ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTEEN

"Gabby, baby." Matt whispered while he laid behind his wife, a tired groan almost immediately coming from her lips in response as he fought off a smile. "It's time to get up, we've gotta get ready for work." He encouraged, his hand sliding gently back and forth over her stomach as Gabby did what she could to not be pulled from her restful slumber, the woman evidently needing, or at least wanting, a bit more sleep before getting up for the day.

And with as exhausted as they both were from their travels, Matt couldn't entirely blame her.

Though their honeymoon in Italy had been perfect, that time together more than needed while they celebrated their marriage, the adjustment to coming back home had been a complete shock to the system. Maybe more so than either of them were expecting, certainly Gabby at least, as she was having a harder time getting used to the time change than he was. Especially seeing as how they hadn't been home all that long.

It was only yesterday afternoon when they arrived back in Chicago, Matt and Gabby being met by her parents at the airport before they brought them back home. And while it was great to see Ramon and Camila again, the two catching them up on some of their trip while also getting an update on how things had been here, with as tired as they were the older Dawsons knew not to stay very long. They were around just long enough to talk and help them get settled, as well as show them had they'd restocked their fridge for them earlier in the day so they wouldn't have to. Which was something that was greatly appreciated by the both of them.

But aside from their short visit, Matt and Gabby hadn't really done anything else. They hadn't seen anyone, or spoken to any of their friends except for Casey sending out a quick text to Severide letting him know they'd gotten home. Other than that, it had just been the two of them, the newlyweds making an effort to get to bed early as they knew today would be challenging, with it being their first day back at work. And they wanted to do everything in their power to help stave off at least some of the inevitable jetlag.

But if Gabby's demeanor now was any indication, their attempts at making their return home a smooth transition hadn't exactly gone in their favor, as even with the near eleven hours of sleep they'd gotten, Gabby wasn't ready to get up. And truthfully Casey wasn't either, his tired body feeling that same impulse to stay in bed and ignore the world around him.

For a split second he was questioning their decision of returning to work so soon after their trip, a part of him wishing they'd maybe waited a bit to give them a chance to reacclimate to their surroundings. But it was too late for that now as they'd already told the house, and the department, that they'd be returning today, meaning Matt had no choice but to get up out of their warm and comforting bed.

Which also meant making sure Gabby got up with him.

"Babe." He prompted once more while placing a soft kiss over her shoulder, the combination of his voice and his touch earning another groan from the woman resting beside him.

"I don't want to." She fought him, the almost child-like tone in her soft words telling him that tiredness hadn't gone away. And that alone made him feel a little bad for forcing her up, as it was becoming more and more clear how truly exhausted she was.

"I know, but we have to." He reminded her, while continuing to rub his hand gently along her stomach and side. "I'm gonna get up and get the shower going… We need to be out of here soon so we're not late." He continued on, hearing he grunt in displeasure before she began to stretch out her tired limbs, Matt moving out of the way as to not unintentionally get hit while a light laugh left his lips.

"I wanna stay here." She continued on, though from the sound of her voice he could tell she was becoming more alert. Even if she didn't want to.

"I know, me too." He told her, shifting back a bit when she started to roll over onto her back, Gabby bringing the covers with her as she made herself comfortable in this new position before she looked up to find her husband's eyes gleaming down at her, the two sharing a soft smile while he kept rubbing those soothing motions over her stomach. "Good morning." He added on, wanting to give her a proper greeting now that she was more awake.

And by the smile that graced her features, he could tell she appreciated it, Gabby nodding up at him while she lifted her hand to begin tracing over his arm. "Morning." She repeated, before he leaned down for a quick kiss. One that neither of them really wanted to end as moments like these reminded them both of their time together on their honeymoon, and how they had nothing to worry about except each other.

But they were both sent crashing back down to reality yet again when her alarm went off, Gabby sighing against him before he pulled back and reached over to shut it off, his warmth hovering over her body feeling like home to her before he returned to his position by her side.

"I guess we really do need to get up now." He said, watching as she scrunched her face up in distaste despite the small smile returning to her features. "Yeah, yeah I know.. But we've gotta get to work." He continued on, responding to her silent words before he moved to get another quick kiss. "So let me go start that shower for you, and we can get going."

