Hello there everyone! I'm back with the next chapter for you all.
I'm sorry there was no update last week, that surely wasn't planned on my part. I mentioned all this in an author's note in the last update, but I just didn't have a chance to get any writing done for this story because I broke my foot last week, and that kind of threw off everything.
But I'm back now and I'm so excited for this chapter. I loved writing it and I really hope you all enjoy reading it.
Thanks for reading everyone, I'll see you next time.
ONE HUNDRED AND NINETEEN
"Dawson, get your ass down here! The hubby can wait, I need your help."
Gabby was unable to hold off from rolling her eyes as she stood down at the end of the bar, her hands perched up on the counter while she leaned towards her husband, the sound of Shay's voice interrupting their previous conversation before both of them turned to the direction of the blonde. There was an unimpressed look forming over Dawson's face while Casey seemed more amused than anything else, Shay merely raising her eyebrows challengingly before tossing the bar rag over her shoulder.
"Don't give me that, you're here to work. Casey will be fine on his own for a few minutes." She continued on, her words earning some laughs from the patrons by the bar as Gabby glared her way before pushing herself back from the countertop.
"I'll be back, babe." She spoke towards Matt, the man nodding in understanding after taking a sip of his beer.
"That's fine, go help Shay… She seems like she needs some attention." He joked, Gabby biting down on her lip to hide her smile before she started to move away from him. She could feel his lingering eyes on her as she walked, Gabby opting to put a little more sway in her hips for him while she moved, until she came to a stop over by her partner.
"Finally, I was beginning to think you'd never stop gazing into Casey's eyes." Shay teased her, Dawson scoffing a bit while her arms crossed over her chest. "Which, by the way- I thought all the lovey-dovey crap was supposed to wear off once you got married." She continued on without shame, earning nothing but another glare from her friend in response. "You all have been married for over a month now, but you're still as gross as you've ever been."
"Yeah, that feeling doesn't go away when you love your husband, Shay." She countered, the blonde raising her eyebrows before her lips parted slightly.
"Ahh… Well, I'll leave that to you." She gave in while Gabby swallowed down the laugh in her throat. "But even though you two are disgusting, I am glad you settled into marriage and everything." She continued on as Dawson met her gaze once more. "You guys seem to be doing really well."
"We are." She agreed with a soft smile. "Everything's going great with us, though I guess nothing's all that different. But we're really just taking it all one day at a time, trying to enjoy all of it… I'd say we've been a pretty boring married couple so far."
"Yeah, aside from Casey having to save his ex's family." She commented, Gabby letting out a dry breath before shaking her head. "I don't think that's very boring at all."
"Fair enough… Though I'd kind of forgotten about all of that." She replied lightly, while Shay gave her a nod.
"I know we never really talked about it, but Casey seemed to handle all of it okay."
"He did." She agreed with a small smile. "The whole thing was weird, and I'm not exactly the biggest fan of Hallie after what she did. But Matt handled it better than maybe anyone should be expected to. And we haven't really thought about it since."
"Good." Shay responded quickly, Gabby raising her eyebrows a bit while Shay merely shrugged. "I just mean cause there's no reason to dwell on it, you know?"
"I know, and we haven't… At the end of the day it was just another call, we both left it at that. And since then we've been focused on other things."
"Like each other." She interjected, Dawson smirking a bit in response. "And practicing for that first little Casey baby."
Gabby rolled her eyes once more out of instinct while Shay smiled proudly. "I have no comment on that."
"Uh huh." Shay said knowingly, while Gabby bit back a smile.
"Anyway, like you were saying- yes, Matt and I are grossly in love. That didn't wear off after the wedding, and we both love being married." Dawson deadpanned.
"Yes I've noticed." She responded lightly, as Gabby laughed once more. "I think everyone has… But it is nice. Even if I give you a hard time now and then." Shay told her with a gleam in her eyes, before her gaze moved past Gabby further down the bar. "And just so you know, Casey's still staring at your ass."
