"Some things never change, not even in 30 years."
He looked at her and she saw the gleam in his eye. She heard the underlying meaning in his voice to those words.
"Would you like to...maybe sit a while till Gilbert and Anne return?"
"Me and my boy have to get a shipment to Charlotte town tonight. When you see him tell him I was asking for him. Good day Marilla." He tipped his hat and rode off. She waved good bye and breathed a sigh of relief. After all this time she still regretted not forgiving him. It would be one of her biggest regrets in life. What would her life had been like if she had forgiven him sooner. Her thought was interrupted by the sound of Anne's foot steps and Gilbert yelling at her as she made her way into the house.
"But Anne what about your twenty dollars?" The door slammed as Anne rushed into green gables.
"Miss Cuthbert" he nodded his head toward her in a hello gesture.
"Gilbert." She returned the gesture." Your father was looking for you."
"I'm expected to be with him to take the cows to Charlotte town with him. I best be on my way ma'am."
"Go along Gilbert. I will tend to Anne."
"Good day Miss Cuthbert."
"Good day."
She walked into the house, making her way of the steps. She could hear crying long before she made it to Anne's room and knew she was upset. She opened the door revealing Anne lying on her bed wiping her eyes.
"There there child. "
"Why does my temper always get the better of me Marilla. I was so stupid."
"There now Anne. You are far from stupid. Wreckless maybe but not stupid. "Marilla laughed. "Remember when you dyed your hair green? Or when you broke a slate over Gilbert's head?" She laughed more. "I swear I thought you were possessed."
"It's just not right Marilla. I ask for his opinion and when he gave it my temper flared. He ask me to forgive him for what he said but I am just so stubborn Marilla."
"I can only imagine."
"I hit him so hard Marilla."
"That's good enough for him. The Blythes have always been far to pious for there own good."
"Why does he always take everything and turn it into some schoolboy prank." She sniffled and leaned into Marillas embrace.
"Because he loves you."
"I was so stubborn. Why must I always take criticism to heart. I ask him for his opinion. I can't talk to him right now. "
"You need to talk to him before it's too late. I remember something similar happened with Gilbert's father and I. "
"You and Gilbert's father were together?"
"Well some people called him my beau."
"What happened?"
"well we quarreled much like you and Gilbert. He ask me to forgive him, I wouldn't. By the time I got ready to forgive him it was too late. He had moved on."
"Oh Marilla. That's so tragical."
"No more of that. Apologize to Gilbert before it's too late. But maybe let him stew for a just a little while, not too long though. "
"Maybe I could talk to Diana first before I apologize."
"Yes. It's been a while since you have seen Diana. I expect she will be pleased to see you. Try and be back before dark. Wouldn't want you injuring yourself trying to run from spirits." Anne laughed
"I had forgotten about that." She wiped her tears." I will try to not let my imagination run away with me."
"Please do."