She stole one more kiss from him before he started to get up, Matt tossing the covers off himself and pushing himself out of bed as he began to walk towards their bathroom. But the sound of his wife's voice soon stopped him.

"I want coffee."

Her simple statement caused him to laugh, Matt turning around to find her in the same position he'd left her in aside from the fact that she was now propped up on her elbows, her head cocked to the side a bit before he flashed her that signature Casey grin.

"I can get you coffee." He promised her easily. "We'll stop at that diner by the firehouse and get some." He added on, Gabby nodding thankfully before the soft look in her eyes turned into a much more intense one, Matt not missing the slight smirk that started to tug on her lips as it was clear the thoughts in her mind were shifting.

"And if you're gonna drag me out of bed, I want you in that shower with me."

Another chuckle escaped his throat before he almost immediately nodded, that request not something he'd ever need talked into as he reached down to begin peeling the t-shirt from his body.

"Yes dear." He agreed without issue, his own grin growing when he noticed her stares over his bare chest, before her eyes moved down to his lower half covered only by boxers. "But for me to join you, that means you need to get up." He pushed once more before turning and heading into their bathroom.

Matt barely got through the door before he heard her begin to make her way out of bed, the slight rustling coming from the other room bringing a smile to his face while he reached out to turn the water on as he knew that regardless of her exhaustion, she wouldn't miss the chance to come and shower with him, it taking only seconds before she got to him as he felt her wrap her arms around his waist and press her chest into his back.

They stood here in silence for a few lingering moments, the sound of the running water the only thing to be heard while Gabby nuzzled her body into his, holding onto him tightly while they waited for the water to warm up.

They'd both rather be asleep right now, he knew that. But it wasn't an option. And if they had to be awake, they were at least going to enjoy some of their last few moments alone together before having to head back to the firehouse.

And as far as he was concerned, this shower was the perfect way to do that.

Dawson and Casey walked hand in hand up the driveway to 51, their eyes taking in the building they hadn't seen in a couple weeks while the cool October air nipped at their skin, both of them just taking a moment to try and prepare for the day ahead as they were doing their best to get back into the mindset of a first responder. Though admittedly, Gabby wasn't thinking too much about work right now as all she was focused on was the feeling of his wedding ring pressing into her skin while they walked together.

It was something she hadn't gotten used to yet, not really, as there was still a moment of glee every time she was reminded of that wedding ring sitting on his finger. And she absolutely loved it. She loved that they now both had bands around their fingers, and even more so she loved what they symbolized. How they now had a tangible representation of just how much they meant to each other, something that the entire world was able to see.

And even though those wedding rings changed nothing about how they actually felt about each other, that didn't stop her from feeling practically giddy every time she took notice of them, as it was just yet another reminder of how she was now married to the greatest love of her life. And that thought would never not make her the happiest woman in the world.

"Gabby?"

Gabby was pulled from thoughts of her husband when she heard his voice, her head turning to see him watching her with an amused gleam in his eyes. One that told her this wasn't the first time he'd tried to get her attention.

"You alright over there?" He prodded while giving her hand a slight squeeze, the action only causing her smile to grow even wider as she felt the cool of his ring.

"Mhmm." She hummed before offering him a smile of her own. "I'm good."

Those few words caused his smile to widen before he nodded, Matt just glad to see her feeling a bit better now than she did this morning when he had to drag her out of their bed.

"Just thinking about my husband."

Casey let out a soft laugh before his head fell to the side a bit. "Well, I hope it's good thoughts."

"They are… I only have good thoughts about us." She assured him, offering him a gentle smile as he lifted their conjoined hands up and pressed a kiss to her skin, before the happy newlyweds continued on into the firehouse for the first time as husband and wife.

When they walked into the garage, they were surprised to be met by an empty room, the rigs and squad table completely abandoned as just like their walk inside, there was no one else around. And for the time, that was a little unusual as their friends and coworkers certainly should've been arriving by now.

But they didn't think much of it, not until they walked in through the double doors and found the common room completely vacant as well, Gabby's eyebrows furrowing in slight confusion as they came to a stop just outside the entrance, Matt looking up and down the hallway before returning his attention to Dawson.

"Where is everyone?" She questioned, seeing Matt shrug in response before they took a few more steps inside.