Gabby glanced back in the direction she'd come from after Shay finished speaking, only to find Matt's eyes on a very specific part of her while he unapologetically appreciated the view. It wasn't until he felt her gaze that he finally looked up, the couple's eyes meeting before Casey offered her a proud grin. The second he smiled Shay released a loud laugh, Gabby running her teeth over her bottom lip as she gave her husband a suggestive wink before turning back to face her partner.
"Though I can't say I blame him." She continued on after blowing out a whistle. "You look hot tonight, Dawson."
"Uh huh." Gabby responded, with an unimpressed look covering her face. "Did you call me over here just to hit on me, or do you actually need help?"
"It might've been both." Shay replied without missing a beat, while Dawson let out a chuckle. "But now that we've talked enough about you and Mr. Dawson, get a round of beers ready. The table in the back needs them." She instructed, Gabby blowing out a breath before she nodded and got to work.
Over the next half hour or so, the paramedics worked seamlessly while they got everyone their drinks, Gabby and Shay taking care of the seemingly endless line of customers coming in and out of the bar, as the cold weather outside wasn't deterring anyone from a night out. But after the initial rush of bodies, things eventually started to thin out giving the women a break while they hung back by the bar.
As Shay was filling up a glass of water for herself, Gabby couldn't help but have her gaze linger off down towards the other end of the bar where she'd left Matt, in hopes of getting a glimpse of her husband. But when her eyes finally found his seat she noticed it was empty, his jacket and empty drink sitting right where he'd left it, with Matt nowhere in sight.
Her eyebrows furrowed a bit as she knew he wouldn't have gone too far, because not only did they come here together, but she knew he wouldn't have left without telling her. And more than that, Matt always liked to be here when she was closing. So there was no way he would've just up and left.
But clearly he'd gone somewhere, Gabby's eyes beginning to move more around the bar as she searched for Matt in the crowded room.
And soon enough she found him, Gabby seeing him navigate his way through a few different groups of people while he walked to the back of the bar, like he was coming to see her and Shay. But to her surprise he never actually came to them, Matt merely shooting her a smile and nodding towards the back before continuing his way through the room, before he disappeared into the stock room.
Heat began to slowly rise through her chest up to her neck, her bottom lip tucking into her teeth while she kept her eyes on the swinging door.
"I think that was an invitation." Shay spoke up with a knowing gleam in her eye as she'd clearly noticed Casey's gesture, Gabby ducking her head a bit before she tossed her bar rag down onto the back counter.
"Are you alright out here for a bit?" Dawson asked her, the blonde letting out a soft chuckle before she nodded.
"I think I can manage, you go see your boy." She prompted, earning a thankful look from Gabby before she started to take a few steps. "I'll make sure to keep Herrmann and the guys out here… Just try to clean up afterwards." She teased while slapping Dawson lightly with a towel as she passed her, Gabby holding back a smirk before she continued towards the stock room.
After checking her surroundings to make sure no one was paying attention, Gabby quietly slid through the door and let it fall closed behind her, her eyes moving around the room to try and locate Matt. But, yet again, he wasn't anywhere to be found, her forehead creasing in confusion as she continued to take a few steps into the somewhat quiet room.
But she didn't get very far inside before the backdoor was pulled open, Gabby glancing in that direction to see Matt step back into the bar, a bit of snow dusting his hair and his shoulders while he pulled the door closed behind him and secured the lock.
"Hey there." Gabby replied, the amused tone in her voice not going unnoticed as she continued towards him.
"Hi."
"What were you doing?" She asked while she came to a stop in front of him, the soft smile on his face widening.
"I took out some of the trash bags piled up back here, so you didn't have to." He explained easily, a knowing look flashing in her eyes before she nodded.
"That's very sweet, thank you." She responded, Casey nodding back at her while she began to wipe some of the excess snow off his coat. While it was only early November, the weather in Chicago didn't seem to care as they'd already had some pretty brutal days, their first snowfall earlier this week only bringing in more snow and ice and freezing cold temperatures across the city.
"Though I guess when I saw you nod back here, I didn't exactly think that helping me clean up was what you had in mind." She added on after getting the last of the snow off him, before looking up at him through her lashes.
