Months flew by quickly for everyone. Carmelita and Skylar were adjusting well to Sly being back, but Silvester still kept his distance. He felt…still uneasy…being around his father. He wasn't used to having a male figure in his life besides his uncle, as all of his teachers had been women and of course his mother. Sly knew this, but could not really understand why his son was the way he was. He often wondered where he even came from, as he wasn't like him at all and he wasn't much like Carmelita, if anything he was more like Bentley.
Silvester was in their room playing on his computer in peace until he heard a loud knock on the door. "Come in." He stated firmly. Sly slowly answered the door to Silvester's surprise. He looked over at the clearly uneasy raccoon and frowned. "I'm playing a game." He harshly said.
Sly finished opening the door and frowned. "Well, that was rude. I just wanted to say hello and ask how your day was."
Silvester looked over at his father and dropped his head, looking back at his computer. "I'm sorry." He quietly murmured.
Sly walked over to him. "I noticed things are still awkward between us, which I get you know. It must be really strange for you and your sister to just magically have your dad back." He chuckled a bit and placed his hand on his son's shoulder. "Look, Sil…Silver, that's right. Silver, you're my son. I wish I could just go back and change all of this but I can't. I'm really trying here."
Silvester looked over at his father and sighed. "I'm sorry. I just…I have trust issues okay?" Silvester threw his computer mouse against the wall which made a loud thud. "How do I know you aren't just going to think I'm a weirdo? Everyone else does and makes fun of me." He started to cry a bit remembering all the kids who regularly make fun of him at school.
Sly laughed a bit at this statement. "Weirdo? I don't think you're a weirdo at all! In fact, you're the coolest little dude I've ever met!"
Silvester looked up at Sly and wiped his tears from his eyes. "Are you being serious?"
"Of course! You seem extremely smart. Your mom just goes on and on about how good your grades are and how much you help your sister." He kneeled down to his son's level and looked him in his eyes. "If anything, you're way cooler than me."
Silvester awkwardly grinned a little hearing this. He still had no idea how to handle his father being a thief, thinking similarly how his mother thinks. He knew Sly only stole from other thieves, but it sometimes bothered him. He seemed mixed on the subject. One side of him believes his father is in the right and is a hero and the other side believes his father is a bad guy for stealing. "This is going to sound weird, but I just don't know how to feel. I'll be honest, I feel the same way about my sister. Stealing is wrong, right? But why does one part of me tell me it's okay? I know mom would never believe it is okay, she always told us we were going to jail if we steal."
Sly sighed, thinking carefully about how he was going to respond. "Well, your mother is right, however have you ever heard of the story called Robin Hood?"
Silvester thought for a moment but shook his head no.
"Well, Robin Hood is a story about a thief that stole from the rich and gave to the poor. Well, kind of. If I remember the story, I think the king in the story raised taxes so high that Robin Hood had to steal to give to the people who were very poor and had no means in paying the king. So, in your opinion, do you think Robin Hood is a good guy, or bad guy?"
Silvester thought on that question for a while. When Sly had put it that way, it really got him thinking about his stance on everything that was going on. Should Robin Hood have stolen? No, but if he hadn't the poor would have continued to starve and the kind would have continued to get his way. It was a tricky question. "No, I guess not." He replied. "He helped the poor and saved his land."
Sly smiled. "Yeah, he did, and I guess you can say the same about myself and my family. I don't steal for the fun of it, well maybe I did a time or two to mess with your mother but I never just like robbed a bank for the fun of it. That's wrong. What I did was steal from other guys who wanted to hurt others." Sly stood silent, trying to remember any stories he could share with his son. "Oh, there was this one time where this evil woman stole something called the Clockwerk eye."
"Clockwerk eye?" Silvester sat up and crossed his legs, very attentive to what Sly was now saying. "Who is Clockwerk?"
"That's a very long story." Sly laughed. "I'll have to tell you about him later. Anyway, long story short he was a robotic bird who was extremely powerful. He was immortal but his parts ended up being scattered around for other thieves to take. This one woman, her name was Contessa, stole the eye and hypnotized her prisoners for them to do what she wanted! You should even ask your mother about her, she has some choice words for the Contessa. Anyway, I stole the eye back. It wasn't mine, yes, but I saved a lot of innocent people from being hypnotized by her to do who knows what. So, if I might ask, and answer honestly I will not hate you whatever you say, does stealing that eye make me a bad guy?"
"Of course not!" Silvester quickly answered. "What a horrible woman! I'm glad you stopped her! Who knows what would have happened if she had kept that eye. How come the police didn't stop her?"
"Well, sadly little guy she WAS the police. Your mother had to work under her at one point. But thankfully, she can't harm anyone else as she is…well hopefully…still in prison."
