Chapter 4

A Rocky Start!

Back on the trail, our heros were on the route to Pewter City. Speed was looking at a map as the others were following behind. Leaf groaned as she walked beside Speed.

Leaf: Speed, we've been walking for hours. Are we getting any closer to Pewter City?

Speed: I think… I think we're getting close.

Lay: That's what you said last time and that was two hours ago.

Shinx, Squirtle, Vaporeon all yawn, board out their minds. Speed kept on looking through the map as they all kept on walking. Leaf huffs as she crosses his arms.

Leaf: He doesn't know how to read a map for his life.

Lay: It would've been nice if we had a map before. He bought it from some trainer for 500. Wasn't really worth anyways.

Speed: Well my mom didn't give us any maps.

Leaf: Neither did mine. I wonder why.

Back at the Pallet Town, Hoja and Nella were having tea. Hoja then remembered something.

Hoja: Did we ever give the kids their maps?

Nella looked at Hoja as her eyes widened.

Nella: F*k!

Back on the route, Speed shrugged his shoulders as they kept walking.

Speed: If I'm right Pewter City should be at this left turn.

He turned right, smacking face first into a sign. His travel mates and Pokemon all sweat dropped at his stupid.

Speed: That happened twice now!

Lay: Maybe you should pay attention where you're going next time.

Leaf: So you don't run into something else, dummy.

Speed stuck a toung at Least as she does it back. Shinx wakes up from his boredom as he looks up at the sign. He smiles before making Speed look at the sign.

"Pewter City"

He smiled before jumping up in excitement.

Speed: See! Told you I knew where I was going!

Leaf rolled her eyes as Lay chuckled.

Leaf: Yeah, yeah let's just go.

The team all go into the rocky city. It was filled with plenty of hills and rocks alike. There were plenty of Rock and Ground types around. Speed saw a Geodude hop up to and gave him a high five. He took out his Pokedex and pointed at the Geodude.

Geodude: The Rock Pokemon

Geodudes are often acted as ruff and tumble Pokemon, but as they age they seem to calm down while keeping their old selves.

Speed: This place is awesome! Now this is how you start a journey. I'm already feeling that I can be the best Pokemon Trainer.

Leaf nudges him in arm as they walk around the city.

Leaf: Well you actually have to win the gym battle before you can call yourself the best Pokemon Trainer.

Speed: Well me and my Pokemon are going to show everyone what we're made of. Right Shinx?

Shinx jumps up and throws his paws up.

Shinx: Shinx! (Yeah!)

They both then started sprinting to the gym.

Lay: Guys! Shouldn't we get some sleep it seems pretty late.

Speed: No time! The faster we can get the gym badge, the faster we can get to the league!

Leaf: Yeah, but we've been walking all day!

They both followed behind the two Pokemon and trainer as they arrived at the first gym. Speed smiled to his ears as he took his two pokeballs out. He led both Bulbasaur and Rattata out.

Speed: Ok guys. This is it, this is where we make our mark! Are you ready?

Bulbasaur waved his vines like he's striking them, Shinx charged up his electricity and Rattata sharpened his fang. They all stood behind Speed, ready for battle.

Speed: Then let's do this!

They all ran head first into the door… no literally ran head first into the door.

Speed: Ouch! What?

Speed tried pulling on the handle, but it wouldn't budge so he tried pushing. Nothing.

Speed: Bulbasaur Vine Whip!

Bulbasaur tried using his vines, but all that did was leave little scratches.

Leaf: Speed it's closed.

She pointed at the closed sign on the door. Speed groans as it is slouched to the ground. Seeing him sad, his Pokemon rubbed onto him. He gave them a small smile as he patted them on the head.

Speed: It's fine guys. I'm just a little bummed out.

Lay: I told you it was quite late, but you were too excited.

Speed looked to the horizon seeing the sun setting in the distance.

Speed: Now that you mentioned it. It is pretty late.

Leaf shakes her head as she gives him a hand on his feet.

Leaf: Let's just go to the Pokemon Center and rent a room.

The team arrives at the Pokemon Center, seeing Nurse Joy typing on the computer.

Lay: Hey! Aunt Joy!

Nurse Joy peeked over her computer seeing Lay and smiled.

Joy: Hello, Lay! It's so nice to meet you.

