Chapter 39: Peace Time
The Wayne Foundation had put on a party for Harvey Dent Day. Alfred and the staff of the Wayne Manor definitely did a good job with everything. I was checking out our staff members once again.
"Mel, will you stop that? Everything's going quite smoothly," Alfred said. "I'm glad you decided to show up tonight."
"I know, I know. I just have a sneaky feeling…."
"What?" Alfred asked.
Something wasn't right. I wasn't sure what it was. I looked up at the East Wing, half expecting to see a shadow there beyond the dark windows. I did see some kind of movement in the dark.
Commissioner Gordon came up beside me and smiled. "Hello Miss Blake," he greeted.
I smiled back. "Commissioner."
"You know there's a John Blake on the force, any relation?" he asked.
I shrugged. "I'm not sure. I grew up in the foster care system so it's all I know," I said.
He grinned slightly. "He grew up in the foster care system too. At a boy's club."
"So, how are you this evening?" I asked, wanting to change the subject about family.
"I'm quite well thank you. Thank you for this."
"Oh don't thank me," I said, motioning a quick nod to the manor. His smile faltered. "Melanie, is everything all right?"
"Yes. We're fine. He's just not feeling well," I said.
He nodded. "Well, time for my speech," he said. I looked around the crowd outside the courtyard. I saw Foley talking with someone probably spreading rumors. Even the maids had their own feelings about how I was better off dating Leonardo DiCaprio rather than Bruce Wayne. "The truth…" he said and I glanced at him curiously about that.
He turned toward the audience.
"I have a speech telling the truth about Harvey Dent. Maybe the time isn't right," he said, putting it in his jacket pocket.
"Maybe right now, all you need to know is that there are one thousand inmates in Blackgate Prison as the direct result of the Dent Act. These are violent criminals, essential cogs in the organized crime machine," he said. Maybe, for now, all I should say about the death of Harvey Dent is this; it has not been for nothing."
"Here, here," I said raising my glass towards him and clapped. The rest of the crowd around me clapped as well. I could see eyes of the blue cops around me and I tried to ignore it.
I walked out of the crowd and headed towards the kitchen and up the stairs ready to go yell at Bruce for not being here tonight when all of a sudden I heard someone cracking into a safe. I was very keen on getting my crossbow off the hook and shoot at the person who was robbing us. I peeked around the corner that led to the east wing and stopped short. It was a girl. Brown haired girl hacking into the safe. She took out something. A string of pearls and wrapped them around her neck. I gawked at her. I was struck by her that a lowly maid could just do something like this. Then that's when it hit me. I aimed the cross bow and fired at her when she was examining the two arrows stuck in a target.
"Oh! Miss Blake! I'm so sorry, I'm so terribly sorry…was it a Miss Blake was it?"
"Save it," I hissed at her, aiming for her neck. "What do you want?"
"Soon to be Mr. and Mrs. Wayne actually," Bruce said behind me. My heart stopped beating as he came out of his room on his walking cane.
"Although you don't have long nails or facial scars, sir," she coughed. "And you're clearly not breaking up anytime soon."
I narrowed my eyes at her. "Clearly not."
"Is that what they say about us?" Bruce asked.
I closed my mouth tight. It was.
"It's just that no one ever sees you," she said.
"I turned up for this event," I said to her.
"For like five seconds," the maid said. "And then you disappear into shadow."
Why did I have a feeling she wasn't even a real maid? Oh right because I caught her stealing from us.
"That's a beautiful necklace," Bruce commented on the pearls she was wearing. "It reminds me of one that belonged to my mother. It can't possible be the same one, cause her pearls are in the safe."
He opened the safe. "The manufacturer clearly explained it is uncrackable."
"Oops," she said. "Nobody told me it was uncrackable. Look you wouldn't beat up a woman, anymore than I would beat a cripple," she then kicked the cane out from underneath him, making him fall. I tried to grab him and help him off.
"Of course sometimes exceptions happen," she said.
She climbed up out of the window. I aimed my crossbow at her, ready to shoot. "You won't shoot me darling. You're the Heart of Gotham, Mrs. Wayne. Every girl's dream. It's not in your character. Good night." She said and then flipped out over and off the window sill lost into the night.
I sighed, and placed the crowbar down, rushing to help him up. "Are you okay?" I asked.
"Yeah, never better," he groaned as he pushed himself up off the floor.
"I'm gonna need to get those pearls back," Bruce said.
"I'll help you," I said. "By the way when you said Mr. and Mrs.?"
"I guess we still have an image to maintain, don't we?"
"I guess so," I said softly.
"Can't have cat burglars coming in thinking they own the place," Bruce said.
"No, we can't," I said when he gave me a slight nudge against my chin, making me smile.
"By the way, you look stunning in black."
I smiled even more.
