Chapter 21: The Rest of the Board
My year of acting had been a dream come true, but now I was done with it. It wasn't my place anymore. And now here I was sitting on the board recording everything that Mr. Fox was saying. I thought that maybe I could come back to Wayne Enterprises. I'd asked Bruce to come back to my old job as Archivist. I missed working behind the scenes with him and the Batman stuff. I'd been in only a couple of movies and a few info commercials for Gotham City, and that was it. If I wanted to really pursue acting, my agent said I had to travel to L.A. and Hollywood, and I wasn't sure if I wanted to go all the way over there, so my agent dumped me. I wasn't as serious about acting as I should have been because my life was here in Gotham with Bruce. I wanted to help him achieve his dream that was part of my own as well, and get back to normal.
And now here I sat in the meeting with Mr. Fox and the rest of the board and a very sleepy Bruce Wayne. Yeah, I was definitely needed here more than my short-lived acting gig.
"In China, Lau Security Investments stands for dynamic new growth. A joint Chinese venture with Wayne Enterprises will be a powerhouse," Mr. Lau explained.
"Well, Mr. Lau I speak for the rest of the board…" he began, then looked at the sleeping Bruce Wayne. "And Mr. Wayne expressing our own excitement."
The meeting ended, and the board walked away. I nudged Bruce awake, and he jumped up, startled. "What?" he asked.
"You slept through the entire meeting. That's twice this week, Bruce," I whispered as I turned the television off.
"That's why I rehired you," he grinned cheekily at me. "So, what did I miss?"
I sighed, shaking my head. Was it though? "A joined Chinese venture. I think it's going to be a great idea."
"You do?"
"Of course," I said, and then heard voices talking in the hallway. "Hang on."
I got up from my seat, folding my folders up, and taking my yellow pad with me in my arms, as I walked out over to the hallway. I saw Coleman and Mr. Fox talking to each other.
"Do them again," Fox said to him. "Wouldn't want the trust fund to run out now would we?"
Coleman shook his head and then turned to see me. "Oh, uh, sorry," he said. "Miss Blake. Hi," he coughed.
I smiled, blushing a bit. "Hello Mr. Reese. How are you doing today?"
"F-fine. Good. Just recalculating my numbers," he stammered, and then turned to leave.
"Huh," I said. "Should I be worried about him?"
"No, I wouldn't count on it, Miss Blake," Fox said. "He just got flustered by a very pretty girl."
I blushed again. "Thanks, but I'm not that pretty. Well, maybe. Something I learned in acting while my makeup artists helped me look pretty. Camera does add ten pounds you know."
He chuckled at me. "How'd you like it?"
"It was good," I said. "But then I remembered who I was, and I mean really remembered. I need to be here. I forgot how thrilling it was catching bad guys, you know?"
Mr. Fox chuckled again. "I do know. Did you wake him up?"
I smiled. "Yes, I did."
I walked with him back to the conference room, meeting up with Bruce who was now overlooking the city, and hugged my notepad tight against my chest as my heeled shoes clicked together on the floor as I walked with him.
"Another long night? This joint venture was your idea, and the consultants love it. But I'm not convinced. Lau's company has grown by eight percent annually like clockwork. His revenue stream must be off the books. Maybe even illegal," Fox warned.
Hadn't considered that.
"Okay. Cancel the deal."
"You already knew," Fox said.
"Just needed a closer look at the books," Bruce said.
"Anything else you can trouble me for?" Fox asked.
"I need a new suit," Bruce said.
"Three buttons is a little nineties, Mr. Wayne," Fox joked.
"I'm not talking about fashion, Mr. Fox, so much as function," he said.
Bruce handed him some blueprints, and I took a look at them with Mr. Fox.
"You wanna be able to turn your head," Fox noticed.
"Sure make backing out of a driveway easier," Bruce said.
"I'll see what I can do," Fox said.