Speed: Wait, she's your Aunt?

Lay: Yeah, this is Aunt Joy on my great Aunt Mom's joy side.

Both Pokemon and humans were all confused. Smoke was starting to come out of their head and Leaf's hat popped up letting out even more smoke.

Speed: Can we…just book a room.

Joy: Of course you can. That will be 10, please.

Speed paid for all of them as they walked to their rooms. The two and Speed's Pokemon still having feeling a bit on the 'what the f*k' side. Lay finally then got them back to their senses.

Lay: Hey! You guys can stop blank staring now. We got to our room.

Speed: Sorry, we just lost consciousness for a second.

Leaf: Yeah, don't worry about it.

But on the inside they both were still shocked on how big his family is. Lay shrugged it off and they all entered into their room. They laid their bags onto the floor and flopped into bed.

Leaf: Finally! It's felt like forever since I've slept in a bed.

Speed: Why did I think we needed to beat the gym this late.

They snuggled into the bed, drooling in pure comfort when Lay got their attention.

Lay: Umm… guys. There's only two beds.

This got their attention as they sat up seeing that there were only two beds and three people. The biggest anime cliche.

Speed: Um… so. Who's gonna get the beds?

Leaf: Yeah… who?

Lay: Could be anyone.

They all look at each other before getting into battle stances.

Speed: Shinx let's do this!

Lay: Vaporeon! Take em' down!

Leaf: Squirtle, show these boys who's boss!

They all let out their individual Pokemon. Shinx jumped from Speed's shoulder while the other two let out their pokeballs.

Speed: Ok buddy! Use Spark on Squirtle!

Shinx charged himself with electricity and charged at Squirtle.

Leaf: I don't think so! Squirtle, Bubble!

Squirtle fired bubbles out of his mouth causing Shinx to have to dodge past them. Leaving him open for an attack by a Water Gun by Vaporeon.

Lay: Can't let you guys have all the fun, right?

Vaporeon stands beside her trainer as Shinx gets back up with a glare. Speed gave him a smirk as Shinx returned to his side. Leaf stretched her arms as Squirtle. They were coming for that bed.

Everyone: Let's do this/(Let's do this!)

All Pokemon charged in with their respective attacks ready for a brawl.

They all eventually made trust and decided that Lay and Leaf get the beds while Speed will just have a pallet on the floor. They let their other Pokemon out, Rattata sleeping on the chair while Venonat slept on his back, Squirtle sleeping on Leaf's side, as Vaporeon slept on Lay's side, Koffing was just floating in the corner, and finally the spark Pokemon was on its trainer's stomach.

They were all sleeping except Leaf who felt bad about having Speed sleep on the floor. She looked down to see him snoring as his chest lifted up and down with Shinx. She kept on looking at him through the night.

It was finally daylight outside as the team was still sleeping when there was a rumble shaking everything. They all immediately woke up in shock.

Speed: What's going on?!

Leaf: I don't know!

He looks over to Leaf's bed, seeing she wasn't there before turning to his side seeing Leaf was beside him. In his pallet. Sus.

Speed: Why aren't you in my pallet?

Leaf blushes a dark crimson before she stands up, trying to play it off.

Leaf: It was rumbling so I came to your side because I was scared. Yes, scared.

Shinx narrows his eyes at her in suspicion.

Shinx: (Now that's suspicious.)

They didn't have time to contemplate what happened when another earthquake happened.

Lay: Ok now what is going on!

They all got dressed, returned their pokemon, the boys being put out so Leaf could change and they exited the Pokecenter. They came to Pewter City mines seeing the workers running out. They came to one who was on his knees with his hat off.

Lay: Sir! What's going on here? Why with all the panic and the earthquakes?

Miner: We we're doing some work in the mines when suddenly some earthquakes started making a racket through it. We barely got out before the mines started to collapse. There are still some people in there and we can't get in.

The team looked at the entrance of the mine seeing that it was blocked off by some rocks. They then hear screams of terror inside.

Miner: Help! Help! We're stuck in here! Someone please help.

The team was already on the move. Leaf and Lay sent out Venonat and Koffing who in turn used Tackle on the rocks. Speed sent in Rattata and Shinx who used Hyper Fangs and Bite. The trainers were pushing onto them, but they didn't make any impact.