"I'm not sure." He answered truthfully, as he had no idea where any of the house was. Shift change hadn't happened yet, and by the state of the rigs out on the apparatus floor he knew no one was out on a call. So even if they'd managed to be the first ones from second shift here, the house shouldn't have been completely empty. But from what they could see, it was. "I figured some of the house would be here by now."

"Yeah, me too." Gabby mused as her eyes continued to move around the room, seeing the blinds to the conference room drawn. "If anything, I was expecting Shay to maul me the second we got here." She added on, earning a knowing smirk from her husband as he knew just how true her words were. How after not seeing one another for almost two weeks, the blonde paramedic would've wanted to be the first one to welcome her back.

But Shay, and everyone else, were nowhere to be found.

"Yeah, this is a bit weird." He continued on while stepping towards the conference room, Gabby following close behind him as he pulled the door open. "Surely at least some of them-"

"There they are!"

Casey and Dawson stopped abruptly in the doorway when they heard the sound of immediate cheers coming from their friends, their eyes wide while they took in everyone standing around in the conference room watching them while they clapped and yelled.

"Welcome back, you guys!"

"There's the married couple!"

Those greetings, and similar words, were heard from all their friends as Matt and Gabby let out a few laughs, their family at 51 evidently wanting to surprise them on their first day back. And it had worked, neither one of them expecting any sort of welcoming like this as it took only seconds for Shay to drag Gabby into her arms.

"You're finally home." Shay spoke, Dawson letting out a soft laugh as she hugged her friend. "Casey's not hiding you away anymore."

Matt let out a scoff before some of the guys came up to give him a hug, Gabby eyeing him in amusement before she gave her partner a squeeze. "I am, we're back home."

"Welcome back, Dawson!" Cruz spoke, coming in to get a hug as well once Shay had let her go, that soon being followed by similar greetings from almost everyone in the house.

All the first responders were beyond happy to see them, Matt and Gabby being passed around through the group until they'd made their way back to each other, Casey resting his arm around her shoulders while they all stood around in a circle.

"So, how was your trip?" Boden asked after a break in the conversation, Matt smiling wide before he nodded.

"It was amazing, we had such a good time." He replied, rubbing his hand along Gabby's arm before Shay all but pulled her away from him, Matt raising his eyebrows a bit as the entire group watched on in amusement while the older paramedic led Dawson towards the door.

"Sorry Casey, but I need some one-on-one time with my best friend, you've had her enough." She called back, earning a few more laughs from the entire room while Shay took Gabby into the common room, Matt shaking his head a bit as he had strong suspicion of what the topic of discussion would be between the two paramedics.

And it was everything Casey had no interest in talking about, certainly not around all their friends at least, as he knew the blonde was going to want all the more intimate details of his and Gabby's time away together. Especially since Shay and Gabby didn't have all that much time to talk during their trip, Matt knew she'd wanted to hear all about it now. He was just grateful Shay had taken her away from the crowd to do so.

"Shay took your wife, Lieutenant." Cruz teased after a moment.

"Yeah, that didn't take long." Herrmann added with a laugh. "She's been bouncing off the walls waiting for Dawson to get back, I'm surprised she didn't drag her away ten minutes ago." He finished, the crowd chuckling before Boden reached out to clasp Matt on the shoulder.

"It really is great to have you both back here, Casey." He told him, Matt nodding strongly as similar sentiments were repeated by the rest of the group.

"It's great to be back." He repeated, the Chief and Lieutenant sharing a sturdy look before the group began to break out around them, Matt saying a few more pleasantries before he grabbed his and Gabby's bags- the same ones that had fallen in all the chaos of Shay's greeting, and started making his way to the locker room.

Although he didn't get very far before he felt a presence behind him.

"So, you and Dawson seem… exhausted." Severide spoke as he caught up to Casey, Matt turning to see the sly grin resting over his features just as they got to the locker room. "I take it there wasn't much time for sleeping while you two were gone." He added on, shoving Matt's shoulder a bit as the truck Lieutenant glanced around to ensure they were alone before responding to his friend.

"Well, we are tired, you're right about that." He started, seeing the stupid grin resting over Kelly's face. "All that travel is no joke."

A soft scoff left Severide's lips, the man shaking his head a bit before responding. "That's not entirely what I was talking about." He replied, earning a knowing look from Casey before the man started to open his locker.

