The next morning Regina dropped Henry and Emma off and school and went to Gold's shop. When she entered the bell above the door rang, and Rumple came limping out.
"Well hello Madam Mayor. What a surprise."
Regina rolled her eyes and said, "Cut the BS Gold. I am here to talk about Emma and your boy."
Rumple giggled and said, "I know, what a surprise. Lovely to have father and daughter reunited."
Regina growled and said, "He needs to stay away from her. I will not have Emma getting hurt when he decides to up and leave again."
Rumple narrowed his eyes and said, "That is where you are mistaken dearie, Avery is planning on staying right her. In Storybrooke."
Regina leaned on the counter and go extremely close to Rumple, "If he so much as comes near Emma without my permission I will have him arrested."
Gold leaned forward as well and sneered, "On what grounds, Madam Mayor?"
Regina smirked, "I'll think of something." She then stood up straight, turned on her heel and left the shop.
Gold narrowed his eyes and watched as Regina left and drove off. "Dearie you have no idea what you just walked into"
Avery was listening to his father and the mayor's conversation from the storage room. He knew that if his father took this too far he would lose Emma and would risk never seeing her again. That's when he decided. He was going to talk with Regina and work something out.
Avery worked in the shop with Rumple until lunch time. Gold decided to go home for lunch and asked Avery if he would like to accompany him.
Avery declined, "No thank you. I think I am going to grab something from the diner and walk around."
Gold nodded and said, "Alright. Well I will be back at the shop by 1:30"
Avery nodded and watched as Rumple walked home. When he was completely out of sight Avery locked the shop up and headed towards town hall.
Avery was sitting in the waiting room, waiting for Regina.
When Regina opened her door she spotted Avery sitting in the waiting room. Regina looked at her assistant with questioning eyes, but she just shrugged her shoulders, not knowing why Avery Gold was sitting in the waiting room.
Regina stepped in front of him and said, "Mr. Gold. What can I do for you?"
Avery swallowed and said, "I wanted to talk with you."
Regina rolled her eyes and said, "Obviously. What is it that you would like to discuss right now, and without your darling father?"
Avery licked his lips and said, "I wanna talk about Emma."
Regina narrowed her eyes and said, "My office now."
Avery nodded at Regina's assistant and headed towards Regina's office, trying to keep his cool under Regina's icy stare.
Regina watched as Avery went into her office, she looked at her assistant and told her, "Amanda go ahead and take your lunch break. Afterwards please call the schools and let them know I am going to be picking Emma and Henry up early."
Amanda nodded her head, grabbed her purse from under the desk, and quickly walked out of the building.
Regina waited until she heard the front door close, before going to her office to speak with Avery.
Avery was seated in the leather chair that was across from Regina's desk and was looking around.
Regina closed her office door and walked to her desk. She sat down and just stared at Avery. Avery gulped and started bouncing his leg and fidgeting with a loose string on his coat.
Regina grew irritated and finally asked, "Mr. Gold, you have interrupted my day and now you are wasting my time. You wished to speak about Emma. So speak."
Avery swallowed and cleared his throat, "Umm.. Yeah.. I just, I want.." Avery ran a hand through his hair and started over, "Ms. Mills, I didn't know about Emma until a the other day. Madison never, she never even told me she was pregnant. I don't.. I don't want her to think that I didn't want her. I just want her to know that."
Regina stared at Avery for a little longer before speaking. "Suppose you tell this to Emma, suppose she understands, then what?"
Avery blinked and scratched his head, "ummm... I didn't, I didn't think that far."
Regina nodded, leaned forward and placed her arms on her desk, "I see. Listen Emma has been through more than any little girl should. She doesn't need another person to walk into her life only to leave again. The fact that you haven't mentioned anything about being a part of Emma's life in the future tells me that you aren't planning on staying."
Avery sighed and said, "I get it, I'm not the dad that I should be. I didn't think everything through, but I don't want to be absent in her life. I just... I don't want to be my father. I don't want her to think that I didn't want her."
Regina sighed and said, "Look it is admirable what you want to do, but until you can show me that you don't plan on just disappearing, I don't want you anywhere near my family."
Avery looked back and Regina and asked, "Can I at least talk to her? Please?"
Regina sighed and said, "I will think about it. But take this as a warning, you or your father do anything behind my back and I will make sure you don't get within 100 feet of Emma."
Avery gulped and nodded.
Regina heard the front door open and close, signaling that Amanda was back from her lunch break. Regina stood up and straightened her skirt, "I have a few more things I need to finish up here. Mr. Gold." Regina extended her hand alerting Avery that it was time to go.
