CHAPTER 19

Just after midnight Ruby flight reached the destination waking her up, as she stretched herself before standing up, taking her bags and leaving the plane. It was dark outside with the illumination coming mostly from street lamps, but in order to truly benefit from her faunus night vision, she would need to enter a darker area without that amount of light sources.

Ruby made her way to the village gates and using her semblance flew over the wall, before materialising again outside in the dark forest. She waited a little for her eyes to get used to the darkness, before checking the compass that had fluorescent digits and a pointer in order to get the direction of where to go.

After getting to know the bearing, Ruby started walking in that direction. She, like the others, were ordered for security measures to never mark the location of the castle in any of the maps, either electronic or paper one.

Rose decided to walk at moderate speed, while keeping her eyes open for anything that might endanger her. Two hours later she saw a dark shadow moving in her edge of the field, while the broken moon was behind one of the bigger clouds, limiting her vision by a big degree.

Ruby reached for her back in order to unleash her rifle in a full melee and sniper rifle mode without a scope on top, but shifted to the right side, so she could use her iron sights for close combat firing. She could have used assault rifle mode, but decided against it as she needed to train herself in spear combat, as it was still basically a new thing for her, even though she still had a moderate skill in using her blade if she were not allowed to use her semblance.

In case she were to lose her weapon, she always had transformable fingers into sharp claws inside her right metallic hand, thought it would break the fake skin layer on top of it.

Thinking about all of this, Ruby realised 'I might be going a little overboard with the amount of weapons on my body, but I love them, they are literally an expansion of my soul. There is no perfect weapon for everything, but there are perfect weapons for occasions', before focusing back to incoming fight and stabbing her spear to the left, where it bounced off the boartusk armoured head, forcing her to sidestep in order to evade enemy charge.

The moment she evaded another Grimm, this time Beowulf jumped on her, but in time, Ruby stabbed her Scarlet Rose into the Grimm left side of stomach and cursed seeing, she missed the centre and Beowulf was still alive.

Taking another step left, Ruby squeezed the trigger, causing a loud gunshot to echo in the forest, blowing up the Beowulf chest into the nothingness, before removing her rifle and jumping back in order to evade boartusk charge. Before landing, Ruby slammed the side of her spear rifle into another Beowulf that tried to attack her from behind and managed to cut through his neck, making his body fall to the ground and start dissipating.

Boartusk hit the last Beowulf, an alpha of the pack making it stumble a little, before recovering and attacking her. That moment it took the alpha to recover allowed her to kill her previous target without problems.

Switching to the Alpha, Ruby re-chambered her rifle, before trying to strike it's throat, as torso, head and back were heavily armoured, but missing a little as it evaded her Scarlet Rose, by a few millimeters and tried to hit her with its claws, but missing. Ruby was already moving to its side and slamming her spear up on an unarmoured part of the right limb, cutting through it and letting it fall and dissipate. The Grimm screeched in pain, before trying to throw itself on her with its jaw wide open aiming at her head in order to bite it down.

Ruby, without thinking, just slammed her spear into its mouth, penetrating its brain and killing it as she squeezed her rifle again. Removing it from dissipating Grimm, she kicked the boartusk on its side and slammed her Scarlet Rose into its stomach. Looking around she saw there were no more enemies for now and smiled with a brief relieved sigh.

'Well at least I was able to test my upgrade and I was not forced to use my semblance. I count that as a big success' Ruby thought with a smile, before continuing her journey back to the castle.

Two days later in the early afternoon, after a long trip and many fights, Ruby managed to reach the visibility range of the castle walls. One third of the fights forced her to use semblance against monsters such as big Grimm scorpions and nevermores, but she managed to learn a lot from these fights and improve her spearmanship.

Being tired from lack of sleep, long travel and fights, Ruby wore her white fang mask, as she was starting to reach the castle gate, where she was stopped by gate guards.

"Black rose reporting back from mission. Here is my scroll, check it fast, because I want to get a fast shower, before debrief and go to sleep" Ruby said as she gave them her scroll from pocket, which they passed by a scanner in order to detect hidden chip with and ID inside, that was put by an engineering team inside the castle for this white fang command cell and higher ups from other cells.

"It's all right and you better go wash yourself, you stink with sweat. Wait a moment…" The guard who took her scroll for a moment, before giving it back, said while looking at a monitor "Looks like the high leader wants to see you in twenty minutes, after the scheduled meeting ends. Better go fast".

Ruby nodded, before going inside the castle grounds, passing the front yard, entrance, going to her room, while greeting everyone on the corridors, finally stripping herself completely, while throwing her clothes on the floor next to shower, except her cloak, which she placed before on an empty shelf, took a long warm blessed shower.

About fifteen minutes later, Ruby stepped out of shower, wiped herself off and rolled the towel around her wet hair and started clothing herself in light clothes that looked good enough to walk around.