The feeling in the air shifted almost immediately, Matt's stomach tightening as he forced himself to swallow the lump growing in his throat.
"Well, that's because that wasn't why I wanted you back here." He replied, his voice low while his striking blue eyes pierced through her, the two refusing to look away from the other for a moment or two before a slight smirk began to tug on her lips.
"Oh really?"
"Mhmm." He hummed, his hands coming out to rest over her hips before pulling her closer to him until her waist was against his, Gabby gasping slightly at the movement while he tightened his hold on her, before he put his lips against hers.
She'd expected the kiss, but somehow it still took her breath away as he kissed her with a passion and fury she wasn't anticipating, Gabby easily letting her husband take the lead as he continued to lean forward, his hands keeping her upright while they moved together. Though their kiss ended a lot sooner than Casey wanted as it was only seconds that passed before Gabby was pulling back
"You're cold." She murmured, her nose scrunching up as she felt a few droplets of melting snow hit her, Matt letting out a deep chuckle while he dug his fingers into her hips just a little bit more.
"I'm sorry." He replied, Gabby matching his grin before she moved back to kiss him anyway, his next laugh getting caught in his throat as they started back once more.
Despite the intensity and Matt's roaming hands that were sliding down her body, their movements were all innocent enough as the couple was very much aware of where they were and how there was a crowd full of people just on the other side of that door.
Though it didn't seem to deter Casey much.
A sudden gasp left Gabby's lips when she felt him grab ahold of her, Matt swallowing the noise while he gradually picked up his pace, his one hand staying firmly on her ass while his other slid around to her front and began to roam across her side and chest. Enough to drive her completely crazy, Gabby slowly losing her grip on everything around her as all she could focus on was his hands and mouth on her.
But just before she was about to get fully lost in him, a loud cheer from out in the bar pulled her back down to reality, Gabby letting out another sharp gasp as Matt's lips started to trail across her jaw and down to her neck.
"Matt… Baby- We shouldn't do this here." She said, her eyes moving towards the door just before they rolled back into her head when he teased her through the material of her shirt.
"I know." He whispered against her neck as his hand slid back down to her side, the man knowing that even though they were hidden enough by the rows of shelves in the room, it was still risky to go much further here. "...Do you want me to stop?"
Her eyes slowly opened once more as Matt pulled back enough to get a look at her, his movements over her body coming to a complete halt as he waited for a response. If she wanted him to stop, she knew he would immediately. But no matter how much they should stop, there was something in the back of her mind telling her she didn't want that.
Because what she did want was him.
She wanted him, and she wanted him right now, the exhilaration mixed with desire she was feeling enough to overpower any thoughts of going back out into that bar before she slowly shook her head.
"No." She replied softly as that small grin returned to her face, Matt matching her look before he leaned down to kiss her again.
His movements were rough, yet full of love as he guided her back closer to the wall, fully shielding them from view before his hands moved to the front of her pants, Matt skillfully getting them open while his lips ran over any part of her he could find.
"God, you're so beautiful." He murmured, igniting a fire deep within her stomach just as she felt his hand disappear beneath the open fabric of her jeans, a low moan then leaving her throat while her hands gripped him as tightly as she could.
"Matt-" She gasped after her head fell back against the wall, Matt's mouth marking her neck while his hand continued to tease between her legs. "We have to be quick." She managed to choke out, feeling him smirk against her before letting his lips guide themselves up to her ear.
"I can work with that." He promised before sliding a single finger into her, Gabby nearly melting at the contact as she coughed on the air in her lungs, her mind focused solely on her husband while he continued on with his movements.
From that moment on nothing else mattered to them, the thick desire around them blocking out the crowded bar just on the other side of the wall while they made the most out of the short time they had together.
Casey and Dawson walked hand in hand up the driveway towards the firehouse, his grip on her palm tightening every few seconds while they navigated the patches of snow and ice, in an effort to help his wife keep her balance as they made their way into work. Once they were on the solid ground of the apparatus floor, they kicked the excess snow off their boots before walking further inside, the couple never straying too far from the other as they maneuvered their way around some of their coworkers.
