DxD: Gamer Story
Chapter 2
It had been a few days since I started the process of warding my property and I was now nearly finished. I only needed to power one last rune and then the first ward would be complete. Coincidentally the whole thing was counted as a form of exercise, more specifically for dexterity, which led to me gaining three points of DEX and because of all the walking I also gained another point for my DEX stat, which I honestly found a bit amusing.
But the ward wouldn't be very powerful, last all that long or be that strong, but it was enough for the moment. I could already walk around in my garden in broad daylight without fear of being noticed, which helped tremendously. Though I still hadn't flown even once since I had first wanted to have the wards up and running before I tried to do so. I, after all, wanted to have a relatively safe home to retread to, should I need it. Otherwise, I had also leveled my Grip ability up once and my cooking got better too. So far I had already enough food in my Inventory to last me for several days and I learned that I quite enjoyed cooking, even though I wouldn't want to do it as a full time job or something similar. Though on the front of a steady source of money I had had no such luck so far. I couldn't think of anything that I could do to earn money that wouldn't just be a normal everyday job. Which was kind of frustrating.
But now that I had finished with the wards, I could feel them properly snapping into place like a solid shield instead of the warbled mess that they had been before that.
[New Achievement!
Flimsy, but present!
Congratulations upon completing your very first ward scheme to protect your property and make it seem as if nothing was out of place. Of course the ward isn't very strong, being made from the barebones of knowledge, but everything starts out small!
Reward: Advanced Book of Warding (Beginner), + 1 DEX, + 1 WIS, + 1 INT, 1 Charged Mana Crystal]
Huh. I guess that explained why there had been no Quest for the warding.
[{Correct! This feature was added because Lucina does not want to give Quests for everything, so Achievements were added. This way you still get rewarded for doing things and bettering yourself/getting stronger. However all the Achievements are hidden Achievements so you won't know that they exist until you have completed them.}]
That was interesting. Quests would generate what the goal is, the rewards and the penalties for failure, while with Achievements I was going into the things blind and only found out that there where rewards when it was finished. The Achievement reward you for progressing without spoiling anything. Thinking about it, I think I enjoyed it this way more, since it seemed a bit more natural and I also could progress on my own terms without having any added pressure in the case of failure.
I decided to look at the rewards later, since now that the wards were finished I could finally do something that I had been dying to try out for the last few days now.
Flying.
I longed to finally use the wings I have and use them to fly! And so with a last glance at my surroundings I finally gave into the urge and snapped my wings open, taking a few steps forward to let the wind catch in my wings, gave a jump and properly flapped my wings for the first time.
With a whoosh I took off and from there on it was pure instinct guiding me, that had me angling my wings and bringing my body into the proper position. I didn't even have to think about anything, my body already knew what it had to do and so I could focus on the absolute joy and elation that moving through the air using my own wings brought me. It felt so freeing that I just spent most of the time in the air just basking in this feeling of freedom and fulfillment.
Soon though I had to go back down since despite the size of the garden, the space was cleared quickly with the speed I reached even in what was just a casual flight. But I soon realized that just because I instinctively knew how to fly, didn't mean that I could land. And so, with a less than graceful stumble, that nearly caused me to fall flat on my face, I landed. Once I was back on the ground however, I noticed that it was surprisingly exhausting. I wasn't in the air for longer than three minutes at most and yet I used nearly half of my stamina. Though I did gain experience for my flying skill which a quick glance at my skills confirmed.
[Flight: (Beginner: 8,59%)
A pair of large red wings that have an impressive wingspan of around five times the individuals height. At Level 1 you can not yet retract them.
Max Speed: 25 m/s
Cost: 25 SP per min]
That were roughly three percent for every minute that I spent in the air flying. So in order to level up my flying skill, something that was not just advantageous but actually needed if I wanted to Ascend to the second level and be able to hide my wings, but the whole thing would take some time, seeing as it was exhausting and my stats were still rather lacking.
