Waking up to hugs and kisses, praises and loving words from everyone around him sure was nice and all but hearing apologies and self - loathing statements mixed in as well made his heart clench.
'Just how much have they suffered because of me?'
Nonetheless, he kept such thought deep inside of him in front of the others so as not to cause a mess and to focus on more important stuffs like his heart warming reunion with Rem - the one who had drowned his mind in regret and longing for so long.
"Subaru - kun, Subaru - kun, Subaru - kun!"
Rem said in a longing tone while sobbing in both guilt and relief. Although she at the time wanted nothing more than to be by his side, hugged him as tight as she could (without killing or breaking his bones of course, Rem was a gentle woma- lover after all) so that he would never go away again, her immense guilt and the realization that he deserved so much more than what little she was worth kept her so far away from her hero.
"Rem, I …"
Clearly misinterpreted her distancing away from him as his fault once again. Another addition to his pile of worthlessness, to make someone who used to Iove him so much be this wary and uneasy near him, not that he had ever thought to be deserved of such admiration before. So, unconsciously, he kept his glaze low and away from her eyes, fearing what emotions were hidden behind them.
"Subaru - kun ..."
Misunderstood his gestures as attempting to avoid her disgusting self. She too, looked downward and instinctively stepped one step back. Both her heart and body were screaming at her to turn around and run away as fast as the could; she, however, ultimately decided against it and determined to face whatever punishments she rightfully deserved from the one she loved the most. But before that, she had one last thing to say.
"Subaru - kun, Rem ..."
The two of them had raised their head and looked straight into each other eyes, those eyes were filled with sadness and guilt, with regret and desperation but also with hope,with fondness and with absolute resolve to make things right once more.
And with a gulp and a moment of hesitation they both cleared their voice and readied themselves to face the other head on:
"Rem, I apologized for every time I have wronged you and especially my uselessness for being unable to protect someone who had cared for me so much; and although I understand your hatred toward me, I will try everything I can to atone for my failures!"
"Subaru - kun, Rem is so disgusting and horrible to have caused you so much pain and sufferings; Rem is also so selfish that she wanted you for herself although she has done nothing to receive it; Rem never deserves your love and never will but please let me be by your side because I can not bare being unable to help you again!"
"Huh"
"Eh?"
Everyone surrounding them had their emotions making a 180 turn from worries and pity for how cold and awkward their reunion seemed, to facepalming real hard at the stupidity and low self-esteem of these two lovable fools. Their emotional train still didn't stop there and made a steep 90 turn while drifting on two tracks then crashed down with giggles and tender smiles at the sight of the two lovers tackling each other to the ground, hugging, and screaming apologies and each other name while crying … a lot.
Everyone was happy for them, except the new found Subaru cul- fan club (which expanded with every viewings) who suddenly became very compatible to the factor of Envy. /
