Chapter 5.

"You know, Miss Blake. I have to ask. Why Wayne Enterprises?" Lucius asked the next day during lunch hour. First day wasn't too terrible. I started off easy. Dusting the floors and taking everything out before it was time for me to take the train back home. We were both seated at his desk, and he'd invited me to lunch.

I shrugged. "I guess I'm the minority, but I wanted to make a difference. This city is rotting to its very core, and for a long time, I was scared to do anything. When I started to read up on the Wayne family and how they tried to help it too, well, I got inspired. I had planned on getting my Bachelor's and then my Master's. I wanted a couple of degrees actually. English and Business. I'm fascinated by people's stories, and how they become who they are you know? Like you, for instance, how'd you end up down here in the Applied Sciences Division?" I dipped an apple slice into my peanut butter and bit into it with a crunch. I assumed I was going to be working here as well, since he had wanted me to be apart of maintenance down here.

He took a sip of his coffee. "I worked with Thomas Wayne. I was on the board you know."

"Actually, that's the only part I don't understand. Why were you suddenly not on the board?"

"I think I ruffled Earle's feathers a little too much for his liking," he said.

"But you helped him build his train, routed right into Wayne Tower," I frowned sadly at the history I knew of the Thomas Wayne. "That's not fair."

Lucius smiled softly at me as I took another bite. I shook my head and took my water bottle from the side of my lunch bag and took a sip of cool liquid.

"Ugh. The nerve. Why is it always the nice ones that get shafted?" I asked, shaking my head, and closed up my water bottle, then placed it on the side of the table. "At any rate. It doesn't make sense the way Earle is acting especially when Wayne Tower is supposedly the heart of Gotham. Thomas wanted to save the city, not destroy it. How come there are people who want to destroy things, Lucius? I mean what's the point? When everything is destroyed are they satisfied?"

"I don't know, Miss Blake, you tell me. You're the one that's fascinated with other people's stories."

I shrugged. "Well, I can't say anything about a sociopath. I've never been on that end, and I don't plan to."

Lucius's eyes marveled at me a bit as he sipped his coffee and grinned slightly before he took another sip.

"What?" I asked, noticing his look.

He shook his head. "Nothing."

I sighed. "Well, I suppose lunch hour is almost done. I started dusting the area, now I just gotta restock and reconfigure everything. It really is a mess, especially down here."

I started to pack up my things and then headed back to my little corner of the division floor.

"Be careful with that attitude, Miss Blake. Earle might have you clean applied sciences next."

I gave him a look, but then grinned. "I'll be looking forward to it."

"Have fun," he said, and I saluted him, heading back into my space. I took another look at it and sighed. Yep. It was going to take me all day to finish, but that's fine. I got a jump-start yesterday, and today I'll finish dusting and putting all the files together in each of these stacked bins.

Well, it was definitely better than the restaurant dump that's for sure. I wasn't going to get anywhere there, but maybe I could find my way through here. Then I looked at the stacks of papers in piles and piles on my desk that I haven't even touched yet. A slight grunt left my lips as I placed my lunch down on my desk.

Time, I thought. It was going to take time.