Avery stood and shook Regina's hand, "I really do want to be in her life"
Regina nodded and showed Avery to the door, "Good day Mr. Gold"
Avery left Regina's office and sullenly walked back to the shop.
Regina watched him walk away from her office window. Amanda knocked on Regina's door and said, "Madam Mayor, the schools say you can pick Emma and Henry up at any time"
Regina nodded and said, "Thank you; Amanda I am taking the rest of the night off. Please reschedule me meetings, and put anything that needs to be reviewed and signed on my desk."
Amanda nodded and left the office.
Regina gathered her things and went to pick up Henry then Emma.
Regina parked her car outside of the school, walked into the high school and walked up to the main office.
The secretary smiled as Regina entered, "Hello Ms. Mills, here to pick up Henry?"
Regina nodded and gave a small smile, "Hello Mrs. Arstein, yes I need to sign Henry out."
Mrs. Arstein nodded and handed Regina the clip board labeled sign out, and used the intercom to call Henry to the main office.
Regina filled out the paperwork and handed it back to Mrs. Arstein.
When Regina turned around Henry was waiting by the door with his backpack. Regina nodded and said a quick, "Have a good rest of the day" and went to go meet Henry.
Regina and Henry got into the car and headed to pick Emma up.
Henry kept looking at Regina and finally couldn't resist anymore, "Alright what is going on? Is something wrong? Did something happen to Emma? Grandma? Pap?"
Regina shook her head and parked outside of Emma's school, "No Henry, there is nothing wrong. I just, I needed to see both of you. Also I need to run an errand and I need both of you with me."
Henry nodded not completely liking that answer but accepted it anyway.
Regina followed the same process to sign Emma out but this time she had to go get Emma.
Regina quietly knocked on the classroom door and peaked her head in, she needed to be quiet since she was informed that it was the little one's nap time.
Mary-Margret quietly opened the door and let Regina in.
MM whispered, "Is something wrong?"
Regina shook her head and whispered back, "No I am just here to take Emma home."
MM nodded and pointed towards the back of the room under the window and said, "She is asleep over there."
Regina nodded, she then turned to MM and asked, "Could you please collect Emma's backpack and coat." MM nodded and turning to collect Emma belongings while Regina, as quietly as she could, maneuvered through the classroom around the sleeping children.
When she reached Emma she knelt down and smiled. Emma was laying on her side fast asleep and was softly snoring. Regina hated to wake her up, but figured it would be easier than trying to pick her up for such an odd angle.
Regina moved the hair from in front of Emma's face and gently stroked her cheek slowly rousing her from her sleep.
Emma groaned and tried to roll away but Regina just laughed and whispered, "Come on Emma, time to wake up."
Emma cracked an eye open and looked at Regina. Emma groggily and with a sleepy voice asked, "Mommy?"
Regina nodded and said, "Come on sleepy head time to wake up"
Emma yawned and sat up, she looked around and noticed everyone else still sleeping. Emma looked at Regina and groaned, Regina just smiled and laughed thinking that Emma looked and acted exactly like Henry when he was younger and was woken from a nap prematurely.
Regina gently rubbed Emma's back and said, "Come on, Henry is in the car waiting. We are going to run a few errands than have some fun."
Emma looked at her with a look that said And this couldn't wait until after my nap?
Emma yawned again looking like she was falling back asleep. But Emma just lifted her arms asking to be picked up.
Regina smiled and quickly lifted Emma, placing her on her hip. She could feel Emma sigh as she placed her head on Regina's shoulder. Regina rubbed Emma's back again and then maneuvered back to where MM was standing with Emma's backpack.
MM extended the backpack to Regina and smiled, "You are extremely lucky Madam Mayor."
Regina took the backpack and gave MM a smile, the first smile she had ever giving the other woman, and said "Yes, I am. I am extremely lucky."
MM smiled then focused her attention to Emma catching her sleepy gaze, "I will see you tomorrow Emma." Emma nodded and closed her eyes again.
Regina gave MM a nod and left.
Regina walked back to the car and signaled for Henry to help her.
Henry got out of the car and opened the trunk so she could put Emma's bag in. He then sat back down in the front seat and opened his arms so Regina could carefully pass Emma to him.
Emma groaned only slightly. Henry buckled them in but still held onto Emma's waist tightly.
Regina started the car and headed towards the town line. Henry asked, "Where are we going?"
Regina smiled and said, "Errands, then fun. Think of it like an adventure."
Henry smiled looked ahead, he couldn't remember the last time that he and his mom had fun or an adventure as she liked to call them.
Henry looked back at Regina and said, "let the fun begin!"
Regina smiled as she passed the sign that said Now leaving Storybrooke, please visit again and said, "Lets."
