Chapter 2

Hiruzen watched the boy carefully as he gave the village name. Civilian or ninja, everyone knew of the five major villages…and yet he showed no recognition. Granted, he was still partially drugged, going off the recorded observations, without a new dose he'd likely be fully clear of them in another two hours. Not bad for someone with apparently no shinobi training in how to work them out of your own system. Depending on his answers, he'd either be allowed to recuperate further in the room or be sent to Ibiki. Sedatives could loosen the tongue, as could good pain medicine after all. Plus, having the child of a loyal ninja interrogated never looked good; despite the fact Kakashi hadn't even known he had a son, Hiruzen didn't want to put him through that if he didn't have to.

"Can you tell me your name?" he asked, keeping his tone calm.

"Riku," was the groggy answer, the boy tugging the restraints in bewilderment. They were hospital restraints although with seals to restrict the patient, so they didn't look like the typical restraints used on a prisoner.

"Good, your age?" he pressed on

"Sixteen… Who are you?" the boy was blinking rather frequently, eyes not fully focused.

"I am the Hokage of Konoha," he answered but the boy appeared to not recognise his title. "You were found very badly injured and underwent surgery in order to repair the damage. You've been kept sedated for the last three days to allow your body to heal and recover."

Riku appeared to be tracking what Hiruzen said, which was a good sign, there'd been concern about brain damage due to how hard his head had slammed into the ground. "How bad?" he coughed, and Kakashi gave him some more water.

"A dislocated shoulder, fractured wrist, considerable head trauma, partial hip dislocation and severe bruising along with some kind of cauterised wound there. As well as various bruises, cuts and scrapes according to the medics."

"Huh," the boy blinked.

"Not all of your injuries were from the fall when you arrived?" he pressed.

"Hip and wrist," Riku yawned. "Sorry."

"I believe that would be the remaining drugs." At least he seemed polite, that made a nice change. "Our medics would like a look at your medical records, where are you from?"

But there was no answer, his eyes closed and breathing deep and steady.

Kakashi approached, obviously wanting a closer look, lifting his hitai-ate, revealing his Sharingan. Hiruzen let him look, not like he'd drain his chakra dangerously low using it just to look at the boy. Boy…he was older than Kakashi's team which was rather awkward. "I'm not detecting anything," he finally pulled the cloth back down, stepping back. Neither mentioned the fact that Kakashi would now always know what his son looked like, the memory captured and engraved in his mind by the Sharingan.

"Opinion?"

"He didn't appear to be hiding anything or acting in his lack of reaction to his location and your name," Kakashi reported.

"Not enough to really tell anything important," he shook his head. "The medics have reported that he's burning through the drugs faster than a normal civilian."

"Hatake trait, apparently it's a family thing to not like hospitals," he shrugged, going back to leaning against the wall.

"I'll leave you an Anbu guard as backup, I need to get back to the office," Hiruzen told him. He trusted Kakashi implicitly, but he would not put that burden on him. "Try and see if he knows about you before telling him who you are. Keep me informed."

Kakashi nodded and he left. He really did have work to do. Like keeping the Elders and Council well away from the newest Hatake until they knew more. He would not let them use the boy as leverage against Kakashi.

Kairi sat on the stone wall, looking out over her childhood home, wishing she had more than a handful of vague, scattered memories of the place. She knew Sora had been hopeful that Riku would be there when they arrived, but there was no sign of him. Leon had organised searches to make sure he wasn't lying injured somewhere, but so far there'd been nothing. Merlin and Donald were working together to try and track him down magically and Master Yen Sid was apparently also attempting that.

It wasn't fair! They were finally reunited, Riku got his own body back and now he was lost again. Sora had said he'd been ripped away by the Light, but why? Riku didn't belong in the Darkness anymore, King Mickey had said that, it was why he hadn't been able to open one of those Dark portal things. They had to find him; they would find him!

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Kakashi watched the…his son sleep. His hair was far longer than Kakashi had ever worn his, approaching the length his Father had worn his at, though it seemed even messier, like it had been cut with whatever came to hand. He was tanned and fit looking, though he could use a few meals and a lot more sleep. What had he been through? Who had raised him?

Would…would Riku hate him for not being there to protect him? Had he been raised to despise Kakashi and the Leaf? But there'd been no reaction to Konoha, surely if an enemy had caused his birth somehow, he would hate the Village. Could he be that good an actor? Or had that woman…was there some way Riku was her son?

It had been eleven years since then, the ages didn't line up and yet…he had her eye colour. Moira…it had been a strange name; the whole place had been strange…he remembered that much. It had been an accident, he'd been training with the Sharingan when it had changed, everything around him had spun, sucking him in. When he'd woken he'd been…on a beach, she'd been leaning over him. Her eyes had been the first thing he'd noticed…the same eyes that were staring at him now.

