A loud knock on my door interrupted my actions. My eyes widened as I looked at the chain of linen sheets I'd tied together that was currently lying on the floor.
That was the best plan I was able to come up with. Tie bed sheets together and use them as a rope to scale down the castle and escape. I'd been blaring music as loud as I could to try and distract their ears from picking up the sounds of what I was doing.
Leaping over the bed I paused the music before creeping carefully to the door and pressing my ear against it.
"Who is it?" I asked nervously.
"Demetri."
I gingerly opened the door just enough so that I could see him. "Yes?"
"As much as Felix and I may love Taylor Swift, others in this castle do not and we respectfully ask that you keep the noise down," he smiled.
"Who's annoyed by the music?"
"Alec and Jane."
"Ok," I nodded, shutting the door and proceeding to walk straight over to the speakers and press play.
Very quickly, another knock sounded on the door.
"I'm not turning it down, Demetri!"
An even more aggressive knock sounded on the door and I huffed before walking straight up to it and yanking it open. "I said no," I snapped before gasping. It was not Demetri standing there, it was a livid Jane.
"Turn. It. Off."
"Ask me nicely," I sassed, crossing my arms.
"This is me asking nicely," she hissed.
All I did was roll my eyes, but that was enough to send her to another level of rage.
She leaned in close to me and growled. "Turn it off now or I'll show you how my gift really works."
My eyes widened. "You're not allowed to do that," I stuttered.
"Perhaps not. But I do have my limits and you are testing them, human."
I mulled over my options. Perhaps pissing off Jane wouldn't serve me any good. What would happen if she barged further into the room and saw my makeshift rope?
"Fine," I relented. "I'll turn it off."
I went to close the door and she placed a single finger on it, stopping me from closing it fully.
"Disrespect me again human and I'll really give you something to sulk about."
"Noted," I agreed, before fully shutting the door and walking over to the speaker and turning off the music. Huffing I threw myself down onto the bed. I hadn't been able to make the rope long enough. Which put my escape attempt on a temporary pause.
Standing up I flung open the window and looked down. I was definitely too high up for what I'd made. Groaning I slammed the window closed again and looked around. This was not going to plan.
A soft knock sounded on my door. "Oh my goodness, what is this, musical door knocks, I just want to be left alone," I mutter to myself as I open the door. "What now?" I ask as I open the door to see Alec standing there. "Oh. It's you."
Alec raises his eyebrow at me but doesn't give me the satisfaction of a reply.
"I've come here to request that you keep this door shut for the next hour," he formally asks.
"Why?"
"We're going to feed," he explained.
"Can't I get some food as well?" I glare.
"Trust me, what we're eating, you wouldn't be interested in," he smirked and my eyes widened.
How could I be so stupid? When he said feed, he didn't mean with food. He meant on people.
"Now you see this," he said as he leaned toward me and tapped the door handle. "Just keep it closed and you'll be fine. No one will venture to this side of the castle anyway."
"And if they do?" I asked nervously.
"They won't," he assured me, but I just stared at him terrified. "It's fine. If they come this way I'll stop them. They won't get close to you."
I nodded nervously as I fidgeted in the doorway.
"Relax. I'll let you know when it's over," he assured me as I shut my door and locked it. Although I doubt my door would be able to stop a vampire if they wanted in.
But at least this did present an opportunity. I quickly and noisily began pulling more sheets out of the cupboard, any excess noise I made could simply be put down to me barricading myself inside. Keeping myself safe from the scary vampires.
I began tying the sheets together. If I moved fast enough, I could make it.
I tried to be as silent as possible as I tied the rope around the base of the bed.
The plan was to get out, find a phone and call my dad. If I could get onto my dad, he could get me help.
It'd been some time since Alec left and I had a feeling I didn't have long left until the massacre was over.
I tugged on the rope with all my might and it held in place. Letting out a breath of relief I ran to the window and gently lowered the rope.
I only had one shot at this. If it went wrong and I was caught, who knows what they'd do to me.
I crawled up onto the window ledge and stared down. 3 floors. That's how far I had to climb down. I've admittedly never been a real fan of heights.
"Ok, ok," I hype myself as I grasp the rope and lower myself out of the window. I let out a shriek of surprise as I feel the rope jolt and squeeze my eyes shut. But I didn't fall. So thank goodness for small mercies.
I'd never been one to consider the consequences of my actions. I did want I wanted when I wanted. I'd always been able to talk myself out of any trouble I got in. Perhaps if I'd really considered things I might've waited a moment and come up with a better plan. But I wasn't thinking of what could befall me, or those around me. All I knew is I had to get out. I had to get out now.
Carefully I began to climb down the rope. It wasn't until I was near the bottom that I heard my name.
"Wilhelmina!" Alec yelled. I froze on the rope and looked up to see a panicked Alec looking down at me.
"Shit," I muttered.
"Do not move any further. I'm going to pull you back up where it's safe. Just don't let go. Please," he requested.
I felt the rope tug as he started to pull me up and threw caution to the wind and released my hold on the rope, falling the remaining 10 feet and slamming into the ground.
A loud choking sound echoed throughout my chest as I desperately tried to suck air into my lungs. Hitting the ground had winded me and left me momentarily stunned.
"Willa! Answer me!" Alec's voice yelled at me. I looked up at my window to see he was no longer there, he was standing in the doorway in front of me. "Willa!"