"Hey Caseys." Severide greeted from his spot at the squad table, Matt giving him a nod while Gabby let out a soft laugh, their steps slowing before they came to a complete stop by their friend and his firefighters.
"Hey Sev." Casey replied first, using his free hand to secure the beanie covering his head while he looked around. "I'm surprised you guys are out here this early, it's barely above freezing."
"Eh, it's not too bad… And besides, Otis is in there cooking and last I checked it smelled like he was burning the place down." He explained, seeing knowing looks cover both their faces before he continued. "So I'm taking my chances out here."
"Can't blame you for that." Matt mused.
"What's he trying to make?" Gabby pressed on, Kelly wincing a bit while he glanced back towards the double doors.
"Some breakfast casserole thing, I'm not sure." He answered, while Capp shook his head in disgust. "But I'm pretty sure he already ruined it."
"Why do we let him in the kitchen again?" Tony piped up from further down the table.
"Because your sorry ass is no better." Severide joked, earning a few laughs from the first responders while Gabby let out a soft scoff.
"I guess I'll go see if he needs some help." She told them, Matt nodding while the men of Squad 3 shot her a few thankful looks. "You mind putting this in my locker?" She added on, holding out her shift bag to her husband before he grabbed onto it.
"Nope, I've got it." He assured her, Gabby smiling softly at him while pushing herself up to give him a quick kiss on the cheek before heading off towards the firehouse, letting her hand run along his back as she moved.
While the boys were outside Dawson stepped in through the doors to see a few more of her friends sitting throughout the common room, with Otis positioned back behind the counter. Clearly trying to salvage whatever he could of breakfast.
"Dawson, thank God." Cruz breathed out from his spot at the round table. "Please save us."
Mouch and Herrmann both chuckled from the couch, Gabby shaking her head a bit as she stepped into the room and made her way towards Otis.
"I'm sure it's not that bad." She tried, even though she was well aware of the disasters that could occur whenever Otis was in the kitchen.
"It's pretty bad." Otis spoke up, Gabby walking around the counter and coming to a stop beside him before glancing down at the burnt casserole dish in front of him, a hard wince appearing over her features before she looked back towards him.
"...Maybe we should do something else for breakfast." She suggested, the firefighter blowing out a breath before he nodded.
"As long as you're the one who cooks it." Cruz chimed in, before a few of the other firefighters in the room voiced their agreement with him.
"Alright, alright I can take a hint." Otis replied, waving his hand towards Cruz while he took a step away from the counter. "You sure you don't mind, Dawson?"
"It's fine, Otis… Just give me a few minutes and I'll have something for everyone."
"Bless you, mama." Cruz cut in once more with a lighthearted wink, Gabby offering him a smile back before she began to get to work.
Having been in charge of meal time on more occasions than she could count, Gabby knew the secret to successfully feeding everyone in this house was cooking something that could feed a small army, as most of the men here often ate more than you'd expect. So in an effort to keep things as simple as possible, while also getting everyone fed, she decided on whipping up some pancakes, eggs, and sausage, knowing all of that would go over well with the group.
So Dawson got to work, the paramedic beginning to prepare breakfast for everyone while firefighters filtered in and out of the common room. But she was only left on her own for a few minutes before Shay came in through the conference room door, with a wide smile on her face.
"There you are Dawson, I've been looking everywhere for you." Shay spoke as soon as she saw her, the blonde's hands shoved into her pockets while she made her way into the kitchen. "And hello, everyone else." She greeted the rest of the room, earning a laugh from Herrmann and Cruz while a few of the other men shook their heads.
"So heartfelt." Herrmann commented.
"Yeah, good morning to you too, Shay." Mouch added on, the paramedic nodding before stopping beside her partner.
"...Hello." Shay repeated, Gabby raising her eyebrows pointedly while she continued to work on breakfast.
"Hi Shay." Dawson replied back, seeing an almost expectant look waiting for her. "...Can I help you with something?" She pushed on, Shay leaning her weight against the side of the counter while shrugging a bit.