Silvester quickly started to feel bad about thinking the way he did about his father. He couldn't really say the same for Skylar, as she really just stole for the fun of it. He still felt guilty about the heists he helped her with, but Sly telling his story made Silvester feel more at ease. Stealing that artifact wasn't so bad, and it was returned in the end. It saved their father. Stealing the Thievius Raccoonus wasn't so bad, if they hadn't they would've never known the truth about their father. He also understood why their mother felt the way she felt. It's tricky because technically it's against the law, but maybe sometimes the law isn't always the answer. Cops work hard to try to catch thieves and learn their ways, but another thief catching another thief isn't hard at all. It's similar to a company hiring a hacker to protect them from other hackers. Sure, hacking is illegal and wrong, but you can't win if you bring a knife to a gunfight. Sometimes, to be someone you have to BECOME that someone. "I'm really sorry." Silvester looked down in shame. "I guess I never would have thought of it like that."
Sly smiled. "Don't worry about it. You're just like your mother." He laughed thinking about all the times Carmelita tried to catch him, but of course she had proven she could've caught him if she wanted to. "She believes the law is the law, which isn't a bad thing you know. We need officers like her because the real criminals cannot excuse their behavior with her so easily."
"I would like to be an officer when I grow up." Silvester smiled. "I always admire mom's work. It seems she could bust whoever she wants! But it seems here lately there is no room to break the law, you know? It seems just everywhere lately has no exceptions to any sort of laws. So, let's say Skylar stole from the government who was actively stealing, she'd still go to jail even if it was a good thing. Mom explained all of this, I'm sorry if this isn't making sense." Silvester struggled putting his sentence together, as he usually did.
Sly grew confused. "Huh?"
"I don't really get it either." Silvester sighed. "Mom just doesn't want us to go to jail."
Sly was still confused on what Silvester was talking about. He remembered all the times he was spared by other cops because of his help, so was Silvester saying that has changed? Sly decided to lock this question in for Carmelita or Bentley later. He figured maybe they could clear up some stuff. He remembered Bentley mentioning the prisons had gotten a whole lot harsher, but he still couldn't really understand what exactly was going on when it came to the law. "You mind if I call you Jr?" He randomly asked.
Silvester perked his head up. "Why? I'm not really like you."
Sly smiled reassuringly. "Sure you are. I'm your dad, aren't I? Come on, let me call you Jr. You're a Jr to me!"
Back at Bentley's house, Bentley obsessively was trying to figure out just what had been going on in Egypt. Since their rescue of Sly's ancestor, Slytunkhamen II, they only found out that a mysterious suited man showed up randomly in Egypt and started to build corporate buildings everywhere. Slytunkhamen wasn't able to explain much after being rescued since he was sitting in jail the entire time. Bentley also learned upon Slytunkhamen II's rescue, Slytunkhamen I was still very much alive. Slytunkhamen I created the Thievius Raccoonus, but on their visit Slytunkhamen II explained his father was sick and dying inside one of the palaces. The gang was unable to locate him, but Slytunkhamen II insisted he would take care of his father in the meantime.
Murray, who was sitting at the kitchen table enjoying some pizza rolls, looked over and noticed Bentley obsessively reviewing his notes. Murray knew if Bentley was doing this it was never a good sign. "Hey, Bentley. What are you up to?"
Bentley continued to review his notes. "Not much. I'm just trying to piece this whole puzzle together. Why on earth were those buildings in Egypt? I'm afraid we're experiencing whatever is happening there right here in Paris."
Murray had no idea what Bentley was talking about, not like he ever really had an idea of whatever Bentley talked about. He took another bite from his pizza roll, trying to figure out how he could comfort his clearly distressed friend. "I don't know what you mean. Is Paris in trouble or something?"
Bentley folded up his notes and hid them in a pouch on his wheelchair. "Well, sort of yes. A few years ago this mega corporation called Megacorp just randomly showed up and took over. I thought it was weird then, but then we started to get other companies showing up in the same way. Now, I'm suspecting there is more than just providing multiple services."
Murray just shook his head and continued to eat his pizza rolls. A loud knock was soon being heard from the door, so Bentley decided to wheel over and answer it. "Oh, hello Penelope." He greeted. Penelope and Bentley were finally starting to be able to be comfortable around each other once again. Carmelita had even removed Penelope's ankle tracker just a few weeks prior.
"Hey Bentley." She smiled. "How are things going in here?"
Bentley sighed. "Well, I guess okay. I'm just having issues trying to figure out what we saw in Egypt. I know I told you about this."
Just as Bentley was finished saying this, Murray looked over to the TV that now had cut to an emergency news session interrupting the movie he had been watching. "ATTENTION!" It roared.
"Guys, the news man is yelling for attention!" Murray stated. "I hope we aren't getting bad weather coming in."
"I doubt it." Bentley wheeled over to the TV and turned up the volume.
"ATTENTION!" A fairly large eagle in a suit yelled from his desk through the TV. "Our new president has a speech he would like to share. Before I begin, we would love to announce the recent election winnings of President Lucas B. Henry."
Bentley shook his head shocked. "President?" He exclaimed. "We don't have a president, only the US has a president, right?"