I coughed and spluttered as air finally flowed back into my chest. Rolling over onto my stomach I looked around to see I had fallen onto the cobblestones beneath my window. Staggering back onto my feet I turned to look at Alec. He stood in the doorway still, shifting his gaze rapidly from me to the sun that was still visible in the sky. Vampires. The myth was they burn in the sun. There must be some truth to that, as Alec seemed unable to step out of the shadows.
I staggered a few steps backward and his alert eyes snapped back to me.
"Are you hurt?" he demanded. "Willa. I need you to talk to me."
I ignored him and looked back up at the sun. It was probably 5 pm. I still had some time before the sun set for the day.
I felt a warm trickle run down the back of my head and I moved my hand back to touch my head only to see some blood. It wasn't an extreme amount, but it did make me turn back to Alec. Back to the vampire.
His previously vibrant red eyes had darkened slightly as another wave of panic seemed to overtake his features.
"Wilhelmina," he seethed as he seemed to hold his breath. "You are hurt. I need you to stay there. Do not move. And do not come in here."
I shook my head as I took a few more steps backward before I turned and ran. Ran through a Tuscan town I had never been to before. A town I had no concept of direction in.
"WILLA!" I heard Alec roar after me. But there was nothing he could do. Not so long as the sun was up.
I turned the corner of the old castle they'd been keeping me in to see a water fountain in what appeared to be the main square. I touched the back of my head to see there was only a little bit of blood. Normally this wouldn't bother me, but who knew how many vampires could be creeping around this town, so I dipped the back of my head into the fountain in an attempt to wash away some of the blood.
Lifting my head I looked over to the entrance of the clock tower that connected to the rest of the castle to see Alec and his sister standing in the doorway, watching me. One twin's face was that of anguish and the other one of rage. I'll leave it to you to guess which was who's. But it was clear to me Alec wasn't looking forward to the punishment Aro would inflict upon him for failing to keep me in the room.
Smirking at them I turned and ran. Ran out of their view. And hopefully out of their lives.
"Ciao," I greeted an old lady as I desperately grabbed onto her arm. She paid me no mind as she ripped her arm away from me and continued walking.
I ran further down the street until I crossed a young pregnant lady. "Ciao, por favore," I begged but she just shook her head with a sneer and continued walking.
I let out a sob as I looked down the street to see no one else. Darting down a few side streets I came out onto another main strip and ran up to an old man. "Ciao," I cried.
He smiled down softly at me. "Sì?"
"Parla Inglese?" I butchered as I tried to ask him if he spoke English.
"Yes," he nodded.
"Please help me," I cried as my legs gave out and I slid down a wall. "Please help."
"Dolcezza," he gasped. "What is the matter?"
I was not completely reckless. I knew what fate would await this man if I told him the truth and I was caught. Death. The fact that they were showing me mercy was still a matter of confusion to me. But I doubt they'd show this man a shred of that.
"I got lost and fell and now I can't find my family. Please help me," I lied.
"Do you need to make a phone call?" he asked and I nodded eagerly.
"Two if I may."
"Of course," he nodded as he pulled out an old Nokia brick phone.
"Thank you," I wiped my tears as I took it from his grasp. My first point of call. Not my father as planned. My cousin. Bella.
I knew her number off by heart and frantically punched it into the phone.
"Bella!" I gasped as it picked up.
"This is Carlisle," her father-in-law responded.
"Carlisle? Where's Bella?" I asked.
"She's here, you're on loudspeaker."
"Bella?"
"I'm here Willa," Bella spoke up.
I looked up at the old man and he took a couple of steps away to give me some privacy as I curled up into myself.
"What's happening Bella? I'm so scared. I don't know what's going on, please tell me what's going on."
"I'm so sorry Willa, I never meant for you to get caught up in this. We tried so hard to prevent it."
"Prevent it? What do you mean to prevent it?"
"Alice she… she has a gift," Bella stuttered.
"A vampire gift?" I whispered.
"Yes. She can see the future."
"She saw this happen to me?"
"A year and a half ago," Bella responds and I let out another sob. "We tried so hard to keep them away from you when you were in Forks. I am so sorry."
"The boy…" I realise. "He found me in Port Angeles."
"Alice couldn't see that. Willa, please believe me."
"Bella. Are you a vampire?" I stuttered.
"I am," she answered quietly.
"I don't understand. How is this happening? Please, I just want to go home. I'm so scared, Bella, I just want my mum and dad," I cried as tears flowed down my cheek.
"Willa," Alice interrupted. "I'm sorry, but we don't have time for this. They'll be coming after you soon."
"No, they can't. The sun's still up," I argue as I look to the sky to confirm that the sun is still in fact there.
"I know the sun is there. But they can stick to the shadows. There will be shadows covering the clock tower in 15 minutes and they'll be able to leave then. You need to stick to the sun. If you can get your way onto the number 500 bus and then the train to Pisa airport we'll help you get out. But you have to get there."
"How do you see my future? Can I make it?" I ask.
"The future can always change," she avoids answering me directly.
"I'm not going to make it," I surmise.
"You can make your own odds. Even if you don't, we're coming to Italy, Willa. We want to help. But you have to help yourself now. You don't have time to call your dad, you need to hang up, and you need to run. Now!" she urged.
I quickly hung up the phone and handed it back to the man. "Grazie!" I yell back at him as I take off running.
I wasn't going to let Alice tell me my future. It was unwritten. I was going to run like a bat out of hell, and I was going to defy her premonition.