"No, I'm good… Just seeing how exhausted you are after you and the Lieutenant got all handsy last night." Shay said, her voice dropping considerably by the time she got to the end of her sentence in an effort to keep their conversation between them.
But that didn't stop the heat that started to creep up Dawson's neck, the PIC clearing her throat while she shifted her weight between her feet.
"Damn, it must've been real good if just me mentioning it has you reacting like that." Shay continued to tease, Dawson biting down on her bottom lip before nudging her friend with her hip. "Although we both know Casey used more than just his hands."
"Shay." She spoke with an almost warning tone in her voice.
"Oh we're fine, no one's listening to us." The blonde waved her off while Gabby did her best to refocus on preparing the pancake batter. "And it's not like I'm wrong."
"I never said you were." Gabby shot back without hesitation, missing the proud smirk that slowly started to form across Shay's face. "But we don't need to talk about this here."
"Uh huh… Just like you didn't need to fuck loverboy in a bar full of people. But you did it anyway." Shay countered while laughing, Gabby's body getting warm once more while she fought to stay focused on the task at hand. "I swear, you and Casey have been little freaks ever since that honeymoon." She added on, Dawson pursing her lips together to try and stop her own smile as she knew there was some truth to Shay's words. "So tell me, was it better knowing you two could get caught at any moment?"
Dawson's lips parted slightly, the woman unsure of how to answer her question. Especially here.
But before she had to figure out what to say the bells rang out above their heads.
"Truck 81, Squad 3, Battalion 25, Ambulance 61. Multiple persons in distress at 737 South Halsted Street."
Main continued to rattle out a few more companies from other houses, the feeling in the air shifting as some of the firefighters began to get up from their seats, while Dawson turned off the stove and started to head around the counter.
"Oh, would you look at that?" Gabby spoke towards her friend, Shay narrowing her eyes while following after her.
"You're not getting off that easy, Dawson." She replied, matching her step for step. "Not like you did last night."
Gabby choked on her breath at the less than subtle innuendo, her coughing gaining the attention of a few of the other first responders as they looked back towards the paramedics.
"Everything okay?" Cruz asked first, Gabby immediately nodding despite the heat in her chest.
"Yeah, yeah.. I was just saying how it looks like our meal will have to wait." She covered, Shay hiding her laugh while Joe eyed them, before he ultimately accepted her answer and continued on towards the garage.
"Smooth, Dawson." Shay spoke, Gabby shooting a glare her way as she reached out to shove her lightly, before the paramedics followed everyone else out to the rigs.
"You're really not gonna give me anything here?" Shay asked as she hopped down from the driver's seat, Gabby scoffing while she grabbed their medic bag from the back.
"Shay…"
"Come on, I covered for you with Herrmann. The least you could do is give me the dirty details." She teased, Dawson giving her one last look as Shay grabbed the spineboard before she shook her head.
"Over my dead body, am I gonna tell you any more about me and Matt last night." She told her, effectively ending their less than professional conversation right before they got over to their Chief, where he was already instructing the other companies at their house.
"Truck, I want you to start your sweep on the top floor… But be vigilant, we don't know what we're dealing with." He told them, Gabby getting the feeling that there was more going on than she and Shay knew about. "Squad, start down on the first floor and work your way up. And everyone mask up."
"Got it, Chief." Casey spoke, Severide sharing a similar sentiment before the firefighters began rushing into the building, followed by a few other trucks.
"Chief, what's going on?" Dawson asked first, slinging their bag over her shoulder while she looked around. The scene was surprisingly quiet, with only a few other ambulance's here waiting to help where needed.
The only problem was, Gabby couldn't seem to locate any victims.
"...We're not really sure." Boden finally answered her. "No one seems to know what happened, or what's going on… Just that there's victims inside." He spoke slowly, like he was unsure of what he was saying, Gabby picking up on a nervousness from him that she wasn't entirely used to.
"Alright… Where do you want us?" She asked, Boden then starting to respond. But Severide's voice came through the radio before he could.