Deciding that that was something that I would have to deal with later, I looked at what I had gotten earlier as reward for the Achievement. Aside from the stat points there were two things of interest for me. One was the Advanced Book of Warding and the other was the Charged Mana Crystal.
[Advanced Book of Warding (Beginner):
This Book details advanced forms of warding for the beginning stages of learning how to ward.]
[Charged Mana Crystal:
This Crystal is a Mana storage in it's charged form.
A Mana Crystal can hold a charge of Mana and can be used as a battery.]
Both of the Items seemed quite useful. The Book would help me improve my warding skills, but what held my interest was the crystal. Because if I had several of them, I could charge them up when I don't currently need mana so that when I need the mana, like with the project that I just finished, I could use the stored Mana in order to finish faster. It would also be quite useful in case of a fight or simply as a battery for something that needed a constant supply of Mana. I would have to see that I got my hands on preferably a constant supply of them.
Before I lost focus however, I concentrated back on what I had set myself as goal for now. Ascending a Level so that I could hide my wings and walk around without standing out like a sore thumb and attracting all sorts of attention, for while I might be able to play them off as cosplay around humans, that wouldn't fly with the various supernatural creatures. And I didn't want to attract attention to my self this early. Because while it would probably be inevitable once I reached a certain level, I wanted to be able to defend myself and be strong enough that I could stay independent.
I didn't really fancy being forced to join a faction for protection and currently my biggest advantage in that area was that literally no one knew that I existed. And I wanted to keep it that way for some time.
And so I focused back on what I could do in the now. Mainly training my Skills and going through my Library.
A bit over an hour later I had leveled my Grip Skill through constant use up, which also gave me a good chunk EXP. I had noticed that each use of the skill gave me half an percent towards the completion, meaning that if I used the smallest amount of MP possible by summoning something small like a single piece of paper I could do that 28 times before I had to wait nine minutes for my MP to regenerate. Doing that for four times leveled the ability up for the first time, but what I noticed quickly after, was that now it only gave half as much progress, meaning that it doubled the time it took do so. I assume that it will be the same for the next stage, but it could take even longer. However that wasn't an immediate concern of mine and so something that could wait for later.
For now I had leveled my Grip Skill up to the Adept Level. The Leveling was rewarded with five hundred EXP for reaching Apprentice Level and thousand EXP for reaching Adept Level and causing a normal Level up.
[Grip: (Apprentice) reached!]
[You gained 500 EXP]
[Grip: (Adept) reached!]
[You gained 1000 EXP]
[You have Leveled up x1]
[Level: 5 (20%)]
That was one of the requirements in order to ascend, but there were still others that I had to achieve, like reaching Adept Level for the Flight Skill. But to be honest, that was something that I preferred to practice in the night when it was dark outside since it considerably lessened the chance of being spotted. For while I most probably could do it in broad daylight so long as I stayed behind the wards, the space was a bit cramped for flying and I didn't want to temp Luck.
It would still be several hours until it became dark outside, so I had time to kill, which brought my mind back to a problem that had been hanging around in the back of my head for the last two days. The question of how I would get a steady income of money. I had thought of maybe doing some arts and crafts and selling it over the internet, but it wasn't something that convinced me. Other things like being a YouTuber were also out since I was aware that it was actually something quite time intensive and not something that seemed feasible for my situation. Not to mention the lack of recording equipment that I had.
There was the Idea of writing something, but I had no Idea what I would write about, so for now that Option was out as well. I briefly entertained the Idea of doing something with the human criminal underworld but dismissed the Idea just as quickly. If I ever planned to get involved I wanted to be at a bit of a higher Level, with having ascended to at least Level three since it was from that point on that a Fireangel was definitely stronger than a human physically. And since I was in Japan I wouldn't have to worry about guns so much because of the cultural bias against firearms, but if I ever branched out I would have to be more careful. But since that was something I wouldn't be doing right now, I didn't yet have to concern myself with that. Perhaps later.
But then I had an Idea of what I might be able to do.
