Chapter 13

"Attention to all passengers, this is your captain speaking. We will arrive at the Vacuo capital's main airport in five minutes. Please prepare for landing and disembarking. Thank you for listening"

Ruby put back her scroll to the pocket and looked outside of the window. It was dark with street lamps lighting up the streets inside the city placed in the middle of the desert.

Five minutes later Ruby was prepared and disembarked the craft by a lowered ramp. Looking around she started thinking 'I need to get a place to stay, map and information about the deals. I need to verify everything first'. Rose decided to go get a room inside one of the hotels, since it was Vacuo, she had lowered her hood and let her ears breathe, as they were hidden the whole trip. Lucky Ruby heard that Vacuo was welcoming city to all kinds of races as long as they can survive here, so there should be only small amount of discrimination from outsiders mostly.

Going through the streets, Ruby took out her scroll and downloaded the maps of Vacuo. Using them, she located the shops and affordable, not shared rooms in a local hotel on the edge of the city as she didn't want to risk anyone finding out that she was part of White fang accidentally. Ruby then checked her localisation and pathway to the hotel. The closest one would be by taking a shortcut by some alleys, which she didn't think would be a problem.

Memorizing the way and pocketing her scroll back into its place, Ruby went straight to the hotel, as she didn't want to risk closed doors or lack of receptionist.

Passing by one of the dark, dirty alleys, Ruby heard a silent metallic screech in front of her and she tried to smell him or they. That was a big mistake, as the smell of urine, sweat, womit and rotten food hit her at the same time, causing her to take a step back recoiling from the smell. Looking around Ruby spotted a man clothed in ragged clothes behind her at the entrance of a valley and two people coming out in front of her in the same type of clothing.

"Now now, what do we have here? A little girl in a red hood entering a black alley… We are only interested in your bag and pockets content. Give us everything and we will le…"

He didn't finish as Ruby, using only her aura to enhance speed and strength, scored a hit on his balls, causing them to turn into a bloody mesh and him to drop dead faint on the floor from shock and pain.

"Who is next?" Ruby asked.

"Shit, a Huntress in training" the second person in front of her said with a pale face, while retreating back, turning around and running wildly only to be knocked down by an uneven pavement stone.

Looking back, Ruby saw that the person behind her also started running away from her to the street and taking the turn to hide from her view by building. Such a reaction proved to her that none of them had aura unlocked, so they were easy to take care of and weak. She then unsheathed her blade and moved into the one crawling on the pavement away from her. He looked at her, turned on his back and yelled "leave me alone! Mercy! Please!"

Ruby already decided that she needed to punish him and came closer to him, levered her blade onto his chest and said "Did you think that I am a weak little girl to be taken advantage of and fucked here? I saw how your member grew up and I am well aware of what kind of atrocious things human males can do… Now face yours punishment"

Ruby lowered her aim and stabbed a couple of times his family jewels castrating him painfully on a spot. She then cleaned her blade using a disposable piece of cloth and sheathed the sword back into its place.

"Now that I took care of some of the trash here I need to get into that hotel" Ruby thought aloud and continued her way to the destination.

Rest of the road was luckily uneventful and Ruby learned to watch out more about her surroundings. Finally after a twenty minutes walk, she was there in front of the hotel.

Building itself was nothing special like all others made from stone bricks and a sign 'hotel hole'. Inside was a small reception, stairs leading up and a bulky man napping on a chair behind the table with a couple of keys behind him labeled with numbers.

Ruby approached the table and ringed a small bell on top of it, waking a man in front of her.

"Welcome to the hole. How can I help you?"

"I wish to rent a single room here."

"Aren't you a little too young to be going alone and renting a room? It cost you know? Where is your family and do they know?"

"My family sent me here to Vacuo to study at the local huntress preparation school. I am starting in three weeks and my parents aren't rich enough to come here with me. I was supposed to attend tomorrow, but there was an unexpected delay with paperwork by my previous academy."

"Now why would they send you away alone and not wait for them to get enough for a whole family? Also why Vacuo, when there are nicer and better places like Vale?"

"I was in Mantle prep school and that was not a kind place for my kind with faunus passing made impossible, by taking the test scores by order of the headmaster. Vacuo was the cheapest place to go and least discriminatory. My parents are still working in a munitions factory in that district. They give me a chance of a free life in a place where I can achieve something."

The man took a random key from a wall and threw it on her "Take it. First week stay on me, but for food you still need to pay".

"Thank you" Ruby thanked with a deep bow in order to show him her gratitude. She was also surprised that lying with a bit of truth mixed inside worked. For her white fang under Sienna Khan was family, but not through blood, but commanderie. She reached her room and unpacked her backpack, took a shower and called the day by going to sleep.

Next day Ruby woke up, prepared herself and paid for breakfast, which were scrambled eggs with onion and sausage, given with bread next to. It was tasty and she left with a smile on her face.