"You're awake," he commented lamely. Wonderful first words. Seeing Riku lick his lips, he got him some more water. "How do you feel?"

"More awake," the boy admitted, looking around and then back at him. "Who are you?"

"Hatake Kakashi, jōnin," he introduced and once again, no reaction. "Do you know what that is?" he asked, wondering how far the boy would take the clueless civilian act. It had to be an act, even the most remote civilian village knew of shinobi.

"No sir," he shifted, wincing when his leg moved slightly, he'd be sore for a while from the surgery. "Why am I tied down?"

"Probably so you wouldn't move and undo all the medics hard work," he shrugged, lying.

"Oh." And the teen seemed to accept that as a reason, interesting. "Um, so where exactly am I?"

"The hospital of Konohagakure," that got a blank look. "Hi no Kuni," he offered but still the teen seemed to have no clue which was beyond strange. It had to be an act, but why? He obviously wasn't claiming amnesia since he'd given at least part of his name and knew about some of his injuries. "Where should you be?" he asked.

"Destiny Islands, home." Though the way he said home didn't seem quite right.

"You don't sound so sure of that," he commented, leaning back against the wall again, appearing totally at ease.

"I…haven't been home in a while," Riku shrugged slightly, as much as he could with the restraints.

The door opened before Kakashi could say anything, a nurse entering with a tray, smiling politely at both of them. "Good afternoon, I have a meal for you," she said as she set the tray down.

To Kakashi's surprise she freed Riku's arms to allow him to eat, then again between himself and the Anbu he knew were guarding the room, surely they could handle one teen…then again he could have escaped such a force as a teen.

"Thank you," Riku studied the food he'd been given and then seemed puzzled by the chopsticks. She left and Riku held them up towards him. "What are these?"

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Leon hated having to give Sora the bad news, but there was no sign of his friend anywhere. Would the poor kid ever be together with his friends for longer than an hour or two before something parted them? He had realty hoped the boy would be somewhere in the Garden, but they had searched everywhere, including both castles since Maleficent was not in residence. It had made sense the boy may instinctively return to their World since it was the first one he had been to; he had lived there for months under Maleficent's tutelage.

They needed to find the boy fast, Sora had reported he was injured badly enough he was barely able to stand on his own, let alone walk. He would be easy pickings for any Heartless that found him, or even a normal being looking for trouble. They had run scans but Traverse Town had not reappeared, so he was not there. There were so many Worlds…and Riku would have no way to contact them.

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Riku clumsily ate the food with the two sticks…chopsticks. He'd seen them before, in the Land of Dragons, but it wasn't like he'd been there long enough to check out the local cuisine. And the Emperor had not invited him to stay for a meal, who would have considering the way he'd been so careful to conceal his identity? Not to mention his attack on the man's guard in order to get close enough to speak with him… He'd done it because he'd looked like Ansem and hadn't wanted rumours of him being back getting out, couldn't stand the thought of Sora thinking…but Sora had seen the truth, so had Kairi.

He didn't know what to think of what was happening. It was nice of them to have treated his injuries but would there be a price? He wasn't Sora who still somehow thought people would always do the right thing, though he had decided to try and think more optimistically, to keep the Darkness from overwhelming him again. He knew there were guards of some kind around his room and then there was the man across the room who kept watching him, who'd shown him how to use the utensils.

There was something about him, and it wasn't just the colour of his hair, it was more than that. He felt almost familiar but Riku was sure he'd never seen him before, and the name wasn't familiar either. It didn't matter, as soon as he was well enough, he had to find a way to leave or contact someone to come for him. Without access to the Corridors, it looked like he'd have to find a way to contact Mickey, he'd be the best since he had ships and he could surely contact Sora if they weren't together.

"Food alright?" the man asked, and Riku nearly jumped, he'd been too lost in thought and had forgotten to keep eating.

"It's good," he answered, taking another mouthful. Not that he had a clue what it was, he could pick out some individual ingredients, but it wasn't a type of cuisine he'd had before.

"It's hospital food, you don't have to be polite about it," somehow, Riku knew he was smirking behind his mask.

He wasn't, he thought it was good, then again his eating habits for the last few years hadn't been the best.

"Food been scarce?" The question had Riku looking at him in surprise and the man…Hatake, waved a hand at him. "Looks like you've lost some weight recently."

He could tell? Or the medic had noticed and said something? What should he say?

"Was someone…did someone hurt you?" Hatake asked carefully, and Riku fought not to react.

Why would he ask that? That was not something you asked a stranger unless it was in this World? And how should he answer? It wasn't like anyone set out to starve him, Maleficent wasn't human so she'd had to get supplies in for him and Hook, different supplies for the others like Ursula. In the Realm of Darkness he'd never felt hunger or thirst really. which had been handy since there was no food. At Castle Oblivion he'd been too scared and busy to think of eating, stuck with drinking potions for fluid. After that…he hadn't often felt hungry once in Ansem's form but at least then he'd had Munny to buy food, DiZ and Naminé were not allowed to cook!