I might be able to do a little freelance bounty hunting against strays, for the human organizations since I didn't want to reveal myself to the factions yet, which would happen if I were to go through their channels for that. But if I were to do so through the magician Guilds or perhaps even the church I wouldn't really tip them of to my existence yet.
Absently noting that the whole thought process netted me another WIS point I decided that that would be what I was going to do so I concentrated on other things for now, like getting fighting skills. For that purpose I headed back to the Library to look through what I could find in there.
Several hours later I emerged from the basement to find that night had fallen and it was dark outside, which meant that now was time to practice my Flight Skill.
I had some measure of success with finding skills that could be helpful while fighting, but I also looked through the Guidebook and learned several things about fighting for Fireangels that would come in useful at a later date. Things like what the Racial Skills achieved with later Levels were, like being able to form solid weapons made from fire from Level seven on or just generally summoning fire from Level five on. Though I also noted that the higher the Level, the stronger the skills that I get access to, which in of itself is not surprising, the sheer level of overkill you can reach especially with all of them combined is just crazy. But that wasn't my concern for some time still so I would happily ignore that for now.
But otherwise there was also some information that could come in handy in regards to fighting but there was one find that had me conflicted and that was a skill book.
The reason why that had me conflicted was because every other skill that I had come across was something that I had to learn myself from scratch like cooking or warding, but there were several skill books there that basically offered a shortcut for getting the skills. I had to put actual work and effort into the other skills but these straight out skipped that effort much like a Game would. So far the Gamer System had been really on the down low in regards to mostly everything with a lot staying true to how other persons would experience it as well, with a few exceptions like for example the Inventory. But now there was such a massive break in the whole thing that it didn't feel quite as natural. On the other hand I could understand why these skills were in the form of skill books, for they pertained to basic combat and would imbed those skills in my muscle memory. The skills, while basic, aren't really something that I could just learn on my own since it would require someone to actively teach them to me, a step that the skill books would skip.
In the end I decided to let them be for now and to concentrate on leveling my Flight Skill.
[Flight: (Apprentice) reached!]
[You earned 500 EXP]
Leveling the Skill up even once was something that ended up taking nearly two and a half hours of just repetitive flying, resting and then flying again. Though I did get much better with both starts and landings in that time. By now I could take off with a single strong flap of my wings without having to jump off, though it was slightly draining and made the whole procedure take a few more minutes, though it wasn't much. During the practice I could feel the muscles for the wings gradually strengthen, a result of my unique Fireangel physiology, and that let me guess that after ascending that wouldn't be the case anymore. Reaching the Adept Level however was not possible within the same night since that step would take seven hours and the night wasn't that long. While I could relatively easily go several days long without sleep, it was preferable to have a healthy amount of sleep since things would get more and more exhausting the longer I went without sleep. So after another two hours I went back inside to sleep and do the rest of the flying the next night.
After I woke up the next day however, it left me with another dilemma. The decision of what I was going to do with those Skill Books.
It took some inner debating while I prepared breakfast and even during it, but in the end I decided to put my distaste of Skill Books aside and use them, since the Skills would be both advantageous and necessary. I was after all going to end up in several fighting situations and I would, especially in the beginning, need those fighting skills in order to be able to fight at all after all. It was still going to be rather though in the beginning, so I didn't need to make it even harder by going into those situation without being able to fight. That would just be the epitome of stupidity.
Going down into the magical basement actually made me slightly nervous since the thing with the Skill Books would be a completely new, foreign and intrusive experience, after all, they would imprint those moves straight into my muscle memory. That classified to me as intrusive.
Still, I had decided that I would need it, so I just had to suck it up. Keeping that in mind I took the books out of my shelf and looked at the pop-ups.
[Basic Unarmed Combat Skill Book:
This Skill Book gives you the needed muscle memory and training experience necessary in order to be able to use Basic Unarmed Combat Skills.]

With a final sigh I straightened my spine and picked Yes for all four of those Skill Books.
