Chapter 9: A favor

The route Rachel took was the same every single day. The train rides to work and from home. Bruce knew he was going to protect her, so I'd given him the same route, and moved on. There wasn't much there for me to do anyway, so I was back at Wayne Enterprises, staring down another huge warehouse that needed some much filing done that Mr. Lucius Fox himself had wanted me to do for him. There was really no point. I'm not even sure why he bothered asking me to come with him, if not maybe just to help me get out of the house every now and then, which I appreciated, if that were the case. He never said anything though, and I never asked. I was at work most of the time these days, with Lucius showing me the ropes around Wayne Enterprises. I kept mostly to myself and tried to avoid Earle and his board members. Needless to say I was not a fan of the suits.

The only suit I cared about was Thomas Wayne and he was gone. I liked Lucius Fox a lot, and we seemed to get along great. I wished he was my boss these days. He made sure I got to my apartment safe and sound, but it wasn't until when I walked into the door that I got an answering machine full of Alfred Pennyworth's messages. So, after I showered and had some ramen noodles for dinner again, I plopped down on my couch, and started to dial the number he left. Wow. I was calling Alfred Pennyworth, Thomas Wayne's old butler. I wonder what he wanted from me. And how did he know me exactly? Did Bruce already start talking about me?

"Hello, Alfred?" I asked, chewing on the bottom piece of my hair nervously as I sat curled against my couch.

"Ah, Miss Blake. I'm really glad I finally caught you. Listen, I have a favor to ask of you."

"A favor to ask of me?"

"Yes, I understand you are now the archivist who works down at Wayne Enterprises?"

"I sure do, but what does that have to do with me right now, calling you at like 3 in the morning?" I asked, glancing back at my watch. I heard him chuckle.

"Well, it's a bit, uh, interesting actually. Yes, he did mention you that Mr. Earle had hired a new Archivist, which I found extremely interesting, especially when the company was going a bit, well, down under I'm afraid…."

The color of my cheeks turned hot, and I started to worry. Shit. "Oh?"

"Yes. But, I also found out some primitive information about you my dear. Thing is…I need your help. I have an idea and I want to run it by him, but could you come by in the morning?"

I swallowed hard. "How early?" I wasn't a morning person… but what could this butler possibly have on me? And it sounded like a threat too. Did I take my pepper spray with me?

"How's 8:00 sound?"

"That's the time I have to go into work, sir."

"Perfect, so does, Bruce. You two can arrive together," he said, and I swore I could hear the man smirk. "Sweet dreams, Miss Blake." A shiver went down my spine, and I hit the end button on my phone. What the hell?

Now how was I going to sleep after that?! And besides, at 8? What if Bruce didn't go in at the same time as me? What was Alfred trying to pull here? Well, now I had to go because I was going to have words with him AND Bruce Wayne and I didn't care if I interrupted his morning routine of green smoothies and push-ups if he did such things a billionaire like him should do every morning! I didn't care what he did at night. Or….well, maybe not me, maybe someone else might. I bit my lower lip, now too scared to go to sleep. I sank back in my couch, and turned the light on again. There was no way I was going to sleep tonight at all.