"I was travelling and food wasn't always easy to come by," it was the closest to the truth he could get really.

He'd never worried about World Order before but he'd never really interacted with people outside of groups formed off World. Still, it was probably best to try and ensure it was maintained. He couldn't sense any Heartless around thankfully but he could smell wafts of Darkness, nothing major that was close by, but a bit stronger than he'd expect…except for one really big beacon that seemed kind of covered by a Light presence. Maybe he should look into that before he left?

"Travelling alone?"

"Sometimes," he shrugged. "I was with my best friend, but we got separated, I think he made it home."

Sora had better be home, after everything he'd done to make sure he made it home safely. Riku would never forgive himself if Sora had been sent flying into another World too. He didn't want to even try to imagine what Kairi would do to him, she was way too…creative.

"How did I get here?" he asked, had anyone seen him appear through some kind of portal? Depending on the World, that could have already messed things up.

"You literally appeared in a training ground, several feet in the air, a few of your injuries were from the fall."

"Oh," yeah, that would probably be hard to explain.

"So you didn't mean to?" Hatake pressed, and Riku shook his head.

"I should be home, but something happened…went wrong. There was Light and I was pulled away from Sora, then I woke up here," he patted the bed.

"Hmm…so someone sent you here?"

"Maybe?" Or…no, that was crazy. He'd been thinking about his Mum and how he didn't want to go back to her…and his Dad. But there was no way, his Dad couldn't be from another World, could he?

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

"What is it?" Kakashi asked. The idea someone had grabbed the boy and sent him there was better than him being raised to infiltrate the Village, but not by a lot. Whoever brought him to them would have some kind of plan, surely, why else bring him? And how did they get him past the detection barrier around the Village without being noticed?

"It's silly," Riku denied.

"Maybe, or it could be relevant. Don't you want to know why you're here?" and now he was manipulating his only living kin, the last of his clan. But Konoha came first, the Village was all he'd had for so long. Even the other clans would be suspicious if they had a member appear from nowhere.

Riku shifted, looking uncomfortable. "It's always just been me and my Mum," he started, and Kakashi listened closely, wanting to know how he'd been raised.

By his mother? Unless she'd been a honeypot then that was better than a lot of the other options…unless Riku had been told she was his Mother and she wasn't. That was possible, he could have been given to her to raise in a certain way.

"I don't even know my Dad's name, or anything about him. I haven't been home in over a year and I left…well she was a big part of it," the kid was staring out the window as he talked, obviously uncomfortable. That did not sound good. "Well, I was kind of worried about seeing her again, and wishing I knew my Dad…and then…"

"You were here?" that sounded like something from a story, there were no wish granting jutsu. Still, what were the odds he'd be wishing to meet his father…and end up with Kakashi?

"Like I said, silly," Riku shifted the tray away, the plate empty, resting back against the pillow.

He'd never get a more perfect opening and yet… why was it so hard?

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Riku was trying to explain without giving anything away, but it was hard. He knew his thoughts would make no sense to an outsider, saying anything about his Mum and their relationship, such as it was, made him want to squirm. And yet, telling this man about it, felt kind of right. He didn't understand it, but he was trying to follow his Heart more, to trust the Light inside him. He wasn't scared of falling back to the Darkness, he walked the Road to Dawn, and he knew he was a lot more…balanced than he had been before. He'd likely lost more than just access to the Corridors but had probably gained abilities in the Light instead. He'd need time and space to work it out and practice, not to mention privacy.

"About that," Hatake murmured, and Riku refocused on him. Was he…nervous?

No…no way! That couldn't be… sure they had same the hair but he couldn't really see any other similarities, then again he couldn't exactly see his face. "Are you suggesting that we're…related?" he asked in disbelief, and the man nodded.

"The hospital ran the tests. The results came back positive for paternity."

Paternity…if that meant the same here then they thought he was his Dad? How was that possible? Only one person had ever left the Islands before them, or at least that was the story. Which would mean somehow he had come to the Islands for a time? He was so confused and not sure if he should believe what he was hearing. It could be a plot to get to him, the Organisation might be gone but that didn't mean there weren't others out there who would target Keyblade Wielders. Would Maleficent try and turn him back to her side if given the chance? Probably, but this didn't feel like her work.

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

They entered Yen Sid's tower, Kairi looking around curiously. Sora didn't bother, he'd seen it before, he was just hoping he had some news on Riku. He hadn't been much help before but maybe this time would be different. They entered the office to find Mickey and Yen Sid bent over a book, from the look on the King's face they hadn't had any more luck then them.

,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Something, somehow, had changed. Destiny was written in stone, time could not be changed, so what could have happened? They had no time to investigate, they had to be prepared to greet their Thirteenth and set him on the path to joining them.