Lay: We're not even doing anything!

Speed: We have to keep trying!

?: Let me handle this!

They all jumped out the way as giant rock slams into the cave entrance. They all were coughing profusely when Koffing absorbed all the dust. Lay pat him on the head, smiling.

Lay: Good job, buddy.

Koffing: Koffing (Thanks!)

An Onyx slither towards them. Their Pokemon got in front prepared for an attack. A person throws his hand up stopping them from attacking.

?: Hold on! We're on your side.

It was a tan man who had brown spiky hair. Also he wasn't wearing a shirt, showing his abs.

Brock: The name Brock!

Lay: Oh! Your Pewter City's gym leader!

Once Speed heard the gym leader he immediately ran in front of Brock.

Speed: Can we battle?!

Everyone sweat dropped as Brock stepped back a little.

Brock: Um… I will once we get those people out.

Speed realized what he did and rubbed the back of his head.

Speed: Right, right.

They all enter the cave, their pokemon walking in front. Speed and Leaf let out Bulbasaur and Squirtle both having advantage over Rock and Ground Pokemon.

Speed: It's pretty dark here. I can barely see where I'm going.

Leaf: Yeah. Wish we had some light in here.

This gave off an idea in Lay's head.

Lay: Speed, have Shinx store enough electricity to light up this cave.

Speed: Good idea, Lay! Shinx, do you think you can do it?

Shinx nods as he starts storing up electricity. His body had sparks going around him as conducted more and more until he was a giant light bulb, lighting the cave.

Speed: Yeah! Good job Shinx!

Speed went to pet him as the others yelled for him.

Leaf: Wait Speed?!

Too late! Speed already touched Shinx and he was hit with hundreds of volts of electricity. Everyone cringed at his pain as he yelled out. When it was finally done Speed was all charged and his head was sticking out in different directions.

Speed: Now I know how coal feels like…

Brock picked him up and put an arm around his shoulder.

Brock: Let's continue. We got to find those people.

The team and gym leader continue on down the cave, Shinx leading the way. Speed had to be carried by Brock through the caves due to him being paralyzed for a few minutes.

Lay looked over to the rock type gym leader. He decided to try to make some small talk.

Lay: So Brock. What do you do when you're not the Gym leader?

Brock looks over to the future nurse as he smiles.

Brock: My family runs a family daycare. We take care of all Pokemon that are hurt or need a family. It's my dream to take care of all Pokemon while also fighting alongside them.

Lay looks at him as he looks down.

Lay: That's what I want to do. Minus the Pokemon battling. I want to take care and help Pokemon, to see them healthy and thrive.

Brock pats Lay on the back when another earthquake comes inside the cave. The stellectipes on the ceiling started falling. This also unparalyzed Speed.

Speed: Huh? What's going on?

Brock pushed him out of the way of a falling stellectipes.

Brock: Everyone get down!

Everyone booked it in different directions, dodging any stellectipes that were coming down. They all found cover as more came down. Speed held onto all his Pokemon tight as Leaf crouched behind him with Venonat in her arms.

As the stellectipes finally died down everyone came out of cover.

Lay: Is everyone ok?

Speed: Yeah I think we're all fine.

Speed checked both Rattata and Shinx seeing that they have no bruises. After they all regrouped there was then another earthquake.

Speed: Not again!

The floor started rumbling as cracks appeared.

Brock: Everyone move, now!

They all jumped out of the way as the floor bursted open. Rubble came barreling towards the team. Speed quickly sent out Bulbasaur, who immediately used his vines to cut through the rock. As the rubble cleared they felt more rumbling as Nidorans and Nidorinos came out the hole. They started swarming through the cave digging more holes.

Brock: What are all these Nidorinas and Nidorinos doing here?!

Speed: I don't know, but I do know that they must be trouble.

Speed took out his Pokedex and pointed at the Nidos.

Nidorina and Nidorino: The Poison Pokemon

Nidorina and Nidorino are aggressive pokemon that are quick to anger. Once angered their spines will bristle and will go all out on their foes.

Speed looked up seeing that the Pokemon were all MENICLY staring at them.

Leaf: Why are they just staring at us?

Brock: I don't know, but keep your guard up.

They then heard people coming out of the hole. They thought they were other workers.

