Chapter 30: The Conference
"You don't have to be here," Bruce said as we slid in the back of the crowd at the press conference the next day.
I shook my head. He helped me when no one else did. Of course I had to be there for him when he turns himself in and be there by his side.
"You gave me something that no one else has ever given me," I said.
"And what's that?" he asked.
"You cared about me. You gave a damn about me," I said. "To some people that matters more. So, thank you."
Bruce nodded. "You're welcome. I think that's the first ever thank you."
I grinned. "Good. I'm glad I'm your first."
"Wouldn't have it any other way," Bruce said. I looked at him curiously. "You helped me too. I think Rachel's really coming around."
"Oh you do?" I asked.
"I kissed her last night," Bruce said. "She kissed back."
"Oh," I said, and tucked in a nervous piece of hair behind my ear. "Well, that's good. But what happens if you go to County?"
"I guess we'll figure it out as we go along," Bruce said.
"I guess," I said, not sure what will happen. Will they put him in County Jail or Arkham? Or both? I shivered at either thought. Neither was good.
I watched as Harvey Dent came up to the podium. Flashes all around him as reporters took in their notes. Harvey Dent looked like the spitting image of a great politician; one that Gotham sorely needed, a good politician, one who cared about the streets of Gotham. He looked at the crowd and I looked back at him, wondering what he was going to say.
"Ladies and gentlemen thank you for coming, I've called this press conference for two reasons. Firstly, to assure the citizens of Gotham that everything that can be done over the Joker killings is being done. Secondly, because the Batman has offered to turn himself in. But let's consider the situation. Should we give in to this terrorist's demands? Do we really think he's gonna...?"
"You'd rather protect an outlaw vigilante than the lives of citizens?" The reporter asked.
Harvey looked at the reporter. "The Batman is an outlaw. That's not why we demand he turn himself in, we're doing it because we're scared. We've been happy to let Batman clean up our streets till now."
"Things are worse than ever!" A civilian cried out.
"Amen!"
Harvey nodded. "Yes, they are," he said. "But the night is darkest just before the dawn. And I promise you, the dawn is coming. One day, the Batman will have to answer for the laws he's broken. But to us. Not to this madman."
"No more dead cops!" the police officer by me cried out. I cringed. I couldn't blame them for that.
"Yeah!"
"He should turn himself in! Come on!
"Where is he?"
"So be it," he said, glancing at each member of the crowd. "Take the Batman into custody."
"What? Is he here?"
"I am the Batman," Harvey said.
My jaw dropped and Bruce slowly sank beside me. Wait, what?
"What? Come on!"
The police put handcuffs on Harvey and took him away. I turned to Bruce. "What? What now?"
Bruce sighed. "I think I know where this is going. Come on. I need you to be my eyes and ears."
I nodded, and together we walked out of the conference room.
