Chapter 28: Mourning Commissioner Loeb
Back in the bat cave, I was doing Yoga, sitting with my legs crossed over my feet, doing some deep breathing, or at least trying to, while Bruce was working on his machinery. Alfred was in the bat cave with us as well when he said, "I'm not sure you made it loud enough, sir! Are you sure you can concentrate Mel?"
I smiled, "It's part of the training, Alfred. I'll get used to it."

I was in Mr. Fox's office when Coleman Reese came up to us, as we were going over some specs of the meeting. "Can I have a minute please?"
"Yes," I nodded.
Mr. Fox nodded at me for me to give Reese with his files in hand and sat down across from my director. I wondered what he wanted with him. I stayed outside the glass doors and headed back over to my desk.
It was only a few minutes but Reese got out of there quick like a scared little cat as he was when he walked in.
"Mr. Coleman?" I asked.
"Reese," I said again. "What's wrong?"
"N-nothing," he stammered. "Just…nothing. Sorry, I didn't mean to accuse Bruce Wayne of…."
"Being the Batman?" I asked with a chuckle. "It happens all the time, Reese. He's not. If he did? I'd notice it too," I said, sending him a wink, showing him my engagement ring as a reminder to him, as he walked back to his office.
I then walked back to Mr. Fox's office and sat across from him. "I can't believe he did that!"
"That was a close one, though," Mr. Fox said. "I think your cover is helping a lot. So, when's the happy couple getting married?"
"In the fall," I smirked at him.
He chuckled. "In the fall, very nice, Melanie."
"Thank you. Wedding invitations will go out soon. And of course you'll be invited."
"I'd expect nothing less to see a grand wedding," he grinned at me.
"Yeah, a grand wedding would be nice, but it'd also be nice to have some family around."
"Have you talked to Alfred yet?"
"Not yet. But I was hoping maybe there might be something in the archives?"
"Not sure that'd do you any good, Melanie, best look at the Foster Care system instead. There, you'll find answers."
"I sure hope so."

On the screen, Bruce had retrieved a thumbprint from a crime screen that had made Harvey Dent the Joker's next target.
"And there's the thumbprint he left when he pushed the round in the clip," Bruce said.
"I'll get you a copy. Mr. Wayne, did you reassign R&D?" Fox asked.
I turned my head towards him questionably as well. Bruce looked at me and then at Fox.
"Yeah. Government telecommunications project," Bruce replied.
"Wasn't aware we had any government contracts," said Fox.
"You know, Lucius, I'm playing this one pretty close to the chest," Bruce said, making me frown. He noticed, and winced slightly at that. I forced my frown to a small smile.
"Fair enough," Fox said. It was good enough for him; it was good enough for me.

Alfred and I were in the bat cave during Commissioner Loeb's mourning. Harvey Dent, Rachel Dawes, and Gordon would be there. I was keeping an eye on it as they viewed it on the screen from where I was sitting. Alfred sat next to me searching the databases as Bruce got out his red motorcycle, heading into the city.
"I've checked all the databases. There are four possible. Cross-reference the addresses. Look for Parkside, overlooking the parade," he said.
"I got one. Melvin White, 1502 Randolph Apartments. Aggravated assault, moved to Arkham twice," Alfred said.
I made a face, but turned to my screen. "All the cops are in position," I told him as he gave me nod before heading out. I was listening into the walky-talky that connected to Gordon's and his men on site, watching out for anything abnormally.
"What do you got on the roof?" Gordon asked through his walky-talky and to mine.
"We're tight, but frankly, there's a lot of windows up here."
The mayor was now up on the podium. "Commissioner Loeb dedicated his life to law enforcement and to the protection of his community. I remember when I first took office and I asked if he wanted to stay on as commissioner. And he said he would, provided I kept my politics out of his office. Clearly he was not a man who minced words, nor should he have been. A number of policies that he enacted as commissioner were unpopular. Policies that flooded my office with angry calls and letters..."
"Who's that?"
"What happened?" Batman's voice came over.
Alfred and I listened intently and watched what was happening.
"They took our guns. And our uniforms."
"And as we recognize the sacrifice of this man, we must remember that vigilance is the price of safety," the mayor continued.
"Stand by. Honor guard. Attention. Port arms. Ready! Aim! Fire!"
"Ready! Aim!"
"Ready! Aim!"
"Stay down! Don't move!" The gunshot shot through the crowd, making everyone scatter, hitting Gordon as he jumped to protect the mayor.
"Mr. Mayor. Get him out of here." Stephens said.
Harvey turned to Rachel. "I'll see you later.
"Why are you going back?"
"Get out of here."
I looked to Alfred worriedly, and he looked at me, as the walky-talky fizzled out, leaving us in the dark.
