Chapter 40: Print Dust

I leaned against the console table, arms crossed, watching Bruce examine the prints this cat burglar left behind when Alfred walked in after the event, and everyone cleared out.

"Miss Tate was asking to see you again," Alfred said.

I scowled. Miss Tate. That was it. I didn't trust her. There was something about her I didn't like. But I was also right that there was a maid who didn't even belong on our staffing list.

"She's very persistent," Bruce said.

"And quite lovely, in case you were wondering," Alfred said.

"I wasn't," Bruce said, distracted by the prints on the safe. "I prefer a quieter clientele."

"Nothing against Melanie," Alfred said. "Just a really rather long relationship."

"Tell me about it," I muttered.

"You two can exchange notes over coffee on how I deal with things," Bruce said, not missing the tones between Alfred and I. We backed off.

"What are you doing?" Alfred asked.

"Examining print dust, we've been robbed," Bruce said.

"And this is your idea of uh…sounding the alarm, is it?"

"She took the pearls, tracking device and all," Bruce replied.

"She?" Alfred asked.

"One of the maids," Bruce said.

"Told you," I whispered to Alfred who gave me a startled look. I shrugged. I followed my gut these days.

"Perhaps you should stop letting them in this side of the house," Bruce said.

"Perhaps you should start learning to make your own bed," Alfred quipped.

"Why were you dusting for prints?" Alfred asked.

"I wasn't," Bruce said. "She was."

I followed Bruce down to the bat cave, and spotted a manila folder next to the computers. I sighed. I walked over and picked it up.

"That the folder Alfred gave you?" Bruce asked.

I nodded. "John Blake."

"We can look him up on the database," Bruce nodded towards his computer.

"You think I should?" I asked.

"Might help," Bruce suggested. "Here, let's look for, what was her name that she gave?"

"There was no name," I said. "That was the interesting part of the list. We had one extra maid that seemed off to me. I didn't think she was going to steal anything."

"Well, she did, but that's okay, we'll get them back," Bruce said.

He sat in his chair and drew in the database files.

I sighed and sat in my own chair, placing the folder back on the table. I didn't know what to do at this rate.