Penelope shrugged. "Last I heard they did. Maybe the man meant the new US president or something." She leaned in close to the TV to hear what the news had to say. The suited man soon disappeared and another suited man appeared behind a podium in front of a large crowd. Bentley noticed the familiar suited man and noticed it was the exact same tiger they had seen in Egypt. His eyes opened very wide in shock and his brain began to fill with so many questions. He snatched the remote off the counter and turned up the volume.
"Good evening everyone." The tiger straightened his papers and turned his attention to the crowd. His presence was inviting, but very stern. He seemed to be a very responsible man who was easily approachable, almost like a CEO of a major company. "I do appreciate all of the compromise to make me the world president. My name is Lucas B. Henry and I couldn't be happier to get the privilege to start working on world peace."
"World peace?" Bentley almost felt as if he was going to fall out of his wheelchair. "That…that can't be right! You can't just march into a big office and take over the world!"
"My company Diamond Tech has really been succeeding faster than I could ever hope for. Diamond Tech will now be the dominant provider for everything you own; food, gas, oil, technology, and much more." The tiger looked very sinister staring at the camera, almost as if he was talking directly to Bentley. "I would like to extend a special thank you to my friends in Egypt. If it was not for them, none of this would be possible." The crowd clapped and cheered for the new president, as if none of this bothered them.
Bentley quickly shut off the TV in a panic. "That…no! He…he is the guy that was in Egypt! He is up to something no good!"
Penelope raised an eyebrow. "You sure about that Bentley? I mean, we could use world peace couldn't we?"
"He doesn't want world peace, Penlope!" Bentley snapped. "He…he owns a major company and wants to take over! He was the one in Egypt that we saw, which means…" Bentley thought as hard as he could. He didn't want to make assumptions, but at the same time this was scaring him more than he could even realize. "He has a time machine and knew about Slytunkhamen! That can't be a coincidence that he threw him and Sly in jail. He knows about the Coopers and he used them for something. But, how? I don't understand!" Bentley soon remembered the twins finding the Thevious Racconus on the floor. Soon, it was all becoming clear to him what was going on. "That was not an accident about Skylar and Silvester finding that book on the floor. Someone took it out. That's how President whatever his name is found out about all of this. But…how did he manage to get a time machine? Surely he didn't use mine, I mean, he couldn't. If he had used it he would still be stuck in Egypt."
"You do know Le Paradox has friends in jail, don't you?" Penelope asked. "How do you think I was able to officially cut ties with him and find out all of his nonsense?"
Bentley looked over to Penelope with curiosity now. "Friends?"
"Yeah. You know a man as rich as that guy has connections in prison. They all do, Bentley. Maybe Le Paradox gave him some sort of time machine blueprints for him to use. That's just my theory though."
Bentley tapped his chin. "Perhaps you're right, Penelope. But if that's true, we need to get that time machine back. We have proven altering time is NOT a good idea, especially for what this guy is doing! If we don't stop him now, we are soon going to all be doomed under one company."
"Can I finish my movie?" Murray begged, clearly not listening to their conversation.
"Ugh, okay." Bentley tossed Murray the remote. He turned over to Penelope with concerning eyes. "We can't just let this go, Penelope. I mean, you know what happened the last time someone altered time like this."
Penelope lowered her ears in sadness remembering what had happened with him back when she turned on him. She felt her eyes grow warm and fill with tears. "I…I remember that." She murmured.
Bentley noticed her getting sad and he began to grow sad himself. He forgave Penelope for her actions, despite it hurting him so much. He knew at the end of the day she honestly meant no harm for him, in her mind she was helping him. It still stung him, however. Sometimes, he just thinks to himself he cannot forgive her and throw her to the curb, other days he feels sorry for her and wants to forgive her. Still, he just couldn't exactly completely forgive her quite yet, although his trust for her began to grow over time. "Thank you for helping me." Bentley murmured.
Penelope sighed. "I know it still hurts, Bentley. I'm amazed you wanted to speak to me again."
Bentley looked directly into her big eyes. "Penelope, I…I still love you. Despite what you've done, I can't help but still love you. I know my friends are going to kick me for this later, but…" Bentley stood quiet for a moment trying to say what he wanted to say.
Penelope started to cry. "Please forgive me Bentley. I didn't want to cause harm. I know it still hurts you and I can't help but feel hurt knowing what I have done to you. You didn't deserve it. I'm sorry."
Bentley took some deep breaths, finally shoving any hard feelings he still had for her. "Penelope…I forgive you. I forgive you 100%. You helped me find my best friend and put my family back together. I know maybe you were incorrect about a few things, but I mean we would have not even entertained the idea of finding him if it wasn't for you. I…I'm forever grateful for that."
Penelope smiled and felt a huge sigh of relief leave her body hearing him say this. "Thank you, Bentley."
Bentley smiled back to her and gave her the biggest hug his little turtle body could possibly give her. "No, thank YOU. Really, thank you."
