Thank goodness. Looks like she isn't just all talk after all..."He said, impressed and relieved.
He frowned, as he saw the other robots head back inside for some reason.
"You guys aren't getting away that easy. Best finish this fast..." He said to himself, before heading back inside to resume his fight with the robots.
He went to rejoin the Justice League against the other robots, hoping end this before anyone else ended up getting hurt.
Meanwhile
Unknown to the heroes, the entire incident was being recorded and sent by a former businessman...however it was not Vlad Masters.
No, Lex Luthor was in his private bunker, watching everything unfold.
He frowned.
"I've lost money on this deal..."He muttered, but his eyes glanced on the newcomer of the Justice League.
The same one who already ruined his previous plan and saved Supergirl.
"So, this Danny Phantom thinks that he can interfere. Perhaps I should take care of him myself..."Lex said as he planned.
With no company or Mercy Graves to rely on anymore, he decided he'd have to handle this myself...and in many ways, that was probably even worse!
Oh boy.
