The Ghost Boy and The Super Girl

Chapter 24: A Phantom within the League

Danny quickly rejoined the battle, only to see that most of the robots were already scrap metal, mostly due to Superman and Supergirl clobbering them to smithereens.

"How's that!..."Supergirl said as she decked another one and turned it into a broken mess.

"Nice form, Supergirl. But try not to swing too hard as we might need to see whose handiwork this is..."Superman said as he did the same thing.

"You'd think they'd try something less predictable..."Green Lantern said.

he Flashed zipped by and disassembled three other robots.

"Must be a sale..."The speedster quipped and presented the screws in his hand.

"Must be..."Wonder Woman said as she used her lasso to swing one robot into a wall.

Supergirl continued to pummel her target but one robot tried to hit her from behind. Superman saw this and gasped.

"Supergirl!..."The man of steel shouted, ready to step in.

Thankfully, nothing happened to her as that robot was suddenly frozen in a block of ice and was shattered to pieces due to a blast.

Both alien heroes turned around and saw that it was Danny, who smirked.

"Hey, did I miss anything?..."He quipped.

Supergirl smiled in appreciation and punched out another robot that was charging at her.

"Oh, nothing much. Still got a few more of these metal creeps to take care of. You up for it?..."She teased.

"Definitely..."Danny said as he aided the heroes in taking down the robots.

After about 10 more minutes, all the robots were reduced to scrap metal and no longer a threat. The ghost boy saw this and smirked.

"Oh well, too bad that I can't take one as a souvenir. At least, we made some good memories that I can tell my friends about..."Danny said.

"It's not over yet. Mongul and the others already know that we are here..."Batman said.

"Which means that we need to move fast and stay out of sight..."Superman said while looking towards Danny.

"Way ahead of ya. Everyone, link hands like earlier..."Danny said.

"I'm guessing this is how you get girls to hold your hand..."The Flash quipped, only to be smacked by Wonder Woman.

"Focus!..."She said, annoyed.

"Ow! Easy, I'm not the enemy who you should use that crazy strength on!..."The red suited hero complained.

All the heroes linked hands and Danny quickly became invisible, and used his intangibility to get them out of there.

All the while, Batman took the device with them, wanting to examine it thoroughly and without interference.

Elsewhere

Mongul and his latest "business partners" were in the middle of their business deal when they heard the alarm go off and that the security robots were deployed.

"The Justice League. They must have found our weapons' stash!..."Maxwell muttered.

"Don't worry, Max. The security robots that I acquired should buy us some time. Mongul here can get the device back and we'll be done soon..."Roulette said, sounding cocky.

"I'm not your errand boy, but because I have a vendetta against the Justice League and their leader Superman, I'll make an exception and let you live..."Mongul said, hiding his anger.

"But what if they find us before he finds them?..."Maxwell asked, paranoid.

"Don't worry, this is the finest security system on the black market. We'll be able to track them anywhere they go. They really made the bad move, intruding on my territory..."Roulette said as she pressed a button.

However, to her shock, she saw no sign of the League.

"What?!..."She shouted, getting out of her seat.

"What is the meaning of this?!..."Mongul demanded.

"I don't understand. They were just there a second ago, but the camera's can't find them! Not even the motion sensors or heat detectors can pick up a trace..."Roulette said in anger.

"How is that possible?! It's not like they could just up and vanish from thin air!..."Maxwell said in dismay.

Mongul grew angrier.

"Clearly, your technology isn't as advanced as you had hoped!..."He yelled, seeing that his so called "new business partner" had made a terrible first impression.

"I see that whatever you experienced with that monster plant didn't make you any more peaceful..."Roulette sassed, angering the alien warlord even more.

"I'm about to give you a demonstration of what I did to that thing!..."He shouted, hands ready for tearing.

The purple suited alien then began to take matters into his own hands, approaching her with the intent to harm her.

However, before he could lay a hand on her, another hand grabbed his wrist. One with a grip powerful enough to pull him away. Before any villain could leave the room or realize what was happening, invisibility wore off to reveal the Justice Leagues Heroes ready for action.

"Hello, Mongul..." Superman said with a smile before punching him and sending him crashing into the wall.

"What?!..." Roulette went, getting up.

"Kryptonian?! How?! Even you don't have the ability to phase through solid matter!..." Mongul asks as he stood up.

"No... but he does..." Superman said, gesturing to Danny waving at them.

"Hey..."The ghost kid said, with a smirk.

Mongul saw Danny and frowned.

"WHO IS THIS?! Do not tell me that you all have gathered a new recruit in your pathetic excuse for your planet's greatest defense!..."Mongul asked, mocking not only Danny, but the Justice League as a whole too.

