Chapter 12: Lighten Up
The next couple of days, Gotham got hit with a ton of rain. And it'd been raining for two days straight. By the time I got back to my apartment after work that day and within the Narrows, I stopped dead short.
Someone had broken in.
Panic flooded through me, and I instantly reached for my baseball bat that was hidden in the closet beside my door. I flicked the lights on and gripped it tightly within my hands, walking around my apartment to find nothing here except for… an assortment of teddy bears dumped all over my couch.
"Anyone here?" I asked. Really Mel, after all the horror movies you've seen, you're going to ask if the perpetrator is here? Oh, shut up, I argued with my inner voice of better judgment than me right now.
I drew in a deep breath and realized that no one was here. Falcone's shipment dumped in random apartments in the Narrows? They had to know someone lived here right? Or maybe I was just that invisible….
Suddenly my door handle started to twist open and more panic flooded through me. I quickly decided to hide behind my kitchen counter, taking my bat with me as anxiety built within me. Three people marched right in, and I winced, trying to hold in my screams of fear inside of me right now. Was I being robbed? Set up? What was going on? I started to slowly peek at who was barging in on my apartment. Yeah. I was really that invisible. Earle didn't even say hello to me today when I went in for work down in Archives and the Science Division. As if my day couldn't get even worse….now this?
I had half a mind to call Bruce, but what could he do at this point? I narrowed my eyes at the handsome man walking into my apartment with a suitcase by his side. He looked like he was a doctor. Doctor….he had glasses on perched up his nose as he walked around and observed the place. Two people were with him and behind him, but strangely enough, I sensed another, but he was hiding.
I gripped tightly against my bat, trying not to make a sound, and waited to hear what they were doing.
I looked at his badge once the man came closer and read his name printed on as Dr. Crane. I widened my eyes and hid closer towards the corner L shaped of my small kitchen. Holy Shit….
"Get rid of all traces," Crane said with the flashlight in hand. The two people behind him came in with gasoline and started to burn my own apartment down. I wanted to get up and scream and say hey this is my apartment you douc bag but I thought better of it.
"Torch the whole place," one said.
"All right."
I gasped a little, but then a hand covered my mouth and quickly removed me from my kitchen and outside towards the balcony, not letting me go at all. I screamed internally of course but was glad that at least I wouldn't be burned with my OWN apartment. I was almost in tears.
Crane was looking outside the balcony. I was left alone, in my hiding spot, trying not to move, or whimper at the fear of getting caught by him.
One guy stopped to take a piss, but then his head was smashed into the window, knocking him out cold, and making Crane turn around to see what happened.
The other had a lighter in his hand, but Batman smashed it out of his hands and knocked this thug out too. Then Scarecrow suddenly sprayed something heavily toxic in his face that caused him to double over. He tried to fight the fear of his own within the toxin shot at him.
"Oh! Having trouble are we? Take a seat! Have a drink," he continued as Batman faltered over his own fears, stumbling into my chair and couch. I wanted to help him but he'd given me strict orders not to and keep quiet and stay hidden. "You need to stop taking things too seriously. Do you want my opinion? You need to lighten up!"
Then he lit Batman on fire!
He dropped on top of a car and then over onto the ground in flames as he tried to rush over. I got out from my hiding spot, and quickly ran down from staircase to staircase all the way down to the ground to where he had calmed down from the fire and was trying to call Alfred on his cell phone in the middle of the rain.
"Br-" I began but then saw people watching in horror. "BATMAN! Hey, go away if you don't want to help! Or at least call 911!"
"No, no, need to call Alfred," he chocked out as soon as he saw me as I was directing people away from him. He got up and ran back to the alley with my help as I grabbed his arm and took him to hide. He dropped down, nearly taking me with him as we nearly fell over the trash of the alleyway.
"Come on Bruce," I whispered urging him to come on. He gripped me tight and then took out his gun scaple and shot up in the air getting back on the rooftops so no one would follow us. We climbed up top together and he took out his cell again to try Alfred once more. "Alfred!"
I grabbed the cell out of his hand and got out from underneath him.
"Alfred, this is Melanie Blake. We need your help, please."
"Who's we?"
"Batman… Bruce Wayne needs your help right now. And so do I. My apartment's just been burned down by Scarecrow. Please hurry. He's under stress and hallucinations of some kind of toxin. I didn't see what he sprayed, but it's awful, Alfred. He can barly function right now."
"Okay stay where you are and down move. Tell me the address."
I proceeded to tell him the address of where we were and waited by Bruce's side, hoping we were safe for now…. "It's okay…" I tried to tell him. I wasn't good with this stuff but whenever I felt awful or anxious my own foster parents would tell me it was okay, even if it wasn't, it was kind of comforting and I hoped it was for him.