"I know you weren't. Although you do know you're just as bad as Shay, yeah?" He told him, Kelly letting out a soft laugh before he leaned his body against a few of the closed lockers, while Casey continued to put his and Gabby's things away.

"Okay all jokes aside, did you guys have fun?" Kelly asked him, as Matt glanced his way. "I know we talked a little bit, but everything went well for you guys on your trip?" He finished, seeing the way Casey was practically beaming before he spoke up.

"It did, we had a great time. The whole trip was incredible." He breathed out, honesty laced in his voice as Kelly gave him a nod. "It might've been the best time of my entire life."

"Really?" Severide asked, with an almost impressed tone.

"Mhmm… Getting to go and experience Italy, with my beautiful wife." He told him with a proud grin, seeing the smile that appeared over Kelly's face as well. "It was perfect. From beginning to end, the whole thing was amazing."

"That's great, Case. I'm glad… Though it will take some getting used to, hearing you call Dawson your wife." He teased him. "And from what I can tell, you're still as grossly in love with her as ever." He continued on. But Casey merely smiled without shame before closing up his locker.

"I would be a fool not to be." He replied easily, seeing Severide laugh once more in response. "But our honeymoon, it was so nice. Something we both definitely needed… But we're back, and ready to get into the swing of things around her again. Or at least I am." He joked, earning another smile from his friend. "I'm just glad to see the place didn't burn down without us while we were gone." He finished with a light smirk.

"It was close a few times." Severide played along. "But we are firefighters, so we know how to handle that sort of thing." He joked back, the two men sharing another chuckle before making their way out of the locker room and into the hallway, Matt silently hoping to have at least a little bit of time to settle in this morning before being needed out in the streets of Chicago.

Shay and Dawson walked down the sidewalk off a busy downtown street with coffee cups in hand, the paramedics navigating their way through the crowds of people before making a beeline towards their rig, both of them eager to get back into the ambulance and hopefully have a chance to head to the firehouse before being called out once more.

It had been almost nonstop for the paramedics since the start of shift this morning as they had just finished up on what was their third call of the day, 61 having been out of the house ever since they were first needed just a few minutes past shift change. To put it bluntly, it had been a hectic day for both of the medics. One that Gabby didn't necessarily feel ready for, as her body was still adjusting to the pace of being back home. But she was handling it all well enough, her experience telling her that once she had a few more shifts under her belt it would be like she never left.

"So, the moral of the story is, you're never allowed to leave again." Shay told her, Gabby tuning back in as her partner finished her many stories about the paramedic that had been covering for Dawson while she was away. And, more importantly, how the blonde couldn't stand him, as Shay had been complaining about the man for the last twenty minutes or so. "And if you do, I'm going with you."

Dawson laughed softly, her head shaking back and forth a bit as the pair came to a stop beside the ambulance. "Oh come Shay, it couldn't have been that bad. I was barely gone for two weeks." She reminded her, the older woman narrowing her eyes a bit before letting out a scoff. "And Anders has always been a decent paramedic."

"Were you not listening to what I just said? It was awful." She huffed, leaving Gabby to grin easily at her partner.

"It was only a couple shifts." She challenged, Shay rolling her eyes playfully while Dawson took a sip of her drink.

"Yeah, but they were shifts from hell. While you and Casey were over there sleeping your way through Italy, I was stuck here dealing with the world's weirdest paramedic." Shay spat, though her tone was light as Gabby bit down on the inside of her cheek. "I swear, that man is so strange. Maybe he's changed since you last saw him, I don't know. But him and I just did not get along."

"Did something happen?" Dawson asked, trying to recall back to all her friend's complaining and if she'd mentioned a specific incident or not. But to her knowledge, she hadn't, as Shay was mostly fed up with petty annoyances more than anything else.

"Not specifically, no. We just didn't work that well together." She replied with a displeased look covering her face. "And the way he acted with the rest of the house was just kind of odd." She added, those last few words really gaining Dawson's attention as her head fell to the side a bit.

"What do you mean?" She pressed, Shay pursing her lips together thoughtfully for a moment or two before she responded.

