Chapter 26: The Entertainment
"A helicopter?" I asked, after meeting Bruce on top of his own building that had a helicopter waiting on top of it. Bruce smirked smugly as I approached him with a shake of my head. "Really, we're meeting your people in a helicopter?"
"What'd you think?" He asked.
I shook my head. "You sure know how to make an entrance," I said as he helped me up into the helicopter.
"I thought we'd just come from a play in London," he said. "We had dinner, and discussed our marriage date."
"Oh," I said, feeling my cheeks flush a little, as I tucked my dress underneath me as I settled in. "That's a really good cover."
"Great," he said, and then quickly climbed into the helicopter next to me. We were running on the late side after all.
"I hope Rachel realizes what she's missing," I said. Bruce nodded next to me, like he agreed with what I said.
We finally made our way down to the penthouse's lobby and living room area, an open floor plan that could hold a party. I got out first onto the balcony, and then Bruce slid out beside me, holding my hand, and the other against my lower back, gently walking me into the crowd that was amazed by Bruce's entrance with the noisy helicopter, which finally left.
"Sorry, I'm late," he said. "I'm glad to see that you all got started without me. Now, where is Harvey Dent?"
Harvey Dent, a sandy blonde haired man came to the front of the crowd with Rachel Dawes in a beautiful green sequin dress by his side. She had her arms crossed and look of disappointment across her face.
"Where... Harvey Dent, the man of the hour. Where's Rachel Dawes? She is my oldest friend. Come here," Harvey came to the center of the room, as the crowd had seemed to move aside to give him his moment. "When Rachel first told me she was dating Harvey Dent, I had one thing to say: "The guy from those god-awful campaign commercials?"" Everyone chuckled. I gave a small smile. ""I believe in Harvey Dent." Yeah, nice slogan, Harvey. But it caught Rachel's attention. And then I started to pay attention to Harvey and all that he's been doing as our new DA. And you know what? I believe in Harvey Dent. I believe that on his watch, Gotham can feel... a little safer, a little more optimistic. Look at this face. This is the face of Gotham's bright future. To Harvey Dent. Let's hear it for him. Harvey."
Everyone clapped excitedly for him. I clapped too. Bruce excused himself from me, and I saddled up next to Gotham's Great Knight.
"You're Bruce Wayne's girlfriend aren't you?"
"Fiancé," I reminded him, showing him my ring that sparkled under the light.
"So, you think what he said about me was true?" he asked.
I nodded. "Of course. Bruce usually doesn't do something unless he truly believes in it, and one of them is you."
"That's comforting," Harvey said, rolling on the balls of his heels. Then he spotted Rachel outside with Bruce on the balcony.
"You love her don't you?" I asked, already sensing that he did. I could tell just by the way he looked at her.
"I do," Harvey said. "I asked her to marry me."
"Oh, well, that's exciting, what'd she say?" I asked.
"She didn't have an answer for me," he frowned. "Excuse me."
I nodded, and took a glass of champagne when a waiter came by me.
He walked outside to the balcony and grabbed Rachel by the arm, taking her inside. I did not blame Harvey one bit. He had some competition, and so did I, apparently.
Some of these people in the room I had no idea who they were. Some of them looked like friends and colleges from Wayne Enterprises. I glanced down at the fake engagement ring and twisted it slightly as I stood by, just watching everyone chatting. I looked over and saw Rachel and Harvey chatting for a bit.
"Just tell me it's not Wayne. The guy's a complete f…."
Bruce was nowhere to be found, until I suddenly saw him grab Harvey in a choke hold all of a sudden.
"What are you doing?" Rachel exclaimed hotly.
"They've come for him!"
"Stay hidden."
"Are you out of your mind?" I asked. I walked over towards them as he stuffed Harvey into a closet, locking it tight. Rachel and I both glanced at each other as we turned towards the Joker that suddenly came to the party, uninvited, announcing with a bang, causing everyone to scream and pause in their step.
The Joker's thugs walked around the circle that was made by the crowd, frozen scared to death as the Joker walked around, looking at everyone and their scared faces that included my own.
"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. We are... tonight's entertainment. I only have one question: where is Harvey Dent?" he grabbed my glass of champagne and tossed it out then drank the last bit of it. I froze, deeply terrified of his actions in front of me. I kept silent. I was too scared to move to do anything. I know I wasn't supposed to be afraid, but clowns really did scare me. He slapped my face and I screamed in shock.
"Do you know where he is?" he asked me and I shook my head, holding my hand to my face, shivering.
"You know where Harvey is? You know who he is?" he continued down the line of the guest's.
"Do you know where I can find Harvey? I need to talk to him. Just something little, huh?"
"You know, I'll settle for his loved ones," the Joker said.
"We're not intimidated by thugs," one of the Board members from Wayne Enterprises said. He was an older gentlemen of whom I knew very little of. Yet here he was so brave, braver than all of us right now.
"You know," the joker slammed the glass on the table. "You remind me of my father," he said, taking out his knife, ready to carve into his mouth. "I hated my father," he gripped the man's chin tight.
"Okay, stop," Rachel said, coming out into the limelight.
I widened my eyes. "Rachel," I whispered, shaking my head. She glared at me to stay put in my spot.
He spun around and skimmed his green hair with his gloved hand and skip-hopped over towards her. "Well, hello beautiful. And you are beautiful. Oh, you look nervous. Is it the scars? You wanna know how I got 'em? Come here. Hey. Look at me. So I had a wife. Beautiful, like you. Who tells me... I worry too much. Who tells me I ought to smile more... Who gambles and gets in deep… with the sharks. Hey. One day, they carve her face. We have no money for surgeries. She can't take it. I just wanna see her smile again. Hm? I just want her to know that I don't care about the scars. So... I stick a razor in my mouth and do this... to myself. And you know what? She can't stand the sight of me! She leaves. Now I see the funny side. Now I'm always smiling."
Rachel kicked the Joker in the groin, causing him to back away and laugh. "A little fight in you. I like that!"
"Then you're gonna love me," Batman had arrived, and started to kick him and the thugs down. The Joker grabbed Rachel and shot the window, causing glass to fall through the sky. He gripped her tight, and forcibly took her towards the edge of the window, like he was going to toss her out.
"Drop the gun," Batman said.
"Oh, sure. You just take off your little mask and show us all who you really are. Hm?"
"Let her go," Batman said.
"Very poor choice of words," the Joker said and then let Rachel go. She screamed bloody murder as Batman raced for her down the side of the building and landing on a car.
The Joker fleed the party, leaving everyone completely stunned, and scared. People wanted to go home after that, and I didn't blame them for the matter. Once the building was secure and there were no more thugs around, Alfred had cleaned everything up, and taken Harvey home.
I sat on the sofa, stunned myself and looked over as Bruce returned in his tux.
"Are you okay?" he asked.
I swallowed hard and looked at him, trembling. "I really hate clowns."
He chuckled. "Yeah, I know the feeling. Come on, it's late. We should go to bed, er, separate beds…."
"Right, yeah, no, I'm tired from the entertainment that was apparently coming tonight," I said, in regards to the Joker.
It wasn't that I just hated clowns though. I didn't do anything to stop him. Rachel did. Then again he almost killed her. But still. I was too scared to do anything, and what did that make me all of a sudden?