"Chief, we've got a victim here. On the first floor, south entrance." He started, while Boden was tightening his hold on the radio. "They're unresponsive, but there's no smoke or flames anywhere we can tell."
"Alright." He replied, the older man clearing his throat before he turned to his medics with a questioning look in his eye, almost like he was wanting to know if they were alright going inside.
"We can go check it out, Chief." Dawson assured him, Boden drawing in a breath before he nodded.
"Okay… Squad, 61 is coming in. Once they've gotten to the victim, go ahead and continue your search."
"Got it, Chief." Severide answered, Gabby and Shay both giving Boden one last nod before they hurried off towards the eerily quiet building.
"81?" Boden called through the radio. "How's it looking?"
"Nothing yet, Chief… No one was in the stairwells, we just got to the top floor." Casey answered him. "But there's no smoke anywhere… Not sure why the alarms were pulled."
"Alright… Keep me posted, and be careful Casey."
"On it, Chief."
Inside the building, Dawson and Shay walked in through the southside entrance, the paramedics keeping an eye out while they searched for the victim Squad needed help with in the all but deserted building.
"This is so creepy." Shay spoke up while she held the backboard, Gabby breathing in deeply as they made their way around the corner.
"A little bit, yeah… But there they are."
"Dawson! Over here." Severide called, Gabby and Shay both nodding as they jogged over to the scene, the paramedics immediately seeing a woman lying still on the ground while Cruz was checking her pulse.
"I can't find anything." Joe spoke, Gabby dropping down the floor beside him while Shay mimicked the movement on the other side of the woman. "We don't know what happened to her." He added on, Dawson doing a quick once over only to see no visible signs of injury.
"Let me see." Shay stepped in, Cruz getting back while Severide stood behind Gabby.
"Dawson, are you good here?" He asked, the PIC glancing back up at him before she nodded.
"We are, we're fine.. You guys go."
"Alright." He said, patting her shoulder before he guided his men over towards the stairwell. "Chief, we're heading up to the second floor." Kelly spoke through the radio.
"Okay Severide."
"Shay, do you have anything?" Dawson asked as Squad disappeared around the corner, while the blonde grimaced.
"I can't find a pulse, no… I'm gonna bag her." She responded, Gabby nodding before she started to thoroughly assess this woman for any signs of trauma. But it was nearly impossible.
"I can't see anything, she's wearing so many layers." Dawson spoke under her breath while her eyes moved over her, before something strange caught her eye.
She wasn't sure what it was, but part of this woman's dark scarf looked frayed, almost like it had been torn through. And something about it felt odd, Gabby moving it slightly out of the way while she searched around for the jacket zipper underneath, before she started to pull it down.
But she was only able to move it down past her chest before she froze, a soft gasp leaving Gabby's lips while her eyes widened in shock.
"Dawson?" Shay asked as she was getting the bag ready, confusion filling her features when she saw the hesitation and uncertainty covering Gabby's face. "Gabby, what is it-"
"She was shot."
Shay thought she misheard her, the words not making sense in her brain as she looked down towards the woman.
"What?" Shay pushed, her breath catching in her throat as soon as she saw what Dawson was looking at. And that was the deep red blood pooling over this woman's chest, surrounding a very small hole right over her breastbone. The bullet must not have gone through completely, her thick, dark layers hiding her injuries from view. But there was no denying it now.
This woman had been shot. And recently.
"Oh my God." Shay breathed out, shaking her head in near disbelief as she rested back on her heels. "I… Did this happen here? Was she-" She stopped herself, both paramedics trying to wrap their minds around what they were seeing before Gabby brought her unsteady hand up to her radio, clicking onto the channel where she could get straight through to Boden.
"Chief?" She asked, before repeating her word once she hadn't gotten a response. "Chief?"
"What is it, Dawson?"
"Our victim on the first floor, she was shot." She blurted out, hearing a dead silence come through the radio for a couple long seconds.
"...What?"
