Disclaimer: I do not own the Dark Knight trilogy, just my OC.
A/n: Hey all, here's a new update! Enjoy! Thank you for the follows, favorites, and the reviews. So, I am contemplating on writing a new story. I realized Gordon is an underrated character and I've grown to love him in the Dark Knight Rises, along with Officer Blake. So, I may write a new story involving them. :)
Chapter 43: He Must
The car ride to the hospital was an interesting one. I told him that we were related and somehow the orphanage mixed us up, and that's how we got separated. My real mother died in a car crash, and my real father died for gambling debt issues. It took me some time to contemplate on the information at my hands. We showed each other our necklaces. He wore his like a bracelet. They matched half and half of a heart.
We went to the hospital and walked inside, looking for Commissioner Gordon.
"So, why the bag?" John asked.
"I…kind of told him how I really felt."
"But I thought you two were…."
"Oh, we were, but that was just a façade. It was a cover. His true feelings for the fallen District Attorney Rachel Dawes always seemed to linger, even with the letter that was shown to him that she'd moved on. I thought he had moved on. I told him my true feelings for him because over time I had grown to love him. I thought he liked me back, but he was just as bewildered as the news given to him. We thought that our relationship for the public would help stray people away from finding out the true Batman, and would eventually make Rachel Dawes jealous and realize her true feelings for him, but she loved Harvey Dent and was going to marry him."
"So, why didn't you tell him how you truly felt then?" he asked.
I blinked at that question. That was a good question. I had wondered that myself. I wondered if I waited too long to tell him.
"Because I was afraid," I whispered. "I liked what we had. I helped him from time to time on the streets. I'm not a very good fighter, John, but I'm good with some technology and filing. Yes. Those are my two strengths. I worked at Wayne Enterprises in the archives. It was once my dream to help others in Gotham the way Gotham had given me a family. It wasn't much, and they may have come from the foster care system, they were still family. Liz was my family and I lost her to the clown. The clown then tortured me and for years I had nightmares. I couldn't leave Wayne Manor once it was built. I was too scared to go out. And then finally with the Dent Act secured, it got a little better. Until she came along."
"She?"
"We'd been robbed."
"And did you tell the police?" John asked.
I half-snorted. "Right. Tell the police. That was a good one. I did have a powerful friend you know who deals in that sort of thing."
"What was missing?" John asked.
"His mother's pearls," I replied. "A cat burglar no less. I could've stopped her, but I didn't."
"Why didn't you?"
"I think I wanted the Batman to come back," I said. "Part of me still missed working with him during those nights on the streets, protecting our friend Rachel Dawes. Oh, and yes, I was jealous. A little jealous. I tried to combat that with my feelings that would pop up here and there. I really did like Rachel and wouldn't want anything bad to happen to her, wouldn't wish it on my own worse enemy. Anyway, so now, we're taking a break."
"Does he know that?" John asked.
"He should know," I said. "I resigned my duties. And I was set to see the world."
"You weren't going to come find me?" John asked.
"Thought had crossed my mind, but I figured you'd be busy." I said. "And well, I was scared too. I wasn't sure what you were like."
"And now?"
I smiled. "I'm glad I met you, John."
"It's nice to know I've got family now. I like having a big sister." John said.
"Really?" I asked.
"Really," he said. He opened the door for me. "Commissioner Gordon. Melanie Blake is here to see you. I gotta get back. If you need anything just call me, all right?"
He and I exchanged numbers, and went off back to the station.
"Thank you, John," I said.
"Thank you," he said and then before he left he gave me a quick hug. I waved bye to him and closed the door.
"Commissioner," I said, placing my bag down by a nearby chair. "How are you feeling?"
"Like I'd been shot," he replied. "Just Melanie tonight? To what I owe the pleasure?"
"I just wanted to see how you were doing," I said.
"Hanging in there," he replied.
"I'm taking off," I said.
"Leaving?" he was shocked.
"It's time," I said. "There was never anything for Gotham for me anyway."
"Yes there was," he said. "Bruce Wayne."
I laughed a little. "I don't think there's going to be a fall wedding any time soon."
"Well, I'm sorry to hear that," he sounded sincere.
"You and everybody else."
"We really hoped you two would hit it off. You were so good between each other. What happened?"
I guess we did make an impact being the happy couple followed by the press everywhere we went.
"It's a long story. But first, how'd you get shot?"
"It's a long story," he said, giving me a small smile. "You first. If you don't mind staying for a couple hours. I could use a friend."
"Okay," I nodded. At this rate, maybe I did too.
So I told him what I just told John in the car and on the way to the hospital, keeping the Batman's secret of his duel lives of course. But I did tell Gordon the truth of why we were a couple in the first place. A hope that he and Rachel would get together.

I woke up startled slightly by the sound of Bruce walking in the room with a ski mask covered over his head. I gawked at him but he placed a finger on his lips. I nodded and just kept my eyes closed. He took a seat to sit beside Gordon's bedside.
"We were in this together. Then you were gone," the commissioner said.
"The Batman wasn't needed anymore. We won," Bruce informed.
"Based on a lie. And now this evil rising from where we tried to bury it. The Batman has to come back," Gordon explained desperately.
"What if he doesn't exist anymore?" Bruce asked, making me frown.
Gordon wasn't having it. "He must. He must."
He got up to leave. "He must," I whispered, making him stop and we stared at each other, our gazes heated from across the room. I nodded. I was going to stay in Gotham and help if what Gordon said was true and from what he told me, there was a man named Bane down in the sewers, and he needed to be stopped. But I wasn't quite sure what I could do to help.