"I'm more of...a temp if you will. And I'm guessing that your wanted alien war criminal Mongul, or are just some guy in a purple leotard looking for work as a dancer?..."Danny quipped as he got a few laughs from the other heroes who were hiding nearby, especially Supergirl who giggled the most.

Stargirl, who had rejoined the battle just now, heard this joke and Supergirl's giggling. She rolled her eyes.

"It wasn't that funny..."She muttered.

She wasn't the only one, as the villain in question was infuriated by that crack.

"I will enjoy crashing your bones to dust!..."The former ruler of warworld declared as his teeth and fists clenched out of enraged fury.

"Go ahead and try..."Danny sassed as he avoided a punch from him by going intangible.

"What trickery is this?!..." Mongul questioned.

"You like? I'm also available for wedding and bar mitsvas..."Danny joked, as he sent a blast at him.

It was then that the other members of the league appeared from their hiding spots, joining the battle.

The villains, including Mongul, were shocked by seeing the heroes suddenly appear before them and looking unharmed from the security robots.

"How did you all get here?! This place is full of sensors that should have picked up any living energy and any solid movement from a mile radius!..."Maxwell stating.

"Not telling..."The Flash said childishly as they surrounded the villains.

"Do yourselves a favor and surrender, there's nowhere left for any of you to run..."Supergirl said as she and the heroes blocked every exit.

"Who's running?..." Roulette asked with a snarky tone in her voice.

She then pulled out a remote and pressed a button, and more robots suddenly appeared from the doors and floors while lasers popped out from the ceiling, all aimed at the heroes.

Soon, the entire room had been filled with machine soldiers, but the heroes were not discouraged at all.

"Wow, a little excessive, don't you think?..." Danny asked as he looked at the room.

"Actually, this is pretty tamed compare to the usual..."Supergirl commented before looking at Roulette. "Being a little stingy today?..."She mocked.

"I am trying to make a profit here..." Roulette said before pressing another button.

"Destroy them!..."She ordered.

"Oh, please..."Shayera said as she then pulled out her mace and aimed at one.

The battle soon began as the robots charged at the heroes.

Mongul took the momentary distraction to punch Superman on the face, causing him to let go, followed by pushing him towards the wall. Slamming the Man of Steel on the wall, he followed by punching him on the face three times before Superman caught his fourth punch before throwing a punch that sent Mongul flying, with Superman flying after him.

Flash kept outrunning the lasers aimed at him as he punched the robots while Speedy and Batman destroyed the lasers with their projectiles. Wonder Woman provided the two with cover, using her bracelets to block the lasers fired at them. Stargirl and STRIPE followed Hawkgirl's lead and destroyed the robots, Stargirl using her staff to blast at the robots while her stepfather used his suit to smash and blast the robots to pieces.

Supergirl was in the air, quickly flying down to smash the robots on the ground before flying up to repeat her tactic. She then saw Danny surrounded by five robots, and was about to rush to him before she saw him deliver a spinning heel kick that tore off the robots' heads in one kick. Soon, all the robots and lasers were turned to scrap metal by the heroes.

He smirked as Supergirl gave an impressed look.

"There's more where that came from!..." Roulette exclaimed as she pressed another button, and more, bigger robots appeared.

Soon, the entire room was crowded with large, bulky robots, surrounding them.

"What happened to trying to make a profit?..." Danny asked as one robot had a flamethrower.

"You know what they say, you gotta spend money to make money..."Roulette said.

"Well, you just WASTED your money here!..."Shayera said with a roll from her eyes, her mace sparking with electricity and rushed towards the robots with a battle cry.

The other heroes continued their fight.

Superman threw a punch at Mongul.

Batman threw a bat-a-rang at Roulette.

Stargirl fired from her staff at another robot.

Supergirl used her heat vision on more robots.

Due to their bigger size, the robots were more durable, even Supergirl needed to put effort into taking one down. Danny kicked one robot away, seeing that it didn't make a dent.

"Oof, a little hard there, let's see what happens when you're covered in ice..." Danny said, his eyes glowing blue.

Slapping his hands, he released a large wave of blue energy around the room. Slowly, the robots were covered in frost, slowing their movements, before their bodies were incased in ice.

"Woah..." Speedy commented as he felt chilly, though not enough to hinder him.

"Cool..."He commented.

"How did you freeze the robots without freezing us?..." Supergirl asked, not really bothered by the cold, but the others didn't seem affected by it.

"Lots of concentration..." Danny said as he took a breath.

He then kicked the robot, this time, the brittle metal easily shattering.

"That's better..."He said.

"Indeed..."Supergirl said, befofe punching another frozen robot and reducing it to a pile of rubble.

With extra thanks to Danny's ice powers, the robots were soon turned to scrap metal in a near instant. With that done, the one without a means to defend himself attempted to leave.