For a short second nothing happened but then the Books started glowing before dissolving into fragments that after another short second shot into my chest. Then an excruciating pain engulfed my whole being for several long moments shooting through my body and making my muscles burn while a throbbing headache formed behind my temples. The Pain held for several more moments before it abated as abruptly as it came, leaving my body sore and aching and a milder form of the headache in my head behind. With another sigh, this one more pained than the previous one, I sat down and leaned with my back against the shelf I had taking the books from while ignoring the Achievement that popped up. This was not something that I had expected to happen, though I guess looking back it could be a side effect from suddenly gaining knowledge and muscle memory in a single moment rather than learning it manually and gradually over time. But in the end it only cemented my dislike for Skill Books. Oh I would still use them if necessary, but if it wasn't necessary I would much rather learn those skills manually myself.
Taking another moment I let the new knowledge settle and then mentally went over what I knew now. I had gained the knowledge and experience needed to be able to use basic moves from all four categories of combat, which meant that I could beat an ordinary thug in skill as well as use most of the basic bladed and blunt weapons like knifes, daggers, swords, clubs, maces and batons. More obscure weapons were left out since they really didn't count as basic anymore. In regards to projectile combat I could use smaller firearms and a few of the bigger ones as well as knowing how to theoretically use things like fireballs or light spears, things that are on the supernatural side of the spectrum. Only theoretically since I don't have access to the needed energies. So far at least. According to what I had read in the Guidebook it was possible for Fireangels to convert one type of energy into another type of energy once they reached Level 18 and once they reached Level 20 they could manipulate all sorts of magic, even those that are not their own. That were crazy overpowered abilities but the catch was that Level 18 is the highest know Level to ever be reached, so the chances of actually attaining these powers are slim at best. The powers of the later Levels were described but the descriptions were only the bare bones and lacked any sorts of details. The only reason there was anything listed at all was because these descriptions were based on myths and not actual facts.
And so while it wasn't possible for me currently, it was possible in the grand scheme of things and for angels, both pure and fallen, light spears were basic abilities and since they could be, and often were, be used as projectiles I gained the needed theoretical knowledge.
So in the end, despite the pain of it all and the distasteful method of it, using these Skill Books had been well worth it. They gave me a base upon which I can build my skills up while also making me capable of surviving the fights needed to make the skills grow in the first place. A Stray wasn't likely to leave me alive just so that I could later come back again, after all.
With another sigh I glanced at the Achievement that I had gained through the whole thing, which upon closer inspection, were actually two Achievements.
[New Achievement!
Many do it this way!
Congratulation for using at least one Skill Book. Most people with a Gamer ability gain many Skills through the use of Skill Books and while they are a lot rarer for you, it is still an option.

[New Achievement!
Watch out, I can throw a punch!
Congratulations on learning basic fighting skills. They are just basics and are nothing fancy or something like that, but the basics are important nonetheless.
Reward: Fighting Gloves, Basic Combat Knife, + 1 STR]
The Skill Book was something that I didn't think I would use but I was still going to keep it in my Inventory in case it would prove useful at some point. The other two Rewards were significantly more important in my eyes. The Fighting Gloves were useful for hand to hand combat while the Combat Knife was a bladed weapon that I could also use for combat. It also meant that I wouldn't have to go out and buy one, which probably would be… problematic. Now that wasn't a problem and both the gloves and the knife were put into my Inventory in the weapon category since I didn't need them now.
I then continued to lie there for half an hour before I finally got up again and decided to go through the basic movements, basic katas, for unarmed combat to actively familiarize myself with the skills till it was time for lunch.
Hours later in the late afternoon I had moved on to bladed weapon combat with a few of the sharper kitchen knifes doing the same that I had been doing the rest of the morning and early afternoon. The whole thing had actually netted me another few stat points, one in STR and one in VIT, since I had also included a bit of blunt weapon combat with a small metal pole that I had conveniently found in my normal basement. And since I was pretty sure that it hadn't been there before, I was just going to assume that it was added by either the System or Lucina.
