Chapter 44: Batman Returns
When he left, Gordon looked over at me. I slouched in my chair, looking out the window.
"What are you doing here?" Gordon asked in a soft whisper.
"I'm here to keep you company, Commissioner. I've got nothing better to do."
"You should talk to Mr. Wayne," he said. "I'm sure he'll understand."
I scoffed. "Right. I really don't want to intrude on his reclusive vacation."
"Well, I certainly don't want you to become a recluse, Melanie," he said.
"I won't," I promised. "Besides, I'm sure Mr. Wayne has better things to do than talk to me right now. You should rest up. I'll alert you if anything comes up."
He just nodded at me, and closed his eyes.

The nurse had come in with Gordon's food. I helped him eat while we watched GCN with the TV announcer going on later in the evening the next day. I had to do a double take myself as I sat there and watched silently at what she was saying.
"People aren't saying much, frankly, they're too busy, but all signs suggest of what we're seeing is, in fact, the return of the Batman."
We watched the police circle the Batman on his bike, while the announcer on the TV in the room continued.
"Police are keeping quiet about the prospect of a return by the Batman, but eye witnesses accounts seem the clearly suggests the type of…"
Gordon and I shared a small smile between one another.

My cell phone rang, waking me up suddenly from my slumber.
"Hello?" I asked.
"Oh good, you're still here," it was Bruce.
"Yeah, I guess, what do you need?"
"I'd like you to come to the board meeting this morning," Bruce said.
"What? No. I'm not needed for a board meeting, Bruce, especially since I already handed in my resignation letter to Fox."
"You did?"
"Yes, I'm sorry Bruce, I know I said I'd help, but I can't. Fox told me about the reactor, and then I decided to quit."
"I wasn't going to turn it on," Bruce said.
"Oh," I frowned, sitting up right. I looked over at a sleeping Gordon on his hospital bed. "Well, I'm rather busy, taking care of Commissioner Gordon. He doesn't have anyone else, Bruce."
"I don't have anyone else," he said.
"You have Alfred."
"He left me," he said. "I need you."
My heart clenched at that. I needed him too, but right now just didn't seem like the right time. I poured out my feelings for him and then nothing.
"Did you finally talk to Ms. Tate?" I asked curiously.
"Yes," he said. "But it's strictly business. You…you're the one I want to share the world with."
"I can't," I whispered. "I'm sorry," I said and hung up. I glanced over at Gordon and sighed. I wasn't sure if he was being genuine or sincere. He seemed like it, but then again he'd been up and about, and I haven't. I wasn't sure I trusted Ms. Tate. Not at all.