Leaving the room, Ruby went to the throne room, where the guard said "High leader is waiting for you. Come inside" while opening the door for her. She thanked him as she passed. Reaching the steps, Ruby knelt on one knee and with head lowered she said "High leader Khan, I have returned from mission. I am sorry for my failures".

"Stand, there is nothing that you failed at. You faced complications that you had no way to predict, or evade. Though I want to hear the report directly, from your side of the story" Sienna said in a commanding voice, which was much different from the one she used outside of the throne room.

Standing and looking up to Khan, Ruby started to recount all of the things that happened. It took her half an hour of nonstop retelling of everything, before finishing her report and waiting for her leader's orders, that was resting her head on her hand in a thinking pose.

After a while she heard "You were lucky and unlucky at the same time Ruby. For now you will stay in the castle and continue schooling on the second day of your stay here. In future you will get more missions, but for now for security measures you will stay low. Now go eat and rest. Dismissed".

Ruby made a small nod with her upper body, before turning her back towards Khan and leaving the throne room. Thankfully, due to being reminded to eat by Sienna, she started to feel hungry and went to the mostly empty canteen, where the cook on duty recognized her instantly and with a joyous voice said "Welcome back home Ruby. I will make you something special, as I can see you are here barely standing after missing my cooking for some time. Hahahaha" and with these words and laughter he went back to the kitchen.

Well the canteen food wasn't the best tasting thing in the world, so Ruby decided to wait for the chef to make her something, as he could make tasty things if he was cooking for smaller amounts of people and had a mood or there was some kind of occasion for it.

After about fifteen minutes of waiting, the cook left the kitchen with a tray containing two plates. Placing the plates in front of her and saying "This is onion soup from my grandma recipe book, I won't say what it is, but it is with the grilled garlic covered bread from this plate. After this I will give you a second course. Good appetite".

Without a single hesitation, Ruby started eating slowly while blowing the heat out of the spoon and biting the bread in between. She liked how it tasted and after finishing it, she felt satisfied and warmed up. Standing up, Rose took the empty plates and placed them on the return corner and heard the voice "Don't leave yet. Second dish is almost ready. If you leave and don't even taste it, then I am banning you from my cooking".

Ruby, a little pale on her face, immediately headed back to her seat and waited as the chef left with the plate full of pasta.

"This is allio pasta, made from pasta, garlic, a couple of herbs, bacon and olive oil. If you want I can place some in a box, for later to be reheated in a microwave. Taste won't change too much".

"Thank you very much" Ruby answered with a smile on her face towards the cook, who smiled and answered with "it is a pleasure to cook something better from time to time".

"If you like to cook good stuff, then why are you making them so rarely?" Ruby asked with a confusion on her face.

"Hahaha, because I am too lazy to do it every time and doing it sometimes makes it more special" the chef answered with a laugh and without taking any resentment.

After eating one third of the dish and packing rest to the plastic box given to her by the cook, Ruby went to her room, brushed teeths in the bathroom and went to sleep.

Next day she awoke feeling pain all over her body, due to over exercised muscles by the two days trip and Ruby immediately launched her aura to stop the pain and at least partially to recover. After a while, Rose stood up from a bed, looking around in the sun-covered room, Ruby checked the clock that showed her it was already twenty three minutes past first.

Thanking mentally the cook, Ruby opened the leftover box and microwaved the contents on one of the three sets of plates and utensils she had in the room for emergency along with washing fluid in the bathroom bottom shelf under the sink.

Waiting for the countdown to reach zero Ruby thought 'I heard that massages are really good for the muscles, but I don't know if there is anybody here that does it, plus I never had any massage. I wonder if there are different types of it like maybe back massage, legs, aura…' "Ding ding ding" Rose was pulled out of her thinking by the microwave signaling the end of reheating process, and removed the dish, which she placed on her desk which stood next to her bed. She ate it in silence, before cleaning the plate and utensils and leaving them to dry in the bathroom.

She left the room and decided to visit people, such as doctor Links she had missed earlier and say hi. Since she had a free day today, Ruby decided that after meeting everyone, she would go to the roof of the castle and lie on there in the sun, as she loved to do so.

After meeting everyone and lazing around on the sunny roof, Ruby saw it was slowly getting dark and decided to head back to her room, where after opening the door she saw Sienna Khan sitting on her bed and waiting. Closing the door behind her, Ruby looked at the high leader with visible unsaid questions on her face, to which Sienna replied "It's been a long time since we had time alone, Ruby, now sit and relax next to me. No need to talk if you don't want to. Tomorrow your lesson with Doctor Damian resumes, but now we both have free time".

Ruby sat next to Khan and snuggled herself to the side of Sienna, in which she just chuckled a little, before moving her left arm around her and with right hand lightly scratching her scalp and bottom parts of ears, letting an unwanted purring escape Rose's throat.