"This woman was shot… I think there's a shooter in the building-"
Dawson hardly got the words out before a blaze of gunfire filled the room, the two paramedics ducking on instinct as glass and debris flew around them. They didn't know where the shooter was, or if they could see them, but odds are they were close by while glass from the lights above them continued to rain down.
"Dawson!" Shay yelled, before more bullets flew. "Dawson, come on we gotta get out of here!" She spoke in a panic, the older woman all but grabbing her friend and pulling her up before they bolted down the hallway.
Their movement seemed to make the gunfire come faster, Shay certain the unknown shooter had seen them and was making them their next target. But her adrenaline wasn't letting her focus on that, Shay keeping a death grip on Gabby while she searched for a place to hide.
"In here!" She spoke quickly, Shay hearing one last intense spray of bullets through the air before she yanked Gabby into a closet, the blonde practically throwing her to the ground to get her inside before she slammed the door shut. "Okay, okay, it's okay." She spoke to herself, Shay looking around for anything to barricade the door while she vaguely heard the sound of Dawson catching her breath behind her. "Alright we're okay, we're safe." She continued on while she latched a broom across the door, knowing it was better than nothing as the reality of this slowly began to hit her.
And it felt like a weight crushing against her chest.
"We're gonna be okay." She repeated slowly while staring at the door, Shay forcing herself to take a few steadying breaths as she began to crouch down to the floor.
"Dawson! Shay!" Boden all but screamed through the radio, the sound of his voice snapping her thoughts into focus as she vaguely remembered hearing him call for them while they were running from the gunman. But in all the chaos, they hadn't had the chance to respond. "61, report!"
"Dawson, you got that?" Shay asked after releasing another breath, the blonde bringing her hand up to push her hair back while she felt her blood pounding in her skull.
"Ambulance 61, report!" Boden repeated, Shay sighing once more as she heard Gabby continuing to take deep breaths behind her, before the older paramedic turned around.
"Dawson, can you-"
The words caught in her throat when she saw Gabby sitting on the ground, her partner sucking in air as her hand was clasped over her shoulder, where blood was slowly spreading out from underneath her palm.
"Shay…" Gabby spoke, her voice almost breathless as Shay's eyes were glued to the wound Dawson was doing her best to cover, before her hand slowly fell down to her lap and exposed the bullet shaped hole through her jacket. The same hole that brought their worst fears to light.
That Gabby had been hit.
"Shay." She repeated, the blonde snapping out of her haze before she scrambled across the floor towards her friend, Shay knowing she had to put everything she was feeling aside and be a paramedic first.
"Okay, okay, it's okay." She assured her while putting pressure over the wound in Gabby's shoulder, causing her partner to cry out in pain. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry but I've got to. Everything's gonna be alright." She promised, Gabby nodding slowly before her head fell back into the wall, the PIC doing all she could to ignore the searing pain going through her arm into her chest. "You're gonna be fine."
"61!" Boden yelled once more. "Squad, do you know where 61 is?"
"They were still downstairs." Severide replied. "But I don't know where the shooter is."
"81?"
"I don't know, Chief." Casey responded, Shay trying her best to keep her attention on the radio and on Gabby, where she could see her friend slowly fading. "We're barricaded in a classroom, we have a few civilians with us.. But we never saw Dawson and Shay."
"Gabby, hey- open your eyes." Shay prompted, Gabby's head snapping forward while the older paramedic continued applying pressure to her bleeding wound. "We're gonna get out of here, but I need you to stay with me, alright?"
"..Okay." Dawson breathed out, her voice barely audible while Shay adjusted to covering Gabby's shoulder with one of her hands, while her other bloody glove-covered hand reached up to her radio.
"Chief?" Shay said quietly after hitting the button, the woman clearing her throat while fighting off the tears sitting in her eyes. "Chief, can you hear me?"
"Shay!" Severide came through first.
"Are you guys okay?" Boden asked next, Shay swallowing thickly as her eyes refocused on Dawson and the immense pain she was in. "...Shay?"
"We need help." She pleaded, her voice breaking as there was nothing but a debilitating silence through the radio until the next words left her lips.
"...Dawson's been shot."