Maxwell Lord tried to make a sneaky escape, but The Flash cut him off.

The former business man then pulled out a blaster from his jacket and fired at Flash, but the man dodged it easily before his hands blurred, and Maxwell found himself holding a piece of the blaster.

"Long time no see, Maxie. How's the business life treating you?..."The speedster quipped.

"Speaking of which, how'd ya get mixed up with this crowd?..." He asked genuinely curious as to why Maxwell of all people associating himself with Roulette and Mongul.

They were two people that own their respective fighting areas that force combatants to battle one another, while Maxwell Lord is just...well...a delusional, greedy man who'd do anything for a profit.

He's not a combatant like them.

Maxwell glared at him, filled with anger and resentment.

"After you all ruined the Ultimen and any rights I had left to even be associated with them anymore, I don't even know if those kids are still live or not thanks to all of you!..."He said, glaring at him.

"I wanted payback for ruining our lives and to get them back. It was impossible without Cadmus, That, and I needed to do something with my life and...let's just say that I found some new investors to help me fix my custody problem that kept me out of financial security. No thanks to you guys!..."He said, revealing his motives.

"Sorry, not sorry. I didn't think someone like you would actually care all that much about revenge or clones who you advertise as super weapons to kill us..."The Flash said as he was shocked to find out about this Maxwell's motive for joining these other villains.

"You'd be surprised..." Lord muttered.

"So…"The Flash said, before he suddenly punched Maxwell, causing the man to fall to the ground like a sack of potatoes.

All the while, Mongul and Superman were in a fist fight right now, one that even started to shake that walls around them.

"At last... revenge, Kryptonian!..."The demented alien shouted, only to be suckerpunched into the wall.

"Don't count on it..." Superman said.

Roulette saw the fighting between her side and the Justice League escalating and she didn't like how the odds with stacked against her and her business associates.

Any gambler that's been in the business as long as she has known when to call it quits before things go south.

Roulette looked around her surroundings and knew that it was time to call it quits, or in this case a strategic retreat.

"Just like the old saying, why fight today when you can fight tomorrow? Plus, I still have far too much work on my plate to get caught this soon..." Roulette thought to herself as she reached into her hidden pockets and threw a handful of smoke bombs at the heroes.

"What are you doing?!..."Mongul demanded an answer.

"Ordering Chinese food! What does it look like I'm doing?! We gotta go!..."Roulette shouted as she continued to do this act.

"My revenge!..."The alien shouted.

"Save it! We can't have them ruin it now!..." Roulette shouted.

As the smoke made visibility difficult, Flash was met with a fist to the face, making him let go of Lord.

Just as Roulette threw a bigger smoke bomb. Once it cleared up, the Justice League saw that Mongul, Roulette and Maxwell Lord had all escaped.

"Darn it, they got away..."Supergirl said, upset.

"Sorry..."Danny said, hating this.

"Geez, How does a guy with a bodybuilder bod that big move so fast? You'd think that one of us would've spotted him..."He said, frustrated.

"No worries. We're not leaving empty handed..."Batman said as he went to a nearby computer and pull out a flash drive.

However, the alarms went off and the self destruct was activated and with a timer too that just started counting down.

"Oh man, a countdown only mean that someone's getting a really cool birthday cake soon or we all explore, and I don't see any lit candles anywhere..."Danny said before sighing.

"Looks like this world has extremely unnecessary to add self-destruct programs too..."He added as he was ready to become intangible and get them out of here.

Batman wasn't unsettled.

"No need. I got this. I can bypass their firewalls and shut it down remotely..."Batman said as he typed some stuff and the self destruct sequence was aborted.

"Self destruct sequence has been deactivated..."Was heard.

"Huh?..." Danny went, left speechless seeing the Dark Knight handling that potential crisis so casually, and succeeding.

"Batman knows a thing or two about hacking and disarming computers, as well as bombs, so much that it's become second nature to him..."Supergirl said, knowing full well that Batman is so much more than just some rich guy in a batsuit.

"I guess we know what his power is..."Danny thought as the powerless superhero continued to work his magic on the computer and continue searching through the files.

"It'll only take a moment..." He said, gathering information, while decrypting it with his Sherlock Holmes mind.

"If you say so..." Flash responded, leaning on the wall.

While Batman was doing his detective sleuthing alongside the veteran justice league members, all the other heroes were checking to see if they're all alright and assess the situation.

"No major injuries so far..."Superman said, relieved.

After a few minutes, Batman nodded.

"There, we got what we needed..."He said.

"What about those clowns?..."Danny asked.

"Like most clowns I've deal with, they'll be finding themselves behind bars soon..."Batman said, his wording causes Danny to raise an eyebrow.

"You should see the kind of crooks he takes down on his own..."Supergirl said.

