Chapter 16: Just a Pawn

I drew in a deep breath and walked by Bruce's side. "Everyone. Everybody! Miss Blake and I have an announcement to make. I just asked her to marry me, and to be my fiancé…and…."

"She agreed," I said as he was already taking out the ring to place it on my finger. They awed and clapped happily for us. I smiled wide.

"So, now, I, uh, well, we," he began and grabbed another glass of champagne. He dinged it with his fingers on the side to keep everyone quiet. "I want to thank everyone for coming tonight and drinking all my booze."

Everyone chuckled.

"No really," he said sarcastically. "Uh, there's a thing about being a Wayne that you're never short of a few free-loaders-"

"Bruce," I whispered. He gave me a look, and I closed my mouth shut, shaking my head at him and realized that Ra's was watching us.

"Like yourselves… so here's to you people.

"Hey Bruce, that's enough,"

"Mm, no," he said, taking a sip of his own. I glanced around the room awkwardly. There was no way I could continue this with everyone looking at us quite pissed off. I knew he was putting on a show, a 'drunk' show, but Ra's was right. I couldn't do it.

I dropped my arm and crossed my arms, now completely sober as I watched on the sidelines as he continued.

"No, I'm not finished. To all you uh, all you phonies! To all you…." He chuckled. "Too faced friends…"

"Bruce-" I tried.

"No, no, I mean they were talking to you all night, do they even remember your name, Melanie? Dear sweet, sweet Melanie?"

I chewed my lower lip and looked around the room. No one seemed to say a word. I looked down at the floor, and kept my arms crossed tight.

"She came from the Narrows, and I saved her life."

"Ok, they don't care," I said finally.

"No they don't," Bruce said. "They're just sick-a-phantic suck ups. You smile through your teeth at me. Please, leave…. Leave me in peace. Just go…please go…. Stop smiling, it's not a joke, please leave. The party's over, get out."

I looked around and saw that no one was leaving so I took the first step and took the ring off of my finger and handed it to him in a closed fist. "Maybe you should rethink think this when you are sober," I said firmly and tapped the palm of his hand, to let him know that I was leaving, hoping that's what he meant with Ra's there.

"The apple has fallen very far from the tree, Mr. Wayne," one of his colleagues said.

I was about to leave and dash back to Alfred until one of Ra's men held my arm in the hallway. I looked at him with a glare. "Nice try princess."

I grimaced at the lame nickname. Great. Just great. I knew Bruce was trying to get me out of the way safely and I was more than happy to but for whatever reason I'd caught Ra's eye. It's not like we knew each other and Bruce was right. Maybe I was just a pawn here. One could only hope.