"I don't even know how to explain it, but it's like he was just kissing everyone's ass the entire time he was here. Kept talking about how much he loved it at 51, and how he'd love to be here permanently… It almost felt like he came in gunning for your job." She explained, Gabby's eyebrows furrowing deeply while she listened to her friend talk.

"Huh…" She spoke softly, Shay then waving her off before she spoke up once more.

"No one really entertained it, I mean we all know this spot is yours. It was just weird, it felt like he was trying to take advantage of the fact that you and Casey weren't here. The whole thing was strange, I don't know… Who knows what his deal was, but he was making the whole house uncomfortable." She finished, Gabby thinking over everything for a second before she nodded.

"Well, that is… weird. And I'm sorry you guys had to deal with it." She told her with a frown, Shay immediately shaking her head in response. "I didn't realize things were a little rough at 51 while we were gone."

"Yeah, no one wanted to tell you guys." Shay replied with a small smile. "It would kind of put a damper on the honeymoon. But it's fine babe, you don't need to be apologizing for anything. It could've been worse, and besides he's gone now so it doesn't matter." She finished lightly, Gabby mulling over her statement before offering her a grin, Shay almost instantly matching her look. "But enough about Anders and the firehouse, we've talked enough about them. I want to hear more about this honeymoon, we barely got a chance to talk about it. "

Dawson ducked her head slightly before taking a sip of her coffee, their previous conversation slowly forgotten when their focus shifted, the PIC knowing her friend's words held a lot of truth to them as despite Shay pulling her away earlier to get the more private details of her and Matt's trip, they hadn't actually had much time to talk before being called out for work. Much to Shay's dismay, as she was eager to hear all about how the Casey's occupied their time.

"Especially the part where you and Casey had sex on a boat."

Gabby choked down the last bit of liquid in her mouth at Shay's sudden words, Dawson wiping away some of the excess coffee that fell beneath her lip while the blonde laughed brightly at her expense. But Gabby couldn't even say she was surprised, as she knew there was no chance Shay wasn't going to circle back to their earlier conversation about her and Matt's… activities on their honeymoon.

Dawson had accidentally let the less than harmless comment slip out earlier when they were talking at the firehouse. How her and Matt had become a little more adventurous during their trip throughout Italy, some of which involved her and her husband having some intimate moments out on a boat that he'd rented for a few hours. But before Dawson could go into much more detail, the bells went off and they were signaled out to their first call of the day, leaving Shay to have to wait for a chance to bring it back up again.

And apparently, now was that chance, as Gabby knew from the moment she said those words earlier that Shay would never let her live it down, the blonde only proving her correct as she watched her with that familiar amused smirk resting over her face.

"Oh, don't give me that." Shay responded to Dawson's silence. "You're the one who brought it up. I was fine listening to all the boring hotel sex you two had been having until you dropped that bomb on me, so let me hear it… How's sex on the ocean?"

Gabby laughed softly, heat filling her system as she was sure passersby were listening in on her and Shay's conversation. But the older paramedic didn't seem to care one bit while she kept her expectant eyes on her friend, Gabby's bottom lip falling in between her teeth as she silently debated on just how much to say to her friend.

"You really wanna know?" Dawson asked her, Shay eyeing her before she gave her a sturdy nod. "It was… exhilarating." She breathed out, the blonde smirking knowingly while Gabby fought off the urge for her smile to widen. "Definitely a highlight of our trip."

"I'm sure it was, you little slut." She joked proudly, Gabby coughing out a breath as she caught the curious stares of a few people walking by. But they just kept on going, the paramedic shaking her head a bit before reaching over to shove Shay's arm. "I know you two have a history of not caring where you sleep together… Take the back of this rig for example." She continued to tease her mercilessly. "But I guess a part of me is just a little surprised that Casey was fine with you two out in the open like that. We both know how… protective he is over you." She added with a smirk, Dawson sinking her teeth down into her lip once more, while feeling her stomach start to tighten a bit at the memory of her and Matt together on that boat.

"Yeah, I know he is." She mused, before a devilish grin crossed her features. "But that's what made it so much better." She carried on without missing a beat, Shay's mouth parting open as the abruptness of Dawson's words caught her off guard.

"You really are such a little whore." Shay got out, Gabby laughing softly while her friend shook her head in her direction. "I'm so proud."

"Uh huh." Dawson told her just as they heard Main come through their radios.

