Chapter 31: Pretty Close to the Chest
I got into his fancy silver car, and settled up real nice with my computer set up and headphones so that I could talk to him, while he took down the joker, helping Harvey through this transition. So far the joker has taken down a truck, and claimed it for himself, and already took out several cop cars downtown.
I was in the perfect spot, waiting for Bruce to show up as batman so we could talk and see eye to eye, hear exactly what they were hearing and I could repeat it back to him as he got to the tumbler.
"What the hell is that?" A police officer cired. "Obstruction ahead, obstruction ahead. Damn it. All units dirvet down onto Lower Fifth. I repeat, exit down. Exit down!"
Shit, I swore in my mind that was bad. "Hey friend, they're moving down below…." I shook my head.
"Lower fifth? We'll be like turkey's on thanksgiving!"
"You got that right," I murmured gently, typing into the cameras to make sure I got all angles as I watched the police force turn and go down to the lower streets.
"Jesus! Come on, get us out of here! Let's go!"
"Listen, we need backup. We've got company!"
"Yeah, yeah, hold your horses, the cavlari is on its way," I murmured. "Come on Bruce…"
"I can hear you," Bruce said. "I'm almost there."
"Good. Lower fifth. Hurry. It looks like the Joker's just arrived."
"Good," he said.
"Lock and load!"
"The hell was that?"
"These are built for that right?" Harvey asked as the truck he was in rattled against the mad fire power the joker was putting out.
I smirked at that. "Don't worry Harvey…." I whispered, though we were in totally separate vehicles. I pretended he could hear me.
"He'll need something a lot bigger to get through this," A SWAT member assured.
"What is that?"
"What is that, a bazooka?!"
"A what?" I panicked. "Bruce!"
"I'm coming," he said in a bit of a growl on the other end of my headphones.
"I didn't sign up for this! Look out, look out!"
"Hmmm," the joker said curiously.
"Come on, let's go!
"Harvey, Harvey, Harvey Dent. Oh, excuse me. I wanna drive," he claimed the truck, stealing the large 18 wheeler.
"He's got the truck now," I frowned.
"Scanning all systems. Scanning all systems," the tumbler said.
"You're not even out of the tumbler yet?!" I cried.
"Relax…." Bruce said. "I'll be out soon."
"We gotta get topside. We need air support now!"
"Yeah, I'm thinking the joker would like that a little too much," I said with a small frown.
"I like this job, I like it!" the joker cried, as he drove the truck behind Harvey's SWAT vehicle.
"Damage catastrophic. Eject sequence instead. Goodbye."
"We're on point, ready to give them some of their own medicine," One SWAT police member said.
"That's what I'm talking about. Air cav!"
"Okay, rack 'em up, rack 'em up!"
"Oh no, Bruce! He's too close," I cried, hearing the Joker through my headphones.
I watched in pure shock as the Joker's shot out long wires and wrapped them up in the air to stop the helicopter from going any further, and continued to fall into the nearest building breaking shards of glass instead.
"That's not good!"
"Okay, that's not good!"
"Oh my god," I cried. "Bruce!"
"Almost there," he said. And then he rolled the bike to face the Joker on the empty street.
"Now, there's a Batman," the joker said. I tilted my computer up so I could see them together in one camera window. Bruce was really pushing it.
"Ooh, you wanna play. Come on, come on," the joker growled. Bruce zoomed forward and twisted around him, shooting out wires of his own that got wrapped around light posts.
"He missed!"
"Are you sure about that?" I asked with a small smirk.
"You can't stop here. We're like sitting ducks!"
"Come on, come on, come on, come on I want you to do it. I want you to hit me. Hit me!" the Joker managed to get Bruce onto his back.
"No…" I whispered in shock.
"Hit me!" But Bruce never gave in, and trapped the Joker instead with Gordon stopping him from behind. "Could you please just give us a minute?" He held up his hands, and his knife in the other.
"We got you, you son of a bitch," Gordon said, pointing a gun at his head that made the Joker just stop and give in.
I sighed, relaxed after that intense moment, and leaned my head back against the soft leather seat.
"Gor…you do like to play things pretty close to the chest," Harvey said, getting out of the SWAT vehicle.
"We got him, Harvey," Gordon said proudly. Reporters poured through.
"Mr. Dent! How does it feel to be the biggest hero in Gotham?"
"No, I'm no hero. Gotham's finest, they're the heroes." He said, which made me smile about him even more. He really was a hero.
"But you and your office have been working with the Batman all along?"
"No, but I trusted him to do the right thing," Harvey said.
"Bold," I commented lightly.
"Or very stupid," he said. "He could've been killed."
"He wasn't. Because of you," I reminded Bruce over my headset.
"Which was?" the reporter asked.
"Saving my ass," Harvey said that made everyone chuckle, including myself as I watched on my laptop in the car.
Then I spotted another detective, I have yet to meet. "All right people. That's enough. Let him be, let him be."
"Thank you, detective. I've got a date with a pretty upset girlfriend," Harvey said.
"I figured, counselor."
"Uh, Mr. Dent? Can I have a picture for the newspaper?"
I pressed my lips to the side curiously at that and turned off the computer, since it was over. "Are you sure our cover of being together for Rachel is working?"
"Yes, I felt it last night," he said over the headset.
"You may have felt it. I don't know, I just wouldn't want to get in between a relationship like they have, Bruce," I said. "It seems serious."
"She said she'd wait for me," Bruce whispered.
"Can you really ask her to do that for you though?" I asked.
"Would you wait for me if it were the other way around, and I liked you the way I like Rachel?"
I sighed, considering it for a moment. "I see your point." And then my heart ached, a dull ache, one that suddenly yearned for something more than what I have now.