'Now how do I start my mission? I think a visit to all dust shops would be appropriate, but not asking questions in order to not make any suspicion on me' Ruby thought while going through the dense city covered partially by sand flying in the air, due to strong winds today.

Using her scroll map function she planned her way shop by shop, stopping inside of them to try to listen in, observe, check the assortment, find any suspicious reaction, or racist action against her and finally to buy a weapon magazine, each volume different, from the shops for the evening reading for her hobby.

'Damn, found nothing, but at least I have these' she giggled silently at the thoughts of her new magazines, but frowned later due to her mission.

'Need to find something… Looks like I need to observe the target, but I don't know where she is, or even if she arrived here yet… Wait, one of the workers at the third shop was a faunus, maybe he knows something' Ruby made her way back to that place giving up and decided to stalk and confront him outside after work.

Five hours later he finally left the shop and went to his home, causing Ruby to jump down the roof where she was lying and observing the only exit and entrance to the shop and to follow him to his building, where she stopped him by standing in front of him.

"Excuse me, sorry for bothering you, but I need to ask you something"

"What is it? Just finished my work and I am hungry and angry. If it's nothing important then leave and don't bother me anyone".

"Do you know where Margaret Gera is?"

This confused the rude faunus showing he knows who she is, but he answered "Who are you child? A spy from another company or what?"

"Who I work for is confidential, but I know that if Margaret Gera buys the shop you are working for, you will lose a job, as she hates our kind. Think about yourself and your family and act in a way that it will not cause them harm, by your inaction, when it matters".

"And why would I lose the job? Even if she hates our kind, this is Vacuo we are talking about and it's not easy to find a good worker here".

"All of her shops in Solitas and Mantle have strict anti-faunus policies and she went as far to close the shops, if there were not enough humans to operate them. Trust and tell, then your future will be happier, but don't tell anyone about me".

"She will visit us in a month to finalize a deal, but we are not the first shop, she is doing this in Vacuo and I overheard her talk on the scroll that she will arrive in ten days to buy out the first one and remodel it. Don't know which one though. Now go".

Ruby left happy with this information and realized that she has a lot of free time from now on. Back in the hotel, she prepared her weapons and went to train her in combat against grimm, as the area nearby was full of flying pests while hiding big ones under the sand.

Finally leaving the city and stepping into hot and lone desert, Ruby shoots her Scarlet Rose into the flying Grimm, while switching occasionally to Gentle Rose for a melee fight. Deciding to use only her aura to enhance her speed, muscles, reaction time and weapon durability like any huntress do, while saving her semblance of a crucial moment in case of danger.

During the fight she found one big problem about her style of fighting against grimm. It took her too much time to secure her rifle in the back and reach for her blade in the middle of the fight on open terrain with no cover.

'Looks like I need to fix that problem later. Well got the magazines to check out. Maybe I will find something cool to add to my baby' Ruby though with a smile on her face, while jumping above Grimm and stabbing it in the back of the neck during her landing, killing it and causing a slow dissipation process.

"Is that all you can do?" She taunted the Grimm, which charged at her all at the same time, but half of them died before reaching her position, due to bullets hitting their eyes and penetrating their brains. For the rest she again secured her weapon and used the blade to cut, slash, parry and stab while evading most of their attacks.

At the end of her battle, Ruby checked her scroll for aura level and found it on thirty five percent 'Quite low, but I did use the semblance twice, otherwise I would have no aura remaining and would be too weak to do anything about the grimm, well I could always use my eyes for emergency, but there is a risk of falling unconscious. Well break and fun time with upgrading my baby. Got time for that'.

Ruby then retreated back to the hotel and started reading magazines, while drawing blueprints for upgrades. Next few days looked the same, with Ruby finishing blueprints, getting better in fighting, used to temperature, while occasionally beating some thugs that attempted to rob her.

Author note:

Sorry for two weeks of no updates.

For me everything that happened past volume 2 is fan fiction of RWBY… The writers did not like the end credits scene with Yang and her mother getting to talk on a street, so they completely ignored and tried to forget about it… The scene was from Oum, who died due to an allergic reaction before V. 3 released. Later they sacrificed Raven's character to make her into a prideful villain and Yang from looking for the reason why mother left her into 'I don't care, because the show must go on and people did not like all of them getting separated for a long time'. It was also Volume 3 that invented maidens making her into a perfect candidate for it.

Damn, they should stop trying to make characters outside of the main cast into villains, because they want to push some action in the storyline… Really Ironwood? And also what did he do wrong for everyone to hate and distrust him all the time he is shown? Especially after he fought during the fall of the beacon and helped anyone he could… Not a main cast so it doesn't count he fought, helped Weiss, gave a prosthetic arm to Yang, and other things...