"61?"

Gabby picked up the radio that was strapped to her chest, pressing down on the button before she responded, both the paramedics knowing their previous conversation was now put on hold.

"Go for 61." She replied, while Shay started to down the rest of her drink.

"Truck 81 and Squad 3 are responding to an accident a few blocks away from you, we need you there for backup."

The paramedics listened to their instructions before Dawson nodded strongly. "Alright, yeah we'll head that way just send us the address." She replied while Shay started taking a step back. "You alright to get us there?" Gabby asked her partner, the blonde giving her a nod back while clutching the radio across her chest.

"Mhmm… And on the way there, we can talk more about this boating excursion you and Casey went on." She said suggestively, Gabby chuckling back at her while they moved towards their respective sides of the rig and climbed in, before heading out to their destination.

Despite Shay's constant teasing throughout the drive, they'd managed to make it to the scene in record time, 61 pulling up just as 81 and Squad 3 arrived. And before they even got out, every first responder there could tell this car accident was a nasty one, as there was one vehicle pinned between two others, the structure of the car crushed in more ways than one as it was obvious who had taken the brunt of the impact.

But that wasn't anything to focus on right now, instead the only thing that mattered was getting out there and helping whoever they could. Which is exactly what they were going to do.

Dawson climbed out of the ambulance the same time Casey got to his feet out of 81, Severide walking past him with his men before clasping him on the shoulder.

"You want me to take this one, Case?" He offered, Kelly well aware of how this was his friend's first big call since being back.

"Sounds good, Severide." He agreed, Kelly nodding back at him before he began spewing out orders.

"Squad, work on getting those cars stabilized. Casey, head over and check on that car in the middle… We need a gauge on how fast we have to work here." He told them, Matt nodding before he took a few steps towards the scene.

"81, with me." He shouted, Matt finding Gabby's eyes through the crowd as her and Shay were following in that similar direction.

"Hi." She spoke softly as they got to one another, the couple walking in step towards the scene.

"Hey… How are you doing?" He questioned her, gaining a soft smile from her in response before she nodded.

"I'm alright."

"Good." He replied, kissing the air quickly in her direction before they got to the vehicles.

"Help! Help me!" One of the ladies in the front car was screaming, likely from shock more than anything else as their car hadn't been damaged too badly in the accident.

"Otis!"

"On it, Lieutenant." He complied to Casey's orders, heading over towards the front car while Matt kept on towards the middle.

"Thank God you guys are here, they need help!" One bystander spoke, as he was standing beside the crushed car, currently trying to pull open the driver's side door. "There's a kid back there, and the dad's unconscious."

"Alright, alright thank you. We've got it from here, we're gonna help them, alright?" Casey assured him, the man nodding before Cruz led him away, Matt then refocusing his complete attention on the accident as between what was in front of him, and everything that man had been saying, he knew it was a brutal one.

The driver's side of the car had been completely crushed, and from what Matt knew, the driver wasn't responsive. All in all, the whole thing seemed to be a rather horrendous accident. One that Casey wasn't sure if anyone inside would've been able to survive.

But he hoped to God they had.

"Alright, Jenkins and Mouch, I need you over here. Herrmann come and try to get this door off, we need to-"

Casey stopped suddenly once he bent down to check on the driver, his eyes widening in shock as he looked in on the unresponsive man in front of him, the sight of who was sitting there causing his entire body to halt as it was almost like he couldn't function.

And everyone around him noticed.

"Matt?" Gabby asked, worry laced in her voice. Not only for her husband, but for the situation they were in, as she knew they didn't have much time. "What is it?" She questioned, reaching out to place her hand on his arm before following his line of sight into the vehicle.

But the second she did, she knew exactly what had caused his abrupt silence, a similar shock coursing through her system as she instantly recognized the bloody man in front of them.

She had only ever met him once a long time ago, but given who he was she would never forget him as she looked over the firefighter stuck inside this car.

The firefighter who used to work under Casey before he got removed from his house. The one who nearly ruined his career and his entire life, after falsely accusing Matt of something he never did. The same man who went and had an affair with the woman her husband was once married to. That's who was sitting unconscious inside this car, in desperate need of their help.

Because inside this car was Blake Jacobs.

With his and Hallie's son in the backseat.
