We start off with Dwayne Junior narrating.
The school system, the way it is set up, is useful for helping young kids achieve their goals. And, a school sporting event, can bring out the best and worst of the students that are playing. This is the competitive Junior year.
The tugs theme then plays
Junior's POV
We were nearing the end of the term, and there was one last game taking place, the weekend before the school dance. After one of the practices, we were in the dugout discussing strategy, when an unfamiliar man walked into the room.
Reader's POV
"Oh hey dad, didn't think i'd be seeing you here" said Hudson. Hudson's father then walked up to Junior and Bertha. "If you two don't mind, I would like to talk to the both of you somewhere private" he said.
The private conversation was taking place, up in the stands. "There is a reason why my son is the way he is" said Hudson's father. "As crazy as it may seem, he doesn't hate either of you, he actually hates baseball." Junior and Bertha couldn't believe their ears. If he hates baseball so much, why does he want to win the world series? "This hatred comes from unfair treatment to a family member" said Hudson's father. "He was never the same person after the incident."
**Flashback**
"Growing up, Hudson got scared very easily." "He got terrified every time he heard a loud noise, and didn't like to come anywhere near someone who was stronger than him, even if they were friendly." "He was always scared of strangers, even if they were people that wanted to help him, like police officers." "He also wasn't very good at sports." "At school, he was often the last student to be picked for a sports team." "Several of the other students thought he was a total coward, and they laughed at him." "His best friend was his older brother Marcus." "Marcus was four years older than him, and had aspirations to be the greatest baseball player in MLB history." "But there was a problem, when he was playing high school baseball, his team was at the bottom of the league." "This was not because they were bad, they just kept getting screwed due to bad calls by the umpires." "That's what happened in his first three years of high school, until he got to his senior year." "The umpires finally stopped fucking things up, and the team instantly became the best in the league." "Going into the championship game, they had not lost a single game all season." "This was turning out to be a major underdog story." "And now, we come to the point where everything went downhill." "In the bottom of the ninth inning, it was a tie game, the team had two outs, and the bases were loaded." "Marcus was up to bat, and he had gotten three balls and two strikes." "The pitcher then did something absolutely despicable." "When he threw the ball, he was aiming straight for Marcus' face." "The ball smashed into his face, and despite the fact it was clearly outside the strike zone, and the fact that hitting Marcus in the face with the ball was deliberate, the umpire declared it a strike." "The team would end up losing the championship in extra innings, and Marcus died in the hospital a day later from severe skull fracture." "Hudson was taking the loss harder than any of us." "If that pitch was officiated properly, Marcus would have died as a winner." "From that day onward, Hudson's mindset was that anybody who made a bad call in a sporting event, deserved to die." "This was the incident that ended his days of being a coward, he was no longer going to take bullshit from anybody." "The only reason why he wants to win the world series so bad, is because he wants to finish what his brother started, by any means necessary." "As soon as he wins the world series, he's retiring from baseball, and never playing again."
Junior's POV
Prior to hearing this story, I thought Hudson was an asshole. I then realized that he's not a bad person, he's a sad person. While it may not have been justified, he had a reason for being the person he was. I really felt bad for Hudson, and I realized that I couldn't do absolutely nothing, I needed to talk to him about this. But that is a story for another day.
Author's note: This is why I really hate bad calls in sports. The athlete that gets screwed, may never win again.
While most of us would prefer that we live to an old age, and only die due to natural causes, not everyone can be lucky. We are all aware of the fact that we are going to die, but we do not know when.
I am absolutely shocked, that fatalities from being hit by a pitched ball, are next to impossible. Those balls are being thrown at speeds up to 90 mph, and the batter is wearing an open faced helmet.
Thank you for reading and please have a great day.