[{ True ;) Here take another point! + 1WIS }]
So that was that. By now I had gotten a feeling for the basic fighting moves which made me a bit more confident for any potential fights I could be in in the near future, though I had yet to practice with any projectile weapons since I didn't have any on hand and trying to get any would involve far to much red tape and scrutiny considering the strict Japanese gun laws. Trying to get a crossbow would probably be more logical but I would have to research the regulations and laws for them in Japan before I try to get something like that because the possibility of not knowing anything about the laws and then getting caught with something like that sounds like far too much hassle and trouble to be worth it.
Deciding that that was something to do later I put it on my mental To do list and moved on.
It was pretty late in the afternoon so I went to my kitchen to do a bit more cooking since it had been a few days since I prepared the last dishes and I wanted to use this chance to both practice cooking a bit more and preparing more food for my Inventory. The used dishes had also been accumulating in the kitchen sink and so I first started on cleaning those up so that I had a clean and proper space to work with. That was something that I should probably make into a habit, cleaning up after myself, so that I didn't have to do what I did now before I could start.
But once that was out of the way I looked at the ingredients and recipes that I had available and what I could try to make with them.
In the end I decided for several different dishes since I noticed that eating the same thing over and over again got boring and bland and I wanted to mix up what I eat. The first thing I made were several stacks of pancakes that I, once ready, added to different syrups so that there was a bit variation between the dishes. Next I tried my hand at a few more asian dishes with rice as opposed to the previously rather western cuisine. Included with that were a few Onigiri with different fillings and I tried my hand a bit of Risotto and with the left over rice I tried a bit of fried rice. Nearing the end of my cooking session I made a few basic stews with the leftover ingredients that I had not yet used up. After all was finished I cleaned the kitchen back up and ate one of my stews since I was rather hungry after several hours of cooking, not to mention the physical exercise I got from going through the Katas.
There was another reason for why I was cooking however.
While I was cooking I tried infusing a bit of my energy into the meals with varying success. For some dishes it worked better than for some others. The Onigiri for example was not made all that well for it since I noticed that the energy needed to be slowly mixed into it with a sort of seeping effect, and while it probably ispossible to do that with Onigiri, I don't yet have the needed level of control over my energy to do that. The best results were in fact with the pancakes because there the energy could slowly seep into the dough while I was preparing it. Following those observations I am pretty sure that the success has to do with the method and rate of adding the energy to the dishes. A gradual pace while having to be in nearly constant contact over the entire duration seemed to work best. Because of that I was going to be trying it again tomorrow since I then planned to bake both cake and muffins to have a bit more sweet stuff as both dessert, snack, breakfast and for afternoon tea or coffee. Though admittedly I am more of a hot chocolate person.
But despite the initial difficulties I had I noticed that it was worth it. The food where I did that was far more nourishing than the one where I did not. I also noticed that the augmented food seemed to give a bit of a small boost towards the restoration and regeneration of energies. Furthermore the food seemed to taste better. So in general it seemed that it was going to be a practice that I was going to continue while also working on refining it. I probably would have continued for the taste alone, honestly. I was already thinking about wether or not I could use it while preparing drinks, though I think that I will need to refine my control a lot more in order to properly do it.
Following that observation another Achievement popped up.
[New Achievement!
Cooking, but Supernatural!
Congratulation for successfully adding energy into food. You are still in the beginning stages of this art but you can already see the benefits of it.
Reward: Book on Energy Control (Beginner), Basic Recipe Book (Apprentice)]
The Rewards were again things that would be useful for me, the Recipe Book to improve my cooking in general and the one on energy control would be useful for several things. General improvement of my control but it is also highly useful in many other areas, not just for my cooking though it applies for that as well.
I also noticed that the books are on different levels. According to what I saw when I improved my racial skills Beginner is the very first and lowest stage, the stage where you begin. Then comes the Apprentice stage where you're not quiet a beginner anymore but you are still not adept at it yet, which is the next stage. What comes after the Adept stage I'm not sure yet since I haven't gotten any of my skills to that level yet, so in regards to that I will have to wait and see. But I also remember that I got as a reward for my first Achievement, Flimsy, but present!, I got an advanced book that was still marked as part of the beginner stage and seeing as I got a basic book that was part of the apprentice stage I'm guessing that there are different levels in these stages, basic and advanced. I'm not sure if there are any different levels in the stages but right now I don't think so. But no matter if there are any more levels, these books are going for now into my Inventory though I might put them into my Library and Kitchen later.
