Chapter 37: The Dark Knight

I paced back and forth after Alfred stitched me up. I had the letter sitting on the coffee table in the living room. I was waiting for him to arrive. I hoped he got to Harvey in time. I hoped that everything was going to be okay, but from the moment I saw him walking in, trudging in, I realized it was anything but okay. He had his cowl in his hand, and he was just wearing his suit.

"It's over," he said.

"And Harvey?"

"Died a hero," he replied.

I frowned. "What happened?"

"He tried to take down Gordon and his family for Rachel's death," he whispered.

My stomach tightened. "I'm so sorry. Gordon's okay, isn't he?"

"He is. His family is fine. And, it's done," he shrugged. "He won't be remembered as a two-faced son of a jackal. He'll be remembered what he stood for. Gotham's White Knight. Tonight Batman took quite a hit. And he'll now be stuck in his batcave forever."

"Not forever I hope," I said. "Listen. What you did tonight was very brave. I'm proud of you. You should be too. Look…there's something that uh, Alfred and I wanted to share with you. It's from Rachel. She said to give it to you when the time was right and I think that time is now. It's over after all."

Bruce looked up from the ground. "What is it?"

"It's a letter," I said, walking over to the coffee table. I picked it up and I handed it to him.

He turned it over. Not sealed.

"I'll um…I'll go to bed," I said.

"Wait, can you stay with me?" Bruce asked.

"Are you sure?" I asked.

"Yes, please," he nodded.

I licked my lips and watched him sit over in a chair and I sat across from him. "I'll stay here all night."

"Thank you," he said and started to read Rachel's letter. Once he was finished I could've sworn tears were going to come out of his eyes, but he didn't cry. He sat there in silence.

We sat there in silence. It was over. And I wasn't sure what was going to happen next. I turned on the GNC news and laid back to listen to what they were saying about Batman's whereabouts. It was really over.

I turned down the volume. "So what are you now?"

"A watchful guardian," he whispered.

"Then that's what I'll be too," I promised. He arched an eyebrow at me. "You asked me to stay. I'm staying."

He smiled gently at that, but frowned at my scars on my neck He reached over for my hand, threading his fingers through mine, a much needed warmth that I hadn't felt in so long.