Speed: Hey! You guys got to get out of here.

?: On the contrary my friend it is you who should get out of here.

Coming out of the hole is none-other than Team Rocket with Amanda, the red haired rocket, leading them.

Amanda: Oh if it isn't the twerps.

Speed/Leaf: Amanda?!

Lay: You know this girl?

Amanda: Oh! You made a new friend. Well let me introduce myself. I'm Amanda of Team Rocket and right now we have a job to do. Now.

She snapped her fingers and the grunts all lined up with the Nidorinos and Nidorinas.

Amanda: Get out of our way, please.

The group sees their out number by a lot. Speed sweat dropped when Brock came up front.

Brock: I may not know what you're doing, but something in the likes of Team Rocket is never good. So if I may ask you to leave or are things gonna get difficult?

Brock looked down onto Team Rocket, but Amanda only chuckled.

Amanda: Well looks like you won't comply with my obligations. Boys!

The grunts sent out their Nidorinos and Nidorinas in full charge of the heros. Brock sent a smirk as he sent out the rock snake himself, Onix. It came out with a screech knocking away a few Nidorinos who tried attacking it. Onix used Rock Throw, smashing into Nidorinos.

Speed smiled as he took out a PokeBall.

Speed: Come on guys! Let's help them out! Let's go Bulbasaur!

Leaf/Lay: Right! Go Squirtle/Vaporeon!

They threw their respective Pokemon out as they screeched out. Shinx jumped from Speed's shoulder landing between Bulbasaur and Rattata. They all charged into battle Shinx leading it with a Bite. Bulbasaur used Vine Whip on the enemy Pokemon as Vaporeon used Water Gun blasting all Nidorinas who tried to jump them.

Brock: Keep up the pressure guys!

Speed: Ok Shinx show em' what you got!

Shinx backflipped over a Nidorina before using Spark, making it faint. Nidorino tried to jump him, but was Tackled down by Venonat.

Shinx: Shin Shinx (Thank Rattata!)

Venonat: Venonat (Don't mention it.)

Amanda was starting to lose her cool seeing her men being owned by kids and by the rock type gym leader.

Amanda: Ugh! These twerps now it's my turn!

She sent out her Ekens who let out hiss, but was shell shocked when it saw deep glares from all the pokemon who have defeated all the Nidorinos and Nidorinas. It immediately retreated back to its PokeBall.

Amanda: Ugh! Team Rocket retreat we'll look for the artifact another time.

All of Team Rocket then started jumping down the hole, fleeing from the team.

Speed: Wahoo! You guys did awesome!

Speed congratulated his Pokemon. Shinx laughed as Rattata and Bulbasaur joined in the petting. Leaf was giving a treat to Venonat and Squirtle.

Leaf: Good job you two! You did great!

Lay was getting smothered by Koffing.

Lay: Koffing?! You did great too, but please I need to breathe!

Vaporeon puffed her cheeks before pushing Koffing away from Lay. Brock patted Onix on the head as he saw the three trainers. He looked at them as he visualized other people in the group. He smiles as it goes back.

Brock: Great work out their guy.

Lay: It was no problem! We'd always help when others are in trouble.

Leaf: I'm still wondering, what was Team Rocket looking for?

Speed: Whatever it is I don't think they're gonna find it with those knocked out Pokemon.

Brock: I might have to contact the police to keep checking on Team Rocket on the mines. Just in case they come back.

Speed then came to his side.

Speed: So while you're doing that. Can we have that gym battle?

Brock chuckles as Leaf facepalms.

Leaf: Speed… always thinking of a battle, but I also want to have the gym battle.

Brock: Well you did help me so of course we can have a gym battle.

Speed: Finally!

Speed jumped in the air, raising his fist.

Brock: Tomorrow. It's getting pretty late.

Speed immediately slammed face first into the ground as the other laughed.

Speed: Damn it.

Lay: Let's just get out of here.

They all started walking to the entrance of the mines, but what they didn't was a soft glow from the dirt. It was then covered by dirt before any of them could notice.

Speed: Well that was eventful.

Leaf: Well some of us were rushing in for a gym battle.

Speed: You wanted a gym battle too!

Leaf: Well I was more formal with my position.

Speed: Whatever. Get ready for the rocky road where the first match will start it!
