Anna bit her lip nervously as she walked towards her and Elizabeth's regular meeting point. She wondered what she would say to her…
"Hi Elizabeth! I just noticed that you and Queen Elsa have the exact same handwriting. I am sure there is a logical explanation for this, or have I been dating the most powerful and mysterious person in Arendelle all this time?"
Perhaps there really was a logical explanation? But the more she thought about it, the more unlikely it seemed. Elizabeth being the queen somehow explained so many things and yet did not explain them at all. Her secrecy about her identity, her reservations about her personal life. It also explained why she always insisted on avoiding people and meeting in desolate alleys.
But the question is why? Why would the queen of Arendelle hide herself from her citizens like this? It's a question that has plagued many citizens throughout the years.
"That's a fine ring you are wearing, young girl."
Anna stopped and turned around. There was a man standing behind her, leering. She looked down at the glistening ring. Elizabeth had gifted it to her a few days ago. She wore it every day. It comforted her whenever she missed her girlfriend.
"T-Thank you" she stuttered. The man was clearly up to no good. She had to get out of there fast. She turned around to get away, but the man grabbed her arm and twisted.
"Let go of me!" Anna yelled through the pain. The man laughed.
"Shame if someone decides to steal it." He grabbed her wrist and started to pry off the ring.
There was a quick flash of blue light so bright that Anna was blinded momentarily. When her eyes adjusted, she saw the man looking at his fingers in horror, which were encased in ice! The man opened his mouth to scream, and Anna took the opportunity to punch him hard. She turned around to run and crashed into Elizabeth, who was standing there with a dazed look on her face.
"Anna! Are you alright?" Elizabeth asked worriedly. Anna barely had time to process before she noticed the man starting to get up. Act first, think later being her motto, she grabbed her girlfriend and raced off.
"Anna! Wait!"
A storm started to rage around them. The cold wind stung at her face. But she kept running, dragging Elizabeth with her. Eventually the storm was powerful enough that they couldn't run anymore. There was nowhere they could take shelter. Feeling numb from the cold, Anna dropped to her knees.
"Anna!" Elizabeth was beside her in an instant. Anna looked at her weakly.
"Elizabeth, you have to go. Otherwise, you will freeze." Anna managed to say as the cold bit her even more.
"I am not leaving you here!" Elizabeth shouted indignantly. Her eyes hardened in determination as she seemed to make a decision.
"This is my fault! I have to make this right." She whispered and shuffled away from Anna. She closed her eyes and began mumbling. Anna (who was used to Elizabeth's mumbling by now) could make out the words 'conceal, don't feel'. It almost sounded like a spell. Eventually the storm lessened but did not go out completely. As the cold ebbed away from her bones, Anna slowly approached Elizabeth, who had her eyes shut tight.
"E-Elizabeth? How did you do that?" Anna was scared now. This all had to be a coincidence! The storm, Elizabeth's distress, everything. There were so many things she did not understand. Elizabeth bit her lip and looked away.
Anna sighed in frustration. Whenever she tried to get answers, she was always shut out. She had had enough of being careful, consequences be damned! It was time to find out what she had initially planned to. She blurted out the first statement that came to her mind.
"You are not Elizabeth, are you? You are the Queen of Arendelle." It was a statement, not a question.
…
…
…
As if someone had flipped a switch, the storm stopped, the snowflakes froze mid air as if held by an invisible force. As Anna stared in shock, the snowflakes shattered, creating a deafening noise across Arendelle.
"E-Elizabeth? W-what's going on?" Anna wanted to scream at her. Elizabeth hugged herself in despair.
"I am sorry, Anna. I didn't mean to. I swear I didn't…"
"Elizabeth, listen to me…" Anna tried but to no avail as Elizabeth kept rambling incoherently.
"ELSA!" she tried. That got her attention. Eliza- no, Elsa snapped her neck up.
"You…you are the queen?" Anna asked hesitantly. Elsa nodded.
"And you can somehow affect the storm?" Another nod.
Anna stared. This was too much information all at once. But it definitely explained a lot, such as…
"Is that why you hide from everyone?" Elsa blinked through her tears and gave her a calculated look.
"Yes, Anna." She said sadly. She stood up and drew herself to her full height. Her expression faded quickly as if a mask had been put up in its place. Her shaking stopped, her fear seemed to vanish. Elsa seemed to disappear as the queen of Arendelle stood before Anna and declared.
"I am Queen Elsa of Arendelle. I hide my powers for the safety of my citizens. If you resent me for this, Anna, I will go. I have only one request, and that is to keep my secret safe."
Anna was rather taken aback by the sudden change. She was rather used to the feeble and meek Elizabeth. The woman who stood before her was mighty and regal, who carried the weight of an entire country on her shoulders. Suddenly, the fact that the queen was standing before her sunk in. She resisted the urge to curtsy, like her mother had taught her, reminding herself that this was just a façade.
"Why would I resent you, Elsa?" Anna asked her defeatedly. "I only resent the fact that you didn't trust me enough to tell me. I want to help you, Elsa. But I can't do that if you shut me out like this."
There was a pause.
"No one can help me, Anna." Elsa whispered dejectedly. "I was born with this curse. I cannot control it. My parents tried everything. I could hurt someone."
"It's not a curse, Elsa! It's a gift. You saved me with your abilities. And look, the snow has already melted!" Anna pointed out.
And so it had. Elsa looked around to find only puddles of water. Even the sky was clear. It was as if nothing happened.
"The people are going to freak out at this. I bet none of them had ever seen such a powerful storm in summer." Anna giggled at this, imagining the look on citizen's faces but stopped when she saw the one on Elsa's.
"Oh Elsa. It will be fine. No one was hurt." Anna took her gloved hand in her own.
"I-…have to go, Anna. Kai and Gerda will be worried." Elsa squeezed her hand.
"Who is Kai and Gerda?"
"The castle caretakers."
"Oh."
A pause.
"Will I see you again?" Anna asked. Elsa bit her lip.
"I don't know." With one last sorrowful look, she put on her hood and set off. Anna watched her go, possibly for the last time. With a pang in her chest, she remembered that Elsa had not kissed her goodbye like she usually did.