"Hopefully I won't need to..." Danny responded.

"I agree..."Stargirl muttered.

"So, we should deal with those three stooges who just left... and I'm just assuming you have those on your Earth too..."Danny said while no one corrected him, confirming his thought.

"A problem that'll be solved another time..."Superman said, marking the end of questions for the new recruit.

"Meaning that our mission is done for now and we all head back and plan what we all do moving forward..."Supergirl said to Danny, figuring there was nothing more to do.

Superman simply nodded, gesturing that Kara guessed right. That was it.

Soon, the heroes left the now abandoned area, taking with them the device and data.

Mission... semi-accomplished.

Later

Danny and the Justice League were now at one location that they would go to after a mission was complete, a sort of rest stop for them.

It was hidden in Gotham City, by Wayne Manor.

Danny was present in front of the founding members of the Justice League, most of them looked accepting and proud. The only exception was Batman, remaining as stoic as ever.

"Nice one, kid..." Flash said.

"Thanks..." Danny said sheepishly as he scratches the side of his head, still feeling unsure.

This mission wasn't a complete success, but not a total failure either and Danny was alright with he first superhero team mission ending with ok. Knowing that if he ever does get a second chance, he'll definitely do next time for sure.

Granted, he was more concerned with going home, but being applauded for his good deeds was not something he'd get sick of.

"You did better than expected..." Batman said with his usual stoic appearance.

"But the bad guys still got away..."Danny said, disappointed.

"Don't worry. I left a little tracker on one of them. We'll send a another team to apprehend them and find out what else they're up to. What matters now is that we gathered the data and the device, so they can't surprise us..."Batman said, showing the blueprints of the weapon they found.

"See, it wasn't a total lost..."The Flash said, eating a doughnut.

"I guess so..." Danny said, lighting up.

"It's a real shame that you'll have to go home soon, you'd make an excellent member for the League..." Kara said, making the ghost boy blush at that.

"Heh... Thanks..." Danny said, rubbing the back of his head in a sheepish manner.

"Well, he'd have to wait a while if he were to stay..." Superman said with a light smile.

Stargirl saw all of this and huffed.

"Unbelievable!..."She thought, feeling overlooked yet again.

Angered, Stargirl walked away.

Only Danny noticed and the ghost boy watched her go with knowledge of what she did, while Supergirl misunderstood his thoughts.

"She'll get over it... eventually..." Supergirl said.

"Thanks..." Danny said, eyes darting to where Stargirl went.

Soon, he managed to excuse himself to go find her.

Stargirl huffed, upset about how she had an opportunity taken, this time by someone who isn't even a member.

"Stargirl?..." Danny asked.

She rolled her eyes.

"What do you want?..." She questioned harshly.

"I just wanna say... good job out there..." Danny said.

"Yeah... getting smacked around, quite the victory I had..." She muttered.

"I meant when you saved that girl from getting hit by the car..." Danny clarified.

That caught her attention.

"You saw that?..."Stargirl asked, and he nodded.

"I did. You saved that girl and her dad. I also saw how you saved the driver and stayed until the ambulance came. You might not be getting a lot of attention, but it's all thanks to you they survived. So... nice one..." Danny said.

"Oh... uh... thanks..." Stargirl said, looking sheepish as she honestly didn't expect this from him.

"Yeah, you deserve the credit for that. At the least, you're that girl's hero..." He said.

As Danny nodded and walked away, Stargirl just watched him walk away, feeling her face turn warm.

Danny didn't see that. He was too busy catching up to Kara.

"So... we all done?..." Danny asked.

"Yup. And as soon as Doctor Fate comes tomorrow, we'll be here..." Kara responded.

Danny smiled in relief.

"The sooner I get an answer on how to get home, the better..."He thought, hoping this Fate can open a portal to send him home.

As the two left, they didn't see Stargirl was still staring where Danny once was. Her face turned red, still processing what was happening.

"He... he noticed what I did..." She thought but quickly walked away with her face covered and hoping no one saw her.

Speedy and S.T.R.I.P.E. noticed her sudden change in behavior.

"What's with her?..."Speedy asked.

S.T.R.I.P.E. was completely silent for a moment, unused to this.

"I'm not sure. She's never been this quiet before..."He said, wondering what's up with his sometimes volatile stepdaughter.

Little did they know, she was change her opinion on Danny completely at that point.

Much more than any of them could have expected.

Later

Danny and Kara flew off, looking back at Metro Tower. The ghost boy smiled as he turned his head to look at Supergirl.

"So... guess we gotta make my last hours in this world count. What's to eat?..." Danny asked.

"I know a place. Come on... you'll love it..." Supergirl said.

With that, Danny followed her, looking forward to finally getting home.

By this time tomorrow, he'll more than likely see his family and friends again.
