Chapter 35: The Bait

By the time my head hit the pillow, I'd known the plan. The plan was to act dumb. Bruce was sleeping by my side. It'd look weird if we were sleeping in a separate bed when someone would come in and break into a house. They'd broken in before, I'm sure they could do it again.

I wondered why I was being called out by the clown. I wanted to ask Bruce, but then I stopped, tensing at the sound of something what it heard like the door was opening. Alfred was told not to do anything and just sleep the night away, staying hidden of course. This was it. This was the moment I'd waited for.

Someone was coming to collect me.

I tensed, curling up against Bruce's side. I turned to face him and he faced me. I tried to keep silent.

"It's going to be okay," Bruce whispered to me.

I nodded. I looked down at my silk nightgown, wondering if I should've kept my regular clothes on, but then realized they'd know something would be up.

I heard thudded footsteps against the floors. Two men were coming up to the penthouse, breaking and entering. They weren't stealing anything else. Their mission was to steal me.

The door was kicked open, making me jump a bit. Bruce closed his eyes and rolled over onto his back. I closed my eyes and rolled over onto my back, trying to slow my breathing down as best as I could.

The footsteps crept closer until I suddenly felt a pair of hands on me, making me scream out loud. Involuntarily, I kicked my leg towards my capturer who stumbled back. But the other grabbed my wrists and held my legs down, waking up Bruce. Bruce shot up, but my capturer punched him in the face, "knocking" him out. I cried out in alarm, only to be met with a type of cloth that smelt sweet and yet bitter at the same time. I closed my eyes and felt limp.

Chloroform.

"Ah you brought our little Heart of Gotham to me," I heard the Joker spat as I slowly started to wake up. "Excellent and did he you know…"

"He tried, but it was barely a hit," the goon replied. "He's not our guy."

"Huh. I thought for sure he was," the Joker said. "This is gonna be a lot tougher than I thought."

"Where do you want her?"

"I'll take her," the joker said. The goon handed me towards him and then I suddenly felt dragged outside the window, wrapping my hands tight around bars with tape and putting something in my hands. "I will find your precious Batman that you've grown to respect so much. I know he'll come."

"And if he does?" I whispered, slowly waking up groggily. "You better pray he's good to you."