That whole thing also got me thinking, because so far I have just been calling my energy simply energy, but that is a rather broad term, considering that angels used either light or holy energy while devils used demonic energy, which were actually named such, while Yokai used Ki. I wouldn't call my energy Fire energy either since it is different from just general fire or fire magic, for while it is based a lot around fire, it is also geared around heat, not to mention the other abilities that you unlock like Telekinesis and Telepathy. It all seems to be more Energy based, like as a basic building stone of the universe kind of energy and that makes it really hard to properly label it. It doesn't necessarily life energies like Ki does and it doesn't need mathematical equations like human magic does. It isn't like electricity that most technology uses, it is something different. The best I that I can currently think of would be something like Aether but that isn't it either, it doesn't feel quite right, though so far it is the closest term to describing what sort of energy my energy is. In the end I will probably look through the Guidebook if the other Fireangels had any way to call their energy.
Putting that matter aside for now I looked back outside and it was definitely dark outside. Not surprising considering that it was already late in the evening since I had spent several hours cooking. Still, it was time to practice flying some more to hopefully Level up the flying skill this night. I had already calculated that it would take seven hours of constant practice, like I did the night prior. But since I had a bit of a late start into the night it would most likely be starting to dawn when I was through, so if I had to decide if I was going to pull an all nighter and Level up so that I could ascend or if would break it off before that and get some sleep. Something to decide when it got that far if continuing was worth it or not, though so far I was leaning towards continuing throughout the night, just so that I could finally ascend and be able to actually go out. While I was flying I could also continue pondering the name situation.
[Flight: (Adept) reached!]
[You earned 1000 EXP]
So that was what I did. I leveled up my Flying Skill while pulling an all nighter though I did not reach a satisfactory conclusion in regards to the naming problem. Still, I was now, on the front of the Skill requirements, ready to Ascend using the Ascension Gem. For that I went back into my magic basement, after eating a breakfast of saturated Pancakes with a mixture of maple syrup and strawberry syrup.
Down in the basement I cleared an area, positioned myself in the middle of it and then pulled the Ascension Gem out of my Inventory.
[Ascension Ritual: 1=2
Requirements: Grip (Adept) [x]; Flight (Adept)[x]; Ascension Gem [x]
The Requirements are all met. Do wish to trigger the Ascension?
Please note that it will drain all of your SP and MP
[Y/N]
Staring at the screen that popped up I once again went over everything mentally before steeling myself and pressing the Yes button.
Despite having steeled myself for it I wasn't really prepared for the feeling of having all of my energy forcefully drained, causing me to collapse on the floor, my wings flaring out behind me. This was swiftly followed by a sensation of having needles and pins all over my skin while something ethereal rose inside me making me feel weightless for a moment before the energy receded again and gravity crashed back into me again. The feeling of hitting the floor again made me realize that I was actually floating during this whole process. Then my wings flared again while a blinding red light spread from them making me reflexively close my eyes. When I opened them again everything was back to how it was previously except for the feeling of being not quite bothered by gravity as before.
Spreading my wings again I noted that while folding back towards my back it felt like I had the option of 'folding' for a lack of a better word, the wings into my back, effectively hiding them in the process. The only problem I had for now was that it cost me a bit of SP and MP, both of which were still drained. So I would have to wait a few minutes before I could try it out.
Sitting up I winced at how empty my reserves were and after dragging myself over to the shelves with the books and pillows I leaned back against them and got myself comfortable. I could feel that, despite the fact that I had just eaten before triggering the ritual, it would be good for me to eat something again and so I pulled an Onigiri out of my Inventory while I sat back and looked at what had changed on my status screen and with my Racial Skills.
