Chapter 33: The Caller
I got up the next day, brushing my teeth, and getting ready, wearing jeans and a black long sleeve top. I pulled my hair into a messy bun for the day and wore boots underneath my jeans. I pulled out my half heart necklace, which I found in my family's manila folder. I'd been reading that most of my family was gone. I wasn't having much luck with finding my parents either. I hoped that one day I'd find someone with the other half of my necklace. Maybe then I can finally have a family and things would be safe again. Was I being too optimistic? I wasn't sure. But when I walked into the living room to see Alfred standing and watching the news, I realized maybe I was being too optimistic.
Mike Engel was on GT. It was an interview with Reese.
"He's credible, an M&A lawyer from a leading consultancy. He says he's waited as long as he can for Batman to do the right thing. Now he's taking matters into his own hands. We'll be live at 5 with the true identity of the Batman."
"And there is one person I'd one day like to interview," Mike said to Reese.
"Oh yeah and who is that?"
"Melanie Blake, the old actress from the papers. She was with the billionaire Bruce Wayne. In fact, you told me once she used to work with him in Wayne Enterprises, is that correct?"
"I believe she still does as an archivist."
"Yes, yes, I'd love for her input on the Batman! How can she live at the same time that there's murder on the streets?!"
"Right? Always an interesting question. How can anyone live when there's some hideious thing going on such as that? Can you get her on the show?"
"I'll try to get her to sing," Reese chuckled.
I tightened my fist together. "Damn it," I muttered.
"Didn't see that coming did you?" Alfred asked.
"No, I did not," I sighed. "I hid in the shadows long enough. If he wants an interview, I'll give it to him."
Then as if like magic, my cell phone rang. "Hello? Melanie Blake."
"Ah, Melanie Blake. This is Reese. Remember me?"
"I sure do," I said over the phone. "I don't quite appreciate this approach but if you want an interview, fine. A quick interview we can do together."
"Thank you! I truly appreciate it," he said. "Just wanted your status on the Batman. You haven't truly given us your opinion."
"Oh, I'm sure," I said. "No I haven't."
"It's just that you're a citizen of Gotham, surely you must have concerns about our Harvey Dent,"
"I do."
"Great!"
"Great."
"And now my interview is over," I said. "That's all the time I have today. Enjoy the rest of your day."
I hung up the phone and he seemed to look bewildered on the TV screen. I chuckled at that and Alfred smirked. "Well played," He said.
"Thank you. I learn from the best," I grinned at that.
"Well, at least it was an input. Let's take the next caller."
"Harvey Dent didn't wanna give in to this maniac. You think you know better?" the caller said.
By the time he asked, Bruce had come into the room, and sat down beside me.
"I think that if we could talk to Dent today, he may feel differently," Reese replied.
"And we wish him a speedy recovery. Because God knows, we need him now."
"Who is this?" Mike asked on the other line. Alfred and I looked at each other gravely.
"I had a vision... of a world without Batman. The Mob ground out a little profit and the police tried to shut them down one block at a time. And it was so... boring. I've had a change of heart. I don't want Mr. Reese spoiling everything, but why should I have all the fun?"
Poor Reese looked terrified.
"Let's give someone else a chance. If Coleman Reese isn't dead in sixty minutes, then I blow up a hospital."
